Résumé Plusieurs auteurs soutiennent que c’est au xviie siècle que les Hollandais introduisirent les techniques et les engins d’assèchement dans les marais du sud-ouest français et que ces techniques furent transmises par la suite aux Acadiens installés au Nouveau Monde. Or il ne faut surtout pas oublier que, depuis quelques siècles déjà, des techniques françaises d’assèchement proprement dites étaient utilisées dans le sud-ouest. En outre, les guerres de religion et les révolutions paysannes surent freiner l’implantation hollandaise dans cette grande région jusqu’à la fin du xviie siècle. On peut donc affirmer que, au début de ce siècle, les techniques d’assèchement introduites en Acadie, tirées entre autres du Poitou, devaient être bel et bien françaises. Elles furent adaptées aux marais limitrophes à la baie Française (baie de Fundy). Plus d’un siècle plus tard, à l’époque du Grand Dérangement (1755–1763), les techniques acadiennes furent transmises à la fois chez les Planters des Maritimes et dans les colonies américaines. Enfin, il faut noter la transformation de ces techniques à travers le temps et la survivance d’une expertise véritablement acadienne, qui sera recherchée à maintes reprises, souvent en période de crise aux xixe et xxe siècles, ici même dans les provinces maritimes.

Plus d'un siècle après l'établissement des Normands en Italie du Sud, une autre dynastie franque, originaire du Poitou, s'établit en pays grec et étend sa domination sur une population majoritairement hellénophone, de culture et de foi grecques à Chypre : les Lusignans en 11922. La monarchie franque s'y maintient jusqu'en 1473, année où s'amorce la transition politique et administrative de l'île vers le règne vénitien (1489-1570/1571). Le détournement de la quatrième croisade sur Constantinople (1203-1204) marque une étape supplémentaire dans l'expansion latine en Orient : la prise de la capitale de l'empire byzantin (12-15 avril 1204) convainc les croisés de leur irrésistible force. Les Latins se dispersent alors sur les routes de la Grèce continentale et insulaire, que leurs chefs ont prévue de se répartir avant même la prise de Constantinople (Van Tricht 2011 : 41-46). Le Péloponnèse est conquis en 1205 par des chevaliers franc-comtois et champenois : la principauté franque de Morée survit diffcilement jusqu'en 1430, date à laquelle elle est cédée au despotat d'Épire. Les grands vainqueurs de la conquête latine sont finalement les Vénitiens qui établissent un empire colonial dont I 'île de Crète constitue la plus importante terre de peuplement (1205-1645/1669). La domination latine se replie aux 19 et 16 siècles sous l'effet des conquêtes ottomanes, mais une poche de résistance latine se maintient encore à Corfou au 1 V siècle.

Il a été clairement établi que le trouble de la personnalité borderline (BDP) est fréquemment associé aux troubles liés à la consommation de substances (SUD). En effet, depuis longtemps, plusieurs études se sont penchées sur l’association fréquente rencontrée entre le SUD et le BDP. Les données de la littérature admettent en moyenne une prévalence de 50 % de diagnostic de trouble des substances chez les patients présentant un trouble BDP. De plus, la grande majorité des individus borderlines présentant une comorbidité SUD la développe au cours de leur adolescence. En allant plus loin nous sommes tentés de penser que les éléments à l’origine de la mise en place d’un SUD chez les borderline sont présents dès l’adolescence. Ceci pose donc la question de la fonction de la consommation de substance dans l’économie psychique du borderline ainsi que leurs liens avec le processus d’adolescence. Ainsi, la consommation de substance est particulièrement importante chez les adolescents borderline et constitue l’une des principales comorbidités. La rencontre avec une substance psychoactive (alcool, cannabis ou autre) en plein processus d’adolescence semble jouer deux fonctions : d’une part, elle devient un moyen de palier au manque de capacités de régulations émotionnelles particulièrement sollicitées à cette période de la vie et tente ainsi de canaliser un débordement psychique. D’autre part, elle ravive par l’intensité de son vécu les expériences précoces de saturations émotionnelles à l’origine des dysfonctionnements du système de régulation des émotions. À la fois remède et poison la consommation risque de fixer d’avantage la construction du trouble borderline dans un cercle de renforcement auto-entretenu. L’adolescence étant par ailleurs une occasion de moduler, de remodeler certains aspects du rapport au monde, elle est une période particulièrement pertinente pour la mise en place d’une action thérapeutique.

Phytophthora ramorum is an invasive pathogen in some mixed-hardwood forests in California and southwestern Oregon, where it causes sudden oak death (SOD) on some members of Fagaceae, ramorum shoot dieback on some members of Ericaceae and conifers, and ramorum leaf blight on diverse hosts. We compared symptoms of P. ramorum infection resulting from four different artificial inoculation techniques with the symptoms of natural infection on 49 western forest trees and shrubs; 80% proved susceptible to one degree or another. No single inoculation method predicted the full range of symptoms observed in the field, but whole plant dip came closest. Detached-leaf-dip inoculation provided a rapid assay and permitted a reasonable assessment of susceptibility to leaf blight. Both leaf age and inoculum dose affected detached-leaf assays. SOD and dieback hosts often developed limited leaf symptoms, although the pattern of midrib and petiole necrosis was distinctive. Stem-wound inoculation of seedlings correlated with field symptoms for several hosts. The results suggested that additional conifer species may be damaged in the field. Log inoculation provided a realistic test of susceptibility to SOD, but was cumbersome and subject to seasonal variability. Pacific rhododendron, salmonberry, cascara, and poison oak were confirmed as hosts by completing Koch's postulates. Douglas-fir was most susceptible to shoot dieback shortly after budburst, with infection occurring at the bud.

Abstract One of the authors (Skroch) has been asking himself since the early years of a long-term study initiated in 1966 (77) “What is a weed to a tree?” Apple trees in the mowed grass check plots grew less than in plots with woody vines. In another test comparing mowed sod, contact herbicide, and residual plus contact herbicide, trees having an herbicide program yielded 400 bushels/acre more fruit in the 5th year than those without. Apples in another orchard were of higher grade in plots with over 50% trailing blackberry (Rubus sp.) and poison ivy (Rhus radicans L.) ground covers than those from an area with a mowed-lawn appearance. The practice of frequent mowing, which increased grass covers in the 1960s, may have been a factor in the small fruit problem of the 1970s.

The tiger quoll is a large marsupial carnivore that occurs in forested habitat in south-eastern Australia. Three tiger quoll populations were trapped for up to six years and data on population parameters, including size, structure, sex ratio, adult : subadult ratio, weight, breeding characteristics, age and longevity were recorded for each population. Sex ratios (♂ : ♀) varied from 5 : 1 to 0 : 1. Population size and age structure reflected previous mortality events and social organisation traits, with all populations showing signs of instability due to disturbance events. Males did not reach full adult weight until three years of age and females until two years. Mean adult male weight was 2.81 kg ± 0.50 (s.d.) (range 2.0–4.2 kg) and mean adult female weight was 1.73 kg ± 0.22 (s.d.) (range 1.2–2.1 kg). Most females did not breed before two years of age and were recorded breeding up to four years of age. A proportion of females did not appear to breed in consecutive years. Matings were estimated to have occurred between late June and early August and births between mid-July and late August. Pouch litter size varied from 4 to 6 with a mean of 5.38 ± 0.65 (s.d.). The adult to juvenile ratio suggests that the mean number of young weaned per female is probably as low as one or two. Monitoring of four females found that the average number of young weaned was three with a range of 2–4. The maximum age recorded was five years. Population declines were found to correlate with 1080 poison baiting programmes, but not with selective logging.

Aims and MethodPatients who self-poison are at increased risk of future self-poisoning and early death. Admission patterns and effective treatment strategies are unclear although psychosocial assessment may reduce readmissions. This study aimed to determine admission patterns and the proportion of patients receiving a psychiatric assessment in 4220 consecutive admissions.ResultsThe average age was 34 years (s.d.=13, range 13–94); most were female (56 v. 44%, P<50.001). Twelve per cent of patients were aged 13–18 years, again the majority were female (70 v. 30%, P<50.001). Twenty per cent of patients had multiple admissions, accounting for 42% of the total admissions. There were slightly more admissions per day at the weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday; P<0.002). As many as 245 patients were either not referred or ‘self-discharged’ before they were assessed by the liaison psychiatry service.Clinical ImplicationsThese findings may help target medical resources, suggesting that consistent numbers of staff are required during all days of the week.

Au XVIIIe siècle, la production des eaux-de-vie est la principale activité économique d’un territoire limité dont le marché de référence devient Cognac. De nombreux métiers sont impliqués dans l’élaboration de ces produits avant et après le passage à l’alambic. Rapidement, des taxes sont appliquées sur ces boissons. L’État trouve ainsi de nouvelles ressources d’autant que toute la société est concernée, malgré l’existence de privilèges. Afin de faciliter les échanges, la règlementation cherche à harmoniser les mesures et les contenants. Des contrôles tentent de démasquer les fraudes. Au cours du XIXe siècle, la présence de l’État à l’échelon local et national se confirme selon trois tendances principales. Tout d’abord, par la protection des entrepreneurs et de la propriété privée qui débouche sur la prise en compte de questions environnementales et de santé publique. Ensuite, dans un contexte de grande créativité, d’innovation et de transformation du matériel distillatoire, par la préservation des droits des inventeurs grâce au dépôt de demande brevet qui donne la possibilité de dénoncer la contrefaçon. In the 18th century, the production of brandy was the main economic activity in a limited area whose reference market became Cognac. During the 19th century, the presence of the state at local and national level was confirmed in three main ways. Firstly, through the protection of entrepreneurs and private property, which led to the consideration of environmental and public health issues. Secondly, in the context of great creativity, innovation and transformation of distilling material, by the preservation of the rights of inventors through the filing of patent applications which gives the possibility to denounce counterfeiting. Ultimately, the authorities are developing procedures to protect trademarks. Prefectural decrees supplement the legal arsenal that is being deployed. La fabrication de sarcophages constitue, entre la fin du 5e s. et jusqu’au 9e s., une activité artisanale et économique importante, témoin de réseaux économiques et d’aires culturelles locaux et régionaux. L’inventaire et l’étude des sarcophages en contexte funéraire a permis d’établir une typologie détaillée fondée sur des critères morphologiques, décoratifs et technologiques. Sur les quelques 2500 sarcophages étudiés, un faible nombre est bien daté. Une typo-chronologie relative a pu être établie, qui s’appuie sur des exemplaires bien calés chronologiquement et sur l’évolution supposée des formes et modèles ornementaux. De l’étude des lieux de production, dont quatre centres carriers ont été repérés et étudiés, il ressort un savoir-faire important et une organisation très raisonnée de la production. La confrontation des données issues de l’étude des sarcophages et des carrières a permis de restituer des aires de diffusion d’importance micro-locale (Civaux ou Chauvigny par exemple), locale (Panzoult, la vallée de la Manse ou les productions en grès roussards), régionale (la vallée de l’Anglin), voire supra-régionale (productions bourbonnaises et nivernaises, dont les carrières sont situées en dehors de la zone d’étude)
The sarcophagi production is, between the end of the fifth century to the ninth century, an artisanal and economic activity of major importance, witness of economic networks and local and regional cultural area. The inventory and study of sarcophagi in funerary context allowed us to establish a detailed typology founded on morphological, decorative and technological criteria. On some 2500 sarcophagi studied, only a few are well dated. A relative typo-chronology has been established, based on best datations and on the evolution of shapes and decorative models. From the study of production sites, including four quarrying center were studied, we can observe an important expertise and a very rational organization of production. The confrontation of study data from sarcophagi and quarries has allowed us to restitute several diffusion areas: micro-local (Civaux or Chauvigny), local (Panzoult, valley of the Manse or red sandstone of Loir valley) or regional (Bourbonnais or Nivernais productions, outside our study area)

Bee crisis is threatening worldwide food security. Pesticides are extensively used in the agricultural zone. Unfortunately, these pesticides cause severe toxicity toward pollinators than the target pests such as honeybees. This review summarizes the different studies related to pesticide hazards of bees. This paper reported risks of pesticides neurological and physiological poisoning toward honeybees. Pesticides act as poison and ruin vital functions involved in leaning and cognition, behavior and, the body physiological mechanisms. Many laboratory and field research data evaluated the lethal and sub-lethal poisoning on bee foraging dance, learning, and memory abilities of honeybees. Insecticide residues are detected in bee bodies and LD50 and LC50 values evaluated. It is also studied that in honeybees systemic insecticide residues and, its metabolite adulterated in their body during foraging activities. Similarly, pesticide-contaminated food stored in a hive consumed continuously by honeybees may cause sub-lethal toxicity effects. Which causes anomalous bee social behavior and ultimately leads to colony collapse disorder. If population of pollinator decline it will disturb the food chain and leads to food crisis. This review emphasized causes of bee decline with the emergence of pesticides in agricultural domains.

This chapter delves into the environmental assault on Akwesasne as well as the tribe’s resistance. In the 1950s, Canada and the United States started building the St. Lawrence Seaway, a system of canals, locks, and channels that enabled ships to launch in the Great Lakes and sail clear to the Atlantic Ocean. One of its many regional side projects entailed a massive hydroelectric dam that straddled the international borderline. Its construction drowned out six villages and virtually all of the area’s beaver hutches, displacing some 6,500 people—many of whom were Mohawk—and decimating the trapping industry. The dam also lured businesses into the area, including General Motors, Reynolds Metals, and the Aluminum Company of America, all three of which opened factories on the outskirts of Akwesasne and slowly began to poison the area’s air and rivers. The Environmental Protection Agency has done little to help, and many Mohawks resent them for it. The author interviews activists who have taken matters into their own hands with direct action against the corporations—and have been sued as a result.

Unveiled in 1957, the Mackles Brothers’ $10 down, $10 a month sales campaign brought millions in revenue, and led to the creation of the publically-traded General Development Corporation (GDC) and other so-called “Land Giants,” huge corporations based in Miami that began converting huge stretches of Florida scrub brush and swampland in planned communities like Port Charlotte. In 1962, the Mackles left GDC to found the Deltona Corporation, which developed a 17,000-acre stretch of cattle land between Deland and Daytona Beach north of Orlando into the city of Deltona, and began projects at Marco Island and Spring Hill. GDC had Port Charlotte and eight other communities going; Del Webb had Sun City Center near Tampa; Jack and Leonard Rosen had Gulf American developments at Cape Coral and Golden Gate; while “d-CON” rat poison magnate Lee Ratner developed Lehigh Acres east of Fort Myers. In time, other Land Giants included the Arvida Corporation, the AMREP Corporation, Cavanagh Communities, and ITT, who by the mid-1960s had staked out over one million uninhabited lots, which they peddled through an army of trained and manipulative salesmen who enticed buyers with easy-to-pay installment contracts.

The one multiple murderer whose name will for ever be linked to thallium is that of Graham Young. As we saw in the previous chapter, victims of thallium poisoning were generally thought to be suffering from some other condition and treated accordingly, so there was little in the way of evidence that we can use to follow the effect this metal had on them. In Young’s case there were several victims whose illnesses were carefully recorded and we can reconstruct the way that Young administered the poison, although it is difficult to deduce why he chose one person to die and not another. Young used two metal poisons: antimony and thallium, the former to punish, the latter to kill. With thallium acetate he murdered his stepmother, Molly Young, when he was a boy of 14, and later he murdered workmates Bob Egle and Fred Briggs. He fed antimony sodium tartrate or antimony potassium tartrate to all and sundry and thallium acetate in sub-lethal doses to some people. Altogether 13 people, and maybe more, felt the repressed wrath of Graham Young. Graham Young was born in the less-than-fashionable London suburb of Neasden on 7 September 1947 and his mother, Margaret, died of tuberculosis 15 weeks later on 23 December. His father, Fred Young, was obviously not capable of managing a single parent family and Graham was passed to Fred’s sister and her husband who lived nearby at 768 North Circular Road. Graham’s 8-year-old sister Winifred went to live with her grandmother. Despite the care of his aunt, baby Graham was already displaying a common outward sign of the emotionally disturbed child: excessive rocking to-and-fro in his cot. Whether his aunt could ever have supplied all the love of a mother is unlikely, especially as Graham taxed her patience by being a poor sleeper. Whatever chance of emotional stability he had was upset by his having to go to hospital for an operation on his ears. When his father found a new wife both Winifred and 3-year-old Graham went to live back home. By now Graham was a very withdrawn little boy and his childhood years were made even more miserable by his stepmother, whom he openly resented, and who returned his animosity.

The SPD (Spin Physics Detector) is a planned spin physics experiment in the second interaction pointof the NICA collider that is under construction at JINR. The main goal of the experiment is the test ofbasic of the QCD via the study of the polarized structure of the nucleon and spin-related phenomena inthe collision of longitudinally and transversely polarized protons and deuterons at the center-of-massenergy up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to 1032 1/(cm2 s). The data rate at the maximum designluminosity is expected to reach 0.2 Tbit/s. Current approaches to SPD computing and offline softwarewill be presented. The plan of the computing and software R&D in the scope of the SPD TDRpreparation will be discussed.
