A research and development program is underway to produce an innovative design support system for crew station designers. Known as the Performance Visualization Subsystem of the Computer Aided Systems Human Engineering Program (CASHE: PVS), this design tool will have data visualization and prototyping capabilities that will enable designers to “go beyond” the human perception and performance information available in the PVS database. Interactive software modules (called test benches) are being developed to allow designers to explore behavioral phenomena under different stimulus and response conditions. The objective of this paper is to describe a method we have used to translate the information in the PVS database into test bench specifications for software development. The basic approach in test bench design is: 1) to rely on standardized tasks and conditions where possible and 2) to provide designers with pedagogical illustrations of perceptual and performance effects. The procedures used in developing test bench specifications included identifying good candidates for test bench simulations, prioritizing the set of proposed test benches according to selection criteria developed by the design team, and recruiting subject matter experts to generate test bench specifications that will be used by the software engineers to implement the test bench code. The result of this effort will be a commercially available software product that will help crew station designers more effectively understand and apply human factors principles in the design process.

This article zooms in on the daily practices of newspaper production journalists. In three semi-structured interviews with sub-editors employed by a Belgian newspaper, I test the practical application of the ‘production values’ I formulated, that is, guidelines that help them ensure accuracy, readability, appeal and credibility of their newspaper. By not only ‘member checking’ previous findings with sub-editors but also including the layout designers’ input on their collaborative process, I re(de)fine my original set of production values. My data suggest that in this particular newsroom the layout designer’s voice can be heard louder than ever. By ‘designing’ the news, sub-editors and layout designers add all-important journalistic value to their publications.

In recent years, a number of new speech and language tests for children have appeared. Of interest is whether these new tests help to define language disorders in such a way as to identify children with problems, delineate their problems, and provide useful intervention strategies. The focus of this paper is the Test of Problem Solving (1984). The designers claim that their "cognition-language" test assesses integration of semantic, linguistic and reasoning ability and taps skills needed for academic success and social acceptance. The content validity of the test is challenged through a replication experiment.

AbstractCommercially available metal Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) systems are steadily evolving. Thus, design limitations narrow and the diversity of achievable geometries widens. This progress leads researchers to create innovative benchmarks to understand the new system capabilities. Thereby, designers can update their knowledge base in design for additive manufacturing (DfAM). To date, there are plenty of geometrical benchmarks that seek to develop generic test artefacts. Still, they are often complex to measure, and the information they deliver may not be relevant to some designers. This article proposes a geometrical benchmarking approach for metal L-PBF systems based on the designer needs. Furthermore, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) characteristics enhance the approach. A practical use-case is presented, consisting of developing, manufacturing, and measuring a meaningful and straightforward geometric test artefact. Moreover, optical measuring systems are used to create a tailored uncertainty map for benchmarking two different L-PBF systems.

During the conceptual design stages, designers often have incomplete knowledge about the interactions among design parameters. We are developing a methodology that will enable designers to create models with levels of detail and accuracy that correspond to the current state of the design process. Thus, designers can create a rough surrogate model when only a few data points are available and then refine the model as the design progresses and more information becomes available. These surrogates represent the system response when limited information is available and when few realizations of experiments or numerical simulations are possible. This paper presents a covariance-based approach for building multistage surrogates in the conceptual design stages when bounds for the response are not available a priori. We test the methodology using a one-dimensional analytical function and a heat transfer problem with an analytical solution, in order to obtain error measurements. We then illustrate the use of the methodology in a thermal design problem for wearable computers. The surrogate model enables the designer to understand the relationships among the design parameters.

Creativity is important and constitutes a part of competitiveness in all walks of life. In the case of designers’ visual images, creativity is vital. Based on the perspective of visual design, visual image thinking has always been a widely used thinking mode in the field of design. Regarding whether or not other sensory stimuli can also provide a source of inspiration for designers, many studies have pointed out that different sources of inspiration can create different thinking patterns and even affect the behavior of a designer. Therefore, this study explores whether or not different sensory stimuli have an impact on the thinking of a designer, which in turn allows the designer to spark different inspirations. Here, we explore the relationships between creativity and vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. In this study, novice designers are required to use their creativity to design their works. Through the execution of design tasks, works are produced in two stages. First of all, a scenic spot is decided as the main theme, while the data of the field are collected through observation and experience. Next, the five senses are used to feel the stimulation delivered by the field when located in the field. Last but not least, the five stimuli are transformed into abstract visual pictures. Different sensory stimuli do affect the thinking of a designer and inspire different types of works. A multiple-attribute decision-making (MADM) forecasting method is also used to establish a method for evaluating creative designs. By making a comparison between the students and the experts, the results of the creative thinking test show that different sensory stimuli do affect the thinking of a designer and inspire different types of works.

Considering the scattering difference in resistance of the strain gauge which will cause the bridge unbalance, the designers of strain measurement instrument have to add bridge-balance circuit into the design of measuring bridge in order to eliminate the problem of a DC component output caused by the unbalance. Thus, in the design of the bridge-balance circuit, the selection of balance resistances is of great significance. In this paper, through calculation analysis of the balance bridge, we obtained a couple of ideal values of balance resistances and tested them by experiments. In this condition, the experimental results have shown that the circuit has a great ability of regulation equilibrium. In brief, this paper provides the designers an effective method of choosing the balance resistances.

Technological advances, including the use of possibilities offered by artificial intelligence (AI), have become an area of strategic importance and a key driver of economic development. AI today has been integrated into a variety of economies, the design industry is no exception: AI is being increasingly applied in the development of design products and services. However, as technological breakthroughs rapidly shift the borders between the work tasks performed by humans and those performed by machines and algorithms, global labor markets are undergoing major transformations. This raises the question: how are these changes affecting and will continue to affect designers’ work in the future? What skill sets will be needed for designers to begin or continue working in the industry? The article aims to perform a meta-analysis, summarizing the research on the impact of AI on the designer’s professional activity and test the capabilities and results of AI-based design solutions. Research methods – theoretical – research and analysis of literature and Internet resources; empirical – case study to analyze possibilities and results of AI-based design solutions.

The purpose of this paper is to offer a practical demonstration of how essential preoptimization is in the design of underplatform dampers for turbine blades. Preoptimization can be thought of as a “prescreening” which allows excluding, since the early design stages, a high number of poorly performing damper–platform configurations. This concept, previously presented by the authors, is here extended and its generality for all blade bending modes is rigorously demonstrated. The paper addresses a test case where the introduction of curved-flat underplatform dampers is necessary to avoid a dangerous resonance crossing in the operating rotational speed range of a real turbine disk. It is shown how preoptimized dampers are the only ones that manage to satisfy all functional requirements, including those in the nonlinear operating regime. The same set of dampers may have been identified by exploring, through hundreds of computationally intensive nonlinear calculations, the performance of all possible damper configurations. The latter approach, i.e. iterative design, is unpractical and has to be repeated for each new set of blades since it is based on a test case-specific trial-and-error procedure. Preoptimization substitutes iterations with knowledge of the damper behavior and can therefore be considered as “informed design”: viable damper configurations are instantly singled out through simple but insightful considerations on the damper equilibrium of forces and moments.

AbstractTo design interactive behaviours for their products designers/makers have to use high fidelity tools like ‘electronic prototyping kits’, involving sensors and programming to incorporate interactions in their products and are dependent on availability of hardware. Not every designer is comfortable using such tools to ideate and test their concept ideas, eventually slowing them down in the process. Thus, there is a need for a design tool that reduces dependence on complex components of such tools while exploring new concepts for product design at an early stage. In this work, we propose a Mixed Reality system that we developed to simulate interactive behaviours of products using designed visual interaction blocks. The system is implemented in three stages: idea generation, creating interactions and revision of interactive behaviours. The implemented virtual scenario showed to elicit high motivation and appeal among users resulting in inventive and creative design experience at the same time. As a result, designers will be able to create and revise their interaction-behavioural design concepts virtually with relative ease, resulting in higher concept generation and their validation.

The development of robot technology provides many possibilities for the life support of the elderly. This study explored the acceptability of robots to assist the elderly from the perspective of future designers. A quantitative questionnaire (58 copies) and a qualitative one-to-one interview (10 people) were conducted to explore the attitude of future designers towards the use of robots to assist the elderly. One-sample Wilcoxon signed-rank test statistic was used to analyze the data of the questionnaire. The results show that the mean and median of 11 of the 12 dimensions of the acceptability questionnaire are greater than 3 (3 represents uncertain and neutral attitude), and 10 have statistical significance (p < 0.05). Also, the interview results show the positive attitude of future designers. The research shows that future designers hold a positive and open attitude towards the use of robots to assist the elderly. The research findings can help people understand the attitude of future designers and provide some reference for subsequent robot design and development.

There are many existing architectural structures that need reinforcement because of low construction quality, absurd design, inappropriate use, accidental natural disaster and building function change etc. Since there are several possible reinforcement schemes available to one structure, choosing the optimal scheme becomes a crucial problem that a designer must face. The optimization of reinforcement schemes needs considering not only quantitative factors like construction cost and period, but also qualitative index, which is difficult to quantize, such as durability and construction difficulty degree. Therefore, scheme selection is a representative multi-index semi-structural problem. This poses considerable difficulty to designers and is complicated to regulate because of the subjective randomness. In this paper, fuzzy multi-index half-structural theory is applied to the selection of building reinforcement schemes. By determining relative membership degree matrix and objective weight matrix of each index, superior degree of each scheme to decision is decided; objective index and designers’ experience are combined effectively, and then optimal reinforcement scheme can be obtained. The results reveal that the calculate results are well consistent with those of test, and have great computational accuracy.

The widespread use of building integrated photovoltaics appears likely as a result of the continuing decline in photovoltaic manufacturing costs, the relative ease in which photovoltaics can be incorporated within the building envelope, and the fact that buildings account for over 40% of the U.S. energy consumption. However, designers, architects, installers, and consumers need more information and analysis tools in order to judge the merits of building-integrated solar photovoltaic products. In an effort to add to the knowledge base, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has undertaken a multiple-year project to collect high quality experimental performance data. The data will be used to validate computer models for building integrated photovoltaics and, where necessary, to develop algorithms that may be incorporated within these models. This paper describes the facilities that have been constructed to assist in this effort. The facilities include a mobile tracking photovoltaic test facility, a building integrated photovoltaic test bed, an outdoor aging rack, and a meteorological station.

Consumer product design is seldom approached in a truly systematic framework, especially in applied settings. Although most designers know about systems design techniques, real design projects usually appear to be driven by severe scheduling constraints, cost limitations, strongly held opinions on the part of management and designers, or all of these characteristics. There has also historically been friction between human factors professionals and industrial designers. The result is that most consumer products have not undergone a truly systematic process of design and testing. This paper describes a case study in which a real product with potentially significant financial impact has been designed and is being tested using a systematic process. More significantly, this product represents a collaboration among company management, human factors professionals, and industrial designers. The overall design and testing process is described. Results from several tests, successively increasing the fidelity of the test items, are presented

Genetically modified organism (GMO) crops provide new trait(s) that may benefit floral designers and consumers. A limited array of GMO cut flower cultivars exist in the floral markets worldwide: nine carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus) and one rose (Rosa ×hybrida). Labeling GMO flowers in the United States is not required. Thus, most distributors, flower auctions, brokers, wholesalers, floral designers and consumers are not aware that they exist. To test the acceptance of GMO cut flowers with potential future floral designers, n = 121 students enrolled in Floral Design (HORT 1013) at the University of Minnesota during 2005–07, 2009, and 2011, designed with standard and miniature GMO Moon™ series carnations. Each student created a Hogarth design with both types of carnations and assembled a price sheet. Students examined the differences between GMO lavender/purple carnations and those created with classic methods of spraying, dipping, or infusion. In 2009 only, students were also assigned to write a marketing paragraph about their GMO floral design. Each year, students were given an identical question on a subsequent midterm examination to determine their position on GMO cut flowers, including development of a floral shop policy to inform customers. Student examination responses ranged from not carrying GMO products [1/121 (0.8% response)], offering GMO/non-GMO carnation options to the consumer [81/121 (66.9% response)], or only selling only GMOs [33/121 (27.3% response)] that differed significantly from a 1:1:1 chi-square (χ2). A significant majority of students would inform their customers of the GMO crops [89/121 (73.6% response)]. In several instances, consumers were not to be informed of the GMO nature unless they queried about the higher price point. Similarly, marketing paragraphs did not uniformly highlight the GMO nature of the flowers. Implications for the next generation of floral designers demonstrate that, with the exception of students in 2005–06, most would sell both GMO and non-GMO flowers with a majority of shops clearly identifying GMOs.

This paper presents a method of ergonomic design based on subjective rating for the purpose of modeling cushion surface mapped by body pressure distribution (BPD) test data. A sitting comfort evaluation scale was designed to collect subjective comfort perception. Optimal BPD test data were selected by comparing comfort rating after experiments on a trial seat. A data mapping model was established between point clouds in three dimensional coordinate and BPD test data, which can be recognized and transferred in CAD system. In this context, an ergonomic-aided system was developed in practical application to demonstrate the viability of the method. Two designers tried out the system to design a seat cushion, and compared it with conventional method in Rhino software. Results show that the system is more interactive to designers, which can save time of surface modeling by about 50%.

Research has shown that up to half of construction accidents in the UK had a link with design. The UK’s Construction, Design and Management Regulations, (CDM, 2015) place duties on designers of construction projects to consider the health and safety implications of their designs. However, the majority of designers fail to recognise the impact on health and safety that they can make. Previous work shows that visual methods have been used to develop shared mental models of construction safety and health hazards in construction and design teams. Potentially, these methods could also include links to alternative construction processes that may be utilized by designers to reduce the inherent hazards in the design, thereby enhancing their knowledge of construction and maintenance processes from the very people who are affected by the designs. The study reported in this paper aims to improve how designers involved in construction projects learn about how their design influences the management of occupational health and safety at the construction stage. The proposed approach involves the development of a multi-media digital tool for educating and assisting designers on typical design-related hazards. This prototype tool was used in an intervention study with novice and experienced designers, split evenly between experimental and control groups. These groups were assessed via a novel hazard test using fictitious Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings. The results showed all experimental groups outperformed control groups, with the novice groups demonstrating the greatest increase in both hazards spotted and quality of alternative options recommended. Current research in this area promotes automated design systems for designers using Building Information Modelling (BIM). However, the research presented here advocates keeping the ‘human’ in control while supplementing designers’ knowledge with tacit knowledge gained from interaction from the developed digital tool, so that they can make informed design decisions potentially leading to safer designs.

This article reports on the researcher's use of video for listening comprehension in material design and test construction and discusses a survey questionnaire that solicited test-takers' views about video-mediated listening assessment in a tertiary institution in Tokyo. The results of the survey were to be used to justify (or not) the inclusion of video as a mode of presentation for listening assessment and to inform test designers of issues to consider for improving future video test design. It was found that the learners liked video in listening comprehension tests and preferred video tests over audio cassette tests. The findings will lead to further consideration and research in video-mediated assessment instruments.

Because icons vary from very representational to extremely abstract symbols in a user interface, an important issue faced by designers when designing an icon is how to select an appropriate design style for the image. There are no simple rules that can be followed by designers to determine the design style. The present study is intended to help designers to choose a proper design style for the icon at an early design stage. First, a classification of icons is summarized and the levels of stylization are discussed and demonstrated with examples. Then, thirty icons from several drawing packages and generally used symbols are selected, and a matching test is conducted to obtain the correct matching rates. The results are presented with some explanations for icon recognition and confusion, and finally how to select the right image function for icon design is discussed.

Purpose The aim of this study is to focus on the perspectives of facility managers in each region and the different challenges impacting collaboration in each geographical context. This research analyzed obstacles to collaboration between facility managers and architectural designers in three international regions. Design/methodology/approach A multi-method approach was used, allowing the researchers to triangulate data from in-depth interviews and a widely distributed survey instrument. The participants included a large cross-selection of facility management professionals in each of the regions under study. The interview data were parsed to identify recurring themes, while the survey data were analyzed statistically to test specific hypotheses. Findings Significant differences were found in the culture of the facility management profession in each region. These differences created unique challenges for collaboration, especially in the context of a non-local design team. While the facility management profession was perceived as most established and professional in the UK, rates of collaboration between facility managers and designers were actually much higher in the USA. Collaborations between facility managers and designers were almost non-existent in the Middle East. Originality/value While the importance of collaboration between facility managers and designers is increasingly recognized for improving the efficiency of building operations, crucial obstacles continue to limit the scope of this engagement. There has been limited previous research analyzing obstacles to collaboration that are specific to international contexts and non-local design teams. This study helps to fill an important gap in the literature by providing a comparative analysis of collaboration challenges in three international contexts.

Design patent is deemed as a superb competitive tool in the design industry. The author of this study delineates a co-opetition type of relationship of design patent with patent, trademark, and copyright to assist designers to construct a correct core concept of design patent quickly. The investigator proposed five key judgment factors based on infringement identification, and they are (1) literal infringement, (2) doctrine of equivalence, (3) points of novelty test, (4) prosecution history estoppel, and (5) prior art limitation. They can help designers clearly identify the legal right and scope of their design. Lastly, the author proposed three new competitive tools for a design patent, and they are (1) partial design patent, (2) computer-generated icons and graphic user interface, and (3) derivative design patent. Using these three new design patent tools will enable designers to effectively expand their design patent rights and maximize design benefits for their companies.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to consider design engineers’ perception of health and safety and its impact on their behaviour during design activity. The study presents three types of design engineers each, exhibiting particular tendencies when faced with health and safety considerations during design. The discovery of these tendencies pose important implications for education and professional institutions and practical measures are suggested to help design engineers manage their tendencies to be more conducive to ensuring improved health and safety performance. Design/methodology/approach – An exploratory design method was used – grounded theory, to include 13, in-depth, one-to-one interviews with design engineers, representing junior staff, middle and senior management. Findings – The paper provides empirical insights about how designers think and behave when asked to consider health and safety issues during the design process. It identifies three group types of designers: doers, receivers and givers, who will exhibit their particular tendencies based on how they view and understand the term health and safety. Research limitations/implications – The data obtained were from design engineers only, and therefore the research results may lack generalisability. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the proposed propositions. Practical implications – The paper includes implications for those involved in the creation and development of designers e.g., educators and professional bodies. The data forms the basis for helping designers to manage their perceptions towards the term health and safety and thus, their tendencies exhibited in their behaviour. Originality/value – This paper contributes to new understanding of designers’ behaviour and considers the significance of how designers’ views of health and safety will influence their behaviour.

Introduction. This study examines the problem of professional adaptation of freelance designers, which is of particular relevance due to the insufficient coverage of this issue, the annual increase in the number of freelancers in the design environment, the specifics of professional adaptation of freelancers engaged in interior design, and the lack of specially developed programs for psychological counseling of freelance designers with different levels of professional adaptation. This work aims to study the professional adaptation of freelance designers and to build and test a psychological counseling program for freelance designers with various levels of professional adaptation. Methods and materials. The study involved several groups of participants. For each group, an individual psychological counseling program was developed and implemented. The program contains modeling, developing, training, and analytical methods. The paper presents the program implementation results, which show the change in the indicators of professional adaptation of freelance designers with different levels of professional adaptation. Results. Analysis performed in this study has confirmed the assumption that professional adaptation of the freelancers at issue has various levels (high, medium, and low). In this work, each level is assigned a certain characteristic with corresponding indicators. Conclusion. The findings of the study indicate that traditional methods cannot affect the professional adaptation of freelancers. In this regard, psychological counseling is one of the most effective approaches. Keywords: professional disadaptation, job satisfaction, professional stress, psychological counseling program, adaptability of freelancers.

With the great development of commodity economy, the packaging of goods has become an extremely important factor to get the advantages in the market competition. As to paper packaging, people are taking more and more attention on the design of Special-shaped Cartons.Limited by the three-dimensional way of paper, the carton CAD/CAM systems generally use the design process of "carton shape chose from the carton library →parameters set and modified →the 3D model established following the existing way", development for new carton shapes are still depended on the folding-test by the designer's hand. Design of the Carton Planar Structure usually has a time distance with Design of the Carton 3D Model, as a results, inconvenience to Special-shaped Carton designing was caused, and designers can not express their design ideas quickly and effectively.

The set up of practical methods for evaluation of web site aesthetics from the user perspective and the provision of useful feedback to designers is an open issue in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The paper presents an evaluation study of aesthetic attributes of two web sites from the user perspective and compares the results to the design team. The study initially involved the formulation of a set of aesthetic attributes and their appreciation by a user group of 111 users for two web sites, following a traditional user testing approach. The user evaluation was then compared to the design team’s appreciation of these aesthetic attributes for their own designs. The main results of this test was that: (a) the two groups have a similar view about the presence of a considerable number of the selected aesthetic attributes; (b) users have rated most aesthetic attributes significantly lower than designers; (c) different aesthetic attributes become important for different objects of study for both groups. The design team found the evaluation informative and inspiring; however they identified the need for further explanation of user responses in terms of suggested design patterns and examples. Also, a number of recommendations towards an evaluation method of aesthetics in HCI are identified and discussed

This article presents a project-based research study using a new hybrid augmented reality platform called the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface. Using the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface as a mixture of different software and hardware platforms, ranging from design/modeling software, simulation engine, and an augmented reality application, the designer would be able to evaluate the possibilities/limitations of the fabrication, in real time and as part of the design. This method advances designer’s understanding of the fabrication equipment as an input for the design decision-making process. This article demonstrates the potential of a virtual/actual hybridized platform as a new medium to design, simulate, and evaluate, in order to enhance the digital design and fabrication. Introducing the possibility of real-time communication between the digital design software and the fabrication platforms as well as the augmented reality simulation of the fabrication process, the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface enables designers to test the fabrication process with the fabrication equipment in the early stages of the design process. This method makes it possible to move beyond the traditional limitations of machines pursuing “un-expected creativity,” without any additional time or cost for the process. Using the virtual material for fabrication, the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface reduces the time and cost of having multiple iterations and encourages the hands-on experimental use of the fabrication tool (in this article robotic/computer numeric control milling) not only as a production tool but also as a design study tool.

Purpose The prevention through design (PtD) concept has been widely recognized as one of the most effective approaches to eliminate or reduce construction site hazards. It encourages engineers and architects to consider occupational safety and health during the planning and design phases. Nevertheless, the implementation of PtD is often inhibited because designers lack adequate knowledge about construction safety and the construction process, and limited design-for-safety tools and procedures are available for designers to use. The purpose of this paper is to provide designers a tool for assessing construction risks during early phases of multistory building projects at an activity level and on a daily basis in a 4D environment. By using the tool, proactive measures could be taken in the design and planning phase to reduce site hazards. Design/methodology/approach The proposed method consists of four steps including risk quantification at a design element level, 4D model integration with risk values, risk assessment, and design alternative selection and model acceptance. A case study was carried out to test and verify the proposed method. Findings The proposed tool has the capability to assess the safety risk for an entire multistory project and visualize safety risk in a particular time period, work space and task prior to construction. It benefits designers in conducting risk assessments and selecting design alternatives concerning safety. Contractors could also utilize the visualization and simulation results of the 4D model for site safety planning so that a range of risk mitigation strategies could be implemented during construction. Originality/value The study provides an innovative PtD tool targeting designers as primary end-users. The proposed tool helps designers assess construction risks and has potential to incorporate the top levels of the hierarchy of risk controls.

AbstractIn mass customization, software configurators enable novice end-users to design customized products and services according to their needs and preferences. However, traditional configurators hardly provide an engaging experience while avoiding the burden of choice. We propose a Design Participation Model to facilitate navigating the design space, based on two modules. Modeler enables designers to create customizable designs as parametric models, and Navigator subsequently permits novice end-users to explore these designs. While most parametric designs support direct manipulation of low-level features, we propose interpolation features to give customers more flexibility. In this paper, we focus on the implementation of such interpolation features into Navigator and its user interface. To assess our approach, we designed and performed user experiments to test and compare Modeler and Navigator, thus providing insights for further developments of our approach. Our results suggest that barycentric interpolation between qualitative parameters provides a more easily understandable interface that empowers novice customers to explore the design space expeditiously.

Stability of electrical amplifiers is of crucial importance. Among the popular stability tests is the μ-test which has many advantages over other tests like the K-Δ test. However, the value of μ parameter is dependent on the input/output terminal characteristic impedance used and this raises the concern that the predictions of the test are dependent on the choice of . This paper proves that the conclusions of the μ-test regarding stability/instability remain invariant with . This proof is necessary for gaining confidence in the results of the μ-test and should benefit circuit designers. Similar proofs should be extended to all other stability tests for additional insights into their validity under different circuit termination.

The paper describes the work towards a set of standardised tests for the evaluation of the performance of optical systems for measuring strain. In particular, the standardised tests are designed to allow the components of a system to be evaluated both in terms of hardware and software. The intention is to allow designers of optical systems to assess the efficacy of their innovations in instrumentation and algorithms, to assist manufacturers of systems in the quality assurance process, to permit end-users to evaluate system capabilities prior to purchase, and to support both manufacturers and end-users in setting up and fault diagnosis. Two standardised tests are proposed and described of which one is physical, a disc in contact with a half-space, and the other is virtual, a pair of shrinkage-fit thick rings or cylinders.

Abstract π-Cipher, designed by Gligoroski et al., is a second round candidate of the CAESAR competition. The designers analyzed the bit diffusion of the cipher by examining the * operation and 1 round π-function. We improve this analysis by applying Strict Avalanche Criterion (SAC) test to * operation and reduced round versions of π-function for π 16-Cipher. We found out that * operation fails SAC test whereas all versions of π-function for π 16-Cipher pass the test.

AbstractThis paper relates key concepts of strategic cognition in microstrategy to design practice. It considers the potential roles of designers' output in strategic sensemaking and sensegiving. Designed artifacts play well-known roles as communication media; sketches, renderings, models, and prototypes are created to explore and test possibilities and to communicate these options within and outside the design team. This article draws on design and strategy literature to propose that designed artifacts can and do play a role as symbolic communication resources in sensemaking and sensegiving activities that impact strategic decision making and change. Extracts from interviews with three designers serve as illustrative examples. This article is a call for further empirical exploration of such a complex subject.

This paper presents the results of research attempts to substantiate repeatability and uniqueness claims of a functional model derivation method following a hypothesis generation and testing procedure outlined in design research literature. Three experiments are constructed and carried out with a participant pool that possesses a range of engineering design skill levels. The experiments test the utility of a functional model derivation method to produce repeatable functional models for a given product among different designers. In addition to this, uniqueness of the functional models produced by the participants is examined. Results indicate the method enhances repeatability and leads designers toward a unique functional model of a product. Shortcomings of the method and opportunities for improvement are also identified.

This paper describes the process involved in the development of a reaction time test bench for the Computer Aided Systems Human Engineering (CASHE) program, which is based on a strategy for converting human factors information into simulation software, using a test bench metaphor. The metaphor takes its strength from the familiarity systems designers have with test benches and breadboarding facilities currently at their disposal. The purpose of this paper is to provide a description of this software development activity, illustrate the procedure we followed, specify the decision points we encountered, and relate our lessons learned. Our goal was to convey functional specification information to the software developers in a parsimonious, unambiguous, structured manner to facilitate the development of both the software and the user interface, while complying with hardware system constraints. Development of the Reaction Time (RT) Test Benches involved the following tasks: collect and digest the Engineering Data Compendium entries; analyze the variables; determine the scope of the relevant variables to be tested; select the test bench phenomena to be demonstrated; and develop each of the deliverables. These deliverables included the variable range tables, initial variable settings, the control flow and storyboard graphics. We believe that this task is typical of the input human factors specialists can provide to designers in a variety of contexts and hence generalizes beyond this specific application.

AbstractProduct/service systems (PSSs) are increasingly found in markets, and more resources are being invested in PSS design. Despite the substantial research into PSS design, the current literature exhibits an incomplete understanding of it as a cognitive activity. This article demonstrates that the methods used to analyze product designers’ cognitive behavior can be used to produce comparable and commensurable results when analyzing PSS designers. It also generates empirical grounding for the development of hypotheses based on a cognitive study of a PSS design session in a laboratory environment using protocol analysis. This study is a part of a larger project comparing PSS design with product design. The results, which are based on the function–behavior–structure coding scheme, show that PSS design, when coded using this scheme, can be quantitatively compared with product design. Five hypotheses were developed based on the results of the study of this design session concerning where and how designers expend their cognitive design effort. These hypotheses can be used to design experiments that test them and provide the grounding for a fuller understanding of PSS design.

In order to know the pattern of actual application of human factors criteria by industrial designers an experiment was conducted by asking 87 students of industrial design to evaluate a CAD workstation after completing a course in “human factors in design”. The guidelines chosen for the evaluation were those related to design of visual displays, controls and workstation layout on the CAD system. Since the main objective was to see how many of the principles had become part of their “common sense” they were asked to evaluate the equipment without any reference to any books/notes. The subject's responses were compared with the human factors guidelines using a Chi-square test (0.05 significance). The results pointed out that industrial designers readily accepted general criteria such as visibility, operability, and accessibility but interpretability of the display was frequently unrecognized. Such information could be used by industrial designers and human factors experts to improve their cooperation in the design process and thus increase the acceptance and marketability of the product.

Green open space has many benefits for humans. Unfortunately, the function of green open space cannot be fully felt due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Even though the application of physical distancing in the garden can be created through the use of garden border elements. As a first step in determining good and effective elements, this study aims to explore the preferences of garden designers in selecting garden border elements, their shapes, and arrangements to maintain the distance between garden users. This research is a perceptual research using a survey method obtained through distributing questionnaires and processed by quantitative descriptive and chi-square test. As for the results obtained in this study, garden designers agree that the border element is an effective way that can be used to implement physical distancing in public parks. Although, in general, garden designers prefer hardscape over softscapes as a border element, there are different preferences for the type of hardscape and softscape used. Garden designers prefer fences, portable benches> 2m apart and concrete construction as a hardscape barrier that can be applied to gardens that have been built. Meanwhile, the selection of softscape in the garden that has been built tends to use flowering shrubs as a border element. The conclusion of this study is the preference for material selection that is different in terms of functionality and aesthetics is caused by the pandemic

Abstract The aim of this study is to reveal relations between creativity in design and the cognitive developmental stages of designers within a Post-Piagetian approach. In this study design processes were deeply inspected with the aim of obtaining more comprehensive information about the effects of individual’s cognitive status on the design processes, problemsolving and quality of idea generation . In this field, studies done so far have been conducted on test results as indicators of creativity. Withinthe present study, however, protocol analyses were also evaluated, in addition to test results, and thanks to this addition, it was possible to determine the qualitative and quantitative effects of cognitive developmental stages on creativity. A total of twenty-five students voluntarily participated in the research. To collect data, two different methods were employed. The Social Paradigm Belief Inventory (SPBI), was employed to determine students' cognitive stages and scores, and the Think-aloud protocol was used to elicit verbal reports of the thought sequences of the students. In order to analyse the verbal reports reflecting designers' cognitive activities, the method of Linkography was conducted and the general statistics of segments were measured. To assess the relations between creativity in design and the cognitive developmental stages of the designers, SPBI scores and the general statistical values obtained from the design sessions were correlated. Findings showed that there is a strong and significant correlation between the cognitive development levels and creativity, in favour of dialectical thinking.

As more and more arch bridges built with the construction method of cantilever erection, the strength and entirety of the bridge shall worry the designers. This paper studies an arch bridge with a 65-meter span, gives the static loading test plan and the dynamic test plan, analyzes the testing data of the displacement and strain, explains the methods of static and dynamic load test in detail, and gives a conclusion about the bearing capacity and dynamic properties of bridge. This can be referred by the similar bridge.

AbstractThis work aims to test Prosperity Thinking methodology in Action and assess whether this method would respond to the needs of designers, innovators, and change-makers that are willing to change the food system. Starting from the evolution of marketing design to human-centered design, we illustrate the importance of taking into account the planet's means in the design for Sustainability at the system level. We approached the problem starting from practice, with an Action Research Innovation Management Framework (Guertler, Kriz, and Sick, 2020). Results show that designers, innovators, and changemakers have an interest in a methodology that helps them to analyze and solve systemic challenges linking the micro (human) and macro (planet) through a participatory approach to achieve long-term impact of the designed solutions.
