Abstract This paper reports the performance of materials in a laboratory-simulated medium-Btu coal gasification environment from an ongoing MPC/GRI/IITRI program. A strong dependence of corrosion on temperature is confirmed by an Arrhenius plot. Oxide spallation has been found to be associated with the deviation of parabolic rates that were established in initial exposure. A brief review of corrosion dependence on pressure, temperature, H2S, and alloy composition is presented. Microstructural observations are also presented which help interpret the kinetic data.
