Purpose French retailer, Système U, has triggered controversial debates among professionals and parents recently, by inserting images revolutionising gender norms in its Christmas toy catalogue. As children’s perceptions did not feature in these debates, the purpose of this paper is to explore their reactions to this catalogue, its gender-incongruent images and their associated toys. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory qualitative study was conducted with 27 children aged five to ten, from middle-upper social class. The methodology combined in one session participant observation, interview with visual stimuli and a collage exercise. First, each child was observed as they browsed freely through the catalogue, commenting it. Second, the interview focussed on four gender-incongruent images inside the catalogue to further explore reactions. Finally, they participated to a collage exercise on a mini-questionnaire, aiming at checking their gender-flexibility. Findings First, all children tend to focus on their own-gender pages only, as they have an intuitive understanding of the catalogue’s gendered structure. Second, incongruent images tend not to be noticed, with an exception being girls aged nine to ten. Third, the children’s acceptance of the gender-incongruent images is influenced by the gender-constancy stage, with the rigidity peak about gender norms at five to six; children’s own-gender-flexibility, between eight and ten; and the collective nature of the game. Originality/value This paper reveals children’s reactions to a toy catalogue containing gender-incongruent images. It provides new insights into how children notice, understand and appreciate these images and concludes with practical implications for retailers about how to better adapt catalogues.

Purpose From an interpretive semiology perspective this paper examines the meaning suggested by the absence of children in newspaper advertisements, commercial websites and catalogue images of children’s furniture manufacturers. The purpose of the paper is to highlight the multilayered process involved in conveying meaning to the “parent-child cluster” consumer through press and online advertisements designed by children’s furniture manufacturers. Design/methodology/approach A corpus of 200 press advertisements and catalogues produced by children's furniture manufacturers (particularly IKEA and Gautier) was analysed using a combination of Barthes’ (1964) visual analysis and Greimas’ (1987) narrative approach to visual discourses. Findings The scenes portrayed to shape the message addressed to the “parent-child cluster“ consumer, suggest that, in addition to fostering positive values such as self-fulfilment and stimulating background for an active child, they also promote discourses about contemporary childhood and parenthood. Originality/value This paper highlights how furniture retailers through the figurative choices they make to portray a child bedroom and to organize a series of child bedroom images within a catalogue, generate a brand discourse aiming to typify representations of childhood imbued with diverse cognitive, social and emotional dimensions within diverse cultural backgrounds.

Valley of the Bug River is a unique area within the territory of Poland, characterized by rich natural and cultural values. These areas are of agricultural and undeveloped nature to a large degree, while at the same time being covered by legal protection. As a result of the conducted studies among agricultural land owners from 34 communes located in the territory of three provinces (podlaskie, lubelskie and mazowieckie) within the valley of Bug, it was noted that the advantages which largely impact the development of tourism in the area are the natural values of the area and a unique silence and peace, as well as access to the existing touristic infrastructure. Significant role of tourist information as well as the necessity to popularize it were also indicated - through issuing albums, catalogues and other commercial materials and maintainable of high standard of carried out services. The main growth obstacle for agro-tourism is the lack of habit in the society for weekend rest and seasonality of the existing offers.

Food and gastronomic values of a country are distinguished assets in marketing places. The aim of this article is exploring the ways in which Serbia rebrands itself through promoting the local food and culture and positions the nation brand in a transnational marketing context. The key concepts for this research originate from the literature in place marketing and branding. The gastronomic offer is an instrument shaping people’s perceptions about Serbia that is represented and communicated through values, narratives and manifestations. Accordingly, semiotics is adopted for analysing the data, which builds on three levels: axiological, narrative and discursive. Content analysis is used as a supportive method to infer meanings from codes and to determine emerging themes overarching the units of meaning. The tourism marketing strategy of The National Tourism Organization of Serbia (TOS) is closely examined through the touristic promotion materials (i.e. catalogues, posters, Soul Food video). In sum, the analysis results reveal how the country branding strategy of Serbia is handled in terms of the impact on the perceptions with a focus on food as a tourist attraction. The research is valuable for place-marketers, strategists, governments, and scholars from different fields of academia.

In the last twenty years the computer has become the main means of access to highly specialized knowledge and also a protected way of transmission of information in the field of science, technics, literature and arts. The process started by the computerization of librarian catalogues as well by linking of big publishers onto database as PASCAL. Publishers of specialized journals, of press, professional associations and publishing houses made their publications accessible on the computer network, they listed and created their own archives and also made possible the access to research centres, scientific and research workers, publishers and interested readers. In this research work we tried to look up the dictionaries of terms in the field of tourism industry, in French, in the electronic form. Nowadays, the dictionaries of terms can be found in Internet and they are accessible to a wide range of users because they are easily and quickly obtainable. We made a research of various dictionaries of terms in the field of tourism industry in French and the most interesting ones were described.

Abstract This paper investigates the state of information on geoheritage or, in a wider perspective, a geotourist offer that can be found on the Internet, the basic source of information for the potential tourist, at the example of Lower Silesia. In order to achieve the intended aim, firstly a discussion concerning the division of the tourist resources in the literature was presented. It served as the starting point for the selection and analysis of particular resources, and their online promotion techniques. A place of the geotourist resources within this group was highlighted. Next, the analysis of official documents that constitute the basis for actions aimed at the promotion of tourist resources, with the geotourist ones in particular, was carried out. Predominantly, they comprised the strategies of tourism development at different levels, i.e. the level of voivodeship, and the selected counties, where crucial georesources, or geoheritage complexes of the region are located. One of the most important examples is the Kłodzko County, officially referred to in its strategy as “the Tourist County.” The authors also indicated the nature-based tourist resources of Lower Silesia, placing special emphasis on the resources presented in the Geotourist Catalogues - the most comprehensive presentations of this kind of resources in Poland. In the following part, another analysis was presented regarding information on natural resources promoted on the websites of public administration, or local authorities. Selected websites were examined for their accessibility and the manner in which the georesources are presented. The main result of the conducted research is highlighting the fact that geotourism as a distinctive tourism category is not sufficiently promoted online. The reason behind it is the dispersion of geotourist resources being categorised under divergent umbrella terms. A set of actions for the implementation of changes that can possibly improve the present situation was suggested.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Open Data, and Open Government Data, are proving to be an important resource for the economic development inside the domain where information has a key role (Carrara et al., 2015). Although, different practices for data publishing have led to misalignment, underuse and repetition of information (Bizer et al., 2011). For this reason, the Public Administrations have undergone efforts on integrating the information and promoting interoperability through the implementation of best practices, as for example, the use of a common semantics vocabulary for the metadata (DCAT) as proposed by the ISA2 programme of the European Commission. The Interreg Italy-Switzerland GIOCOnDA project has been proposed for enhancing the data sharing processes in the cross-border area, particularly addressing tourism and mobility that are key economic activities for the region. For this work, a review on the data catalogues published in dati.lombardia.it and opendata.swiss is presented. The revision of the datasets showed the need for: 1) defining common semantics for the description of the categories of data to avoid the arbitrary use of vocabularies, and 2) adopting standards for the description of geodata. On the other hand, it was observed the potential to gather existing information to produce geodata querying the datasets with specific keywords that can provide spatial information. Open data, as well as the use of best practices for publishing data, push towards the use of FOSS. In this work, Python has been exploited to analyse the content of the catalogues to access web portals resources.</p>

This article examines the effect on price of different characteristics of holiday hotels in the sun-and-beach segment. The effect on price is estimated under the hedonic function perspective by means of random effect models, known also as mixed or panel models. Some 82,000 prices were gathered between 1991 and 1998 from tour operator catalogues. The study reveals huge price differences between 4-star hotels and the rest, coupled with practically no difference between 1-star and 2-star hotels. Other attributes with a significant effect on price are town, hotel size, distance to the beach and availability of parking place. The results can assist hotel managers in shaping pricing and investment strategies.

Purpose This paper aims to facilitate an immediate immersion of academic literature in the timeshare/vacation ownership industry. Through a synthesis of 92 articles published in academic journals over the past 40 years, the authors demonstrate the breadth of the current research. Topical areas, methodologies and findings are presented, as well as opportunities for further investigation. This paper also provides the reader with a robust consolidation of literature in a tabular form to include authors, publication dates, sources and titles. Design/methodology/approach Through a comprehensive search of multiple academic research databases, university catalogues and references of existing literature and conference proceedings, the authors compiled a review of timeshare research with the aim of classifying the various components and issues that have been examined to date. Findings The timeshare segment of the greater lodging industry is unique due to its real estate ownership component, complex management characteristics and regulatory environment. The unique nature appeals to researchers and provides an opportunity for investigation of generally accepted theories and principles. The literature follows industry advances in the segment, with the majority of research focused on sales and marketing practices, and resort services and operations. An abundance of future research opportunities is identified in the literature, to which only a few have been addressed. Originality/value A synthesis of timeshare literature has not been published to date, either in hospitality literature or in other fields of study, i.e. real estate. Therefore, the authors provide a foundation for researchers, academics and students to utilize in further study and investigation.

The research is based on information services that affect the popularity of the Pulau Pisang and Labuhan Jukung Tourism Areas in the Pesisir Barat Regency, Lampung Province. This area has high tourism potential in the form of islands, beaches, and sea. Information services are an important factor in tourism to attract tourist visits. This study aims to determine digital information technology in the form of an e-catalog that includes marine tourism information in the form of a map and a description of the information therein. The E-catalog for Marine Tourism in the Pulau Pisang and Labuhan Jukung areas can support travel agencies in arranging marine thematic tour packages. The descriptive-qualitative research method is applied by using observation data techniques, interviews, and documentation studies of the research object. The focus of the design is on marine tourism activities in the Pulau Pisang and Labuhan Jukung Tourism Areas, namely beach volleyball, swimming, sunbathing, fishing, snorkeling, diving, boating, and surfing, as well as tourism supporting components, namely amenities, accessibility and support services. There are also two forms of travel patterns that are reviewed for tourists, namely through the start and end points of the journey from the same route, or a continuous path with the end point of the trip by visiting new destinations on different routes.

Purpose – Reviews of scientific publications in the area of tourism continuously find commonalities and repeatedly applied criteria in conceptualizing destination image. Much emphasis has been placed on investigating the image components (dimensions) and potential impacts as perceived by the consumer. Publications on the image formation and change, however, do not disclose many details on the process and impacts of change agents. Hence, this study aims to look into the initial stages of destination image planning and how these plans are implemented through projecting onto the official destination websites. Design/methodology/approach – The text-based content analysis builds on a random sample of one-third of the tourism development plans and the respective official tourism websites of sub-provincial prefectures in China. Terms (originally phrased in Chinese language only) were extracted that could be classified as image components considering the context where they appeared. Findings – Results exhibit a sparse application of varied and imaginative image elements in both the tourism development plans and the official websites. Deviations between intended and projected destinations are substantial. An overwhelming majority of prefectural destination management organizations (DMOs) appears to be distant from a professional implementation of an image positioning strategy. Research limitations/implications – Due to resource limitations, only a random sample of one-third of the 365 sub-provincial prefectures in China could have been screened. To draw a complete, though structurally most probably not very different, picture on the scope and variety of image elements, a complete investigation would be necessary. The projection of image items on the official websites represents a restricted view on possible image formation agents. For a more comprehensive understanding, other information channels (e.g. printed advertising material, travel catalogues and guide books) would complement the perspective on induced image agents. Practical implications – From a managerial perspective, it appears to be an easy job to position a destination along one or two main appeal characteristics, particularly when the majority of these are factual aspects of geography, landscape, history or culture. Whether such a positioning strategy materializes in view of an increasing competition among destinations is questionable. The condensed image profiles identified in this study can act as blueprints for developing more pronounced positioning profiles. The variation across groups of destination image profiles and the composition of prefectures for each group reflects the potential competitive pressure that prefectures may excel unless the DMO representatives decide to go for an adapted target position. Originality/value – This study is a rare attempt to analyse the intended/planned and projected image elements of a multitude of tourism destinations simultaneously. Such a comparison is usually done on a case-by-case basis only. Thus, the insights of this study go beyond the limits of an individual destination enabling structural comparisons across neighbouring and nation-wide regions.

Coastal megaclast deposits are dominated by detrital particles larger than 1 m in size. These attract significant attention of modern researchers because of the needs of sedimentary rock nomenclature development and interpretation of storm and tsunami signatures on seashores. If so, finding localities that exhibit coastal megaclast deposits is an important task. Field studies do not offer a quick solution, and, thus, remote sensing tools have to be addressed. The application of the Google Earth Engine has permitted to find four new localities, namely Hondarribia in northern Spain (Biscay Bay), the Ponza Island in Italy (Tyrrhenian Sea), the Wetar Island in eastern Indonesia (Banda Sea), and the Humboldt o Coredo Bay at the Colombia/Panama border (eastern Pacific). In these localities, coastal megaclast deposits consisting of blocks (1–10 m in size) and some megablocks (>10 m in size) are delineated and preliminary described in regard to the dominant size of particles, package density, mode of occurrence, etc. The limitations of such virtual surveys of coastal megaclast deposits are linked to an insufficiently high resolution of satellite images, as well as ‘masking’ effects of vegetation cover and cliff shadows. However, these limitations do not diminish the importance of the Google Earth Engine for finding these deposits. Consideration of some tourism-related information, including photos captured by tourists and bouldering catalogues, facilitates search for promising areas for subsequent virtual surveying of megaclast distribution. It is also established that the Google Earth Engine permits quantitative analysis of composition of coastal megaclast deposits in some areas, as well as to register decade-long dynamics or stability of these deposits, which is important to interpret their origin. The current opportunities for automatic detection of coastal megaclast deposits seem to be restricted.

In the context of globalization, the sphere of tourism becomes more and more important, since it is one of the most profitable and dynamic branches of the world economy of the country. Tourism contributes to the growth of employment, accelerates the diversification of the economy, because this sphere covers more than 50 branches of the national economy, therefore the innovation of the tourist sphere should become its constant component. In addition, tourism not only preserves, but also develops the cultural potential of the country and the population, harmonize relations between different peoples and contributes to the friendly use of the environment. Indicators of its profitability indicate the importance of tourism for the development of economy, namely: 8% of world exports and 30% of world services sales, as well as annual growth of world tourist flows by 4-5%. However, Ukraine loses significantly in the competition, lagging behind the leading countries of the world in terms of development of tourist infrastructure and the quality of tourist services. Financial and economic crisis that has been continuing in recent years, the events associated with annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and anti-terrorist operation on the territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions had a negative impact on the tourism flows, the tourism structure and tourist opportunities of the country both on the domestic and the external tourism market. In addition, Ukrainians have recently received the possibility of visa-free travel to the countries of the European Union, which will also lead to the increase in outbound tourism, and a reduction in the entrance. In this regard, it is necessary to introduce innovations in the development of tourism in Ukraine in order to attract visitors. Innovation in tourism "involves developing an original approach, developing new ways to use existing resources while seeking new ones";. Typization of innovation in tourism is developed by Abernathy and Clark, who distinguish 4 types of innovations: regular, niche, revolutionary and architectural. Regular innovations refer to the continuous improvement of the quality of services, the improvement of personnel skills and productivity. Niches innovations usually change the structure of cooperation, but not basic knowledge and skills; they combine existing services in a new way. Revolutionary innovations are associated with the use of new technologies in firms, the development of new methods; they have a radical impact on the key knowledge and skills of the staff up to the appearance of new occupations in the sector. Architectural innovations change the structure, business model and rules in tourism; they create new events and objects that require reorganization, chang physical or institutional infrastructure, research and training facilities. One of the main directions of innovation is the development of sustainable tourism. Destination (tourist areas) are beginning to create a management system for tourism resources and use them in the planning of territorial development. Recently, it became clear that the directions of innovation in tourism are increasingly becoming a systemic nature, when tourism turns from the industry into a "public enterprise";, which involves a variety of institutional stakeholders: government, business, local communities, science and education. At the same time, the remarkable thing is that the more the system of tourism management varies from industrial to post-industrial, the greater the innovative potential has the sphere of tourism, the greater the extent of tourism shifts from mass to individualized. This is due to the smaller segmentation of the market and the emergence of many niche, specialized services and tourist products. There is adaptation of tourism infrastructure, buildings and equipment for the needs of such new, growing groups of tourists as children, the elderly and the disabled. The innovations in the tourism industry, according to Novikov V.S., “are the result of actions aimed at creating a new or changing existing tourist product, developing new markets, using advanced information and telecommunication technologies, improving the provision of tourist, transport and hotel services, creating strategic alliances for realization of tourist business, introduction of modern forms of organizational and managerial activity of tourist enterprises”. In general, tourism is a multi-vector industry, which can create some difficulties in introducing innovations. At the same time, certain areas of tourism activity are impossible without the use of innovative technologies, in particular, information and computer technologies. Effective administrative work of tourism enterprises involves the application of various facilities, as Ukrainian travel agencies are widely using the information sector, in the form of messages, and the virtual sector of travel in global networks. Studies conducted in the field of tourism demonstrate the &quot;consumer nature&quot; of information innovation, while tourism is not a producer in this field. According to preliminary estimates, the cost of the initiative tour operators in Ukraine for maintaining an on-line booking system is about 2% of the cost of services sold. Sales of entertainment and recreation tours provide about 3.3 million dollars. US annually spent money on developing, maintaining and filling in the information support system. Common directions of the use of innovative technologies in tourism are: mobile Internet, catalogs of electronic offers, on-line booking not only for retail agencies, but also directly for clients. Further development of innovation activity is the development of new ideas for promotion of tourist product, development of new tourist routes, availability of information to the consumer, software, etc.

Abstract Nature’s resources having a usability attribute are nature values – if they are able to provide for human demands that are being exploited. This article relates to the environmental potential of mining and post – mining areas as well as possibilities of its use in the development of tourisms and recreation. An original typology of the nature value and the assessment of the tourist usability of environment of chosen mining towns of the Rybnik Coal Area – Wodzisław Śląski, Radlin, Rydułtowy, and Pszów are presented in this work. The Rybnik Coal Area is situated in the southern Poland, in a south-west part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. A geological substratum consists of Carboniferous rocks with a hard coal layer exploited from the end of 18th century, but more intensively in the last half-century. In all of the researched towns, hard coal mining is still running and anthropogenic processes changing the environment are taking place. An inventory of natural resources was performed during the direct field work in the years 2010-2011. The nature values were catalogued in a typological way according to the elements of the environment from which they result, focusing on the mining character of the research areas. Therefore, geologic, geomorphologic, hydrologic and biotic (of flora and fauna) have been highlighted, while climatic values have been omitted intentionally due to the vast issue of the assessment of the bioclimatic zone potential. Additionally, natural and anthropogenic elements were distinguished in each group of the values. Due to a significant degree of anthropogenic transformations of the environment, the analysed area is characterised by low environmental attractiveness; tourism and recreation play a marginal role there. Among the nature values of the analysed towns, the geologic qualities are the most significant ones. Therefore, geotourism is the form of tourist activity suggested to revive the region. The greatest potential for the development of geotourism is shown by Pszów, Radlin, Rydułtowy. The development and popularisation of geoturism should be included in the planning documents of the towns mentioned above. In order to increase tourist movement, it is suggested to mark up so-called academic-didactic paths and to mark geotourist object with appropriate information signs and more importantly with the development of infrastructure serving tourism and recreation.

The article considers the development dynamics of approaches to the understanding the concept of “tourist destination” in the works of various authors, as well as notes the shortcomings taking into account the prevailing socio-economic conditions. The authors specify the notion of “tourist destination”. It can be any object (sociogeolocation, territory) from the tour operator catalogue, in other words it is a site in stable demand among tourists. The territory with the lack of sufficient infrastructure, high-qualified human resources, elements of security and an adequate level of management is able to be in demand due to active and passive image. The concept of “acting (real)” and “potential tourist destination” is distinguished. The former is sociogeolocation and currently in demand in tourists. Potential tourist destination is the territory possessing tourist potential (resources), which due to various reasons is not popular in tourists. The conditions for the formation of the acting tourist destination (Donetsk is a vivid example) are defined: transformation of tourist conditions into attractions, the improvement of the basic and subsidiary infrastructure, optimization of the management and organizational subsystems, and high-qualified staff. Political and social aspects are also important. The problems and prospects of forming acting (real) tourist destination in Donetsk are analyzed. The city has enough natural, cultural and historical resources. Climate, topography, and high level of landscaping are advantageous. There are 262 historical and cultural monuments, 140 museums and museum rooms, 3 national theatres, circus in the city. Biosocial and event resources are also presented. At the moment, Donetsk is a potential tourist destination, which has all the chances to become a real tourist destination.

SummarySubject and purpose of work: The main objective of the article is to recommend some solutions in the area of e-tourism which could be introduced by the local government in Wałbrzych as part of activities initiated in 2017 for the development of the Smart City concept.Materials and methods: The implementation of the objective required a detailed analysis and evaluation of the “Strategy for Sustainable Development of Wałbrzych City until 2020”as well as the key task areas of the Smart City Program Council set up in the city, including Task Teams implementing projects of smart urban solutions. In the course of the research, a literature review was also conducted to explore the ways of defining the concept of e-tourism.Results: As a result of the literature research, the authors emphasized different aspects (dimensions) of e-tourism and described the e-tourism model for tourist consumption. The analysis of the strategic municipal documents showed that they did not contain any direct references and plans regarding the development of activities in the area of e-tourism. The current study offers recommendations for the growth of e-tourism in Wałbrzych. Conclusions: In the context of the realisation of “Smart City for the city of Wałbrzych” program, the concept of e-tourism, according to the authors, is an opportunity for the development of tourism in the city and in the region. The catalogue of possible solutions is open and their implementation requires taking into account the needs of different groups of stakeholders, including people with disabilities and the elderly.

Background: The tourism industry beyond all reasonable doubt is not only one of the most rapidly growing industries in the globe but one of the largest employers generating an annual revenue of billions of dollars. However, in spite of that, the industry according to nascent studies has some profound negative socio-economic, political, cultural and environmental impacts on communities. For instance, the act of involving children in sexual activities by tourists has affected the children physically, mentally, emotionally, economically, socially and psychologically. Some have even died. Even though the precise number of victims of child sex tourism casualties and their circumstances is not scientifically well researched and documented, it is an indisputable fact that they are in millions. This lack of scholarly documentation, beyond reasoning has posed a great challenge to all concerned authorities. Thus, this research aims at addressing this gap. Purpose: The fundamental rationale for a systematic literature review is to examine the present scale and degree of the causes of child sex tourism, share knowledge to spark and inspire processes that will usher in rapid growth from all directions in the fight against the menace. Methodology: A systematic review of the literature using information collected from different sources was actuated. Google Search Engine was used to search these articles. During the search, numerous combinations of words and phrases were used to ensure that articles reflect the most recent knowledge and scholarly works. In essence, only peer-reviewed articles published after 2008 were selected except extract perceived to be of fundamental mileage to the study. However, articles published by dedicated international organizations working for the protection of children for years and have produced indefatigable knowledge in commercial sexual exploitation of the children were stealthily appraised. Results: Poverty, which is commonly cited, is not the sole justification for the commercial sexual exploitation of children, even though it contributes to an environment that may be a sequel to such exploitation. In sum, a range of other complex contributing factors includes consumerism, culture, economic disparities, social, political instability, environment, corruption, lack of reporting crimes, lack of and/or inadequate laws, poor enforcement, lack of interest, debt burden, structural adjustment programmes, practice of projecting women as subservient to men, discriminatory policies, poverty, natural calamities, lack of training, demand and supply, power imbalances, sex trade, family encouragement, philanthropic organizations, Internet access, crime and violence, transient workers, freedom of movement, domestic tourists, population expansion, child trafficking, individual, loss of communal farmlands; and porous borders. Conclusion: In conclusion, the causes of child sex tourism can be simply pooled and catalogued into social, economic, political, natural, technological, individual and legal causes. Keywords: Child, child sex tourism, perpetrators, survivors, tourist, tourism.

Eco-projects have a high capacity to harmonize relations between three major sustainable development components: economical, ecological and social. The use of project management mechanisms provide opportunities for stakeholder partnership in addressing environmental problems. An essential part of this process is a shared vision of the possible scenarios for spatial development, team-based approach, techniques and procedures of eco-project implementation, along with experience of engaging with the crew. All of the eco-project management aspects mentioned above are the purpose of this work. We intended to summarise the case study that students from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv Earth science and geomorphology Department have been doing as a part of their curriculum "Ecoproject management and international cooperation in the field of nature protection". The case study raises the problem of fragmented, irrelevant, unreliable or missing information on natural heritage and green areas, which are a foundation of recreational activities and natural-cognitive tourism. The problem has been selected due to COVID-19 pandemic that has been raising awareness of local tourist attractions, environmental security, sustainable development and environment protection. Essentially, creating a comprehensive natural heritage catalogue and guides is the first step towards local tourism promotion and reaching local sustainable development goals. The Project's vision is to provide a product that offers free, clear and descriptive GIS-based materials on natural heritage and green areas of Kyiv. The mission is to design and publish information materials on natural heritage and green areas using available GIS applications. Final Natural-Cognitive Tourist Map of the Holosiivsky District of Kyiv is an outcome of the work.

Over the last 60 years, the development of tourism in Spain has produced an unprecedented occupation of the territory. Urban growth, hotels and infrastructures have transformed much of the natural environment. This phenomenon has irreversibly altered conditions of regions with great landscape value, putting their cultural heritage at risk. Yet, the campsite is a model of tourist settlement based on shared living in the open natural space. It promotes minimal and temporary interventions in the territory, by means of transportable accommodations with precise occupations of place, leaving a slight footprint. Therefore, architecture contributes to affording the order and services that these individual artifacts cannot provide by themselves. In terms of slight land occupation and natural qualities preservation, the campsite has proven to be one of the most responsible tourist models. It is an opportunity for the future: a resource for landscape integration and local dynamics reactivation. We present a set of architectural actions for the integration of campsites in cultural landscapes along the Catalan coast. These are recommendations catalogued by means of a diagnosis tool that proposes strategies at different levels, from enclosure to lodgings. Focusing on end-users, this research fosters cultural identity preservation and responsible communal living in nature.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to characterize the international tourists who visit a cultural event, such as the Oruro Carnival (Bolivia), that is catalogued as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Design/methodology/approach To achieve this purpose, a segmentation is made based on the combination of two theoretical models used and contrasted in similar research: the model of McKercher (2002), based on the cultural motivations to go to a destination, and that of Poria et al. (2003), based on the emotional perception of the visitor in relation to the heritage they visit. Findings Four types of tourists are thus identified: alternative, cultural, emotional and patrimonial. Likewise, the research includes an assessment of the most relevant tourist attributes linked to the Oruro Carnival, which is much more positive among international tourists with greater cultural motivation and emotional bonding. Originality/value The principal originality factor and innovation is analysing the cultural motivations and the emotional perception of the visitor in relation to the heritage they visit.

The cultural heritage of a region, be it a highly visited one or not, is a formidable asset for the promotion of its tourism. In many places around the world, an important part of this cultural heritage has been catalogued by initiatives backed by governments and organisations. However, as of today, most of this data has been mostly unknown, or of difficult access, to the general public. In this paper, we present research that aims to leverage this data to promote tourism. Our first field of application focuses on the French Pyrenees. In order to achieve our goal, we worked on two fronts: (i) the ability to export this data from their original databases and data models to well-known open data platforms; and (ii) the proposition of an open-source algorithm and framework capable of recommending a sequence of cultural heritage points of interests (POIs) to be visited by tourists. This itinerary recommendation approach is original in many aspects: it not only considers the user preferences and popularity of POIs, but it also integrates different contextual information about the user as well as the relevance of specific sequences of POIs (strong links between POIs). The ability to export the cultural heritage data as open data and to recommend sequences of POIs are being integrated in a first prototype.

Purpose. Assessment of contradictions existing in the environment of researchers regarding effective models of management among the tourism sector in regions, and especially the management of tourism promotion, and the author's attempt to develop a ROT model in the DMC formula as a model for increasing the effectiveness of the organization. Method. The method of research included desk research of written resources, including ROT statuses (analysis of the structure of their aims) and in-depth analysis of data acquired during the author’s own questionnaire research. The conclusions were drawn with the use of the deductive method, comparative analysis, and – to simplify the presentation of problems – the reduction method, as well as the authors’ own observations. Findings. The study revealed the possibility of changing the ROT business model using the DMC formula, which could be crucial in assessing the effectiveness of the organization. Research and conclusions limitations. The study involved 16 ROTs, and survey research data were obtained from 15 organizations. The analysis allowed, however, to notice and outline regularities in the ROT activity features and a catalogue of conditions in their environment affecting the efficiency of functioning after transformation into the DMC. Practical implications. The research diagnoses the possibilities and conditions of changes in the ROT model of action using the DMC formula in the opinion of the organization's stakeholders. Originality. The analysis and identification of the catalogue of conditions in the environment of ROTs, in the context of tourism policy issues, system of organization of tourism and the behaviour of organizations, focused on business activities. The ROT model of operation in the DMC formula. Type of paper. The article presents the results of empirical research.

The activity of ethnographic and artistic museums of the Galician Hutsulshchyna, their contribution to the development of the ethno-tourism sphere of Ivano-Frankivsk oblast are described in the article. The development of museologyin the Precarpathian region in the context of ethno-tourism activity is regulated by the regional comprehensive program “Culture of Ivano-Frankivsk region”. Priority directions in museum work are: preservation of historical monuments of the region; the latest information technologies introduction into the activity of museums; enlargement of the material, technical and restoration bases; promotion of the international cooperation of museums; realization of repair and restoration work; provision of scientific acquisition of museum funds; activization of publishing activity: albums, catalogs, booklets, guides, scientific collections; usage of new information technologies in accounting and cataloging. The Hutsul topicality is leading in the museology of the Precarpathian region. The network of museums on the territory of the Galician Hutsulshchyna is the most important for ethno-tourism in Ivano-Frankivsk region. In most cases, they are included in the tour operator's activity and constitute logical chains of tourist excursions and routes and are centers for providing services in the region. There are over thirty state and public museums that attract visitors in this region. Employees of these establishments carry out excursions providing ethnographic information about the region. The focus is on the characteristics of work of the most famous museums in the Galician Hutsulshchyna. Particularly noticeable is the activity of the National Museum of Folk Art of Hutsulshchyna and Pokuttia named after Yo. Kobrynsky in Kolomyia, which is the only Ukrainian institution of this type, listed in the Royal Encyclopedia of Great Britain as a museum of world masterpieces. The author states that the authentic color of life of local inhabitants is brightly represented in the museum institutions of this historical and ethnographic region. A number of museums of the Galician Hutsulshchyna provide high-quality cognitive tourism services, because they have preserved customs and traditions of crafts and handicrafts and everyday ritual activity. ‘Build Memories’ is a collage series that explores the layered historic and geographic landscape of Istanbul and Thessaloniki. The work focuses on the shared Byzantine and Ottoman past of the two cities, which is interlinked with the multicultural lives and transcultural memories of their inhabitants. The collaging of images of popular culture sourced from tourist catalogues of Greece and Turkey becomes in the work a strategy for the transformation of collective memories into a composite landscape. The collages literally build memory as a transcultural space deposited in the urban fabric.

The aim of this dissertation was to diagnose the tendency of changes observed in the forms of information and promotion used by agricultural service providers and the sources of information preferred by tourists who rested in rural areas in 2001-2019. Moreover, the point of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of sources of information and promotion on rural facilities used by service providers in agritourism. The empiric studies handled by the author of the article as well as by other researches, data from different institutions and literature formed the basis for this article. A comparative analysis was used to perform the research. It should be noticed that, in every period of the study, the forms of promotion used by agricultural service providers failed to fully meet tourists’ needs and expectations. In 2003, service providers believed in printed materials such as leaflets, pamphlets and catalogues as a form of advertisement and promotion, whereas tourists chose their destination to stay and relax at a rural facility relying on word-of-mouth marketing from friends, family and acquaintances. In 2012 and 2019 both parties pointed out the website as a prime source of information and the recommendations of friends and family in second place. In every empiric period, exchanges, fairs, advertising in catalogues and pamphlets as well as information in press releases, adverts on the radio or commercials in television were more important for service providers than for tourists. In order to meet tourists’ expectations, farmers and village residents should take care of the standard and design of their websites. To gain knowledge and necessary help on that matter, service providers may get in touch with agricultural advisory services or representatives of agritourism associations.

Purpose. To analyze using the system of official statistics in studying tourism in cross-border areas in Poland. The additional purpose is analysis of the evolution of the system in terms of changes in environment and needs. Method. Method of description, critical and comparative analyses. The system of official statistics was described from a subjective, objective and territorial perspective. Documents, legal acts, publications and statistical research results were catalogued, analysed and compared in terms of their use in studies on cross-border tourism, particularly taking into account the time after Poland joined the Schengen area. Findings. A synergy of two objective subsystems of the official statistics system becomes essential, i.e. tourism statistics and cross-border statistics. When Poland joined the Schengen area, the role of cross-border statistics increased. New studies and publications appeared. Five out of sixteen Euroregions were studied and all borderlands, except for the Polish-Lithuanian borderland. The achievements of official statistics in cross-border tourism are difficult to use because of the inconsistent delimitation of cross-border areas and the incompatibility of studies regarding the territorial, time and objective aspects. Research and conclusion limitations. In the work, only the system of official statistics in Poland was studied, particularly taking into account the time after Poland joined the Schengen area. In the context of cross-border tourism, it would be valuable to complete the studies with the statistical systems of neighbouring countries. Practical implications. The study results will be useful in all analyses on the development of cooperation and cross-border tourism in Poland. They will help to indicate the directions of further development and a possible modification of cross-border statistics and tourism statistics. Originality. For the first time, an attempt has been made to reach all possible information of the system of official statistics available and present the information in a systemic, chronological and comprehensive way. Type of paper. Review-empirical work.

Quality costs represent financial result of management decision in system of total quality management. The assignment to recognize these costs in management information system and evaluate them belongs to the accounting. Financial reporting presented to management, is oriented to the quality improvement, or on the present consequences of decisions on keeping the same quality level. For creating methodological basis of including these costs, the accounting department should ensure relevant information from the surrounding (outer aspects), especially from the process and activities in the business system (inner aspects). Recognizing the interests and needs of quality management as well as ISO standards, the catalogue on quality costs is being created in accordance with information requests. Therefore, the certification on ISO standards requires reorganization of accounting information system, which has to ensure relevant information for managing costs, which is the subject to this research.

The pelagic macroalgae finches of the Sargassum genus in the Caribbean Sea currently represent a very natural problem due to their negative impact on the tourism industry, fishing industry, the environment and society in general. This work presents an above report of Sargassum that occurred on the north western coast of the Cuban archipelago in March 2019. The macroalgae species identified in the tidal zone were Sargassum fluitans and S. natans, and the specific geographic area where the impact of the upheaval occurred was from the west of Matan-zas bay to Mariel bay. The finches of these macroalgae were cataloged with a moderate magnitude compared to other reports in the Mexican Caribbean and in the Dominican Republic. This order of magnitude was cataloged based on its covered area of 169.3 km and its distribution along the coast in large patches, but very fragmented, despite the prevailing winds from the first quadrant (from north to east) during this period. Other events of this type reported in Cuba and the Caribbean region are taken up and discussed. Keywords: Caribbean Sea, Sargassum fluitans, Sargassum natans, Cuba.

<p class="Abstract"><em>Gijón, also known as Xixón, is an important city that rivals Oviedo, the historical capital of the Autonomous Region and Principality of Asturias (Spain), in historical demographic and economic terms. It has traditionally been a port and, more recently, an industrial city, which experienced very rapid population growth and with little planning. After the industrial crisis of the 80s, the city wanted to become a tourist location more than an industrial harbor. Both its privileged location and the historical urban heritage that still remain are corner stones to make this change possible. However, the late and strict legislation (improvised to protect the last remains of a previously uncontrolled development) impeded a necessary urban re-design in order to shelter the new touristic supplies. This paper proposes some urban solutions to selectively modify the catalogue according with the cultural and touristic potentials of the city. These solutions were agreed by the working group set up by Gijón City Council and ERDU (Estudio de Renovación y Desarrollos Urbanos -Urban Renovation and Development Studio).</em></p><em><em><br /></em></em>

Learning networks are highlighted in contemporary literature as a means of leveraging resources to create and sustain competitive advantage in micro-firms. Despite their importance in the context of micro-firm development, micro-firm learning, learning processes and networks have previously been neglected as an area of academic study, and there is limited evidence of successful cooperative strategies in this environment. The aim of the research discussed in this paper is to catalogue micro-firm learning criteria in a cooperative network environment and to propose a framework of cooperative learning for that milieu. Adopting an action research methodology, primary research was carried out on a Tourism Learning Network (TLN) initiative. Cooperative network activity and individual learning were observed and documented by the researchers over two years. Based on the research findings, the authors propose a framework of cooperative learning that offers insight into how network structures, support and interrelationships may facilitate learning process completion in the micro-firm environment.

Research background. The biodiversity of lakes makesthem important as natural resource fortourism. Lakes all over the world are used as a resource for ecotourism, natural tourism, leisure tourism andtheyattract millions of tourists. The useof lakes for sports, entertainment, swimming, fishing, etc.is of greatimportance to the public. There are 2833 lakes larger than 0.5 ha in Lithuania. Utena County has 35% shareof all Lithuanian lakes larger than 0.5 ha. So this is a very important region of lake tourism development inLithuania.Researchaim.The object of the researchisbigger than 0.5 ha lakes of UtenaCounty, and theresearchaim is to analyse lake tourism development in Utena County.Methods.Scientific literature, web sites, legislation on lake tourism and recreational activities on thelakes and in the lakeshore, ArcGis software programme were used as references for writing the article. There are 1001 lakes, bigger than 0.5 ha, in UtenaCounty. Since thereare a great number of lakes, inorder to distinguish their patterns, lakes were grouped into 7 area classes: 0.5–1 ha; 1.1–5 ha; 5.1–10 ha;10.1–50 ha; 50.1–100 ha; 100.1–500 ha; >500 ha. Articles distinguish the most important criteria of lakestourism development: lakes morphometric parameters, lakes accessibility of roads, landscape structure oflakes. The marphometric parameters, used in the present paper, were taken from the Catalogue of LithuaniaSSR lakes (1964), while bathymetric parameters were taken from list with bathymetric data (1964). Todetermine the accessibility of lakes, ArcGis10 software was used. It was worked with GDB10LT database(updated in January, 2008). The data of lakes was taken from layer “Areas”. This layer of lakes was re-covered with layers of “Roads” and “Railways”. Seeking to assess the accessibility of lakes by roads ofvarious types, search for roads was implemented at the radius of 10, 50, 100, 200 and 500 metres aroundlakes. The paper sought to determine the landscape structure of Utena County lakes. The distribution offorests, swamps, grasslands, residential areas and other landscapes in lake shores wasanalysed. Theselandscapes wereanalysedin buffers, drawn at the radius of 500 m around lakes. Forests, swamps, residentialareas and other landscapes were taken from GDB10LT layer “Locations”. After drawing the buffers of500m radius around lakes, the area of forests, swamps, residential areas and other landscapes wascalculated.Results.The research data shows thatthe mostcommonlakesin UtenaCountyare small lakes, lessthan 50 hectares (881 lakes). There are 29 lakes larger than 500 ha in Lithuania. UtenaCounty has 69% shareof all Lithuanian lakes larger than 500 ha. Itisvery important for development of recreational activitiesbecause the bigger the lake–the greater the opportunity to deploy it.Utena County has 374 lakes (37%)where you can use self-propelled boating means (area more than 10 hectares) and 60 lakes (6%) (larger than200 hectares) where youcan use more high-powered boats. The water motorcycles can be used just in theAlausasLake.Based on the morphometric lake parametres–area and average depth, lakes, suitable for pikes(45% of all the lakes explored), crucians (36%) and breams, pike perches (18%) predominate. There are all types of roads near bigger than 0.5 haUtena County lakes at a distance of 500m–motorways, asphalted roads, gravelled roads, unsurfaced roads and railways. The research data shows thatgravelled roads (30% of all lakes can be reached by these roads) and unsurfaced roads (41%) predominate. There is a tendency that the bigger a lake is the greater variety of road types within a radius of 500 m it has.Forests, grasslands, populated areas and swamps are nearby the lakes of all area classes at a distanceof 500 m. With the increase of a lake area the number of lakes on the shores of which there are swamps, areas covered by grasslands increase, the number of forests decreases. Nearb the smaller lakes the biggerpercentageof the shore territory is covered with forests and other landscapes. The typical Utena district lake(>0.5 ha) in a 500 m radius from its shore will have the following landscape structure: 60% of grasslands,36% of forests, 3% of populated areas, 0.1% ofswamps and 1% of other landscapes. Thelakes near theforest are important for recreation. With the increasing size of lakes, the areas on the shores of lakes coveredby forests and grasslands also increase.Populated areas are near all bigger than 500 ha lakes and the majority of lakes of other classes. Thereare populated areas having fewer than 20 people near all the lakes bigger than 500 ha, towns are nearby 7%of such lakes.Almost 90% of UtenaCounty tourism enterprises are not further than 500 meters from thelakes. Tourism enterprises clusters are located at the lakes of Alausas, Rubikiai, Sartai.Conclusions.The research data shows that lake area, accessibility by roads and lake landscapestructure are important factorsfor lake tourism development. In large lakes there are possibilities to organizeboating with motorized or non-motorized boats, sailing, swimming, fishing, diving, etc. Recreationalactivities on large lakes are more diverseand attractive than the ones small lakes. Large lakes of UtenaCountyare better accessible of different types of road. Large lakes landscape structure is more diverse andattractive. The small UtenaCounty lakes are more suitable for the development of eco-tourismand largelake (area>50ha)–for mass tourism (just 10%of Utena County lakes). Keywords:laketourism, lakes’morphometric parameters, lakes’accessibilitybyroads, landscapestructure of lakes.

Abstract. Alexandria is the second biggest city in Egypt as regards population, is a key economic area in northern Africa and has a very important tourist activity. Historical catalogues indicate that it was severely affected by a number of tsunami events. In this work we assess the tsunami hazard by running numerical simulations of tsunami impact in Alexandria through the Worst-case Credible Tsunami Scenario Analysis (WCTSA). We identify three main seismic sources: the Western Hellenic Arc (WHA – reference event AD 365, Mw = 8.5), the Eastern Hellenic Arc (EHA – reference event 1303, Mw = 8.0) and the Cyprus Arc (CA – hypothetical scenario earthquake with Mw = 8.0), inferred from the tectonic setting and from historical tsunami catalogues. All numerical simulations are carried out by means of the code UBO-TSUFD, developed and maintained by the Tsunami Research Team of the University of Bologna. Relevant tsunami metrics are computed for each scenario and then used to build aggregated fields such as the maximum flood depth and the maximum inundation area. We find that the case that produces the most relevant flooding in Alexandria is the EHA scenario, with wave heights up to 4 m. The aggregate fields are used for a building vulnerability assessment according to a methodology developed in the frame of the EU-FP6 project SCHEMA and further refined in this study, based on the adoption of a suitable building damage matrix and on water inundation depth. It is found that in the districts of El Dekhila and Al Amriyah, to the south-west of the port of Dekhila over 12 000 buildings could be affected and hundreds of them could incur in consequences ranging from important damage to total collapse. It is also found that in the same districts tsunami inundation covers an area of about 15 km2 resulting in more than 150 000 residents being exposed.

Farm-sale, also known as direct sale, provides major opportunities to farmers in the future. This kind of sale is of increasing popularity in Europe, but farmers have to be familiar with the regulations concerning processing and sales. Mainly small and medium farmers prefer direct sale. In this activity, they must compete with an increasing number of hypermarkets, supermarkets and wholesale markets. When talking about direct sale, it means that farmers sell their products directly to customers. There are more options: (i) sale in their own shop, (ii) through a catalogue and (iii) delivery to restaurants and shops. It has to be mentioned that the development of special local products means the products representing a common local value and principally those that can be associated with a specific village due to their historical heritage or tradition. There is no standard or official definition for special local products that includes all the possible factors. Efforts of marketing and rural development experts are needed to identify and market these special products to the appropriate consumers. Meanwhile it has to be noticed that, mainly in Europe, the definition and the possibilities of product regulation concerning geographical origin, are clearly defined and well-known. However, the &ldquo;protection of geographical origin&rdquo; is not the same issue as &ldquo;special local products&rdquo; mentioned above. In a wider sense, these can be described from a marketing point of view as &ldquo;local product, common product&rdquo; that interconnect and integrate villages, people and approaches, but are not regulated and protected legally. These products mentioned above reach the consumer in relatively small quantities, through direct sale, and they are often attached to the services of rural tourism. The local products are also developed to ensure high quality products for the consumer or to attract tourists. People can be proud of them since they cannot be bought anywhere else. Advisers are also helping farmers choose the right sales channels to diversify their marketing activities.

The main aim of this article is to present a heritage action protocol based on the application of photogrammetric and LiDAR acquisitions, a catalogue of flora and fauna, archeological research, and 3D virtualization for the integrated recovery of a rural cultural heritage site located in the Alto Guadiato Valley of Cordoba, Spain. This joint multidisciplinary action focusing on a common heritage objective has resulted in a comprehensive and innovative action: the virtualization of an 800-hectare multitemporal archeological landscape. The results may be of interest to researchers, educators, and tourism agents, or for the dissemination of scientific knowledge, among other applications. The protocol of actions implemented in the framework of this project can be replicated in sites with similar characteristics, particularly rural areas with well-preserved landscapes that have not been investigated. The main result of the project is the preservation of geomorphological features using remote sensing technologies and the creation of a virtual lookout for this historical and natural landscape (GuadiatVR), which is a very uncommon outcome within the virtualization of historical landscapes. The lookout can be downloaded from Google Play on IOS.

Purpose Entrepreneurship in the rural hospitality and tourism sector (RHT) has received wide attention in the past decade. However, a systematic review on this topic is currently lacking. This study aims to track the progress of the RHT and entrepreneurship literature by examining the various thematic research areas, identifying the research gaps and forecasting avenues of future research on the topic. Design/methodology/approach This paper catalogs and synthesizes the body of literature from the year 2000–2020 using a systematic literature review methodology. After discussing a brief history of RHT and entrepreneurship, the current study presents a review of 101 research articles. Findings The review highlights that RHT and entrepreneurship have received relatively limited attention from entrepreneurship journals. The content analysis revealed different gaps and limitations in the understanding of entrepreneurship in RHT, including a predominance of qualitative studies with limited theoretically-grounded and generalizable empirical studies. Furthermore, a high concentration of studies is from European countries. Six main thematic research areas were identified, namely, barriers and enablers, the roles of an entrepreneur, women in RHT, influencers of firm performance, innovation and value creation and methodological commonalities. The review also advances an RHT entrepreneurship ecosystem framework to summarize the findings. Originality/value Six promising research avenues are outlined based on the six themes identified. The suggested research questions draw from allied literature on small and medium businesses, innovation, women entrepreneurship and institutions to encourage the interdisciplinary cross-pollination of ideas. The findings are summarized in a novel research framework.

AbstractThe tourism generated by the observation of bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus is one of the main tourist attractions in the El Morro estuary, Guayas-Ecuador. However, the lack of characterization of fungi in the aquatic environment as main infectious sources in Tursiops truncatus, generates concern about this population, before this is necessary the fungal characterization of the aquatic environment in the El Morro estuary. For this purpose, water samples were collected during the months of January and February 2016, to culture fungi in Sabouraud Agar with dextrose at 30˚C temperature for three days; later, isolates of strains were made for morphological and molecular identification. The morphological identification determined 17.50% of species as potential pathogenic agent, among them Aspergillus fumigatus, Blastomyces dermatitidis and Candida albicans. Through molecular analysis using the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) section, Rhizopus oryzae, a species reported as a causative agent of infection in dolphins, was identified. Although Aspergillus carbonarius and Heteroacanthella acanthothysa were detected, these species are not catalogued as dolphin pathogens. This study allows to conclude that part of the fungal diversity of the water of the El Morro estuary, which represents a potential risk to the health of the dolphins that inhabit this area.

Abstract:This study introduces the oldest photographs of Seoul’s ruins, which have been recycled for more than a century in a wide variety of print sources, such as travelogues, postcards, museum catalogs, and guidebooks. Regardless of the medium, the aesthetic, disciplinary, and cultural biases practiced by the first generation of globe-trotters, diplomats, and commercial photographers to arrive in the Korean peninsula resulted in the mass distribution of the most “picturesque” monuments, such as Buddhist art and architecture, palaces, and fortress gates targeting the “tourist gaze.” By analyzing a select number of stock images of architectural landscapes, which have served as the “scenic” backdrop for framing “native types,” currently part of museum collections and photographic archives, the article will illustrate how such exoticized and romanticized visions of the conquered “Hermit Kingdom” trapped in time and space have continued to impact the trajectory of heritage management policies and the hierarchical ranking system of national treasures and famous places in postwar South Korea.

&ldquo; After the death of the last witnesses the memory of the Holocaust must not be left to historians alone, now is the time for works of art&rdquo; Aharon Appelfeld. This study focuses on the role and contribution of monuments to educating about Holocaust commemoration in Israel. Holocaust monuments are located throughout Israel, from north to south, and over the years memorial centers have been added, which contain additional monuments commemorating the story of the specific place and/or personal stories. Many of the latter have original displays from the period of the Holocaust and, according to definitions that will be presented below, these too can be defined as &ldquo;monuments&rdquo; and their place as a commemorative site. Commemoration of the Holocaust is an important value in the education of the young generation, as a lesson and as a call to always remember that which happened. The educational system has a very significant role in providing instruction on the memory of the Holocaust and it must teach this complex topic using interesting visual means such as monuments, which have a meaningful role in the story of the Holocaust, similar to journals, letters, films, and drawings. The study explores the role of monuments as meaningful, reliable, and historically valid sources of information, which serve as a visual text for Holocaust instruction. This is with the purpose of examining the meaning of monuments as a source of information in learning about the Holocaust. The research method: Qualitative research based on observations of a case study consisting of an educational program dealing with remembrance based on monuments and on a catalogue of monuments. The catalogue, built specifically for this study, is unique in its scope and categorizes and charts monuments from different locations throughout Israel, providing a venue for educational activities studying the memory of the Holocaust and its commemoration. The research findings show that there is at present no organized study program encouraging schoolchildren&rsquo;s visits to monuments in Israel, and these remain abandoned, with no visitors. In many cases they are displayed in open public spaces, and those passing by do not stop to learn their story. Hence, the contribution of the educational program based on the catalogue and on the visit to the monuments will have an effect on all learners, encouraging learning based on experience, i.e., learning outside the classroom. The program blurs the distinction between social classes and sectors and lets each and every student embark on a journey that includes touring, learning, experiencing, and leading.
