The most frequent form of workplace aggression is not physical, it is emotional and psychological in nature. Known by many names, emotional abuse at work is rapidly becoming recognized as pervasive and costly both in individual and organizational terms. Most of the research to date on emotional abuse at work has utilized survey and other quantitative methodologies in an effort to document the presence, prevalence, and impact of these behaviors. However, these methodologies are based on researchers’ definitions and theories of what constitutes emotional abuse rather than on the meaning given to these experiences by the targets of these behaviors. A thorough understanding of this phenomenon requires a scholarly appreciation of the target’s experience. Taking “feeling abused” as the criterion variable, this study examined target’s experiences based on interviews with people who self-identifed as having experienced difficulties with a boss, coworker, or subordinate. The interpersonal aspects of emotional abuse focused on the nature of behaviors exhibited and the respondents’ labeling of their experience. Consistent with elements of researchers’ definitions, behaviors were defined as abusive when they were repetitive, resulted in injury or harm to target, and were experienced as a lack of recognition of the individual’s integrity. Judgments of violation of standards of conduct and unsolicited nature of the behaviors were also related to respondents’ experiences. Relative power differential was also an important element. However, contrary to researchers’ definitions, actor intent was not central in defining the experience as abusive. The systemic aspect of emotional abuse was illustrated in the nature of organizational responding to concerns raised by respondents. These responses were of critical importance in respondents’ labeling of their experiences as abusive. The focus on the meaning of the behaviors for the respondents provides an enriched picture of key definitional elements. Implications of the findings for future research are discussed.

Abstract OBJECTIVE Dural sinus thrombosis (DST) is an uncommon cause of stroke. The safest and most effective therapy for DST has not been conclusively identified. METHODS A retrospective chart review of data for 31 patients who were treated for DST at our institution between 1992 and 2001 was performed. Four treatment strategies were identified, i.e., 1) medical observation only, 2) systemic anticoagulation (AC) therapy with heparin, 3) endovascular chemical thrombolysis with urokinase or tissue plasminogen activator and concurrent systemic AC therapy, and 4) mechanical endovascular clot thrombolysis with concurrent systemic AC therapy. Complications and clinical outcomes were assessed for each group. RESULTS Patients treated solely with medical observation fared the worst; four of five patients experienced intracranial hemorrhagic complications, and only two of five exhibited clinical improvement. Patients who received systemic AC therapy experienced no hemorrhagic complications, even when pretreatment hemorrhage was present; 75% (six of eight patients) exhibited improvement with AC therapy alone. Chemical thrombolysis was very effective in restoring sinus patency (90% of patients); however, 30% of patients (3 of 10 patients) experienced hemorrhagic complications. Sixty percent of patients (6 of 10 patients) who underwent chemical thrombolysis exhibited clinical improvement. Patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomies demonstrated a low hemorrhagic complication rate, and most (88%) made good recoveries. CONCLUSION Therapy directed at the underlying clot in DST must begin without delay. Our results suggest that supportive medical management of DST, without therapy directed at the clot or clotting process, is not effective. Systemic AC therapy, even in the presence of intracerebral hemorrhage, seems to be safe. Heparin can be safely titrated to yield partial thromboplastin times of 60 to 70 seconds. Chemical clot thrombolysis is efficacious in opening occluded sinuses but may cause intracranial hemorrhage. We currently recommend either systemic AC therapy or systemic AC therapy in conjunction with mechanical clot thrombectomy as a safe effective treatment for DST.

Gay men experience marked health disparities compared to heterosexual men, associated with profound discrimination. Resilience as a concept has received growing attention to increase understanding about how gay men promote and protect their health in the presence of adversity. Missing in this literature are the perspectives and experiences of gay men over 40 years. This investigation, drawing on grounded theory methods, examined how gay men over 40 years of age develop resilience over the course of their lives to promote and protect their health. In-depth interviews were undertaken with 25 men ranging between 40 and 76 years of age who experienced an array of health concerns including depression, anxiety, suicidality, and HIV. Men actively resist discrimination via three interrelated protective processes that dynamically influence the development of resilience over their life course: (a) building and sustaining networks, (b) addressing mental health, and (c) advocating for respectful care encounters. Initiatives to promote and protect the health of gay men must be rooted in the recognition of the systemic role of discrimination, while supporting men’s resilience in actively resisting discrimination.

Genograms are a widely used tool, well grounded in systemic theory. However the claims made in the literature regarding the therapeutic use and effects of the genogram have not been empirically explored or verified. This study therefore aimed to examine the extent to which the use and effects of genograms in clinical practice reflect the claims made in the literature. This study asked: what therapeutic tasks the genogram is used for, the specific pathways the genogram facilitates those tasks, and the mechanisms salient to the genogram that adds to clinical practice. Ten qualified Family Therapists participated in semi-structured interviews discussing their experiences. A Thematic Analysis was conducted. Five themes were identified: therapist-family joining; systemic exploration; therapist hypothesizing; family perturbation through cognitive change; family perturbation through experiential and behaviour change. This study found that genograms were used in some of the ways described in the literature: engagement, information gathering, hypothesizing and intervention aimed at cognitive change. The usefulness of the genogram was found to extend beyond ‘engagement’ and ‘information gathering’ to ‘therapist-family joining’ and ‘systemic exploration’ respectively. However, this study did not find the genogram was used to explore emotions, nor as an intervention aimed directly at behaviour change; instead, change at the experiential level was reported. The pathways the genogram facilitates therapeutic tasks are delineated, as are the mechanisms salient to the genogram that adds to clinical practice. Recommendations for further research were made. This included repeating this study with therapists from different training backgrounds, as well as undertaking a quantitative study examining genogram outcomes in terms of a measurable change in presenting problems.

Systemic family therapy is an approach to psychological therapy that is increasingly being offered to adults with learning disabilities and their families. To date there has been no published evaluation of the degree to which this is an approach that is effective in alleviating distress for this client group. The present study aimed to explore the experiences of adults with learning disabilities and their family members, who had attended systemic family therapy together. It also aimed to investigate whether it was an experience that had been helpful and in what ways, if any it impacted on their lives. Ten families and six adults with learning disabilities were interviewed about their experiences of attending systemic family therapy. The transcripts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Participants had mixed views about the degree to which systemic therapy had been helpful to them. Some family members saw it as having a positive impact on their views about and ways of approaching particular issues. However, for other families systemic therapy had not offered the kind of help they had expected and the experience was seen as relatively insignificant, vague or confusing. For the participants with learning disabilities there was a general sense that the opportunity to talk about difficulties was seen as valuable. However, the degree to which some of these participants felt they had a voice was limited. A combination of feeling pressure to 'know' what to say, and the presence of other family members in the meetings made it difficult for them to have their say. These findings suggest that although systemic family therapy can be helpful, particular aspects of the process may need to be adapted to ensure it is an approach that is accessible for this client group and their families.

This research focused on how school principals in the Limpopo Province apply induction to the newly appointed teachers. The school principals, SMTs and senior teachers are responsible for inducting and mentoring newly appointed teachers with the purpose of developing them professionally and to help them adjust to the school environment. Principals play a major role in seeing to it that newly appointed educators do not feel overwhelmed by the complexity of the teaching profession and the practice of teaching learners. The study aims at exploring the educator experiences of the induction process as well as to explore the process followed by principals in inducting educators. The research methodology used in this study is a qualitative case study which is explorative and descriptive by nature. Data was collected through one-on-one interviews, which involved principals and newly appointed teachers. The collected data was analysed and categorised into specific themes. The findings from data revealed numerous challenges that principals and newly appointed teachers experience during the induction process. Findings revealed that the induction process was not adequate and that the time allocated for induction was very little. There were neither standardised and continuous induction programmes nor educational support mechanisms to support newly appointed educators. Recommendations were that schools should be provided with the opportunity to review the induction process in line with the systemic changes in education in order to develop educators professionally.

The purpose of this research study has been to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experience of systemic lupus erythematosus from the perspective of the person who has the condition. A qualitative interpretive phenomenological approach was adopted influenced by Heidegger (1962) with emphasis on existential and interpretive dimensions over time. This comprehensive study involved a varied and diverse sample of thirty-two participants to allow differing experiences and multiple voices to be heard. The main data collection method was multiple, unstructured interviews. The participants also used a variety of other methods of their own choice including journals, art, music and photography to express ‘what lupus means to you?’ An integrated approach was used combining both the media of the participant’s choice, with an in-depth unstructured interview discussing their media. These varied data collection methods allowed valuable insights into the participant’s everyday world. The study used Wertz’s (1983) method of analysis. Three main findings were identified including, self-doubt and doubt, entrapment and coping and regaining resilience. Self-doubt and doubt explores the participant’s ongoing uncertainty about their symptoms, embodiment and condition and the continual doubts which they experience from others regarding the reality of their illness experience. Entrapment explores the many constraints and barriers that the participants experience in everyday life including the disease itself which enforces loss of control, continual change and disruption, challenges to self identity and integrity, relationships with others and themselves in terms of existential possibilities and goals. There were also a multitude of constraints and barriers imposed on the participants from health services and organisations. All these experiences engender the feeling of a ‘nothing disease’, a feeling of losing themselves. Coping and regaining resilience explored the wealth of coping strategies used within the participant’s everyday life and the ways they had been able to overcome adversity and find ways of moving forward regaining resilience. The study has identified multiple things which negatively impact upon those living with lupus, as well as positively impacts on a person’s ability to live and cope in everyday life. This opens up possible ways for reducing these constraints and that would have a positive impact on the person living with SLE. These constraints indicate some of the priorities health services and organisations should be focusing on to assist those with lupus to regain a more homelike being-in-the-world. The findings have real implications for the development of health care delivery which is person centred, designed around real needs and enables an improved quality of life. This study has been a further important step towards gaining an in-depth understanding of the everyday being-in-the-world of SLE.

Tourism is growing and is becoming more competitive. Destinations need to find elements which demonstrate their uniqueness, the singularity which allows them to differentiate themselves from others. This struggle for uniqueness makes economies become more competitive and competition is a central element in the dynamics of Tourism. Technology is also an added value for tourism competitiveness, as it allows destinations to become internationalised and known worldwide. In this scenario, research has increased as a means to study Tourism trends in fields such as sociology and marketing. Nevertheless, there are areas in which there is not much research done and which are fundamental: these are the areas concerned with identities, communication and interpersonal relations. In this regard, Linguistics has a major role for different reasons: firstly, it studies language itself and through it, communication, secondly, language conveys culture and, thirdly, it is by enriching language users that innovation in Tourism and in knowledge, as a whole, is made possible. This innovation, on the other hand, has repercussions in areas such as management, internationalisation and marketing as well. It is, therefore, the objective of this thesis to report on how learning experiences take place in Tourism undergraduate English language classes as well as to give an account of enhanced results in classes where mobile learning was adopted. In this way, an alliance between practice and research was established. This is beneficial for the teaching and learning process because by establishing links between research based insight and practice, the outcome is grounded knowledge which helps make solid educational decisions. This research, therefore, allows to better understand if learners accept working with mobile technologies in their learning process. Before introducing any teaching and learning approach, it was necessary to be informed, as well, of how English for tourism programmes are organised. This thesis also illustrates through the premises of Systemic Functional Linguistics that language use can be enhanced by using mobile technology in Tourism undergraduate language classes.
O setor do Turismo está em franco crescimento e é cada vez mais competitivo. Por estes motivos, cada destino precisa de encontrar formas de demonstrar a sua singularidade que lhe permita diferenciar-se dos demais. A necessidade de oferecer características singulares torna as economias mais competitivas e a concorrência é um elemento central na diferenciação. A tecnologia assumese como uma mais-valia para a competitividade no setor turístico, pois permite a internacionalização dos destinos. Neste cenário, a investigação acerca das tendências no setor aumentou em diversas áreas, nomeadamente na Sociologia e no Marketing. No entanto, existem áreas em que não existe ainda muita investigação: tais como a área das identidades, comunicação e relações interpessoais. Neste campo os estudos linguísticos têm um papel importante por diversas razões: em primeiro lugar, estudam a língua em uso, em segundo lugar, a lingua é o veículo que permite o intercâmbio cultural e, por fim, é através do enriquecimento dos seus falantes que é possível inovar no setor do Turismo e no conhecimento como um todo. Esta inovação, por outro lado, tem repercussões em áreas como a gestão, a internacionalização e o Marketing. É, portanto, objetivo desta tese dar a conhecer experiências de uso de língua que ocorrem em aulas de língua Inglesa com alunos de Turismo, assim como mostrar os resultados de reforço de uso de língua em contextos em que a aprendizagem através de dispositivos móveis foi adotada. Para o efeito, desenvolveram-se estratégias que conciliaram a investigação e a prática letiva que foram benéficas para o processo de ensino/aprendizagem uma vez que permitiram tomar decisões educativas fundamentadas na investigação. A presente tese permite compreender melhor se os alunos aceitam trabalhar com tecnologias móveis no processo de aprendizagem. Permite, igualmente, compreender de que forma estão organizados os tópicos dos programas de língua Inglesa em cursos de Turismo. Por fim, esta tese também ilustra através das premissas da Linguística Funcional Sistémica, que o uso da língua pode ser reforçado recorrendo às tecnologias móveis em aulas de língua Inglesa em cursos de Licenciatura em Turismo.

This study seeks to explore anorexia nervosa as experienced within the South African coloured community in the specific. It represents an examination of themes within the participants’ depictions, discovering those themes that concur with existent literature, as well as discerning novel themes within the target group. Literature proves to yield varied results with regard to anorexia as presented in diverse cultures. Sufficient awareness is lacking within the South African context, where a scarcity of available literature that explores the experiences of the coloured anorexic individual necessitates the need for the current study. The contributing factors are viewed to involve societal, cultural, and familial aspects, all of which are situated within a systemic frame of reference. Systems theory provides the foundation within which these factors are explored, aiming to provide the reader with in-depth knowledge as to the functioning of the anorectic patient. It should be noted that these factors are interconnected, influencing each other in a circular manner. Attention is awarded to not only larger systems of societal and cultural influences, but also serves to encompass the functioning of the anorectic within the familial system. The reciprocity that exists within and between sub-systems is investigated, with the focus being the interrelatedness between members. Recursive feedback and associated processes are examined as they relate to the development and maintenance of anorexia. A qualitative research design was applied, where semi-structured interviews served as the chosen data collection strategy. Interviews were conducted at the hospital where they received treatment, and aimed to extract the meanings inherent in the participants’ experiences. A limited availability of diagnosed coloured anorexic individuals resulted in two willing participants partaking in the study. Thematic networks enabled the researcher to explore their representations in depth, leading to the subsequent organising of themes for further analysis. Two global themes emerged upon examination, the first of which was identified as “familial impact and patterns”, consisting of organising themes of relational positioning and interactional processes. Organising themes of expectations and internal emotional states constitute the second global theme of “control”. These themes are supported by a variety of basic themes, all of which serve to enhance the understanding of the organising themes, contributing to the respective global themes. Extensive exploration of the discovered themes followed, with the investigation proceeding within a systems theory framework. A conclusive discussion serves the purpose of bringing the exploration to a close. Relevant literature is incorporated into the discussion, providing the reader with an integrated understanding of the findings of the study within the broader field of anorexia nervosa. Copyright

This dissertation addresses gaps in the child welfare literature from a systemic perspective. The extant literature focuses primarily on children in care, which excludes 90% of children and families involved with the system. In addition, foster parent retention has become an area of primary concern because there are fewer individuals who are willing to foster. Research that examines all children involved with the child welfare system and ways to improve foster parent experiences is imperative to address these areas of need. The two studies herein address these gaps in the literature by examining children who are in contact with the child welfare system but largely remain out of care, children who are in care, and foster caregivers. The first study compared two groups of children in the Ontario child welfare system: those who remain with their natural family and those in out-of-home care. The emotional and behavioural functioning, prosocial behaviour, education, health, and resources (internal and external) of these two groups of children were examined and relatively few significant differences were identified. However, it was found that, despite having comparable mental health and educational functioning, children who remained in their natural homes had significantly fewer external resources than children in out-of-home care. Children in out-of-home care may have increased access to community resources despite having similar needs to children who remain in their natural home environments. Additional research is needed to replicate and better understand these findings so that the child welfare system can best meet the needs of its children. The second study examined how foster child characteristics, as well as other foster parent and agency factors, impact Canadian foster parents’ experience of fostering, particularly related to agency workers, the fostering system, training, and foster children and their placements. Results identified that foster children’s needs and maltreatment histories, as reported by foster parents, were not significantly associated with perceptions about fostering. The factors that were the most highly associated with positive perceptions about fostering were increased practical and emotional support. These findings indicate that child welfare agencies can improve foster parents perceptions about fostering by providing sufficient practical and emotional support. A monitoring system that allows foster parents to provide regular feedback would be beneficial in continuing to evaluate their fostering experiences, assess the impact of interventions targeting foster parent support, and address any areas of concern. As a whole, the results of this dissertation highlight the importance of providing both children and foster parents in the child welfare system with appropriate supports that promote positive child functioning and foster parent experiences.

This research used interviews and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology to explore the experiences of care staff who attended systemic consultations within an Intellectual Disability (ID) service. A systematic literature review revealed limited research in the area of systemic approaches used with people with IDs and their networks. Research questions encompassed 'How do care staff experience systemic consultations that they have attended in ID services'?, 'What do care staff find helpful in systemic consultations'?, and, 'What do care staff find unhelpful in systemic consultations'?. Seven participants were interviewed, and interview data was transcribed and analysed using IPA. Five superordinate themes emerged; 'Not knowing what to expect; it was something different', 'Our relationships improved', 'An outside person shone a new light enabling us to think and work differently', 'Making sense of what we have achieved', and 'They made us feel validated'. The research findings highlighted important clinical implications. These included a need for the context to be 'warmed' and relational reflexivity (Bunham, 2005) to be applied in order to help care staff prepare for systemic consultations and feel supported. Future research directions are also discussed in order to develop the evidence-base for systemic approaches within ID services.

AbstractIn contrast to India, Tanzania imports all its opiate medication, yet there too, need is unmet. This chapter reports findings from a sustained collaborative effort in Tanzania to understand the roots of undertreatment of severe cancer pain. It analyses the complex sources of this cancer care failure, contrasting the Tanzanian situation to the Ugandan experience of providing more widespread access to opiate medication for severe pain. The chapter describes findings from multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary workshops in Tanzania, documenting critical causal feedback loops that generate sustained undertreatment of severe pain, and identifies innovations that could turn this outcome around.

AbstractGiven that climate change is a complex, systemic risk, addressing it requires new knowledge. One way of generating such new knowledge is through co-production, or collaborative development by a range of stakeholders with diverse backgrounds embedded in trans-disciplinary processes. This chapter reflects on emerging experiences of co-producing decision-relevant climate information to enable climate-resilient planning and adaptation to climate change in Africa. It outlines principles that have emerged and evolved through experiential learning from a wide range of co-production processes in Africa. It also uses case study experience from various contexts to highlight some of the more contextual challenges to co-production such as trust, power and knowledge systems and institutional factors (mandates, roles and incentives) and illustrates ways that trans-disciplinary co-production has addressed these challenges to mainstream a response to the climate challenge.

For more than twenty-five years, the sonification field has been attempting to establish itself as a primary body of knowledge communicating through sound. Despite multiple efforts to embrace the interdisciplinary nature of the field and the subjective nature of sound, we wonder: is the tendency for dealing with such challenges through an objective, functional communication, with a single interpretation criterion, limiting the epistemic boundaries of action? How can a subjectively perceived medium such as sound be embraced in all its aesthetic dimensions? We propose a conceptual transition through the reframing of a sonification as a living system for creating aesthetic experiences. This will be achieved by drawing notions from phenomenology, embodied perception, human-computer interaction and soundscape theory. A systemic sonification distinguishes itself as an ever-evolving system built on dynamic structures that actively responds to changes in its environment and interactions from surrounding beings. Driven by a series of emerging concepts of non-linearity, networks, nested systems and intertwined relationships, the system’s resilience and adaptability grows with each interaction, recentring the human protagonist as the weaver of his/her aesthetic experience through a self-transcendent process that expands the perception field.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H<sub>2</sub>-ICEs) are subject to increased attention thanks to their extremely low criteria pollutant emission and near-zero CO<sub>2</sub> tailpipe emissions. However, to further minimize exhaust emissions and increase the efficiency of a H<sub>2</sub>-ICE, it is important to carefully control the relative air-fuel ratio of operation, i.e. Lambda (λ), which will lead in turn to an optimal combustion process. The precise λ control mainly relies upon the methodology to calculate λ on board of the engine, where the availability of reliable sensors specifically-developed for hydrogen combustion is currently limited. In this article, a comparative analysis of different methodologies for the calculation of λ is performed, comparing four methodologies: exhaust gas analysis through a Spindt-Brettschneider approach (λ<sub>EMI</sub>), raw Universal Exhaust Gas Oxygen (λ<sub>R-UEGO</sub>), processed Universal Exhaust Gas Oxygen (λ<sub>P-UEGO</sub>) and speed-density (λ<sub>SD</sub>) outputs. The experimental data used to compare the four methodologies were acquired through detailed and systematic experimentation on a fully-instrumented single-cylinder H<sub>2</sub>-ICE. Results show that the λ<sub>P-UEGO</sub> is the closest one to the reference Spindt-Brettschneider analysis λ<sub>EMI</sub> and the most robust to ample variations in the nominal λ values. The sensor’s raw UEGO output λ<sub>R-UEGO</sub> is instead affected by the sensor calibration which is usually performed across a range of carbon-based fuels, a procedure that introduces a bias. The results can be used for the selection of the correct methodology to calculate λ in a H<sub>2</sub>-ICE and to choose optimal sensors for mobile applications.</div></div>

In the present study we investigate what caused these reforms to fail from two angles. First, we examine the efficacy of the latest teacher professional development (TPD) initiative in Indonesia, Pengembangan Keprofesian Berkelanjutan or PKB (Continuing Professional Development), and identify the factors affecting its efficacy. We found that some essential features of effective TPD are missing in PKB. The PKB programme has not targeted teachers based on years of experience, has not followed up teachers with post-training activities, has not incorporated teaching practice through lesson enactment, and has not built upon teacher existing practice. Second, our analysis demonstrates that PKB's weaknesses have existed in Indonesia's previous TPD initiatives as far back as four decades ago. This indicates that the long-term problem of TPD’s ineffectiveness is driven by different elements of the education system beyond the TPD’s technical and operational aspects. Our system-level analysis points out that merely improving the technical aspects of TPD would be insufficient given the Indonesian education system’s lack of coherence surrounding teacher quality. The problems surrounding the provision of effective TPD is more complex than simply a matter of replacing the “old” with the “new” initiative. The change requires a reorientation of the education system to produce high-quality teachers.

The aim of this case study is to provide a systemic leadership framework for responding to complexity that can support the continued capability development in the transformation portfolios of government. This case study is part of Project X, a broader research programme seeking to generate insights into major government projects and programmes. This qualitative case study has sought to generate insights from project delivery professionals with significant experience in the delivery of the government’s transformation and service delivery portfolios. This research views leadership as an activity, rather than focusing on the competencies or styles of individuals holding leadership positions. This view, based on what the academic literature refers to as leadership-as-practice approaches, accommodates the contributions of the individuals appointed to formal leadership roles while confronting broader, systemic aspects of leadership such as alternative sources of leadership.

Financial dollarization is a key factor behind systemic financial fragility in Latin America. The experience shows that dedollarization can be achieved but can just as easily be missed, and worse: blunt dedollarization measures repressing dollarization may easily fail to solve fragility and, instead, foster risky short-term debt or provoke massive financial disintermediation and crisis. This paper analyzes the sources of liability dollarization in a portfolio framework and identifies the failures leading to excessive dollarization meriting policy intervention as well as the reasons why dedollarization policy often goes awry. It then derives an analytically sound multipronged domestic dedollarization program that takes into account the risks of misdiagnosis and the experience, both successful and failed. This program centers around the development of good local currency substitutes for dollar debt, such as CPI-indexed debt, rather than the repression of dollar debt.

In this report, we analyze the 2021 data, focusing on how respondents feel the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced their sexual and reproductive health in two core areas: fertility preferences and access to care, including use of telehealth. We note disparities according to individuals’ race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, income level and economic well-being. To assess the ongoing scope and magnitude of the impacts of the pandemic, we also examine findings on comparable measures from the 2020 and 2021 GSRHE studies. These data provide four key findings: The pandemic has continued to shift fertility preferences and impede access to sexual and reproductive health care, including contraceptive services. The impacts reported in the summer of 2021 are smaller than those reported earlier in the pandemic but remain pervasive. The pandemic continues to have disproportionate effects on the sexual and reproductive health of those already experiencing systemic social and health inequities. Telehealth services are bridging gaps in sexual and reproductive health care resulting from pandemic-related upheaval, particularly for those who already experience barriers to accessing health care.

Анотація:
The article deals with the problem of training future computer science teachers for the use of cloud technologies. The authors analyzed courses from leading universities to study cloud technologies. On this basis the model of application and studying of cloud technologies in the process of training of future teachers of informatics was developed. The basic principles of this model are proposed: systematic, gradual, continuous. It contains target, content, operating and effective component. Therefore, the stages of using cloud computing technology were proposed: as a means of organizing learning activities, as an object of study, as a means of development. The article summarizes the experience of designing a cloud-based learning environment (CBLE). The model is based on such philosophical and pedagogical approaches as systemic, competent, activity, personality-oriented, synergistic. Hybrid cloud is the most appropriate model for this environment. It combines public and private cloud platforms. CBLE also requires the integration of cloud and traditional learning tools. The authors described the most appropriate teaching methods for cloud technologies such as classroom learning, interactive and e-learning, practical methods. The article contains many examples of how to apply the proposed methodology in a real learning process.

Electronic medical record (EMR) systems are increasingly used in developing countries to improve quality of care while increasing efficiency. There is little systematic evidence, however, regarding EMRs' benefits and costs. This case study documents the implementation and use of an EMR system at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Three EMR systems are now in operation for primary care, outpatient and inpatient hospital care. The evidence suggests that the primary care system has improved efficiency of care delivery and human resources management, and may have decreased incidence of fraud. The hospital systems, however, have lower coverage and are less popular among staff. The greater success of the primary care system may be due to greater investment, a participatory development process, an open workplace culture, and software appropriately tailored to the workflow. Moving forward, efforts should be made to exploit data housed in EMRs for medical and policy research.

This working paper is the product of the Living Off-Grid Food and Infrastructure Collaboration. It is designed to bring together our thinking on how infrastructure can shape the food and nutritional security of urban marginalised populations. Infrastructure assemblages include the material (physical and technological), as well as the political and systemic factors that ‘govern’ how infrastructure is developed and used. Urban food systems are made up of public and private actors, and market and governance processes that shape the cost and availability of food in different urban contexts. At the intersection of urban food systems and infrastructure assemblages lies the food and nutrition security of urban dwellers. The framing of contemporary debates and policy priorities with respect to both nutrition and infrastructure are heavily conditioned by presumptions – in favour of formality and griddedness, for example, or of the need to raise agricultural productivity – which fail to reflect the reality of marginalised communities in Southern cities. For these communities, their experience is one of hybridity, with formal and informal infrastructures and economies central to their lives and livelihoods. These hybrid arrangements are imbued with power structures and socio-political dynamics that are context specific and further condition communities’ experiences. Together, these are the factors that condition or shape the possibilities for individuals and households pursuing different food strategies. However, there is a failure to reflect this reality in the conceptualisation of infrastructure challenges, leading to unworkable solutions and policies that end up perpetuating problems. There is an urgent need to reframe problematic assumptions, starting first and foremost from the entry point of urban informal settlements in the global South. By taking food as a lens in this process, we illuminate these contexts, and how they relate to hybrid infrastructure arrangements and potential alternatives. This reformulation is vital at this critical juncture, when Southern cities need infrastructure development that meets the needs of rapidly changing demographics without locking cities and nations into unsustainable pathways.

Recent questions surrounding the repatriation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of those who traveled to join the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the reintegration of violent extremists in conflict zones including Somalia, Nigeria, Libya, and Mali, and the impending release of scores of homegrown violent extremists from prisons in the United States and Europe have heightened policymaker and practitioner interest in violent extremist disengagement and reintegration (VEDR). Although a number of programs to reintegrate violent extremists have emerged both within and outside of conflict zones, significant questions remain regarding their design, implementation, and effectiveness. To advance our understanding of VEDR, this report draws insights from a review of the literature on ex-combatant disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR). The literature on DDR typically adopts a “whole of society” approach, which helps us to understand how systemic factors may influence VEDR at the individual level and outcomes at the societal level. Despite the important differences that will be reviewed, the international community’s thirty-year experience with DDR—which includes working with violent extremists—offers important insights for our understanding of VEDR.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Modern in-vehicle experiences are brimming with functionalities and convenience driven by automation, digitalization, and electrification. While automotive manufacturers are competing to provide the best systems to their customers, there is no common ground to evaluate these in-vehicle experiences as they become increasingly complex. Existing automotive guidelines do not offer thresholds for cognitive distraction, or—more appropriately—“disengagement.” What can researchers can do to change this?</div><div class="htmlview paragraph"><b>Evaluation of the In-vehicle Experience</b> discusses acceptable levels of disengagement by evaluating the driving context and exploring how system reliability can translate to distraction and frustration. It also covers the need to test systems for their complexity and ease of use, and to prevent users from resorting to alternative systems while driving (e.g., smartphones). It highlights the value in naturalistic data generation using vehicles already sold to customers and the issues around privacy and trust concerning such methods.
