Grazia Deledda, insignita del Premio Nobel per la letteratura nel 1926, è stata generalmente considerata una delle voci maggiori della scrittura al femminile di primo Novecento, sospesa tra Verismo e Decadentismo e spesso tacciata di regionalismo. Tuttavia la critica italiana e nordamericana più recente ha cominciato a sottolineare la rilevanza della narrativa deleddiana nel discorso sul moderno. Il romanzo "Dopo il divorzio", generalmente trascurato dalla critica, rappresenta un caso esemplare della riflessione deleddiana sulla crisi del moderno 'sub specie Sardiniae' per la sua tormentata vicenda editoriale. Pubblicato dapprima nel 1902, all’apice di una rovente polemica pluridecennale sull’introduzione del divorzio in Italia, "Dopo il divorzio" appare poi in una traduzione inglese corredata di alcune significative modifiche nel 1905, e infine in una seconda versione italiana nel 1920 con il titolo di "Naufraghi in porto". L’analisi delle varianti di carattere strutturale e semantico alla luce della critique génétique dimostrerà che il percorso seguito dall’autrice nella geografia culturale dell’Italia post-unitaria si snoda lungo la dialettica tra margine e centro che definisce la poliedrica identità del modernismo italiano. Inoltre "Dopo il divorzio", profondamente radicato nel paesaggio sardo dei più noti romanzi deleddiani, emerge come opus in fieri del moderno attraverso un dialogo intertestuale con le maggiori espressioni contemporanee della riflessione sull’umorismo, da "Le rire" (1900) di Bergson, a "Der Witz" di Freud (1905) al "Saggio sull’umorismo" di Pirandello (1908). La lettura di "Dopo il divorzio" quale work in progress a colloquio con le teorie sull’umorismo di primo Novecento sottolinea l’appartenenza di Grazia Deledda al modernismo europeo non a dispetto, bensì grazie al punto d’osservazione privilegiato offertole dalla insularità sarda. L’analisi di "Dopo il divorzio" nel suo percorso testuale e nella sua rilevanza extratestuale rivela dunque come Grazia Deledda, una scrittrice spesso stigmatizzata per le sue radici regionali «minori», abbia aperto la letteratura italiana alla riflessione sui più inquietanti elementi del modernismo europeo.

L’articolo intende tracciare un quadro della partecipazione italiana al dibattito sull’architettura del primo Settecento europeo a partire dal diretto coinvolgimento di personalità emergenti del panorama architettonico italiano nel processo di divulgazione delle fonti e dei Trattati di architettura in Gran Bretagna e dalla documentazione relativa alla attività del fiorentino Alessandro Galilei autore di un Trattato di architettura civile redatto in lingua italiana e in lingua inglese. La redazione di traduzioni in lingua inglese delle fonti classiche dell’architettura italiana curate da taluni ‘impenditori’ illuminati del sapere scientifico oltre la Manica all’alba di un fenomeno importante come il Neopalladianesimo inglese è la premessa indispensabile al radicamento e alla diffusione, anche a scopo di studio, della grammatica architettonica classica e alla pratica frequente del Grand Tour.

Changhen ge 长恨歌 (1995) è il capolavoro dell’autrice contemporanea Wang Anyi, e segue una ragazza di Shanghai, Wang Qiyao, da studentessa fino alla morte prematura, in una continua lotta per restare a galla in una società in costante cambiamento. Il romanzo copre un arco temporale di quasi quarant’anni, sfiorando a malapena alcuni degli eventi più monumentali della storia moderna cinese. Dopo essersi aggiudicato numerosi riconoscimenti, ad anni dalla sua uscita, Changhen ge guadagna finalmente notorietà a livello internazionale grazie alla pubblicazione di diverse traduzioni; tra queste, l’inglese Song of Everlasting Sorrow (2008), e l’italiana La canzone dell’eterno rimpianto (2011).
Attraverso un’analisi contrastiva delle due traduzioni, l’obiettivo dell’elaborato è osservare e rilevare, se presenti, eventuali differenze sistematiche nell’approccio alla traduzione di narrativa cinese. Nello specifico, lo studio punta a far luce su possibili tendenze strategiche nella traduzione dal cinese in inglese e in italiano e confrontarle.
Al fine dell’analisi, sono stati selezionati due capitoli di Changhen ge in base alle loro caratteristiche testuali e stilistiche e al loro contenuto. A seguito di una lettura approfondita dei tre testi alla ricerca di caratteristiche testuali e differenze, l’analisi si è concentrata su diverse aree di interesse, spaziando da strategie e tendenze traduttive più superficiali a elementi e aspetti più culturo-specifici, nonché alcune peculiarità linguistiche e discorsive del cinese. Da un lato, l’analisi contrastiva ha evidenziato varie differenze tra i due approcci traduttivi, specialmente per ciò che concerne tendenze deformanti a livello strutturale, testuale e coesivo. D’altra parte, tuttavia, sono emerse molte similarità nell’osservazione delle strategie impiegate per elementi culturo-specifici e alcuni aspetti linguistici e discorsivi.

La presente ricerca si colloca nel campo della traduzione audiovisiva, poiché riguarda il linguaggio filmico inglese. In particolare, lo studio si focalizzerà sul ruolo dei vocativi presenti in alcune opere cinematografiche. Il lavoro sarà dapprima eseguito sui dialoghi della versione originale e, successivamente, in quelli doppiati in italiano e in tedesco.
I tre film che compongono il Corpus sono usciti negli anni ’90 e sono ambientati in epoca vittoriana: Jane Eyre, Swept from the Sea, The Piano. Le forme allocutive osservate sono soprattutto i nomi propri e gli appellativi generici. Attraverso la metodologia della Corpus Linguistics, si svolgerà un’analisi di tipo qualitativo e quantitativo. Infatti, tramite il software AntConc (Lawrence, 2004), si indagherà sul numero e sulla tipologia di occorrenze dei vocativi più frequenti nella lingua di partenza (inglese) e nelle due lingue d’arrivo (italiano e tedesco). Inoltre, si studierà l’eventuale manifestazione degli universali traduttivi (Baker, 1993), osservando contesto linguistico in cui il fenomeno si presenta. L’aspetto innovativo della ricerca consiste in una duplice analisi che coinvolge un triplice confronto. I risultati evidenzieranno una maggiore frequenza di vocativi nelle lingue doppiate e diverse classificazioni di occorrenze. Infine, saranno riportate alcune riflessioni inerenti alle strategie traduttive che sono adottate in italiano e tedesco, a seconda del contesto linguistico e culturale.This research concerns the field of the audiovisual translation and the English movie language. In particular, the aim of the study will focus on the role of vocatives in a corpus of three films in three different languages. The chosen movies are produced in the '90s and are set in Victorian age: Jane Eyre, Swept from the Sea, The Piano. The empirical process will manly consider two categories of vocatives: proper names and address terms. The study approach will be based on the Corpus Linguistics methodology, in order to get a qualitative and a quantitative analysis of the vocatives. Indeed, there will be an investigation on the number and the type of occurrences involving the most frequent vocatives, both in the source language (English), and in the two target languages (Italian and German). Another important task of the research is the observation of translation universals (Baker, 1993), and the linguistic context in which the phenomenon occurs. The innovative feature of this work is a twofold analysis, which involves a three-way comparison. The results will show a higher frequency of vocatives in the dubbed languages and also different classifications of occurrences. Eventually, there will be some consideration regarding the translation strategies adopted for Italian and German, depending on their linguistic and cultural context.

The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the differences in the phraseological patterns used by Italian and English translators and interpreters through the intermodal corpus EPTIC_01_2011. First, the most important studies and theories about corpus linguistics and collocations are introduced. After defining the notion of “corpus”, the different types of corpora are categorised, giving particular attention to the intermodal one. Then the dissertation focuses on a description of collocations, as defined by the main linguistics scholars, and it describes some attempts to apply corpus linguistics to the study of collocations. Secondly, EPTIC_01_2011 is presented, with a description of its structure and of the text editing process carried out applying specific editing conventions and adding a set of metadata before each text. The analysis of collocation candidate bigrams (adjective+noun/noun+adjective) from a quantitative point of view, was conducted applying a methodology adapted from Durrant and Schmitt (2009). Qualitative analysis was also performed on a subsection of the data. The results of the study are presented through examples and graphs, giving particular attention to the interpretation of the data analysed from a qualitative perspective. Finally, results are summarised and categorised, and suggestions are made concerning the diverging choices made in translation and interpreting. The final section concentrates on further studies that could be carried out in the future, as well as on suggestions for corpus enlargement.

The purpose of this dissertation is to present the translation from English into Italian of selected chapters of the memoir Big Girl: How I Gave Up Dieting and Got a Life by Kelsey Miller. It tells the issues that led the author to compulsive eating and compulsive dieting, and narrates the struggles she went through trying to reduce her fat body. Moreover, the story focuses on her experience following a method called ‘Intuitive Eating’ to achieve a healthy relationship to food and self acceptance.
The first chapter begins with a consideration about Western attitudes towards body image. Afterwards, it presents an analysis of the social, cultural and historical context that led in the USA first to the establishment of a culture that idealizes the thin body, and then to the birth of a movement for fat acceptance
The second chapter deals with the oppression women feel because of this fat-shaming mindset, providing examples of positive body images in feminist literature and negative body images in post-feminist chick lit. Furthermore, this chapter presents as well a new trend within chick lit to star fat women who feel comfortable with their bodies. This kind of literature can be defined as ‘body positive’ and includes Kelsey Miller’s memoir.
The third chapter provides a brief biography of the author, followed by an analysis of Big Girl at different levels in order to identify the main characteristics of the book.
The fourth chapter contains a description of the content of each chapter selected from the book and presents the actual translation into Italian.
The fifth chapter discusses the main strategies used during the translation process and illustrates the most relevant problems encountered, providing examples from the text, as well as the solutions applied to solve them.

Il presente elaborato analizza il linguaggio calcistico con particolare attenzione al'inglese britannico e all'italiano. La prima parte della tesi si apre con un introduzione sul fenomeno globale rappresentato dal calcio; in seguito vengono analizzate le caratteristiche condivise e le differenze tra l'italiano e l'inglese calcistico. Nella seconda parte si analizza la traduzione calcistica, portando come esempio alcuni casi generali e analizzando i documenti allegati alla tesi. L'articolo originale inglese e il progetto di traduzione sono infatti il fulcro centrale di questo elaborato: verranno commentate le difficoltà incontrate durante la traduzione e le soluzioni traduttive proposte, nonché le principali differenze tra i due testi.

Lo scopo di questa tesi è quello di discutere i principali problemi di traduzione incontrati nella produzione dei sopratitoli dello spettacolo "Mind the Gap", dall'inglese all'italiano. La motivazione principale dietro la mia scelta è un interesse personale nel campo sopratitoli applicati al teatro di prosa.
Questo progetto è diviso in due parti. La prima parte costituisce la base teorica della tesi ed è diviso in tre capitoli. Il primo capitolo introduce lo spettacolo "Mind the Gap" e analizza le sue caratteristiche principali. Il secondo capitolo è dedicato alla teoria dei sopratitoli, collocandola nel discorso sulla traduzione audiovisiva e sulla traduzione teatrale. Esso include una panoramica storica di questo campo della traduzione, e la questione dell'accessibilità dei sopratitoli.
Il terzo capitolo riguarda la metodologia utilizzata durante il processo di traduzione e il modello di esame adottato per analizzare il prodotto finale. Vengono esaminate anche la funzione di auto-riflessione e di auto-osservazione della traduzione.
La seconda parte costituisce lo sviluppo pratico delle teorie introdotte e trattate nella prima parte. Il quarto capitolo fornisce un'analisi dei sopratitoli, e mette in evidenza i principali problemi incontrati durante il processo di traduzione, da un punto di vista strutturale e stilistico. Viene elaborata una discussione delle diverse strategie di traduzione adottate.
L'appendice contiene la tabella sopratitoli.

This thesis is written in English and is centred on the translation from Italian into English of some parts of the detective novel "Una mutevole verità" by Gianrico Carofiglio. For my translation I chose three chapters in which the author used the so-called "officialese", the language used to write official documents, because I wanted to try to reproduce this kind of language in English. First of all the author and the Italian source text are presented, and the main features of officialese are outlined. Then follows the translation itself and the analysis of the translating choices.

The aim of this dissertation is to provide a trilingual translation from English into Italian and from Italian into Spanish of a policy statement from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) regarding road safety. The document, named “Formula Zero: a strategy for reducing fatalities and injuries on track and road”, was published in June 2000 and involves an approach about road safety inspired by another approach introduced in Sweden called ‘Vision Zero’.
This work consists of six sections. The first chapter introduces the main purposes and activities of the Federation, as well as the institutions related to it and Vision Zero. The second chapter presents the main lexical, morphosyntactic and stylistic features of the institutional texts and special languages. In particular, the text contains technical nomenclature of transports and elements of sport language, especially regarding motor sport and Formula One. In the third chapter, the methodology is explained, with all the resources used during the preliminary phase and the translation, including corpora, glossaries, expert consultancy and specialised sites. The fourth chapter focuses on the morphosyntactic and terminology features contained in the text, while the fifth chapter presents the source text and the target texts. The final chapter deals with all the translation strategies that are applied, alongside with all the challenging elements detected. Therefore, the dissertation concludes with some theoretical and practical considerations about the role of inverse translation and English as Lingua Franca (ELF), by comparing the text translated into Spanish to the original in English, using Italian as a lingua franca.

The purpose of this thesis is, on the one hand, to illustrate the peculiarities of children’s literature, fantasy fiction and their translation and, on the other hand, to propose a translation from English to Italian of some chapters of the e-book The Explorers’ Gate by American author Chris Grabenstein.
The first chapters of this work offer an analysis of different critical studies on children’s literature and fantasy fiction and illustrate the characteristics of these two literary expressions. I will also discuss the different approaches to their translation in order to produce a translated text that is consistent with its literary genre and with translation theories. The third chapter is about the author and includes an interview on his idea of children’s literature and his opinions about translation.
The second part of this thesis is represented by the actual translation of the e-book. Firstly, I will analyze the source text, dividing the analysis in extra-textual and intra- textual and focusing on sender, addressee, time and space, function of the text, plot, structure, narrator, style and language used by the author. I will also highlight those elements that probably would be challenging during the translation phase. Secondly, I will explain the macro-strategy that I adopted during the process of translation, which can be defined as child-oriented. In the last chapter I will highlight those passages that represented translation challenges and I will show how I tackled them.
