Sponges (phylum Porifera) are ubiquitous inhabitants of marine ecosystems and have been shown to provide substantial ecosystem services. Despite this ecological importance, the sponge fauna in California has received little study. Here I use a collection of kelp forest sponges to describe the diversity of the order Tethyida in California. This order contains the genus Tethya, which has been included in long-term ecological monitoring projects. I show that Tethya vacua is a junior synonym of Tethya californiana, and thus all Tethya populations known in California belong to a single species. Gen

Conventionally, the identification of sponges is based on two criteria: Morphology (shape, colour, surface characteristics and consistency) and macro-morphology (spicules, sponging fibres and their arrangement). This identification technique is sometimes unreliable due to the plasticity of sponges’ characteristics, which causes misidentification. We utilized universal barcode COI primers to identify sponges in this study. This study shows the results that have been collected through the study of the following methods. Out of 83 samp

A new species of Melibe is described based on two specimens collected in Florida. This new species is well differentiated morphologically and genetically from other species of Melibe studied to date. The four residue deletions in the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 protein found in all previously sequenced tropical species of Melibe sequenced (and Melibe rosea) are also present in this new species. These deletions do not appear to affect important structural components of this protein but might have fitness implications. This paper provides the first confirmed record

The first occurrence of the alien gastropod Melibe fimbriata in the Taranto marine coastal area is reported. This mollusc was observed on muddy bottoms covered with dense algal beds mainly composed of Chaetomorpha linum, Gracilaria spp. and the invasive chlorophyta Caulerpa racemosa. Occasionally, M. fimbriata specimens were found in proximity to mussel farms. Most specimens of M. fimbriata were observed during diurnal foraging activity and associated with anaspideans species, like native Aplysia depilans and the lessepsian immigrant Bursatella leachii. Melibe fimbriata can be considered a def

The demosponge Tethya citrina Sarà & Melone was subjected to long-term aquarium farming, considering that several species belonging to this genus are a rich source of useful bioactive metabolites. The rearing method in the present research was mainly based on applying parameters taken from the current literature. The sponge's biological activity was assessed in terms of survival and growth over time; status of filtering apparatus; protein banding profiles. Farmed sponges showed a high survival rate and marked reduction in size. In addition, they were frequently affected by massive producti

Recent phylogenetic analyses of demosponges have suggested that the order Poecilosclerida is monophyletic and nested within the paraphyletic ‘order’ Hadromerida. Until now, this result has rested upon very limited taxon sampling of SSU sequences and partial LSU sequences. We collected and analysed additional full-length SSU and LSU sequences to test the validity and position of the poecilosclerid/hadromerid clade within demosponges, and we sampled a short segment of the LSU from diverse hadromerids to explore the internal relationships of Hadromerida. Our data strongly support the existence of

Tetillidae is a sponge family distributed all over the world but with some genera apparently endemic from the Antarctic and Subantarctic (the “Antarctic clade”). Species identification results tricky due to the similarities of their morphological characters. However, molecular phylogenies have helped to resolve the family taxonomy. The last phylogenetic study on Tetillidae suggested the creation of two new genera: Levantiniella and Antarctotetilla. Lenvantiniella, from Middle East Mediterranean Sea, was previously classified within Cinachyrella, from which it differs in the small rounded surfa

A new species of Hypogastrura from the Romanian Carpathians is described and illustrated. The new species is characterised by unique combination of morphological characters: presence of seven ocelli, the antennal segment IV with 4 thin, cylindrical sensilla, the presence of 5 setae on ventral tube, the short anal spines situated on high papillae and distinct chaetotaxy. The species is not easy to classify in the present system of the generic subdivision. Considering the presence of only 7+7 ocelli, the new species can be compared only with H. pyrenaica (Cassagnau, 1959), while in other morphol
