AbstractNurses with reduced work ability are highly susceptible to the deleterious effects of their working environments, and their rates of sick leave, disability, and early retirement are higher than average. The aim of this study was to evaluate work ability in 433 Slovenian hospital nurses aged over fifty years providing secondary care in thirteen hospitals across Slovenia. To do that we used a standardised instrument known as work ability index (WAI). Mean WAI was 36.98±6.46 and median 38. WAI was not associated with age (Spearman’s ρ=-0.034, p=0.475). Total WAI score strongly correlated with the 1st item of the WAI questionnaire “current work ability” (ρ=0.726, p<0.001). Higher WAI scores were also associated with academic education, full-time employment, and working in a single (morning) or three shifts. Our WAI findings in nurses over fifty call for systemic changes in the nursing environment to maintain good work ability among nurses until the retirement age and beyond.

Abstract. The purpose of this study was to validate a version of the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI) for children and adolescents (WAI-CA). The sample included 109 children/adolescents aged between 7 and 17 years, outpatients in a Clinical Psychology Unit (Portugal), who completed the WAI-CA between psychotherapy sessions 3 and 35. A subsample of 30 children/adolescents aged between 10 and 14 years filled out both the WAI-CA and the WAI within a one-to-two week’s interval. A subsample of 57 children/adolescents with ages between 7 and 17 years filled out the WAI-CA, and their accompanying parent the WAI. Results show high internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha ranging from .71 to .89) and good external validity. Significant differences were found in the bond subscale according to age, gender, and diagnosis, with higher values in children compared to adolescents, in girls compared to boys, and in participants with internalizing and externalizing problems compared to participants with school problems. Moderate to strong significant correlations were found between children/adolescents’ WAI-CA and WAI scores and weak correlations between children/adolescents’ WAI-CA scores and parent’s WAI scores. Results suggest that the WAI-CA is a valid measure of working alliance to be used with children and adolescents.

The Work Ability Index (WAI) is a validated and widely used tool in occupational research. However, normative values for physical therapists (PTs) by age and sex are lacking. Although the nature of PTs’ work is physically demanding, it is unknown whether muscular fitness is associated with their WAI. This study sought to provide reference WAI data for Spanish PTs and to evaluate the association between PTs’ muscular fitness and WAI. Data on WAI of 1005 PTs were collected using a questionnaire. A subgroup (n = 68) performed a battery of physical tests including grip strength, push-ups and back-extension endurance. Associations between muscular fitness and WAI were evaluated using logistic regression controlling for various confounders. PTs aged 50 years or older had lower WAI scores than their younger counterparts. PTs with high back-extension endurance scored 3.5 (95% CI) higher in the WAI than those with low endurance. No associations were found between grip strength or number of push-ups and WAI. Our findings seem to highlight the importance of muscular fitness in PTs, especially the back-extension endurance.

ObjectivesPatient-centred care is related to better health outcomes, greater patient satisfaction and reduced healthcare costs. One of the core components of patient-centred care, defined in the patient-centred clinical method, is enhancing the patient–doctor relationship. In this study, we aim to measure the therapeutic alliance in consultations between patients and family doctors in Belgium, and explore which patient, provider and practice characteristics are associated with the strength of the therapeutic alliance.DesignCross-sectional cohort study using the Working Alliance Inventory for General Practice (WAI-GP). The patients and family doctors completed a survey after the consultation. The survey consisted of the WAI-GP, demographics, consultation characteristics and variables related to the patient–doctor relationship.SettingBelgian primary care.ParticipantsEvery third patient (both practice and house call visits) was invited to participate. 170 patient–doctor dyads from four practices were included. Total of 10 doctors (30% men, age range 24–63 years) and 170 patients (35.9% men, age range 18–92 years).Primary and secondary outcome measuresPrimary outcome was the WAI-GP score and its correlations with characteristics of the doctor (gender, age) and patients (gender, age, chronic disease, number of annual consultations).ResultsThe median WAI-GP score reported after these consultations was 4.5±0.62. Higher WAI-GP scores were reported for consultations with male doctors and by older patients. In the subsample of patients with a chronic illness, higher WAI-GP scores were reported by patients who had more than 10 follow-up consultations per year.ConclusionsConsultation quality is an important aspect of healthcare, but attention is needed to understand how the WAI-GP performs in relation to variables that are beyond control, such as gender of the physician, age of the patient and variables related to building continuity of care. This has implications for the measurement of quality of healthcare.

Abstract Background: The work ability index (WAI) is one the most widely used instruments for measuring perceived work ability. However, very few studies have used this instrument in Iran. The present study is designed to assess effect of individual and work-related risk factors on the WAI in one dairy factory. Methods: This cross-sectional study was designed among 117 workers. Work ability was measured by the Persian versions of Work Ability Index (P-WAI). An author-developed measure was used to assess individual and work-related factors. All Statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 21 (USA, SPSS Inc.). Results: The mean age of participants was 32.38 ± 7.3 and the Mean score of the WAI was 44.92 ± 5.56. According to the categorical classification of WAI score, 10.9, 35.6, and 53.5 % of participants had moderate, good and excellent work ability, respectively. The results of statistical analyses showed that mean WAI significantly differed with age (0.049), sleep quality (p= 0.035) and employment status (p= 0.014). Conclusion: To improve the workers’ work ability, intervention programs should focus on improving sleep quality and exercise. Also, we suggest that increasing job insecurity should be considered an important intervention in promoting worker’s work ability. Keywords: Work Ability Index (WAI), Sleep Quality, Job Insecurity

Summary Assessment of work ability is an important aspect of occupational medical services, the main goal being to maintain employees’ health, well-being and efficiency. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the work ability of workers employed by two machinery factories. We used the Work Ability Index (WAI) questionnaire to assess 165 workers of an iron casting factory A and 166 workers in a press-forging plant B. The data obtained were evaluated and compared based on gender, age, length of service and occupation. Mean WAI for the two factories were almost identical (43.3±4.9 for Factory A and 43.3±4.6 for Factory B), both indicating good overall work ability. The lowest mean WAI (37.7) was registered for the crane operators from Factory B, and the highest (47.2) - for the molders in Factory A. The female production workers in Factory A had a significantly lower WAI as compared to their male counterparts (p=0.001). WAI also varied significantly between different age groups and occupations in the two plants. Significant negative correlations were found between work ability and length of service, as well as between psychological resources and gender (Factory A) and the length of service (Factory B). WAI is a useful tool in finding vulnerable workers who need more attention from occupational health specialists.

Abstract Background Increasing longevity raised the prospect of a workplace for ageing workers. Previous studies reveal that work ability decreases with age, even among the healthy, and decreased significantly with age among women. The aim of the study is to examine the perception of work ability of public sector employees aged 55 years and older and gender differences in three European countries. Methods A prospective longitudinal study design and standardized “Work Ability Index” (WAI) were used. This study analysed the relationship between ageing, gender, and perceived work ability among 1653 employees aged 45.06±10.90 years (562 men and 1091 women) from Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Monte Negro. The research was conducted in 2018. Results Older employees had a better WAI than their younger colleagues (P<0.001). The lowest prevalence rate 20% of excellent WAI was between 35 and 44 years of age. The reduction of WAI in Bosnia and Herzegovina was huge 68%, compared with 30% in Monte Negro (more than 2 times) and 14% in Spain (almost 5 times more). Conclusion Gender and age was not protector and predictor of excellent or reduced work ability. Work ability did not decrease with age among women and men, public sector employees. Work ability depends of health and safety, promotion and preventive activities at the workplace.

Background: As shown by tympanometric and wideband acoustic immittance (WAI) measures, developmental changes that occur in the middle ear and the external auditory canal can affect the mechano-acoustic properties of the middle ear system during the first 2 years of life. However, these observed differences and the specific course of maturation have not been fully investigated. Purpose: The overall goal of the current study was to define the time course and rate at which functional maturation of the middle ear occurs in human infants through wideband acoustic immittance (WAI). It was also within the scope of this study to establish normative data to characterize acoustic properties of the normal middle ear in infants from birth to 6 mo of age. Research Design: Newborns were tested longitudinally at 1-mo intervals up to 6 mo of age for a total of six visits. All babies passed transient evoked otoacoustic emission screening on each visit. Tympanograms and WAI were recorded, and the distributions of WAI patterns were analyzed as a function of age. WAI was measured across a wide range of frequencies from birth to 6 mos of age in a cohort of 31 infants. Test-retest differences for WAI were also evaluated. Study Sample: Thirty-one newborns were recruited. Data Collection and Analysis: A repeated-measure analysis of variance was conducted to investigate whether the variations observed in power reflectance at ambient pressure across the six visits were statistically different. All significant findings were subject to Greenhouse-Geisser correction for repeated-measures sphericity and inflated type-I error. Results: Results showed that power reflectance increased (closer to 1) at low frequencies (<400 Hz) and decreased (closer to 0) at high frequencies (>2000 Hz) as a function of age. There was very little change in power reflectance from 600 to 1600 Hz across the first 6 mo of life. Most group changes that were observed were also consistently shown in longitudinal changes observed within individual subjects. Conclusions: The overall maturation of the middle ear can result in a lower reflectance at higher frequencies and a higher reflectance at lower frequencies. This could be explained by known changes in ear-canal and/or middle-ear structures across this time period, which could lead to changes in mass and resistance. An increase in volume in the middle-ear cavity, reduction of middle-ear debris, and overall decrease in resistive elements might be contributing to these changes. Significant differences were observed between each visit, which could warrant the use of age-specific norms when applying WAI data to infants less than 6 mo of age.

Objective(s). The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of wideband acoustic immittance (WAI) in the diagnosis of otosclerosis by comparing the differences in the energy reflectance (ER) of WAI between patients with otosclerosis and age- and gender-matched normal hearing controls in the Chinese population. Methods. Twenty surgically confirmed otosclerotic ears were included in the otosclerotic group. The ER of WAI at ambient and peak pressures, resonance frequency, and 226-Hz tympanogram were collected prior to surgery using a Titan hearing test platform (Interacoustics A/S, Middelfart, Denmark). All diagnoses of otosclerosis in the tested ear were confirmed by surgery after the measurements. Thirteen normal adults (26 ears) who were age- and gender-matched with the otosclerotic patients were included as the control group. Results. At peak pressure, the ERs of otosclerotic patients were higher than those of the control group for frequencies less than 4,000Hz and were lower for frequencies greater than 4,000Hz. In addition, within the analyzed frequencies, the differences observed at 2,520Hz was statistically significant (p<0.05/16=0.003, Bonferroni corrected). At ambient pressure, the differences observed at 1,260 and 6,350Hz were statistically significant (p<0.05/16=0.003, Bonferroni corrected). Although the differences between the otosclerotic and control groups exhibited similar trends to those in studies implemented in Caucasian populations, the norms in the present study in the control group were different from those in the Caucasian populations, suggesting racial differences in WAI test results. Regarding the middle ear resonance frequency, no significant difference was observed between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion. WAI can provide valuable information for the diagnosis of otosclerosis in the Chinese population. Norms and diagnostic criteria corresponding to the patient’s racial group are necessary to improve the efficiency of WAI in the diagnosis of otosclerosis.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) negatively impacts quality of life. The excessive increase in cardiac sympathetic modulation during standing, which characterizes POTS patients, leads to many symptoms and signs of orthostatic intolerance. Little is known about the consequences of the disease on work performance and its relationship with individual autonomic profiles. Twenty-two POTS patients regularly engaged in working activity (20 females, age 36 ± 12 years) and 18 gender- and age-matched controls underwent a clinical evaluation and filled out the Work Ability Index (WAI) questionnaire. POTS patients completed the Composite Autonomic Symptom Score (COMPASS31) questionnaire, underwent continuous electrocardiogram, blood pressure and respiratory activity recordings while supine and during a 75° head-up tilt (HUT). A power spectrum analysis provided the index of cardiac sympatho-vagal balance (LF/HF). WAI scores were significantly reduced in POTS patients (29.84 ± 1.40) compared to controls (45.63 ± 0.53, p < 0.01). A significant inverse correlation was found between individual WAI and COMPASS31 scores (r = −0.46; p = 0.03), HUT increase in heart rate (r = −0.57; p = 0.01) and LF/HF (r = −0.55; p = 0.01). In POTS patients, the WAI scores were inversely correlated to the intensity of autonomic symptoms and to the excessive cardiac sympathetic activation induced by the gravitational stimulus.

Older adults belong to a target group that has a broad intra-group variation that is presented from a negative stereotype; a target group in need of help. Society has preconceived notions that older adults are "resistant" to technology due to their age-related declines in cognition and motor skills. This results in them being excluded from the development of new technology. Striving for accessible design is becoming more common at the same time as practitioners believe that accessibility contributes to boring and uninteresting design, as well as a limitation in their creativity. The EU introduced a Web Accessibility Directive that follows the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) established design guidelines for accessibility, better known as WCAG. Web Accessibility Initiative “WAI” picked out guidelines from WCAG that are said to contribute to better design for older adults; WAI-AGE. Four design guidelines for navigation were selected from WAI-AGE to be implemented within a prototype to be tested on older adults in a remote user experience test due to COVID-19. Prior to the test, five user experience goals were set to be able to assess whether WAI-AGE guidelines work. For the study, four test participants aged 60-65 years were recruited. The participants had to complete two scenarios and answer three questionnaires. The study applied method triangulation to enhance data collection using the think aloud-method and observation. Data collected from the test underwent a deductive analysis that was examined from a holistic perspective. The results showed that WAI-AGE guidelines for navigation promote a positive user experience with a majority of goals achieved. As the participants had similar needs, there is still room to test on older adults aged 65 and up. This thesis strives to draw attention to the need for older adults to be included in the development of new technology.

ABSTRACT Taiwan becomes old age and less new born baby society. Young population should pay more money to support elders, especially more medical expenses. If the new born baby rate cannot be increased recently, to improve health is the best way to decrease young generation’s loading. Wai Tan Kung is a kind of gentle and low intense exercise. It is good for middle-age and old-age participants’ health. Short Form-36 (SF-36) is a form recognized by World Health Organization to access people’s health. To review the past Wai Tan Kung’s research, most studies focused on the physical impacts. There were few researches to use SF-36 as a tool to study Wai Tan Kung. The objectives of this research were to realize the relationships between the specialization of Wai Tan Kung participants and their self-assessed health by SF-36. Four hundred people were selected in this cross-sectional, descriptive study by using a structured questionnaire. Three hundred fifty-one valid data were used to analyze as the results, the valid corresponding rate was 87.75%. The surveys were conducted during the period of March to April 2008. The results of this study were the followings: 1. The relationship between gender and age of surveyed Wai Tan Kung participants and their self-assessed health (1) There were no significant difference between surveyed Wai Tan Kung participants’ gender and their self-assessed health. (2) The value of vitality (VT) was significantly related to surveyed male Wai Tan Kung participant’s ages. (3) There were no significant differences between surveyed Wai Tan Kung participants’ ages and their self-assessed health. 2. The relationship between the specialization of surveyed Wai Tan Kung participants and the self-assessed health. (1) Most surveyed Wai Tan Kung participants were assessed as the middle level of specialization, the primary level was 2nd high surveyed population, the highest level of specialization was 3rd high ones, new players were the fewest surveyed population. (2)The values of physical functioning(PF), role limitations due to physical health problems (RP), role limitations due to emotional problems (RE), social functioning (SF), bodily pain(BP), vitality (VT), mental health (MH), and general health (GH) were significantly positively related to surveyed one’s specializations. (3) The results of surveyed Wai Tan Kung participants were similar to females. (4) The values of role limitations due to physical health problems (RP), role limitations due to emotional problems (RE), vitality (VT), mental health (MH), and general health (GH) were significantly positively related to surveyed male one’s specializations. 3. The participant’s motivation, to make friends, was significantly related to surveyed Wai Tan Kung participant’s specializations. 4. The participant’s obstacles, not enough time and not affordable physical agility, were significantly related to surveyed Wai Tan Kung participant’s specializations. According to the results of this research, we can encourage people to play Wai Tan Kung to improve their health.

For several decades, the trends for demographic aging has been a concern. The official retirement age is, therefore, increasing, leading to extending working life as well as exposure to occupational risks. Based on this problem, a prospective study with the municipal workers was conducted, aiming at establishing an association between work ability, psychosocial factors, the demands of work activity, self-reported symptomatology and age. In 2015, a sample of 885 workers was obtained and in 2017, 1167 workers. The workers answered a questionnaire, which integrated the WAI, COPSOQ II and an adaptation of the nordic questionnaire. The age had a negative correlation with work ability and the WAI showed a lower average in 2017. It was verified that work ability changes are influenced by psychosocial risk factors, which may have a negative or a positive impact. Age, socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyles, work demands and self-reported musculoskeletal symptoms influence also the work ability. The results evidence the need to manage psychosocial risks to promote health and to prevent work related disorders aiming at maintaining the work ability over the years.
