Queer Representations in Chinese-language Film and the Cultural Landscape provides a cultural history of queer representations in Chinese-language film and media, negotiated by locally produced knowledge, local cultural agency, and lived histories. Incorporating a wide range of materials in both English and Chinese, this interdisciplinary project investigates the processes through which Chinese tongzhi/queer imaginaries are articulated, focusing on four main themes: the Chinese familial system, Chinese opera, camp aesthetic, and documentary impulse. Chao’s discursive analysis is rooted in and advances genealogical inquiries: a non-essentialist intervention into the "Chinese" idea of filial piety, a transcultural perspective on the contested genre of film melodrama, a historical investigation of the local articulations of mass camp and gay camp, and a transnational inquiry into the different formats of documentary. This book is a must for anyone exploring the cultural history of Chinese tongzhi/queer through the lens of transcultural media.

This book considers the Gothic as mode in contemporary Spanish culture. Its underlying principle is to see the contemporary Spanish Gothic as part of a wider, transnational Gothic continuum. Therefore, although the proposed book will seek to tease out the Gothic specifically within Spanish culture it seeks simultaneously to connect that culture with debates further afield, looking at the interplay between national and transnational concerns. Its theoretical underpinning lies primarily within Gothic scholarship but also draws on the scholarship of contemporary Spanish and transnational culture. The book refigures the idea of transcultural reinscription away from the implied sense of a unidirectional flow. Instead, it takes the contemporary Gothic not as simply a reinscription specifically within Spanish culture, but as multiple and simultaneous reinscriptions whereby Spanish culture comes to participate in a wider Gothic in which the generic and the specific are constantly in play and at play. It does this through a series of case studies: Goya biopics, bestselling novels, the haunted house in Spanish film, the Gothic camera, Gothic medicine and the body.

An Endangered History is an account of the little-studied region of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of British-governed Bengal from the late eighteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. The CHT lie on the crossroads of India, east Bengal (now Bangladesh), and Burma (contemporary Myanmar). An area of lush rivers and fertile valleys, it has historically been celebrated for its haunting natural beauty and religious heterodoxy, from the chronicles of Mughal governors to the ethno-histories of colonial British administrators. The region is composed of several indigenous or ‘tribal’ communities, whose transcultural histories defied colonial and later postcolonial taxonomies of identity and difference. In particular, this book focuses on how British administrators used European knowledge systems—botany, natural history, gender and sexuality, demography and anthropology—to construct the autochthone groups of the CHT and their landscapes. In the process, British administrators and later South Asian nationalists would misunderstand and falsely classify the region through the reifying language of religion, linguistics, race, and, most perniciously, nation, in part due to its unique, and at times perilous, location on the invisible fault lines between South and Southeast Asia. In this manner, this book argues that the colonial archive serves not only to exhume a long-forgotten regional past but also to illuminate a dynamic interconnected global history. It hopes to re-establish the vital place of this much marginalized border region within the larger study of colonial South Asia and Indian nationalism.

Soul in Seoul: African American Popular Music and K-pop examines how K-pop cites musical and performative elements of Black popular music culture as well as the ways that fans outside of Korea understand these citations. K-pop represents a hybridized mode of Korean popular music that emerged in the 1990s with global aspirations. Its hybridity combines musical elements from Korean and foreign cultures, particularly rhythm and blues-based genres (R&B) of African American popular music. Korean pop, R&B and hip-hop solo artists and groups engage in citational practices by simultaneously emulating R&B’s instrumentation and vocals and enhancing R&B by employing Korean musical strategies to such an extent that K-pop becomes part of a global R&B tradition. Korean pop groups use dynamic images and quality musical production to engage in cultural work that culminates the kind of global form of crossover pioneered by Black American music producers. Korean R&B artists, with a focus on vocals, take the R&B tradition beyond the Black-white binary, and Korean hip-hop practitioners use sampling and live instrumentation to promote R&B’s innovative music aesthetics. K-pop artists also cite elements of African American performance in Korean music videos that disrupt limiting representations. K-pop’s citational practices reveal diverse musical aesthetics driven by the interplay of African American popular music and Korean music strategies. As a transcultural fandom, global fans function as part of K-pop’s music press and deem these citational practices authentic. Citational practices also challenge homogenizing modes of globalization by revealing the multiple cultural forces that inform K-pop.
