A direct way of reducing the number of cars on the road is to dissuade individuals from exclusively using their car and instead integrate public transport into their daily routine. Planning multi-modal journeys is a complex task for which individuals often rely on decision support tools. However, offering individuals different journey options represents a significant algorithmic challenge. The failure to provide users with a set of journey options that differ considerably from one another in terms of the modes of transport employed is currently preventing the widespread uptake of multi-modal journey planning among the general public. In this paper, we introduce a dynamic programming algorithm that remedies this situation by modeling different transport networks as a graph that is then pruned by various graph-reduction pre-processing techniques. This approach enables us to offer a diverse set of efficient multi-modal solutions to users almost instantaneously. A computational study on three datasets corresponding to various real-world mobility networks with up to 30,000 vertices and 596,000 arcs demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Online resources of engineering design information are a critical resource for practicing engineers. These online resources often contain references and content associated with technical memos, journal articles and “white papers” of prior engineering projects. However, filtering this stream of information to find the right information appropriate to an engineering issue and the engineer is a time-consuming task. The focus of this research lies in ascertaining tacit knowledge to model the information needs of the users of an engineering information system. It is proposed that the combination of reading time and the semantics of documents accessed by users reflect their tacit knowledge. By combining the computational text analysis tool of Latent Semantic Analysis with analyses of on-line user transaction logs, we introduce the technique of Latent Interest Analysis (LIA) to model information needs based on tacit knowledge. Information needs are modeled by a vector equation consisting of a linear combination of the user’s queries and prior documents downloaded, scaled by the reading time of each document to measure the degree of relevance. A validation study of the LIA model revealed a higher correlation between predicted and actual information needs for our model in comparison to models lacking scaling by reading time and a representation of the semantics of prior accessed documents. The technique was incorporated into a digital library to recommend engineering education materials to users.

The CoVid-19 pandemic has demanded society to social distance, which significantly affected not only people's routine but also and their mental health. The way each person is facing this period of confinement is shaped according to their principles, culture, health, and financial stability, thus leading individuals to react emotionally in different ways. Through Design, it is possible to map these experiences and represent them through User Journeys, allowing clear representations of how the experience took place when facing the fear of contagion, the sudden change of routine, and isolation. This study focuses on discussing the effectiveness of unifying different experiences in a single representation, mainly to outline emotional aspects. Trying to balance all emotional variations in a single User Journey prevents the researcher from seeing important details of the users' experience. In this study, the need to use individual User Journeys was evidenced when it is intended to analyse the emotional aspects of users when dealing with products or services, as individuality can shed light on aspects not observable in a consolidated analysis.

Abstrak: Open Journal Systems (OJS) adalah aplikasi perangkat lunak open source untuk mengelola dan menerbitkan jurnal ilmiah, untuk mendukung fungsinya tersebut Open Journal Systems (OJS) secara umum memiliki fitur yang dalam perkembangan setiap versinya mengalami perbaikan dan penyesuaian dengan kebutuhan. Proses penerbitan jurnal sangat berdampak pada proses akreditasi jurnal, oleh karena itu perlu dipahami proses bisnis alur pengiriman artikel dari author menggunakan Open Journal Systems (OJS) hingga artikel di publish. Dalam sistem diperlukan pemodelan perencanaan, desain dan penggunaan interface antara pengguna dan komputer, interaksi ini dikenal sebagai interaksi antara manusia dengan komputer (Human Computer Interaction). Framework digunakan untuk memahami interaksi sistem komputer memberikan fasilitas bahasa antara bahasa user dan bahasa sistem. Pengguna (user) dan sistem komputer (system) dapat saling berinteraksi menggunakan beberapa cara interaksi yaitu style kombinasi form fill-in dan direct manipulation. In the system required modeling planning, design and use of interfaces between users and computers, this interaction is known as the interaction between humans and computers (Human Computer Interaction). Framework is used to understand the interaction of computer systems to provide language facilities between the user's language and system language. Users (users) and computer systems (systems) can interact with each other using several modes of interaction, namely the combination style form fill-in and direct manipulation. Open Journal Systems (OJS) 3.x. has a more concise, easy and flexible appearance because it is built on the principle of Interaction Framework involving users, input, system, output. Анотація:
CASPUR allows many academic Italian institutions located in the Centre-South of Italy to access more than 7 million articles through a digital library platform. The behaviour of its users were analyzed by considering their “traces”, which are stored in the web server log file. Using several web mining and data mining techniques the author discovered a gradual and dynamic change in the way articles are accessed. In particular there is evidence of a journal browsing increase in comparison to the searching mode. Such phenomenon were interpreted using the idea that browsing better meets the needs of users when they want to keep abreast about the latest advances in their scientific field, in comparison to a more generic searching inside the digital library.

Анотація:
This study provides a deeper understanding of the inner-mechanism which users engage in their acceptance of social media (in this case, Facebook event pages) via extending the TAM model by adding three factors: emotion, perceived enjoyment and perceived relevance. This work applied structural equation modelling (SEM) to test 13 hypotheses, with collected data from 323 Facebook users who have been members of the event page “Traveling Talent 2017”. Empirical results showed that the model fits well with the sample. The results of empirical tests using a structural equation model confirm all the research hypotheses. Implications and insights are given for event practitioners and are discussed accordingly.

The disruptive offline mobilization of participants in online conspiracy theory (CT) discussions has highlighted the importance of understanding how online users may form radicalized conspiracy beliefs. While prior work researched the factors leading up to joining online CT discussions and provided theories of how conspiracy beliefs form, we have little understanding of how conspiracy radicalization evolves after users join CT discussion communities. In this paper, we provide the empirical modeling of various radicalization phases in online CT discussion participants. To unpack how conspiracy engagement is related to radicalization, we first characterize the users' journey through CT discussions via conspiracy engagement pathways. Specifically, by studying 36K Reddit users through their 169M contributions, we uncover four distinct pathways of conspiracy engagement: steady high, increasing, decreasing, and steady low. We further model three successive stages of radicalization guided by prior theoretical works. Specific sub-populations of users, namely those on steady high and increasing conspiracy engagement pathways, progress successively through various radicalization stages. In contrast, users on the decreasing engagement pathway show distinct behavior: they limit their CT discussions to specialized topics, participate in diverse discussion groups, and show reduced conformity with conspiracy subreddits. By examining users who disengage from online CT discussions, this paper provides promising insights about conspiracy recovery process.

Анотація:
Because new learning technologies are enabling students to build and explore probability models, we believe that there is a need to determine the big enduring ideas that underpin probabilistic thinking and modeling. By uncovering the elements of the thinking modes of expert users of probability models we aim to provide a base for the setting of new and more relevant goals for probability education in the 21st century. We interviewed seven practitioners, whose professional lives are centered on probability modeling over a diverse range of fields including the development of probability theory. A thematic analysis approach produced four frameworks: (1) probability modeling approaches; (2) probabilistic thinking approaches to a problem; (3) a probability modeling cycle; and (4) core building blocks for probabilistic thinking and modeling. The main finding was that seeing structure and applying structure were important aspects of probability modeling. The implications of our findings for probability education are discussed. In this article, we introduce dynamac, a suite of commands designed to assist users in modeling and visualizing the effects of autoregressive distributed lag models and in testing for cointegration. We discuss the bounds cointegration test proposed by Pesaran, Shin, and Smith (2001, Journal of Applied Econometrics 16: 289–326), which we have adapted into a command. Because the resulting models can be dynamically complex, we follow the advice of Philips (2018, American Journal of Political Science 62: 230–244) by introducing a flexible command designed to dynamically simulate and plot a variety of types of autoregressive distributed lag models, including error-correction models.

Ce travail porte sur l’analyse des parcours utilisateurs dans les bibliothèques numériques qui se caractérisent par des processus métier faiblement structurés. Nous allons avoir recours à la fouille de processus afin d’extraire les modèles à partir de ces parcours. Les modèles découverts permettront aux concepteurs de ces systèmes de répondre d’une manière plus efficace aux besoins des utilisateurs et à leurs présenter un ensemble de recommandations. Dans cette thèse, nous avons généré des modèles à partir des traces de navigation des utilisateurs du portail web de la bibliothèque nationale de France, Gallica. Dans un premier temps, nous avons adapté ces traces sous un format compatible avec les algorithmes de fouille de processus. Dans un second temps, nous avons regroupé ces traces. L’originalité de notre apport porte sur le regroupement des parcours similaires, en tenant compte des caractéristiques existantes dans les traces, afin d’éviter la génération des modèles complexes, souvent non exploitables, à partir de telles traces volumineuse set non structurées. Enfin, nous avons validé notre méthode sur deux jeux de données simulé et réel. Nous avons comparé notre méthode à deux méthodes inspirées des travaux existants et les résultats montrent que notre méthode surpasse celles existantes sur les deux jeux de données à la fois dans le regroupement et la modélisation
This research focuses on extracting users’ journeys in a digital library characterized by weakly structured business processes. In this thesis, we investigate whether it is possible to model user journeys using process mining. The discovered models allow system designers to respond more efficiently to users’ needs and to present them with a set of recommendations. For our study, we have chosen to extract the users’ journey models of the digital library Gallica, based on real traces generated by their users. First, we adapt these browsing traces in a well-defined format compatible with process mining techniques. The originality of our contribution concerns the grouping of similar paths, considering the existing characteristics in the traces, to avoid the generation of complex models, often not exploitable, from such voluminous and unstructured traces. Finally, we validate our method on two simulated and real data sets. We compare our method to two other methods inspired by existing works. The results show that our method outper forms the existing ones on both datasets in clustering and modeling

This book draws upon cognitive poetics and uses an assortment of works written in Britain and the US for preteen and adolescent readers from 1906 to 2018 to argue that authors typically employ a limited and powerful set of spatial metaphors to organize the classical past for young readers. Popular models include palimpsest texts, which see the past as a collection of strata in which each new era forms a layer superimposed upon a foundation laid earlier; map texts, which use the metaphor of the mappable journey to represent a protagonist’s process of maturing while gaining knowledge of the self and/or the world; and fractal texts, in which small parts of the narrative are thematically identical to the whole in a way that implies that history is infinitely repeatable. While a given text may embrace multiple metaphors in presenting the past, we argue for associations between dominant metaphors, genre, and outlook. Map texts highlight problem-solving and arrival at one’s planned destination; they model an assertive, confident outlook. Palimpsest texts position character and reader as occupying one among many equally important temporal layers; they emphasize the landscape’s continuity but the individual’s impermanence, modeling a more modest vision of one’s place in time. Fractal texts work by analogy, denying difference between past and present and inviting readers to conclude that significant change may be impossible. Thus each model uses the classical past to urge and thus perhaps to develop a particular approach to life.

As an indigenous scientist, I have dedicated all my professional life to protecting people using informatics for public policy to the privacy of users, patients, clients, and citizens as a human right and obligation as part of the United Nations international development goals. I am reflecting on my earliest knowledge of the impact of data and information privacy on my journey as scientist. I was just a number out of many other numbers as a indigenous child. The aim of this paper is to share my own personal experience together with one of my students. Now working with data as a scientific task within the data modeling to measure poverty. As a datum with human value, I was a 1) Female child with young parents, 2) Low socioeconomic status & 3) Identified as an indigenous person within a minor language group. These three data descriptions described me as a person who needed protection of my human dignity and identity as a child, based on all the protocols of social services for providing help. In conclusion, as scientists, we need to remember when using client data in vulnerable contexts and protection of their privacy, due to the potential risk of active discrimination. Thanks to my extensive education in Australia, I became an outlying datum that deviated from the data modeling applied to me. Today, I work for Privacy digital standards to impact real life with respect to human dignity and obtain accurate scientific interpretations of human beings’ realities.

This chapter uses topic modelling to explore the evolution of the scientific discourse in the scientific journal Philosophical Transactions in the mid-18th century. Combining cultural historical close reading and statistical topic modelling, the study demonstrates the value of combining ‘new’ and more traditional historical research methods. The study shows that there were at least nine ways of talking about astronomical observations around the two transits of Venus, in 1761 and 1768, and in this reveal several previously neglected themes and unnoticed temporal discourse changes. One notable theme when talking about experiments was the continuity regarding concern for exactness and reliability of the collected knowledge, while others indicate a significant use of algebra to explain astronomical events and that the amount of causal theories has weakened over time. The study furthermore documents a connection between politeness and strategic attention seeking using the transits of Venus. Finally, the results reveal significant astronomical conversations related to terrestrial weather, and the circumstances and equipment of experimenting and observing.

Today, virtual and augmented reality is being introduced into various professional fields, including the educational process. Virtual reality technology makes it possible to immerse people in a simulated virtual world and makes communication much easier, because it is a spatially entertaining form in which each user-visitor can create not only their own image, shape or choose the environment and so forth. The study demonstrates with concrete examples the possibilities of using the AltspaceVR platform in teaching educational disciplines, turning an ordinary educational process into a fascinating journey. The authors of the publication (Associate Professors of the Department of Ukrainian Philology and Journalism of Kherson State University) shared their experience in the pilot mentoring programme for teachers of higher education institutions «New Tool ‒ New Opportunities: AltspaceVR» initiated by the «Learn and Differentiate: Infomedia Literacy» project team, which is implemented by the International Research and Exchanges board (IREX) and supported by the US and UK Embassies in partnership with the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science and the Academy of Ukrainian Press. Using the example of the information zone «Gender Stereotypes» of the educational discipline «Gender Linguistics», presentation of the educational discipline «Language Self-Branding of Modern Specialist», announcement of the educational discipline «Language Portrait of the City», the teachers demonstrate the possibilities of using AltspaceVR platform as an informational and educational environment. The authors argumentally prove that in distance learning mode, working in a virtual reality game environment today becomes not only a reality but also a necessity. The use of AltspaceVR as one of the latest technologies in teaching is quite reasonable. The AltspaceVR platform allows participants of the educational process to realize the same opportunities and get the same impressions as when participating in a real (traditional) event without leaving home. The main advantage of using the AltspaceVR platform in distance learning is its interactivity, which prevents the learning process from becoming boring. In contrast to Zoom and other platforms, there is an opportunity to involve participants as much as possible, for instance through role playing, games, etc. The effective implementation of virtual reality technologies, in particular the use of the AltspaceVR platform in the educational process, has a powerful potential to form an individual with a high level of digital literacy, capable of learning, communication and collaboration. The academic freedom of the teacher allows to define the tool of digital learning and part of its implementation in the educational process. A relevant issue today is the teacher’s workload, since modelling the artificially created world on the AltspaceVR platform for classes is quite time-consuming. And, of course, mastering the latest information and communication technologies requires new competencies and a high level of teacher’s digital literacy. Abstract Most innovations happen at the intersections of disciplines. New products get designed through synergistic integration of multi-disciplinary concepts. For example, in today’s automobiles purely mechanical systems have been replaced by “by-wire” devices that are software controlled, lighter, more efficient, and reliable. While engineering disciplines are merging seamlessly in real world products, academic silos are mostly still intact. At University of Detroit Mercy, we have broken down some silos by launching the Robotics and Mechatronics Systems Engineering major. Mechatronic Systems Modeling is a mandatory course in this major. This course uses a technique of power flow called bond graphs to model mechatronic systems. This technique is not discipline specific and students with different disciplinary background can easily understand and master it. Recently, the use of Simscape, a MATLAB/Simulink tool for physical system modeling has also been added to this course. The use of these two tools in complex system modeling tasks helps students develop an understanding of engineering system behavior by moving beyond the narrow boundaries of individual disciplines. This paper describes the course content and structure, the modeling methods, selected student projects, some of the lessons learned, and several offshoot activities that have resulted from this course.

As noted in a Summer 2007 EPRI Journal article entitled Running Dry At The Power Plant, “Securing sufficient supplies of fresh water for societal, industrial, and agricultural uses while protecting the natural environment is becoming increasingly difficult in many parts of the United States. Climate variability and change may exacerbate the situation through hotter weather and disrupted precipitation patterns that promote regional drought.” [1] Currently, in the United States, thermoelectric power production accounts for approximately 41% of freshwater withdrawals [2] and 3% of overall fresh water consumption. [3] The Electric Power Research Institute, EPRI, as part of its Technology Innovation (TI) program, is collaborating with Johnson Controls to conduct a feasibility study comparing the performance of a water saving Thermosyphon Cooling Hybrid System (TCHS) with other heat rejection systems for power plant applications. The TCHS employs a sensible heat rejection device, a thermosyphon cooler (TSC) in conjunction with an evaporative heat rejection device, an open cooling tower, to satisfy the annual cooling requirements of a given power plant. By reducing the evaporative heat load, the TCHS can significantly reduce the annual water consumed for cooling while still maintaining peak power plant output on the hottest summer days. Details of the interactive simulation program developed to compare various power plant heat rejection systems on an annual 8,760 hourly basis are discussed. Examples of the types of results and comparisons that can be made from the data obtained from the simulation program are presented.

This work presents the numerical modeling and simulation of a wind turbine gearset with hydrodynamic bearings and an induction generator. Transmissions based on epicyclic gear trains applied to wind turbines have some advantages, i.e., compactness, robustness and low maintenance requirement. The early stages of the development of such mechanism need numerical results in order to design it properly. The complexity of this machine requires a multidisciplinary approach to model and simulate a system comprising of mechanical, fluid and electrical components. The bearing model is integrated to the kinetics of the gearbox, allowing a precise evaluation of the journal bearing’s movements. Through a multidisciplinary multibody dynamics software, the gearbox dynamics, the bearing behavior and the induction generator are calculated in a single system. The numerical solution of the hydrodynamic lubrication problem of a finite bearing is achieved using the finite element method. The hydrodynamic bearing and the induction generator are implemented as a user module in MBDyn software, which makes them available to model and simulate other types of rotating machinery. Simulations of two different conditions showed a better damping property when compared to rolling bearings, in this gearset.

Abstract The concept of integrated modeling and digital transformation has grown within the oil and gas industry over the past decade and every such digital transformation has its own set of challenges from which significant learnings can be derived to enhance the knowledge base of the industry. This paper encompasses the successful achievement journey from the UAE's first end to end standardized workflow- based digital transformation in a giant gas producing asset, where several key challenges and learnings have been summarized that are originated from a unique project for a giant gas-condensate asset. The role and importance from multiple business stakeholders such as the planning, engineering, operations and performance teams was imperative to establish a collaborative working philosophy and a detailed specification document, the end-to-end solution, functional and non-functional requirements were captured and aligned with end-user needs. Firstly, a detailed offline phase along with focused efforts in understanding data-quality and establishing representative base-models, was key to enhance the benefit-realization of the integrated platform. Secondly, the online implementation helped in achieving significant process efficiency improvement as inbuilt data validation features significantly improved the confidence of the output. The diagnostic workflows replaced the conventional spreadsheet-based approach. The digital platform works as a common reference of "truth" for everyone across the organization. It helped to produce several the business KPIs to assist the engineers in emphasizing on the problem area, such as improved well test planning.

Abstract Practice and experiments with squeeze film dampers (SFDs) sealed with piston rings (PRs) show the lubricant exits through the PR slit, i.e. the gap made by the PR abutted ends when installed, forced as a jet during the portion of a rotor whirl cycle generating a positive squeeze film pressure. In the other portion of a whirl cycle, a sub ambient dynamic pressure ingests air into the film that mixes with the lubricant to produce a bubbly mixture. To reduce persistent air ingestion, commercial air breathing engines utilizing PRSFDs demand of a sufficiently large lubricant supply pressure (Ps), and hence a larger flow rate that is proportional to the journal squeeze velocity (vs = amplitude r × frequency of motion ω). The stringent requirement clearly limits the applicability and usefulness of SFDs. This paper presents a computational physics model for a sealed ends SFD operating with a mixture and delivers predictions benchmarked against profuse laboratory test data. The model implements a Reynolds equation adapted for a homogeneous bubbly mixture, includes temporal fluid inertia effects, and uses physics based inlet and outlet lubricant conditions through feed holes and PR slit, respectively. In the experiments for model validation, a SFD damper, 127 mm in diameter D, film land length L = 25.4 mm (L/D = 0.2), and radial clearance c = 0.371 mm, is supplied with an air in ISO VG2 oil bubbly mixture of known GVF, zero (pure oil) to 50% in steps of 10%. The mixture supply pressure varies from Ps = 2.06 bar-g (30 psig) to 6.20 bar-g (90 psig). Located in grooves at the top and bottom of the journal, a piston ring (PR) and an O-ring (OR) seal the film land. The OR does not allow any oil leakage or air ingestion; hence the supplied mixture discharges thru the PR slit into a vessel submerged within a large volume of lubricant. Dynamic load tests with a single frequency ω, varying from 10 Hz to 60 Hz, produce circular centered orbits with amplitude r = 0.2c. The measurements record the exerted forces and journal motions and an analysis delivers force coefficients, damping and inertia, representative of the exerted frequency range. The model predicts the pressure field and evolution of the gas volume fraction (GVF) within the film land and, in a simulated process replicating the experimental procedure, delivers representative force coefficients. For all Ps conditions, both predictions and tests show the SFD added mass coefficients significantly decrease as the inlet GVF (βs) increases. The experimentally derived damping coefficients do not show a significant change, except for tests with the largest concentration of air (βs = 0.5). The predicted damping differs by 10% with the test derived coefficient which does not readily decrease as the inlet GVF (βs) increases. The added mass coefficients, test and predicted, decrease with βs, both being impervious to the magnitude of supply pressure. The test PRSFD shows a quadrature stiffness due to the sliding friction between the PR being pushed against the journal. An increase in supply pressure exacerbates this unique stiffness that may impair the action of the squeeze film to dissipate mechanical energy. The comprehensive test results, first of their kind, demonstrate that accurate modeling of SFDs operating with air ingestion remains difficult as the flow process and the paths of its major components (air and liquid) are rather complex.
