Abstract To what extent do speakers decompose morphologically complex words, such as segmentable, into their morphological constituents? In this article, we argue that spelling errors in English affixes reflect morphological boundary strength and degrees of segmentability. In support of this argument, we present a case study examining the spelling of the suffixes -able/-ible, -ence/-ance, and -ment in an online resource (Tweets), in forms such as <availible>, <invisable>, <eloquance>, and <bettermint>. Based on previous research on morphological productivity and boundary strength (Hay, 2002; Hay & Baayen, 2002, 2005), we hypothesized that morphological segmentability should affect the choice between <able> vs. <ible>, <ance> vs. <ence>, and <ment> vs. <-mint>. An analysis of roughly 23,000 non-standard spellings is consistent with that hypothesis, underscoring the usefulness of spelling variation as a source of evidence for morphological segmentability and for the role of morphological representations in language production and comprehension.

Purpose:this study offers a rare insight into senior leadership in International Baccalaureate (IB) international schools. The IB international school profits from the perceived quality and consistency of the IB brand; international schools, however, suffer from an endemic culture of change and reinterpretation. The IB learner profile (IBLP) offers scope for consistency and an overarching ethos, and research finds that ‘buy-in’ to the IBLP and modelling of it in all aspects of school life are essential in achieving this. It emerges that buy-in to the IBLP in directors is split between the personal and the operational.Research method:This interpretive study explores IB directors in multiphase research over two years employing an aspect of critical phenomenology through the lens of the IBLP and Global Citizenship Education (GCE).Findings:Only one in six directors uses the IBLP in leadership. Generally, directors attribute the IBLP a junior status. Analysis through Bourdieu finds IB directors have higher loyalty to (loosely defined) GCE through their Christian values. A foregrounding of individual values over the secular IBLP places IB directors as primary catalysts for the change culture unravelling the consistency of the IB international school, confirming the value of the IBLP in leadership.

Identity-based encryption (IBE), and its hierarchical extension (HIBE), are interesting cryptographic primitives that aim at the implicit authentication on the users’ public keys by using users’ identities directly. During the past several decades, numerous elegant pairing-based (H)IBE schemes were proposed. However, most pairing-related security assumptions suffer from known quantum algorithmic attacks. Therefore, the construction of lattice-based (H)IBE became one of the hot directions in recent years. In the setting of most existing lattice-based (H)IBE schemes, each bit of a user’s identity is always associated with a parameter matrix. This always leads to drastic but unfavorable increases in the sizes of the system public parameters. To overcome this issue, we propose a flexible trade-off mechanism between the size of the public parameters and the involved computational cost using the blocking technique. More specifically, we divide an identity into l′ segments and associate each segment with a matrix, while increasing the lattice modulo slightly for maintaining the same security level. As a result, for the setting of 160-bit identities, we show that the size of the public parameters can be reduced by almost 89.7% (resp. 93.8%) while increasing the computational cost by merely 5.2% (resp. 12.25%) when l′ is a set of 16 (resp. 8). Finally, our IBE scheme is extended to an HIBE scheme, and both of them are proved to achieve the indistinguishability of ciphertexts against adaptively chosen identity and chosen plaintext attack (IND-ID-CPA) in the standard model, assuming that the well-known ring learning with error (RLWE) problem over the involved ideal lattices is intractable, even in the post-quantum era.

Abstract Background: The indications for treating children with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) remain controversial. A valid and reliable bleeding assessment tool could assist in objectively quantifying bleeding and influence treatment decisions. Both the ITP Bleeding Score (IBLS) and the ITP-Bleeding Assessment Tool (BAT) have been developed to assess bleeding severity in ITP. The IBLS scores bleeding severity using an 11-item tool with grading from 0 to 2 and the 18-item BAT grades from 0 to 3 or 4. The BAT includes some types of bleeding not represented on the IBLS, such has intramuscular hematomas. To date, no data describe how these two measures compare when measuring bleeding associated with ITP. Objective: To describe and compare bleeding as assessed by both the IBLS and BAT and to correlate bleeding severity with platelet counts in a cohort of children with ITP. Methods: A longitudinal observational cohort of children ages >1 and < 18 years with ITP, were enrolled from 2013-2015 in the Pediatric ITP Consortium of North America ICON1 trial. All children were enrolled prior to starting a new second line monotherapy (not IVIG, steroids or anti-D). At enrollment, bleeding was assessed using the IBLS in all children. A subset of children also underwent a BAT assessment. Grades of bleeding were described and compared between tools and agreement in grading was assessed. Severity was correlated with platelet count using Spearman's correlation calculation. Results: 118 children were enrolled from 21 ICON centers. 54% had chronic ITP and the median age was 11.4y (range 1.2-17.8). The mean platelet count was 28 x 109/l (SD 57) and 88% had a baseline platelet count of <30 x 109/l. The burden of skin and oral bleeding was high. Table 1 compares bleeding scores for the 78 patients with both measures. Agreement for grades 0, 1, and 2 between the measures was highest for urinary bleeding (97%), gastrointestinal (95%), subconjunctival (95%), and epistaxis (91%). Agreement between IBLS oral bleeding by historyand BAT gum bleeding was 78% and with BAT oral cavity bleeding was 79%. IBLS oral bleeding by physical examination and BAT gum bleeding was 73% and BAT oral cavity bleeding was 79%. The lowest agreement was seen for skin manifestations. IBLS skin bleeding by history showed only 54% and 62% agreement with the BAT ecchymoses and petechiae items respectively. IBLS skin bleeding by physical examination showed 59% agreement with both the BAT ecchymoses and petechiae items. Grades 3 and 4 scores from the BAT did not provide additional information beyond the IBLS for most sites of bleeding. For sites included on the BAT but not represented on the IBLS, only 1 child had an intramuscular hematoma, 1 suffered an ocular bleed, and none experienced hemarthrosis. Bleeding from minor wounds and bleeding with tooth loss captured additional bleeding symptoms in 9 and 4 children, respectively. There were no episodes of pulmonary or intracranial hemorrhage in the cohort. Table 2 shows the correlation between bleeding severity and platelet count for all items on each measure. Conclusion: The IBLS and BAT were similarly effective at identifying bleeding symptoms, although neither tool showed strong correlation with the platelet count. There were moderate correlations noted between skin bleeding scores and platelet counts for both tools. A major limitation of this comparison is the different definitions of bleeding severity between the two measures. For sites where the items were more detailed, agreement declined (i.e. adding specificity reduced generalizability). While no patients in our cohort exhibited significant grade 3 or 4 bleeding outside of skin findings, we conclude that in the setting of clinical trials, the ability to capture very severe bleeding might be an important distinction that supports using the more complicated BAT, but for clinical practice, a simplified assessment such as the IBLS may suffice. Biofuels are receiving increased scientific attention, and recently different biofuels have been proposed for spark ignition engines. This paper presents the state of art of using biofuels in spark ignition engines (SIE). Different biofuels, mainly ethanol, methanol, i-butanol-n-butanol, and acetone, are blended together in single dual issues and evaluated as renewables for SIE. The biofuels were compared with each other as well as with the fossil fuel in SIE. Future biofuels for SIE are highlighted. A proposed method to reduce automobile emissions and reformulate the emissions into new fuels is presented and discussed. The benefits and weaknesses of using biofuels in SIE are summarized. The study established that ethanol has several benefits as a biofuel for SIE; it enhanced engine performance and decreased pollutant emissions significantly; however, ethanol showed some drawbacks, which cause problems in cold starting conditions and, additionally, the engine may suffer from a vapor lock situation. Methanol also showed improvements in engine emissions/performance similarly to ethanol, but it is poisonous biofuel and it has some sort of incompatibility with engine materials/systems; its being miscible with water is another disadvantage. The lowest engine performance was displayed by n-butanol and i-butanol biofuels, and they also showed the greatest amount of unburned hydrocarbons (UHC) and CO emissions, but the lowest greenhouse effect. Ethanol and methanol introduced the highest engine performance, but they also showed the greatest CO2 emissions. Acetone introduced a moderate engine performance and the best/lowest CO and UHC emissions. Single biofuel blends are also compared with dual ones, and the results showed the benefits of the dual ones. The study concluded that the next generation of biofuels is expected to be dual blended biofuels. Different dual biofuel blends are also compared with each other, and the results showed that the ethanol–methanol (EM) biofuel is superior in comparison with n-butanol–i-butanol (niB) and i-butanol–ethanol (iBE).

In the English language adjectives can either be placed before the noun or after the nounin the noun phrase. This thesis is concerned with the postposition of adjectives inEnglish. It is particularly concerned with adjectives ending in -ible and -able which caneither take a prepositive or postpositive position when modified by a superlativeadjective, only or next etc. In the theoretical section of this study, reasons for whypostposition might occur and historic information about the -ble suffix are described. The usage of these adjectives in both the prepositive and postpositive position isfurthermore excerpted from the Corpus of Contemporary American English. Twentyadjectives from the adjective sample are further analysed in detail regarding theirpostposition, to ascertain which characteristics might lead to postposition, in principlesemantics, domain usage, etymology, syntactic function, and the characteristics of theirnoun collocates. Ten nouns are further analysed using the same criteria to ascertain ifcertain nouns can affect the postposition of adjectives in the noun phrase. From theseexamples, conclusions about the common characteristics of adjectives ending in -blethat prefer the postpositive position are drawn. The results showed that -ible adjectiveshad a 17.4% tendency to be postposed, whereas -able adjectives had a 17.5 % tendencyto be postposed. Which can be compared to the 4.6 % chance that an adjective ispostposed in English. -Ible and -able adjectives were, furthermore, mostly postposed inprepositional phrases, phrases with complements and in fixed expressions. The -ibleadjectives were also often of Latin or French origin, whilst the -able adjectives were ofFrench origin. These adjectives were moreover commonly used in the academic domainand denoted a dynamic sense. Their noun collocates were, lastly, commonly inanimate, intangible objects used in the academic domain.
