In its most recent circumscription the section comprised 43 species, mostly of rain forest understorey trees, distributed from eastern India to Fiji, and in Madagascar (Jones, 1980: unpublished Phd. The analyses were based on 158 species of Bidessini and 57 phylogenetically informative adult morphological characters. Analyses under equal weighting produced nine most parsimonious cladograms of 98 steps (CI = 0.65, RI = 0.90, RC = 0.59). A consensus tree generated from the nine MPCs and a preferred MPC were both resolved. According to rDNA internal transcribed spacer and pollen morphology, the native Illiciaceae can be devided into two sections－ Sect. Illicium and Sect. Cymbostemon. And the most taxonomic features among the species are similar and constant, that supports the relatively natural monophyletic character of this genus.
