In this essay, I will discuss about the changing relationship between China and the Roman Empire in the long stream of history from Chinese historiography. While doing research I found that in Qin dynasty two countries have direct interaction with each other, but faded in Tang dynasty. Multiple historical resource written in Tang dynasty were overlap with previous source written during earlier period like Qin. The emergence of the Great Silk Road was associated with China’s westward expansion under the Han and Tang dynasties. Under the Tang dynasty western frontiers of Celestial Empire were settled, and Chinese order and culture were established in the new lands included into the empire. At the same time and in the same place, a specific literature of this era, frontier poetry, appeared. From these poems one can obtain indirect information about the Great Silk Road and the lands around it.

But literati of that time conceptualized their geopolitical landscape very differently. Abstract: In 1911 a Dunhuang manuscript fragment, later known as P.2526, was made available to Chinese scholars via microfilm. Since then, generations of scholars have made forays into the study of the hypothetical original text of P.2526 and the context of its composition. This endeavor, however, seems to be a lost cause. As Albert Dien points out, when one identification is rejected, without any direct evidence, it would be equally problematic to assign another title to the fragment. In this paper, I study P.2526 as a Tang artifact in the form in which it has come down to us, without trying

Abstract Materials dating from the Liao dynasty usually record the founding year of the Khitan Empire as 907; this was done deliberately, rather than it being caused by the negligence of historians. The official history records of the Khitan Empire contain two completely different narratives of the founding year: the account of “Junji Taiyi deity Repeatedly Appearing” from the “Biography of Taizu” in Liaoshi reflects the original appearance of the history of the empire foundation period in the first year of the Shence era (916). Other records were reworded by later historians, which caused the

Abstract Textual evidence for the existence of Srivijaya (variously addressed as a state, kingdom, or empire in southeastern Sumatra) is very limited and rests on inscriptions as well as a manageable number of pre-modern Chinese texts. According to prevailing scholarly conventions, the term Shilifoshi 室利佛逝 (and variants) in early Tang dynasty texts was replaced in the Song dynasty by the term Sanfoqi 三佛齊. This connection allowed for an extension of Srivijayan history from the early Tang in the seventh century to the mid-Song period in the twelfth century. This essay argues that preconceived in

The genesis and initial development of Bohai Buddhism is due to several factors. Firstly, the beginning of Buddhism in the Bohai State was laid by the penetration and influence of the Buddhist culture of the Sui and Tang dynasties; the carriers of this trend could be the Mohe from Yingzhou, who were part of the conglomerate of the creators of the state. Secondly, the integration of Goguryeo Buddhism and its followers who inhabited the Tumen River basin played a significant role. Later, the Buddhist culture of the Tang Dynasty exerted an ever-increasing influence on the development of Bohai Bud

The extensive documentary evidence collected and analysed in the previous studies in this issue suggest a preliminary conclusion that can be summarised as follows: from the collapse of the Han dynasty to the glorious days of the Tang dynasty, the peoples living in the Western Regions along the Silk Road used multiple co-existing forms of money – grain, cloth and coins – with one of these three items becoming predominant according to changes in political and/or economic circumstances. However, this multicurrency system did not outlive the political, economic and fiscal upheavals that shook the

In Ancient China, the usage of spices has a long history. Following the establishment of the Silk Road during the Han Dynasty, spices were eventually introduced into Chinese culture through commercial exchanges. Before the Tang dynasty, the narrow access to spices and their small application scope confined them to the aristocratic class. As time went by, due to the national power of the Tang Dynasty, the empire conquered parts of the Western Regions and was recognized by the surrounding countries. Therefore, the Silk Road flourished, starting the process of the popularization of Spice Culture.

The dialogue between Christianity and Buddhism began during the Tang dynasty (618–907) when East Syrian Christian missionaries from Persia arrived in China in 635. At this time, Buddhism was prospering under the Tang Empire, and the “Church of the East” was established, known as the “Brilliant (or Radiant) Teaching” (Jingjiao 景教). Historical records and archaeological evidence indicate that the Jingjiao church employed the method of “matching concepts” (geyi 格義). At the core of this study is Zhang Yuxian, the rebel leader, and his allegiance to a spirit. The latter suggested moving from Guangdong, the territory of the Southern Han empire (917–971), and the original area of the rebellion, to Jiangxi, the territory of the Southern Tang empire (937–976). The article explores the mutual cultural influence between the First and the Second Turkic Khaganates and the early medieval China. The authors consider the VI-VII centuries AD as an object of chronological research. In the 6th century, the first Turkic Khaganate was established and quickly became an important geopolitical neighbor of the Chinese Empire. The historical development of the Turkic Khaganate was closely linked to the Chinese Empire: it was the closest ally during periods of prosperity and the most significant threat during the Khaganate’s decline. After a long political struggle during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty, Wu Zetian finally changed the name of the empire from Tang to Zhou in 690, thereby establishing her authority and rule. Despite this, opposition forces persisted against her within the court and the country. In response, Wu Zetian initiated a series of political and cultural reforms to further solidify her personal authority. One of these reforms was the WuZhou New Characters, introduced during her reign. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the main reasons for the emergence and demise of
