Little is known regarding the factors that are important for tournament preparation in golf. Eighteen elite amateur golfers and 12 expert coaches/practitioners were interviewed to identify the self-regulatory and task-specific strategies important for tournament preparation. Thematic analysis revealed four themes: understanding tournament preparation, planning, tournament preparation strategies, and self-reflection. Players used specific strategies to optimize their physiological and psychological state, develop course strategy, and structure and implement preparatory routines. The findings of this study have implications for coaches and players in developing a system for preparation, and could provide a framework to improve coaching curricula and guide further research.

The use of football programs as a vehicle for social change has increased exponentially in recent decades. This article utilizes Goffman’s sociology as a framework to approach the Homeless World Cup (HWC). Firstly, we examine how the participants interviewed refer to their journeys and how, throughout the HWC’s preparation, they were able to positively reconfigure their self-presentation. Secondly, we consider the frame of repeated defeats for participants whose expectations of success within this tournament were not fulfilled, reinforcing previously held feelings of stigma. Thirdly, the symbolic distance between winning and losing teams is discussed. Finally, we propose some reflections about the tournament’s format in order to remove, or at least reduce, negative experiences.

This is the third article in a series of articles reflecting on implementing the Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) Board Game "Scythe" in an educational setting. It reflects on the evolution of a Game-Based Learning (GBL) approach teaching fundamental management methods and training 21st Century Skills. The first iteration of Scythe as the board game platform to train and educate students in OODA-Loop and decision support techniques was planned as a three-day on-premise workshop in February 2020. The kick-off was in November 2019 and was followed by a long self-study preparation phase. It transformed into a fully distributed learning event on short notice due to the advent of COVID-19. The second iteration, from November 2020 to March 2021, was a four-month closely supervised distributed learning experience featuring SWOT-Analysis, Kanban-Board, Scrum and other agile management methods next to the OODA-Loop. These two iterations had one thing in common. The board game Scythe was used as an analogue board game, and a Slack Workspace was used to submit pictures of the physical board game to reflect on the current situation. In the second iteration, Steam licences for the digital version of Scythe (Digital Scythe) were provided to students as a decision support tool. From November 2021 to February 2022, the third iteration implemented Digital Scythe entirely. Therefore, the final tournament and highlight of the learning experience were also fully digital, with new challenges for facilitation. This complete digitalisation also provided unique learning opportunities, particularly concerning 21st-century skills. Overall, this new seminar prototype was a huge success, and the demand for this kind of learning experience looks pretty high. It emphasises virtualisation using the popular gaming platform Steam. This article also applies a framework for distributed wargaming.

Understanding of the behaviours important for preparation preceding golf tournaments and before/after each round is limited. Self-regulatory processes including planning, self-monitoring, and reflection are important for sports performance and may be important for golf tournament preparation. In this thesis, the tournament preparation behaviours of golfers were described and used to develop a tournament preparation framework (TPF) and corresponding self-report instrument (TPF-SR). In study one, 18 golfers and 12 coaches/practitioners were interviewed to determine the behaviours important for golf tournament preparation. Participants reported that specific behaviours to optimise psychological and physiological states, develop course strategy, and structure preparatory routines were important for tournament preparation. In study two, 36 content experts participated in a two-round Delphi to score the importance of 48 items (behaviours) using a 5-point Likert-type scale. Consensus (i.e., 67% agreement) was reached for 46 items and these were used to develop the TPF. In study three, the TPF-SR instrument was developed, and its validity assessed by comparing the level of agreement between 18 golfers’ self-report administration of the instrument and multimethod observation/interviews. Comparison of endorsement rates for both measures showed good agreement. For the fourth study, golfers were observed in-situ and interviewed before/during a tournament to determine their endorsement of items from the TPF-SR. Linear and non-linear analytical models were developed to compare golfers’ item endorsement with their World Amateur Golf Ranking to evaluate the discriminate validity of the TPF-SR. Golfers’ endorsement of items relating to planning, self-monitoring, reflection, and task-specific strategies such as performing practice rounds was shown to discriminate between those of different rankings. The TPF provides information for the refinement of golf learning environments and guidance for the development of individualised player preparation. Further, a TPF-SR instrument that displays suitable measurement properties allows for detailed tracking of behaviours for golfers of different participation levels.
