Produksi komoditas lidah buaya di Kabupaten Bogor sampai saat ini mengalami penurunan, meskipun pernah dicanangkan menjadi daerah pengembangan komoditas lidah buaya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis nilai tambah dalam usaha pengolahan produk lidah buaya, serta menganalisis sistem pemasaran lidah buaya dari petani hingga konsumen akhir. Hasil penelitian ini dijelaskan secara deskriptif kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Komoditas lidah buaya dari petani di Kabupaten Bogor telah diolah menjadi produk olahan seperti jus, koktail, rainbow cake, kerupuk dan teh kulit lidah buaya. Berdasakan perhitungan nilai tambah dengan metode hayami, produk olahan rainbow cake memiliki nilai tambah paling besar. Terdapat 6 saluran pemasaran lidah buaya di Kabupaten Bogor, yaitu 3 saluran pemasaran grade A dan 3 saluran pemasaran grade B. Petani dalam memasarkan lidah buaya masih melibatkan tengkulak. Saluran pemasaran 1, 2 dan 4 adalah saluran yang mudah diakses oleh petani. Saluran pemasaran 2 (Petani → Suplayer → Supermarket → Konsumen) merupakan saluran yang relatif efisien, karena harga yang diterima petani relatif lebih tinggi, nilai marjin saluran pemasaran yang relatif lebih kecil dan nilai farmer’s share yang relatif lebih tinggi dari saluran yang lainnya.

Arainbowt-coloringof at-connected graphGis an edge coloring such that for any two distinct verticesuandvofGthere are at leasttinternally vertex-disjoint rainbow(u,v)-paths. In this work, we apply a Rank Genetic Algorithm to search for rainbowt-colorings of the family of Moore cages with girth six(t;6)-cages. We found that an upper bound in the number of colors needed to produce a rainbow 4-coloring of a(4;6)-cage is 7, improving the one currently known, which is 13. The computation of the minimum number of colors of a rainbow coloring is known to be NP-Hard and the Rank Genetic Algorithm showed good behavior finding rainbowt-colorings with a small number of colors.

The aim of this paper is to investigate teachers' personal characteristics and metaphorical perceptions to multicultural education. In this paper both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. "Multicultural Personality Questionnaire" was applied to the teachers (72 females, 47 males) working at Kırklareli in the 2016-2017 academic year to collect the quantitative data. The qualitative data of this research were collected by a space filled question (multiculturalism is similar to...;because...). The results show that teachers have high scors of “Multicultural Personality Questionaire”. The metaphorical images that teachers produce for the concept of multiculturalism are examined in terms of frequency. The results listed as rainbow, ashure, mosaic, rug, greenery, spice, garden, crayons, treasure, cake, music, forest, salad, table and meal. Also reasons for analogy of the metaphors that teachers use about the concept of multiculturalism arrenged as; the union of differences (n=81), which benefit (n=22), value-added (n=8), the parser (n=3) and unknown (n=2).

Pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat merupakan kewajiban yang harus dilaksanakan oleh dosen bersama dengan mahasiswa. Pengabdian ini dilaksanakan di Desa Susukan Kecamatan Tirtayasa. Tujuan dari pengabdian adalah meningkatkan ketrampilan dan kesejahteraan masyarakat dengan membuat produk-produk inovatif hasil UMKM. Adanya inovasi dari produk-produk tersebut diharapkan mampu memberikan nilai jual lebih, sehingga dapat meningkatkan keuntungan yang diperoleh para pelaku usaha. Selama ini produk bolu kukus yang banyak dijual kurang variatif, sehingga diperlukan adanya inovasi agar berkembang. Pembuatan bolu kukus berkarakter yang diberi merek Rainbow Cake, tidak memerlukan penambahan biaya produksi yang besar, tetapi diperlukan kreatifitas kemampuan untuk menggambar di atas bolu. Dengan memberikan pelatihan pembuatan bolu kukus berkarakter diharapkan selain mengasah ketrampilan para pelaku usaha dalam berkreatif dengan seni menggambar di atas bolu, tetapi juga akan meningkatkan penghasilan. Pada pelatihan diberikan juga cara-cara pengemasan dan labeling produk agar lebih bersih dan menarik. Selain itu bolu kukus berkarakter diharapkan mampu memperluas segmen pasar, sehingga dapat dijadikan produk favorit untuk semua kalangan masyarakat. Melalui kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat selain memberikan tantangan kepada para dosen dan mahasiswa agar lebih kreatif dan inovatif, juga akan meningkatkan kualitas dan keberalangsungan produk yang dihasilkan pada waktu yang akan datang.

This is a study on the properties of a square electrostatic rainbow lens doublet. The said optical element consists of two square electrostatic rainbow lenses with the second lens axially rotated for 45 degrees with respect to the first one. The propagation of a proton beam with a kinetic energy of 10 keV through the doublet is in the focus of our analysis. The potential of the electrodes of both lenses is 2 kV. The electrostatic potential and the electric field components of the lens doublet are calculated using a 3-D computer code based on the method of moments. Spatial and angular distributions of protons propagating through the lens doublet, as well as the parameters defining beam quality, are investigated. As in the case of the single square electrostatic rainbow lens, the evolution of these distributions is determined by the evolution of corresponding rainbow lines, generated by the use of the theory of crystal rainbows. Our study shows that a beam core in the shape of a cusped square is formed by the spatial rainbow line that appears first. This rainbow line occurs during proton propagation through the first lens. The beam core retains the cusped square shape during the propagation through the second lens. The electrostatic field of the second lens causes the appearance of an additional spatial rainbow line, which encompasses the beam core and defines the outer border of the beam. This rainbow line constitutes the main difference between the cases of the lens doublet and a single lens.

The reduction of phosphorous waste from farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was attempted by feeding diets of reduced P content. The protein source was fishmeal in which the bone fraction had been removed. This was achieved either by solubilizing the fish material (press cake) by enzymatic treatment and subsequent filtering, or by removing the fish bones by a skin/bone separator. Two fish species were used, sand eel (Ammodytes marinus) and sprat (Sprattus sprattus). Due to the small size of the fish, only bones were retained in the skin/bone separator. Traditional fishmeal from the same species were used for control experiments. The fishmeal samples were used together with other ingredients in a traditional extruded dry feed formulation (Ecolife 19). The diets were used in full scale experiments in a fresh water fish farm in Denmark, as well as in small scale experiments in aquaria. Direct calculations on the feed conversion ratio and the specific growth rate on both experiments showed that the enzyme treated codes performed less well than the other codes. However, when compensating for the different energy content of the diets, the enzymatic treatment did not give rise to a higher feed conversion ratio, nor did it give rise to a lower average growth rate than the other codes. It was not possible to make any final conclusions with respect to the effect of the enzymatic treated fishmeal on the pollution risk from P. This was due to large variation on the P determinations.

In this paper, we consider the effects of distorted gravity on the traversability of the wormholes. In particular, we consider configurations which are sustained by their own gravitational quantum fluctuations. The Ultraviolet divergences appearing to one loop are taken under control with the help of a Noncommutative geometry representation and gravity's rainbow. In this context, it will be shown that for every framework, the self-sustained equation will produce a Wheeler wormhole, namely a wormhole of Planckian size. This means that, from the point of view of traversability, the wormhole will be traversable in principle, but not in practice. For this purpose, in the context of gravity's rainbow we have considered different proposals of rainbow's functions to see if the smallness of the wormhole is dependent on the chosen form of the rainbow's function. Unfortunately, we discover that this is not the case and we suggest that the self-sustained equation can be improved to see if the wormhole radius can be enlarged or not. Some consequences on topology change are discussed.

The purpose of this study is to reveal how the academicians working in the field of recreation conceptualize their ideas about “recreation” through metaphors. Phenomenology being among the qualitative research methods was used in this study. The research population is composed of the academicians working in the field of recreation in different universities of Turkey. Qualitative data collection method via metaphors was used. When metaphors are used to "describe", a situation, event and phenomenon are described as they exist (Yıldırım and Şimşek, 2013). Data from the study were collected by using a semi-structured metaphor form via survey online. The raw data obtained from the study were examined, incomplete or inexpedient ones were excluded and metaphors were modeled by transferring them to the Nvivo 10 program.As a result of the data obtained, the academicians working in the field of recreation use such concepts as escape, star, giant, happiness, music box, spring air, freedom, traveler, broken chain ring, octopus, life, Aladdin and the magic lamp, sun, a colorful cake with mixed fruit, work potential, a multi-purpose field or saloon, funfair, umbrella, flying carpet, human, Aegean sea, sea, rainbow, water, living, forest, fishing tackle, bridge, time, wind, chameleon, seasons, breath, science, nature and spice while describing the concept of recreation metaphorically. The data obtained after the interviews were then coded under the appropriate themes after being analyzed with the content analysis method. According to the data obtained, it has been found that it has been gathered under 5 (five) themes as "As a Value for Individual and Society", "Serving Needs", "Social Reputation", "Recreate" and "Self- realization". In conclusion, it is observed that the metaphors obtained comply with the recreation theories regarding the metaphorical perceptions of the academicians working in the field of recreation about the “recreation” concept. In order to better understand the concept of recreation, it is recommended to take evaluation results in practical activities.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Water storage in reservoirs forms an integral part of the agricultural landscape in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. A few large reservoirs serve primarily as a drinking and industrial water supply, while on private farms, small reservoirs provide irrigation water for the dry summer period. Protection of water quality to secure irrigation and drinking water quality, and the extension of water use efficiency are priority issues in the Western Cape. In the current study, the suitability of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) cage farming as a non-abstractive water use was investigated. The current study concentrated on the identification, and where possible quantification of aquaculture impacts, the identification of successful sites and a description of requirements in which net-cage aquaculture has none or a very low negative impact on water quality (e.g. <15 % change from previous water quality conditions for phosphorus concentrations). In order to study the effects of 5 t trout cage production units in reservoirs <15 ha in area, the general ecology of the irrigation reservoirs was assessed. Sixteen reservoirs without aquaculture production (reference reservoirs) were compared to 26 reservoirs with aquaculture production (production sites with varying production histories). Catchment characteristics were also monitored. Water from different depths (0 m, 2 m, 6 m and near bottom) was tested for physical and chemical qualities as well as nutrient concentrations. Phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass and species composition was monitored. In addition to the general phytoplankton findings, cyanophytes were evaluated for their contribution to algal taint problems that emerged at a number of production sites. Sediments were tested for total phosphorus content and phosphorus release capacity. Indicators and minimum conditions to avoid the most common production problems were formulated. In order to determine long-term production success, which prevents trophic level changes of reservoirs, a mass balance approach (nutrient budget) was employed to indicate the limits for nutrients that can be added. The phosphorus balance indicated long term trends for reservoirs with and without aquaculture. The detailed mass balance approach was compared to a “ready to use” carrying capacity model that estimated the maximum fish load each reservoir could support. The anthropological input of phosphorus into the reservoirs causes a decreasing water quality in the studied reservoirs and this development was also reported for lowland rivers. Twenty percent of the studied reservoirs are in a condition that could be an immediate threat to fish or water bird health (e.g. free ammonia concentrations and pH). Harmful algal blooms were not observed. Aquaculture production evoked changes in water chemistry and ecology in most of the studied reservoirs. Adverse effects of aquaculture sites versus non-aquaculture sites were: increased phytoplankton biomass and species shifts towards sizes >80 μm. The increased phytoplankton abundance influenced pH maxima to values >9 at mid-day. The high pH fluctuations were greatly influenced by the naturally low alkalinity and hence low calcium buffering capacity of Western Cape waters. The deoxygenation of the hypolimnion during stagnation (summer) occurred faster in reservoirs of certain character, greatly dependent on elevation and surface area, with consequent acidification of the hypolimnion, as well as ammonia and total phosphorus (TP) accumulation. In this context, a diversity of each reservoir with and without aquaculture production, with a similar ratio of undisturbed reservoirs to reservoirs with influence of e.g. agriculture, were compared to each other. When grouping the respective differences from the average reference reservoir (i.e. no trout production), a low impact on water quality was manifested at four sites (15 %) with <15 % increase of bottom TP and ammonia, while eight sites (31 %) showed medium effects (59 % mean increase), and a high impact was found at 54 % of the sites (312 % mean increase). In reservoirs without aquaculture, the extent of incoming phosphorus (which could represent an influence by runoff from agricultural land) was very high. However, in small reservoirs (<5 ha), these values were exceeded by the incoming phosphorus from aquaculture practices. In the case of small reservoirs where the carrying capacity was clearly surpassed, effects caused by aquaculture were severe and the assimilation of waste by the system was not possible (in extreme cases aquaculture waste delivered 60 to 90 % of all incoming phosphorus – two to nine times the phosphorus brought in by rivers and runoff). With regards to sediment, only indirect conclusions could be drawn. Aquaculture production increased hypolimnetic anoxia and the latter was shown to increase potential phosphorus release from sediments. This implies that not only will aquaculture increase the phosphorus concentration of surface waters directly, but it will also increase internal loading. The sedimentation rate was increased with cage aquaculture which affects a hypothesized area of approximately 0.2 to 1.0 ha depending on reservoir hydrology. The composition of the sediment increased organic components which can impact on sediment processes. It can be postulated that increased sedimentation of aquaculture waste and extended anoxic conditions impact on macrozoobenthos. Hydrological and nutrient mass exchange of the reservoirs indicated that no annual increase of phosphorus was achieved with low nutrient input (good inflowing water quality) or good water exchange (>5 times per year), and sometimes with extraction of hypolimnetic water during the stagnation period (summer). A model developed by Beveridge (1984) showed similar results to the mass balance approach and can therefore serve as a more ready model to determine suitable stocking rates. The small (man-made) reservoirs in the Western Cape are in a eutrophication process which far exceeds the speed of natural eutrophication (trophic states indicating highly eutrophic or hypertrophic conditions after approximately 10 to 20 years following construction of the reservoirs) and this process is triggered by agricultural practice (indicated by literature – not a subject of this study). However, it is concluded from the data of this study that trout-cage aquaculture duplicated the total phosphorus already present (independent of continuation of the projects, the phosphorus introduced was trapped in the closed systems the reservoirs represent) in only 1 to 2 years of production - which means a significant acceleration of the eutrophication process already in place. There are positive exceptions where trout-cage production is possible without negative effects. Careful site selection is the most important step in successful and sustainable trout production. No impact of aquaculture was recorded at four reservoirs (15 % of the investigated reservoirs) which shared the characteristics of good water exchange (>3 times per year) and a minimum surface area of 5 ha. Additionally, criteria that reduced the risk of algal taint included a minimum water depth of 6 to 7 m in a reservoir at its lowest water point (to avoid intermediate mixing during the stagnation period) as well as cold hypolimnetic conditions (<17 °C) to minimize cyanophyte cyst remobilization. Further improvement of food conversion ratio (feeding management) and feed quality are the next (after site selection) two most important components that determine if a reservoir can be utilised for cage production without any long-term changes. There is potential in advances in feed quality, feed management and waste collection systems. These measures (e.g. the cage size could be decreased to efficate feeding management) can increase the number of sustainable sites and achieve multiplication of water use without water quality deterioration.

Die deoksiginasie van die hipolimnion gedurende stagnasie (somer) het vinniger plaasgevind in oorbelaaide reservoirs, met gevolglik ‘n versuring van die hipolymnion, sowel as die akkumelering van ammoniak en totale fosfor. In hierdie konteks word reservoirs met en sonder landbouproduksie, met ‘n gelyke verhouding van onversteurde reservoirs tot reservoirs wat deur landboubedrywighede beinvloed word, met mekaar vergelyk. By vier persele (15 %) is ‘n lae impak vasgestel (<15 % toename in bodem TF en ammoniak), terwyl agt persele (31 %) ‘n medium impak getoon het (59 % gemiddelde toename in bodem TF en ammoniak) en ‘n hoë impak is opgemerk by 54 % van die persele (31 % gemiddelde toename in bodem TF en ammoniak). In reservoirs sonder akwakultuur, was die omvang van fosforinvloeiing baie hoog en is moontlik veroorsaak deur die invloei van afloopwater uit omliggende landbougebiede. Alhoewel in klein reservoirs (<5 ha) was hierdie waardes oorskadu deur die invloeiing van fosfor deur akwakultuur praktyke.In die geval van klein reservoirs, waar die drakrag duidelik oorskry is, was die gevolge, soos veroorsaak deur akwakultuur ernstig, en die assimilasie van afval deur die sisteem nie moontlik nie. In die uiterste gevalle het akwakultuurafval 60 % - 90 % van alle inkomende fosfor gelewer - twee tot nege maal die fosfor wat deur riviere en afloopwater ingevloei het. Wat die sediment aanbetref, kon slegs indirekte gevolgtrekkings gevorm word. Akwakultuurproduksie het hipolimnetiese anoksia laat toeneem en die laasgenoemde verskynsel, het die potensiaal aangedui vir die toename in die vrystelling van fosfor vanaf die sediment. Dit dui daarop dat akwakultuur nie alleen die fosforkonsentrasie in die oppervlaktwater laat toeneem nie, maar sou ook die interne belading laat kon toeneem. Kleiner mensgemaakte reservoirs in die Wes-Kaap is onderhewig aan ‘n eutrofikasie proses wat die spoed van natuurlike eutrofikasie (trofies verwys na ‘n hoogs eutrofiese of hipertrofiese toestand ongeveer 10 tot 20 jaar na reservoir konstruksie) oorskry. Literatuur (nie ondersoek in die huidige studie) dui aan dat hierdie versnelde eutrofikasie proses meegebring word deur landbouaktiwiteite in die opvangsarea van die reservoirs. Resultate van die huidige studie het getoon dat forelproduksie in hokstelsels, die konsentrasie van total fosfor wat reeds beskikbaar was, verdubbel het. Die toename in fosforkonsentrasie het binne 1 tot 2 jaar na die aanvang van forelproduksie in die betrokke reservoirs, plaasgevind. Daar is egter uitsonderings waar forelproduksie in hokstelsels moontlik was, sonder die gepaardgaande afname in die waterkwaliteit. Die belangrikste stap vir suksesvolle en volhoubare forelproduksie is deeglike perseelseleksie. Daar is geen impak van akwakultuur waargeneem by vier persele (15 %) wat die eienskappe van goeie waterverplasing (>3 keer per jaar) en ‘n minimum oppervlakarea van 5 ha gehad het nie. Bykomend, sluit kriteria wat die risiko van algbesmetting laat afneem, ‘n minimum waterdiepte van 6 tot 7 m in ‘n reservoir by die laagste punt in (om te verhoed dat intermediêre vermenging plaasvind gedurende die stagnasieperiode) sowel as koue hipolimnetiese toestande (<17 °C) om sianobakterieë sist remobilisasie te minimaliseer. Verdere verbetering van die VOH (voeromsettingsverhouding onder voedingsbestuur) en voerkwaliteit is na perseeleleksie, die volgende komponente wat kan aandui of ‘n perseel gebruik kan word vir hokkultuur sonder enige impak. Vordering met voerkwaliteit en voedingsbestuur kan die aantal volhoubare persele laat toeneem en daardeur meer effektiewe watergebruik teweeg bring, sonder die verwante waterkwaliteit verswakking.

This thesis explores the embodied aesthetics of performance in the making of belonging in post-apartheid South Africa, through an investigation of the klopse, also known as Cape Minstrel and the ‘Coons’, which are part of the annual New Year’s carnival in Cape Town. For this thesis I use the word klopse to refer to the carnival troupes. I map how from its inception the carnival aesthetics changed and came to represent something new and different as the participants engaged with the changing South African and Cape Town society. These changes are explored in connection with both coloured identity politics in the context of the “rainbow nation” discourse and the efforts to represent carnival in Cape Town as a colourful event in a global city to international and national visitors. I argue that at the core of it is the issue of belonging which is embodied through the aesthetics.

This mini thesis explores the experiences of young unaccompanied girls who arrived in South Africa and who are classified today as teenage refugee girls. The author investigated the challenges faced and adjustment mechanisms applied by the girls during pre-migration, trans-migration and post-migration phases. This study highlights significance of stability and safety for functional adolescent development and what happens when stability and safety are absent.

This thesis explores the precarious nature of authenticity as it manifested itself in the activities of H.I.M. Society, the Rastafarian student organization at the University of the Western Cape. Ethnographic research was conducted, to explore the above mentioned issue, which involved observation of various activities and in depth interviews. I also inquired about outsiders' perspectives on Rastafarianism and H.I.M. Society in particular. Authenticity, as it is conceived in this thesis, is about what a group of people deem culturally important. Three important ideas follow from this. The first is that not everyone in a group agrees on what is important. Put differently authenticating processes tend to be characterized by legitimizing crises. Therefore, secondly, social actors need to invest cultural ideas, objects and practices with authenticity. Lastly the authenticating processes are predicated on boundaries not necessarily as a means of exclusion but as fundamental to determining the core of cultural being and belonging

This chapter discusses the optics of the rainbow as theorized by Sir George Biddle Airy. Airy developed a theory that quantified the dependence upon the raindrop size of the rainbow's angular width and angular radius as well as the spacing of the supernumeraries. The Airy theory also predicted a non-zero distribution of light intensity in Alexander's dark band and a finite intensity at the angle of minimum deviation. However, it could not predict precisely the angular position of many laboratory-generated rainbows, leading several mathematical physicists to seek a more complete theory of scattering. The chapter examines the Airy approximation by performing calculations, taking into account some ray prerequisites and the Airy wavefront. It also explains how colors are distributed in the Airy rainbow before concluding with a derivation for arbitrary p in the case of the Airy wavefront.

Friction dampers have been used to reduce turbine blade vibration levels for a considerable period of time. However, optimal design of these dampers has been quite difficult due both to a lack of adequate theoretical predictions and to difficulties in conducting reliable experiments. One of the difficulties of damper weight optimisation via the experimental route has been the inevitable effects of mistuning. Also, conducting separate experiments for different damper weights involves excessive cost. Therefore, current practice in the turbomachinery industry has been to conduct so-called ‘rainbow tests’ where friction dampers with different weights are placed between blades with a predefined configuration. However, it has been observed that some rainbow test results have been difficult to interpret and have been inconclusive for determining the optimum damper weight for a given bladed-disc assembly. A new method of analysis — a combination of Harmonic Balance Method and structural modification approaches — is presented in this paper for the analysis of structures with friction interfaces and the method is applied to search for qualitative answers about the so-called ‘rainbow tests’ in turbomachinery applications. A simple lumped-parameter model of a bladed-disc model was used and different damper weights were modelled using friction elements with different characteristics. Resonance response levels were obtained for bladed discs with various numbers of blades under various engine-order excitations. It was found that rainbow tests, where friction dampers with different weights are used on the same bladed-disc assembly, can be used to find the optimum damper weight if the mode of vibration concerned has weak blade-to-blade coupling (the case where the disc is almost rigid and blades vibrate almost independently from each other). Otherwise, it is very difficult to draw any reliable conclusion from such expensive experiments.

Degradation of hot section components in the turbine section of gas turbines used in the power generation industry can cause significant problems including financial penalties associated with down time and a decrease in operating efficiency. High temperature oxidation and hot corrosion can cause severe material loss. The use of thermal barrier coatings to mitigate such factors is becoming increasingly common and has been used for many years in land-based gas turbines. However, the experience of equipment users has had limited publicity. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the experiences of a large integrated power company and an independent service provider of turbomachinery refurbishment. A variety of thermal barrier coatings from a few selected vendors were run in a rainbow test over a two year period. Inspections of the stationary nozzle segments were carried out after the first and second year. The findings regarding the performance of the coatings are discussed within. Differences between the coatings application processes, the coating raw material, the vendors and location of part in the nozzle are discussed.

The failure risk of fish cages has increased in the harsher environmental conditions as fish farms have moved into the open sea in recent years. Fatigue failure is an important limit state for the floating system of the fish cage under the long-term action of waves. This study is presented to investigate the applicable probability density function for estimating fatigue life of the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) floating collars. The stress response of the floating collars system in random wave is firstly analyzed based on the finite element analysis combined with a hydrodynamic model. The stress histories of floating collars under each sea state are counted using the rainflow method as a benchmark for fatigue frequency domain analysis. The distribution of stress range was fitted by various probability density functions including Rayleigh, Weibull, Gamma and generalized extreme value (GEV) distributions. Comparisons of the estimated fatigue life using different distributions with rainflow statistic results were performed. Results indicate fatigue estimation based on the GEV and Gamma distributions by removing the negligible low stress range give much more accurate fatigue damage results of the short-term stress range distribution. While Weibull distribution overestimates the fatigue lifetime of the floating collar based on the short-term distribution of stress ranges.

Abstract This paper describes an in-situ validation of advanced cooling designs for turbine airfoils using high accuracy Uniform Crystal Temperature Sensors (UCTS). This was achieved by running a rainbow test of UCTS instrumented parts with different cooling designs in an industrial gas turbine in commercial operation for a period exceeding 6 months. Test results provided valuable information on the cooling performance benefits of the improved design, as well as on different thermal barrier coatings tested as part of the rainbow configuration. This paper presents the comparison between empirical and analytical results. The real engine environment presented obvious challenges to the validation effort, which assumes high accuracy experimental data from a well-controlled test as the basis for comparison. To get as close as possible to this high standard, sources of variation and uncertainties were identified and accounted for in the preparation of the test campaign. This paper describes these in some detail, providing a useful model to practicing engineers. Survival and timeliness of the results were also a concern. Expert installation and removal of the micro-sized crystal sensors was a key contributing factor to the sensor survival. Automated, quality controlled post processing, which correlated changes in the crystal structure and the time history of testing with temperature, enabled accurate reporting of the maximum temperature experienced during the full length of the test for each crystal. The results show excellent agreement between the UCTS reported temperature and the Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) model predictions. Hence the experimental results validated the advanced cooling design configuration. Additionally, this case study demonstrates that UCTS is a well suited non-intrusive, accurate and practical technique applicable for long duration in-situ temperature measurements of turbine components in the conditions most representative of the engine.

Abstract The JSME Code Case N-CC-008 provides design rules for piping seismic design by inelastic response time history analysis and strain-based fatigue criteria. Since the strain time histories obtained from the analysis are multi-axial and random, the Code Case uses the Rainflow method for cycle counting in its procedure of evaluating the ranges of equivalent strain and the fatigue usage factor. The Rainflow method is used for identifying pairs of peaks/valleys of the representative strain and their occurrence times. Then, with the other components of strain and stress at these times, the range of equivalent strain is calculated sequentially. On the other hand, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Division 2 reads “The Rainflow cycle counting method is recommended but not applicable for non-proportional loading.” The authors, then, analyzed the behavior of multi-axial strain from the inelastic response analyses of some dynamic tests of piping systems to test if the piping strains due to seismic excitations are proportional or non-proportional, or somewhere in between. The IS method, which was proposed by Itoh et.al for quantifying the degree of non-proportionality of multi-axial fatigue cycles, was used for the analysis. The analysis results showed that the multi-axial strain in piping systems induced by seismic excitation is almost proportional. Based on this result, the authors concluded that the Rainflow cycle counting method is well applicable for the piping seismic fatigue evaluation. In addition to these numerical analyses with the IS method, some discussions are also made in this paper from the viewpoint of the relation between vibration mode and strain components (compatibility condition between deformation and strain) to support the conclusion that the piping strain by seismic loads is proportional.

Because of the recent emphasis on rail transit infrastructure expansion and rebuilding in the United States, there is concern about the potential adverse vibration effects on existing activities that are sensitive to vibration and ground-borne-noise located in proximity to new or reactivated rail system rights-of-way. A Southern California at-grade/elevated LRT system that is currently under construction required the design and specification of extensive vibration control features. The final design needed to include the entire range of vibration mitigation tools presented in the Federal Transit Administration guidance manual. Designs and Contract Specifications included simple single-layer ballast mats; multi-layer ballast mats; high-resilience direct fixation fasteners; potential wheel-squeal solutions; low-vibration special trackwork; continuously-supported, street-running, floating slab track; and discrete, steel-helical-spring-supported floating slab track. It is noteworthy that the discrete steel-spring-supported FST is the first use of this vibration control approach in an at-grade rail system in the United States. This paper will discuss the overall approach, data analysis, solutions development, and the final designs prepared for this project and how this information may be beneficial to other projects with similar issues.
