As events triggering early osteoarthritis onset can be related to mechanical stress and proinflammatory signaling, we investigated the effect of different mechanical strain protocols on the expression of proinflammatory genes, as well as extracellular matrix remodelling in human synovial fibroblasts. Three distinct models of tensile stretching were applied: static isotropic tensile strain at 0 Hz, 16% tension for 48 h; short-term high-frequency cyclic tension at 1 Hz, 10% tension for 4 h; and dynamic tensile stretching for 48 h, consisting of two blocks of moderate stretching at 0.2 Hz, 2%, advanced stretching at 0.5 Hz, 15%, or a combination of both. General signs of inflammation were present after static isotropic tension, whereas short-term high-frequency cyclic tension showed increased levels of IL-6 paired with diminished levels of IL-1β. Reduced inflammatory effects of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β were observed when exposed to advanced stretching. Long-term tensile strain induced extracellular matrix remodelling at the gene and protein levels. While hyaluronan acid synthesis was increased with static tensile strain, dynamic tensile stretching had a reducing effect. Our study revealed that proinflammatory markers were activated by mechanical strain as seen in static isotropic tension and short-term high-frequency tensile strain, whereas long-term exposure induced extracellular matrix remodelling processes.

The splitting tensile method for the tensile strength of concrete is usually used in structural applications, so it is great important in the investigating the relation between the direct tensile strength and the splitting strength. But the relationship between the splitting strength and the direct tensile strength is not consolidatly confirmed at home and abroad. In order to obtain the exact results, the experimental apparatus for concrete of the direct tension are designed, which resolves the difficulty of ensuring that the load is truly axial. Tests of the direct tension are performanced on three different concrete mixes (C20,C40,C60) at 3, 7, 14 , 28 and 60 days and the test data do not scatter. The relations between the tensile strength and the cube compressive strength are obtained and a formula for investigating the relation between the direct tensile strength and the splitting strength are proposed.

Cricothyroid adduction increases tension to the vocal folds, thus increasing fundamental frequency and upper pitch range. We treated 10 patients with cricothyroid muscle dysfunction using this technique. Preoperative electromyographic, acoustic, and perceptual analysis was performed. Intraoperatively the effect of increasing tension on the fundamental, falsetto, and basal frequencies was measured by using a strain gauge to the adducting suture at several tensions and a cervical microphone connected to a pitch meter. Postoperative acoustic and perceptual analysis was then performed up to 18 months later. Analysis of pitch vs. tension curves indicates a near-linear relationship until very high tensions are applied. Statistically significant improvement was achieved in both acoustic and perceptual analysis, although some deterioration was noted between early and late results. Cricothyroid adduction is indicated for a large range of vocal fold tension problems.

Compression and tension tests were performed on specimens made from high-early-strength concrete, where the strength acceleration was achieved by using a chloride-based accelerating admixture. Comparison with specimens made from concrete without the admixture showed that the concrete with the admixture was significantly weaker in tension for equal compressive strength.Curing times ranged from 3 days to 3 or 4 months while compressive strengths ranged from 16 to 37 MPa depending on the batch and the age at testing. Three types of tension tests, the standard split cylinder test, the standard modulus of rupture test, and a pull-out test were used in the study.Current design equations that relate tensile strength of concrete to the measured compressive strength may overestimate the actual tensile strength of high-early-strength concrete where acceleration is achieved through the addition of an admixture. These equations are found in provisions for anchorage, development, and splicing of reinforcement, shear and torsion strength, and the prediction of service load deflections. Cable is normally recovered by hauling in from ahead, with the cable guiding the ship. In an early paper, Zajac presented a method for recovery, proposed by Shea, in which the cable is overrun, and hauled in tending aft. The potential advantage is lower tension in recovery. Cable was recovered with overrun in two recent exercises. The tensions and cable angles observed at the ship in these exercises are used to work out cable configurations and bottom tensions. The calculations show that the bottom tension was considerably less than it is for normal recovery in both exercises. As the overrun is increased, the tension decreases, and tends to a limiting value defined by the ship speed and the slack rate at which the cable was originally laid. Recovery with overrun is practical and advantageous.

While undoubtedly the historiography of witchcraft has undergone a renaissance in the past two decades, these developments have not always been speedy to filter down the regional incidents, especially in the instance of the Lancashire trials. Moreover, studies of this region have had a tendency to focus upon the two renowned trials of 1612 and 1633. The purpose of this study is to provide a more extensive and inclusive study of allegedly supernatural incidents in this region, which acknowledges historiographical progression. In the process a multitude of incidents and individuals which have been neglected will be assessed, such as the 'blesser' Mary Shawe, the dispossession of Richard Dugdale et al. In doing so not only will much be revealed about the evolution of beliefs regarding the supernatural in the local community, but also how they were interpreted and manipulated nationally, and in the process both reflected and made significant contributions to politico-religious debates

In recent years, the increasingly precise constraints on the value of the Hubble constant, H0, have highlighted a discrepancy between the results arising from early-time and late-time measurements. A potential solution to this so-called Hubble tension is the hypothesis that we reside in a cosmic void, i.e. an underdense cosmic neighbourhood characterized by a faster local expansion rate. In this thesis, we model this scenario through the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi formalism for an isotropic but inhomogeneous universe containing matter, curvature and a cosmological constant, which we denote by ΛLTB. We numerically implement this framework with two different formulations for the local matter density profile, respectively based upon a more realistic Gaussian ansatz and the idealized scenario of the so-called Oppenheimer-Snyder model. We then constrain the background cosmology and the void parameters involved in each case through a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis with a combination of recent data sets: the Pantheon Sample of type Ia supernovae, a collection of baryon acoustic oscillations data points from different galaxy surveys and the distance priors extracted from the latest Planck data release. For both models, the resulting bounds on the investigated parameter space suggest a preference for a -13% density drop with a size of approximately 300 Mpc, interestingly matching the prediction for the so-called KBC void already identified on the basis of independent analyses using galaxy distributions. We quantify the level of improvement on the Hubble tension by analyzing the ΛLTB constraints on the B-band absolute magnitude of the supernovae, which provides the calibration for the local measurements of H0. Since no significant difference is observed with respect to an analogous fit performed with the standard ΛCDM model, we conclude that the potential presence of a local void does not resolve the tension.

In the mammalian embryo, between 3.5 and 4.5 days after fertilisation, the cells of the inner cell mass evolve from a uniform aggregate to an ordered structure with two distinct tissue layers - the primitive endoderm and epiblast. It was originally assumed that cells differentiated to form these layers in situ, but more recent evidence suggests that both cell types arise scattered throughout the inner cell mass, and it is thus proposed that the tissue layers self-organise by physical mechanisms after the specification of the two cell types. We have developed a computational model based on the subcellular element method to combine theoretical and experimental work and elucidate the mechanisms that drive this self-organisation. The subcellular element method models each cell as a cloud of infinitesimal points that interact with their nearest neighbours by local forces. Our method is built around the introduction of a tensile cortex in each cell by identifying boundary elements and using a Delaunay triangulation to define a network of forces that act within this boundary layer. Once the cortex has been established, we allow the tension in the network to vary locally at interfaces, modelling the exclusion of myosin at cell-cell interfaces and consequent reduction in tension. The model is validated by testing the simulated interfaces in cell doublets and comparing to experimental data and previous theoretical work. Furthermore, we introduce dynamic tension to model blebbing in primitive endoderm cells. We investigate the effects of cortical tension, differential interfacial tension, and blebbing on interfaces, rearrangement, and sorting. By establishing quantitative measurements of sorting we produce phase diagrams of sorting magnitude given system parameters and find that robust sorting in a 30 cell aggregate is best achieved by a combination of differential interfacial tension and blebbing.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the ways in which 19th century Gothic fiction novelists Charles Brockden Brow and James Hogg explore the themes of religious enthusiasm and divine revelation. A close look at these texts reveals a common interest in the tension between the imagination and reality. By analyzing the philosophical and theological roots of these issues it becomes clear that Wieland and Confessions of a Justified Sinner mirror the anxieties of 19th century Anglo American culture. Questions regarding voice and authority, the importance of testimony, and religious seduction are common to both novels. I maintain that these authors comment on the obscure nature of human rationale by presenting readers with narrators that exhibit traits of delusion and spiritual awakening.

This study approaches wood quality in young trees by very early screening – and consequent selection for propagation – on the basis of physical and mechanical properties. In chapter 1 corewood properties are reviewed and the importance and problems associated with early screening are discussed. Due to randomly distributed reaction wood in young trees it is advantageous to lean trees to avoid intermixing of the two wood types and minimise any uncertainty in the results. In chapter 2 physical and mechanical properties are described for opposite and compression wood in a population of Pinus radiata comprising of 50 families, at a young (<3 years) age. The dynamic stiffness was determined using the resonance acoustic technique. Density was measured using water displacement method, and longitudinal and volumetric shrinkage were measured from green to ~5% moisture content. The compression wood and opposite wood differ significantly in all the measured properties. Compression wood was characterised by high density and high longitudinal shrinkage. The mean stiffness of opposite wood was 3.0 GPa with a mean standard deviation of 0.39, and the mean longitudinal shrinkage of opposite wood was 0.99% with mean standard deviation of 0.31 across the samples examined. This variation in stiffness and longitudinal shrinkage in opposite wood can be exploited to screen for wood quality. The variation in stiffness and longitudinal shrinkage within a family was comparable to variation among families. In spite of large within site variability it was possible to distinguish between the worst and the best families in opposite wood at young age. In chapter 3 ranking of selected families of Pinus radiata was done based on microfibril angle, which is considered as the main factor influencing both stiffness and longitudinal shrinkage. The ranking was compared with ranking done using acoustic velocity which is more practical and fast method of screening trees. The mean MFA in opposite wood was 39° with a mean standard deviation of 3.7 and in compression wood the mean MFA was 44° with a mean standard deviation of 2.9. The variation in MFA in opposite wood offers opportunities to breed for trees with low MFA. A strong negative correlation (R=-0.68) between acoustic velocity squared and MFA in opposite wood suggested that the resonance technique can be used effectively to screen very young wood rather than using MFA. At high MFA, the cell wall matrix also plays an important role in determining the mechanical and physical properties of the wood. At present the chemical composition of wood samples is determined by wet chemical analysis, which is time consuming and laborious. Therefore, it is impractical to characterise large numbers of samples. Mechanical properties, particularly tanδ (dissipation of energy), which changes with temperature and frequency as the structure of the material changes at the molecular level, was studied using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The idea was to assess if it can be used as a quality trait for tree screening instead of wet chemical analysis. Compression wood and opposite wood were characterised for storage modulus and tanδ at constant moisture content. In practice the instrument used, TA instrument Q800, was unable to provide the desired range of temperature and humidity so no glass transition at 9% moisture content in the temperature range of 10°C to 85°C at 1 and 10 Hz frequency was observed that might be attributed to the hemicelluloses (or lignin). In spite of the huge difference in chemical composition of opposite and compression wood, the difference in their mean tanδ at 25°C and 1 Hz values was just 7%. The positive correlation between MFA and tanδ in opposite wood suggested that MFA also plays a role in the dissipation of energy. The strong relationship between storage modulus and dynamic modulus (R=0.74) again justifies the reliability of resonance technique to screen young wood for stiffness. Concurrently eighty seven, two-year-old leant Eucalyptus regnans were studied for growth strains along with other physical and mechanical properties, independently in tension and opposite wood. The leant trees in Eucalyptus regnans vary in their average growth strain. Strong correlation between measured and calculated strain (R=0.93) suggests that the quick split method can be used to screen large populations for growth stresses. Tension wood was characterised by high density and was three times stiffer than opposite wood and twice as high in volumetric shrinkage. The high longitudinal shrinkage in opposite wood could be due to comparatively high MFAs in opposite wood of the young trees. There was no correlation between growth strain values and other measured properties in opposite wood. It is possible to screen for growth strain at age two, without any adverse effect on stiffness and shrinkage properties.

Abstract The purposes of the present research were to compare the outcome after Achilles tendon rupture repair in two postoperative regimens, to compare Achilles tendon elongation in two postoperative treatment methods, to compare the effects of two postoperative methods on motor performance aspects such as simple reaction time, choice reaction time, speed of movement, foot tapping speed and coordination, to test the mechanical properties of the recently developed poly-L/D-lactide (PLDLA) sutures and Maxon® sutures when implanted in the Achilles tendons of rabbits, and to study the histological tissue reactions and biodegradation of these sutures under the same conditions. Isokinetic calf muscle strength scores at the last control check-up were excellent in 56% of the patients in the early motion group, good in 32%, fair in 8%, and poor in 4%, whereas the scores in the cast group were excellent in 29% of cases, good in 50% and fair in 21%. The ankle performance scores were excellent or good in 88% of the patients in the early motion group, fair in 4% and poor in 8%, whereas the scores in the cast group were excellent or good in 92% of cases and fair in 8%. No significant differences were seen between the two groups at 3 months and at the last control checkups with regard to pain, stiffness, subjective calf muscle weakness, footwear restrictions, range of ankle motion, isokinetic calf muscle strength or overall outcome. The complications included 1 re-rupture in the early motion group and 1 deep infection and 2 re-ruptures in the cast group. AT elongation occurred in both groups, but was somewhat less marked in the early motion group. The AT elongation curves rose at first and then fell slowly in both groups. The patients who had less AT elongation achieved a better clinical outcome. AT elongation did not correlate significantly with age, body mass index or isokinetic peak torques. The recovery of motor performance functions such as simple reaction time, choice reaction time, speed of movement, foot tapping speed and coordination did not depend on the two postoperative regimens. The motor functions of the operated leg had obviously recovered to the level of the non-operated leg 12 weeks after the operation. Sutures made of PLDLA were used successfully for Achilles tendon repair in rabbits. There was no significant difference between the in vitro and in vivo tensile strength retention of the sutures. By comparison with Maxon®, PLDLA was found to have a lower initial tensile strength but more prolonged strength retention. The breaking strength values of the Achilles tendons repaired with sutures of these types were not significantly different at 6 weeks. Intratendinous PLDLA sutures formed a thinner fibrous capsule during the 12-week follow-up period than did Maxon® sutures of the same diameter. The suture materials had not been totally absorbed by 12 weeks.

L’examen de poétiques et de rhétoriques antiques et classiques, leur confrontation avec les théories contemporaines permettent de retracer la longue histoire d’un procédé à travers les discours contradictoires qui l’ont défini.Lisons les romans de l’Ancien Régime, nous verrons ce paradoxe en action. Au seuil du XVIIe siècle, la prolepse appartient, comme le début in medias res, à la panoplie des artifices visant à maintenir suspendu l’esprit du lecteur et à structurer de grandes machines romanesques ; au siècle suivant, les pseudo-mémorialistes, tout en puisant dans ce fonds, la posent comme le symptôme d’une écriture naturelle, désordonnée, parfois défaite, peu soucieuse de suspens et d’architecture, bref, la marque par excellence d’une écriture du cœur.Tout se joue dans l’appréhension progressive du texte par le lecteur et l’interprétation de la voix narratoriale supposée le guider. There is a paradox of prolepsis : because it tells in advance an event of the story, it runs the risk of ruining suspense ; because it only evokes this event allusively, it may, on the contrary, help to create suspense. The use of anticipation has always been at the core of the debate on narrative tension. Through the study of ancient and classical poetics and rhetorics, brought in comparison with contemporary theories, this work seeks to retrace the long history of a highly controversial narrative device.Reading the novels of the Ancien Régime, one may see this paradox at work. At the dawn of the seventeenth-century, prolepses belong, along with in medias res openings, to the repertoire of artificial contrivances used in the building of huge novelistic machines, as they keep the reader’s mind suspended ; in the first half of the following century, the Memoir-Novel uses the very same device to establish a new manner of writing : prolepses become the sign of an unsophisticated prose, attuned to the effusions of the heart.At stake here is the reader’s progressive apprehension of the text and the way he interprets the narratorial voice. Narratological tools are re-examined and refined so as to take into consideration the act of reading and its dynamics ; elements of enunciative linguistics are used for the study of small textual units and subtle narrative manipulations. Through this overview of one hundred and fifty years of prose fiction, we trace the different manners in which expectations are aroused, usually fulfilled, and exceptionally frustrated

This work is a contribution to the study of the high-speed bipolar transistor on silicon chip. First, it presents two original methods allowing to reduce the Base-Collector extrinsic Capacitance, to increase the Base-Collector breakdown voltage, to increase the Voltage Early VA, to increase the maximum power gain Gpmax and to increase the transition frequency FT. Then, it presents a new transistor, hybrid structure between the vertical NPN and the lateral NPN, named bipolar-CLEV (lateral collector-vertical emitter). This study can be generalized to other high speed transistor technologies such as III-V substrate transistors or heterojunction transistors

AbstractThere is always a tension between Public health and individual medical care. The former seeks, by one ethical optic, a fundamentally consequentialist goal: the greatest good for the greatest number of individuals. The latter has, at its moral base, an encounter between a medical provider and a patient, and its ethical goal is to optimize the outcome that the patient desires. While this dichotomy of intent and effort must be nuanced, setting it out in these terms helps us understand the tensions that we see between Public health initiatives and individual medical care. This chapter will suggest that by examining two movements that attempted to insert larger community concerns into the individual patient encounter, we might gain insight into what happens in the moral space of the patient encounter when the provider is compelled to consider these larger concerns. The Eugenics movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the population health movement of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries will be considered as two examples of attempts to alter the individual patient encounter through the lens of larger societal concerns.

AbstractDespite the increasing awareness of the outdoors as a beneficial site for young children’s education, the status of outdoor activities varies in and within different cultures. Aiming to broaden and challenge presupposed understandings of education and care in the outdoors, we consider the empirical findings from all the chapters in this volume in order to identify a range of conditions for cultural formation in outdoor practices both within and between different cultures. Building on Mariane Hedegaard’s approach to cultural historical theory and Ødegaard and Krüger’s approach to cultural formation, our analysis is performed by identifying conflicts and alignments between the values and motive orientations of the individual and those interpreted from the contextual conditions and demands of institutions and society, particularly in relation to the perception of nature. In doing so, we depict how culture and nature are interrelated from a socio-cultural perspective, and argue that perceptions of nature shaped by institutions and society play a significant role creating conditions for cultural formation. The opportunity for play, learning and cultural formation in nature appears rich within all the represented cultural spaces described in this volume, although whether these opportunities are supported consistently within wider mainstream culture is regarded as an area of tension in some chapters. Based upon our analysis, we suggest that both pedagogical practices and cultural historical theory need to take the outdoors and nature into consideration when emphasising pedagogical practices for children’s play, learning and cultural formation.

AbstractThis project was aimed at taking on the challenge of developing a didaktik for preschool, through empirical and theoretical work. The design was built on teachers’ own video observations of play activities in preschool, where they themselves were participants. Teachers, their principals, and researchers met regularly at the university to collaboratively discuss the video recordings. On these occasions the researchers also provided further education on theoretical concepts useful for analysing play activities in preschool, such as metacommunication and intersubjectivity. The outcome was the theorisation of Play-Responsive Early Childhood Education and Care (PRECEC), consisting of a coherent conceptualisation of teaching, as a responsive activity, and play, as something participants signal to each other through shifts between communicating and acting as is and as if. A challenge we discuss in this chapter is how to deal with the ‘unknown’ in a practice-based research project, i.e. not only reproducing knowledge (further education) but also, critically and at the same time, developing new knowledge (research).

Dry tree top-tensioned risers (TTRs) are widely used on floating production systems such as TLPs and Spars for drilling, completion, workover and production. The interference between neighboring TTRs is an important consideration which has a direct impact on the total TTR payload budget and the wellbay size for floater sizing and cost. Since the realistic sizing of a floater is essential towards the concept selection process for a field development, TTR interference should be addressed at the early stages of an offshore oilfield development. If the floater is a tension leg platform (TLP) and the field has strong current with associated extreme waves, riser interference may be very challenging and can have direct impact on riser design and the sizing and layout of the TLP. The waves and the oscillating motions of the TLP will have effects on riser interference. The oscillating motion of the TLP can excite the vibrational motion of the risers, and the wave-induced velocity of water particles and the motions of the risers with the movement of the TLP increases the relative flow acting on each riser. The combined effects will increase the deflection of the risers and thus the likelihood of riser interference. The industry has not seen an acceptable interference analysis approach yet which can account for the combined effects of current, waves, and TLP motions. This paper proposes two engineering approaches for the interference analysis of top tensioned risers for tension leg platforms with the combined effects of current, surface waves, and associated floater motions being addressed.

Abstract Elastic waves are generated and propagate when a material undergoes plastic deformation and can be detected by acoustic emission (AE). In this work, AE measurements are obtained during a uniaxial tension (UT) test using a custom-made sensor employing piezoelectric crystals. The UT tests are performed on an MTS machine with two AE sensors clamped on each end of the specimen gage section. A low pass Butterworth filter is designed to attenuate the high frequency noise from the AE signals. Also, full-field strain measurements on the specimen surface are acquired using the 2-D digital image correlation (DIC) method. A typical result from a UT test reveals, as the plastic deformation increases, the AE signals from each sensor increase until they reach a maximum value followed by a drop of signal until the specimen fractures. It is found through interrogation of the DIC images that the maximum amplitude from the AE signals corresponds to the early onset of localized necking. The goal of this work is to implement the UT findings in an actual forming process (e.g., cup drawing) and monitor the event in real time using closed loop control to achieve improved formability.

This contribution begins by presenting three cases of unfounded plagiarism complaints. They illustrate the aporias of a definition of plagiarism focused on the figure of the author and its two parameters: originality and ownership. Early modern period, contrary to what is often believed, was not unaware of the existence of plagiarism: but it dealt with it by confronting it with the primary idea of a common good from which everyone could draw. This impersonal and collective dimension of transmission would benefit from being clarified in order to enter practices in a more conscious and more controlled way than it is today. The task is all the more important since academic plagiarism has become an urgent problem without having gained any clarity.

As well known that material’s scratch behavior/resistance is considering as a kind of surface toughness parameter, which can affect product’s appearance quality and mechanical property reduction. Material’s surface scratch damage may also accelerate critical fracture existence in following mechanical test process. In this paper, dumbbell and plate samples of neat polycarbonate (PC) and 20wt% of glass fiber (GF) additive corresponding GF/PC composite were fabricated by injection molding technology. Basically, scratch damage performance was investigated by applying various scratch depths in dumbbell sample thickness direction following with tensile property change discussion. Initially, cross-section of scratch path in samples was observed to investigate various scratch parameters’ effect on scratch damage. Afterwards, dumbbell tension, plate’s drop weight impact test and bending test were conducted. Finally, dumbbell sample tension’s brittle fracture and plate’s impact damage tolerance were discussed based on tension strain, impact energy absorption and fractural appearance. The results indicates that material’s critical scratch depth could make sample’s tension fracture change from ductile to brittle, affecting material’s failure early-warming. Additionally, PC material with surface damage would decrease the energy absorption during plate bending process bearing smaller maximum load and deflection.

This paper presents a method for estimating the absolute lock effect in bolted joints during actual machine operation. The absolute evaluation on self-loosening is indispensable for the prediction of the life of locking devices (parts)/method at actual machine operation. The loosening phenomenon of bolted joint can be viewed as the decrease tendency of the initial axial tension or residual axial tension. According to the author’s previous report, there is a good linear relation on logarithmic coordinates (log-log paper) between the decrease of axial tension (measured tension/initial axial tension) and number of operations (or working time or mileage) since last tightening. Based on this relation, and observation of loosening in the early stages of product development, we estimate the rate of axial tension decrease (degree of self-loosening) accurately after prolonged operation since tightening by measuring the initial axial tension behavior by using the proposed regression formula. The trial calculation of the residual axial tension after prolonged operation is made using the industrial vehicle (stacking capacity 16-ton large-sized forklift-truck) at customer’s site by loosening measurement. According to the estimation using only a few day’s data, it is presumed that initial axial tension is kept 55% or more in case of anaerobic adhesive tightening and almost 30% in case of lubrication tightening after ten years. In the working load type loosening, authors propose the L-N diagram (Loosening Life - Numbers of Cycles to Loosening N Diagram) for loosening life estimation like the S-N diagram for fatigue life estimation. Using the loosening frequency diagram and L-N diagram, the degree of loosening damage for every axial tension’s residual ratio is figured out to analyze the loosening life of the locking device/method by Miner’s rule and cumulative loosening damage models.

The early years of a teacher’s career are crucial to the formation of their professional identity—a complex process of reconciling their personal attributes with the demands of the profession. This study explores the identity formation of novice teachers in Indonesia and seeks to identify the various aspects that shape this process. Specifically, we examine how Indonesia’s current teacher policy landscape affects novice teachers’ perspectives on teaching and their profession. Through a longitudinal bimonthly diary study conducted over two years, we find that the novice teachers’ stories about their identity development revolve around five themes: initial motivation to enter the profession, beliefs about teaching and the teaching profession, satisfaction with working conditions, perceptions about major challenges during the early years, and commitment to the teaching profession and career aspiration. Our findings show that individual teachers’ personal attributes do influence the formation of their identities as teachers, but teacher policies and working conditions influence this process to a greater extent. Without support, novice teachers struggle to navigate the tension between their ideals, limited resources, and inconsistent teacher policies. These findings suggest it is necessary to redefine what it means to be a teacher by characterising the observable qualities of good teaching, linking them to student learning, and rectifying teacher policies in the Indonesian education system to be coherent with these characteristics.

In early 2020, once the severity was recognized on a global scale, the COVID-19 pandemic quickly became the most immediately pressing crisis. In addition to the general demands the pandemic created for strong and competent national and international response, it also raised numerous issues and generated tensions around the sharing of responsibilities and resources among levels of governments in many countries around the world. A number of comparable health and economic issues have emerged fairly universally, but they have manifested in different ways and the responses and results have been diverse across and within countries. This monograph summarizes available information about how the pandemic has affected fiscal decentralization around the world, focusing on five Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. It briefly characterizes the intergovernmental fiscal systems in these countries, provides an overview of the known impacts of the pandemic and summarizes available information on government responses to the pandemic, both national and those undertaken by subnational governments with national support or more independently. The conclusions draw lessons from regional and global experiences about if and how post-pandemic policies might be developed to improve the intergovernmental fiscal system in particular countries.

Large-scale (7 ft × 10 ft) experimental bridge prototypes with similar restraint conditions found in actual bridges were poured with different concrete mixtures to investigate mitigation techniques. Portland cement (control), expansive Type K cement, internally cured lightweight aggregate (LWA), shrinkage-reducing admixture (SRA), and gypsum mineral were investigated as mitigating ingredients. Seven concrete mixtures were prepared by using individual ingredients as well as a combination of different ingredients. The idea behind combining different mitigating techniques was to accumulate the combined benefit from individual mitigating materials. The combined Type K cement and LWA mixture showed higher concrete expansion compared with mixtures containing Portland cement, Type K cement, LWA, and SRA in the large-scale experimental deck. Extra water provided by LWA significantly enhanced the performance of Type K cement’s initial expansion as well as caused larger total shrinkage over the drying period. A combination of Type K cement and gypsum mineral showed insignificantly higher expansion compared with the individual Type K mixture. Overall, the experimental deck containing SRA showed the least total shrinkage compared with other mixtures. Finite-element modeling was performed to evaluate and predict concrete stress-strain behavior due to shrinkage in typical bridges. A parametric study using finite-element analysis was conducted by altering the structure of the experimental deck. More restraint from internal reinforcement, less girder spacing, larger girder flange width, and more restrictive support conditions increased the concrete tensile stress and led to potential cracking in the concrete deck.

Once the global leader in telecommunication systems and the Internet, over the past two decades the United States has fallen behind global competitors, and in particular China, in mobile communication infrastructure—specifically 5G and Internet of Things (IoT). This national failure, with the socioeconomic and geopolitical tensions that it creates, is not due to a lack of US government investment in the knowledge required for the mobility revolution. Nor is it because of a dearth of domestic demand for the equipment, devices, and applications that can make use of this infrastructure. Rather, the problem is the dereliction of key US-based business corporations to take the lead in making the investments in organizational learning required to generate cutting edge communication-infrastructure products. No company in the United States exemplifies this deficiency more than Cisco Systems, the business corporation founded in Silicon Valley in 1984 that had explosive growth in the 1990s to become the foremost global enterprise-networking equipment producer in the Internet revolution. This paper provides in-depth analysis of Cisco’s organizational failure, attributing it ultimately to the company’s turn from innovation in the last decades of 20th century to financialization in the early decades of the 21st century. Since 2001, Cisco’s top management has chosen to allocate corporate cash to open-market share repurchases— aka stock buybacks—for the purpose of giving manipulative boosts to the company stock price rather than make the investments in organizational learning required to become a world leader in communication-infrastructure equipment for the era of 5G and IoT. From October 2001 through October 2022, Cisco spent $152.3 billion—95 percent of its net income over the period—on stock buybacks for the purpose of propping up its stock price. These funds wasted in pursuit of “maximizing shareholder value” were on top of the $55.5 billion that Cisco paid out to shareholders in dividends, representing an additional 35 percent of net income. In this paper, we trace how Cisco grew from a Silicon Valley startup in 1984 to become, through its innovative products, the world leader in enterprise-networking equipment over the next decade and a half. As the company entered the 21st century, building on its dominance of enterprise-networking, Cisco was positioned to upgrade its technological capabilities to become a major infrastructureequipment vendor to service providers. We analyze how and why, when the Internet boom turned to bust in 2001, the organizational structure that enabled Cisco to dominate enterprise networking posed constraints related to manufacturing and marketing on the company’s growth in the more sophisticated infrastructure-equipment segment. We then document how from 2002 Cisco turned from innovation to financialization, as it used its ample profits to do stock buybacks to prop up its stock price. Finally, we ponder the larger policy implications of Cisco’s turn from innovation to financialization for the competitive position of the US information-and-communication technology (ICT) industry in the global economy.

The key to the high-efficiency performance of the suspen-dome structure is to apply the pre-stressed design value to the structure accurately. However, engineering practice has found that the use of tensioning hoop cables to apply the pre-stress will produce noticeable pre-stressed friction loss (PFL), which significantly affects the safety performance of the structure. In this paper, based on a 1:10 scaled-down experiment model of a suspen-dome structure with rolling cable-strut joint installed, the random PFL (RPFL) effect of the suspen-dome on structure performance was analyzed through a probability statistics theory. First, aiming at the unequal tensioning force at both sides of the tensioned hoop cable during the tensioning process, a pre-stressed force calculation method is proposed that considers the unequal tensioning control force and RPFL at all cable–strut joints, and the reliability of this method is verified through a tension test. Then, based on the cable-joint tension test carried out in the early stage of the research group, a random mathematical model of the friction coefficient (FC) at the rolling cable–strut joint is established. And then, the cable force calculation method is used to establish the random finite element model, and independent and random changes in the FC at each rolling cable–strut joint can be considered. Subsequently, the Monte Carlo method is used to calculate the random mathematical characteristics of the mechanical performance parameters such as the member stress and joint deformation, and the obtained results are verified through a static loading experiment. In addition, to investigate the effect of random defects on structural stability, other random defects, such as the initial curvature and installation deviation, were continuously introduce based on the random finite element model. As such, we could obtain the law of the effect of multi-defect random variation coupling on the structure’s ultimate bearing capacity.
