Анотація:
In this paper, a numerical computer software based on the Finite Prism Method, is proposed in order to design external cylindrical spur gears with a web. It enables computing load sharing, pressure distribution, meshing stiffness and 3D tooth fillet stresses. The software is generally used during the detailed design for optimizing gear meshing. The software is also used to quantify the influences of web design parameters. The process is based on a statistical method: experimental design, that permits studying the influence of parameters. Thus, a simple formula was found in order to estimate the maximum principal stress in the tooth root. The results of the formula were compared with those found in the bibliography. The formula can be useful during the preliminary design for predimensioning webbed spur gears in design department.

Анотація:
Roaming complexity in terrains and unexpected environments pose significant difficulties in robotic exploration of an area. In a broader sense, robots have to face two common tasks during exploration, namely, walking on the drylands and swimming through the water. This research aims to design and develop an amphibious robot, which incorporates a webbed duck feet design to walk on different terrains, swim in the water, and tackle obstructions on its way. The designed robot is compact, easy to use, and also has the abilities to work autonomously. Such a mechanism is implemented by designing a novel robotic webbed foot consisting of two hinged plates. Because of the design, the webbed feet are able to open and close with the help of water pressure. Klann linkages have been used to convert rotational motion to walking and swimming for the animal’s gait. Because of its amphibian nature, the designed robot can be used for exploring tight caves, closed spaces, and moving on uneven challenging terrains such as sand, mud, or water. It is envisaged that the proposed design will be appreciated in the industry to design amphibious robots in the near future.

<p class="Abstrak"><em>Website </em>PROKAL.co merupakan portal berita wilayah Kalimantan, yang diharapkan dapat membantu masyarakat maupun pihak PROKAL sebagai pengguna, agar dapat mencari informasi yang dibutuhkan dengan mudah. Hasil wawancara dengan pihak PROKAL menunjukkan bahwa, terdapat permasalahan <em>usability </em>yang berkaitan dengan faktor keberhasilan <em>usability </em>pada PROKAL.co, yaitu <em>learnability </em>dan <em>errors</em>. Sejak didirikannya PROKAL.co pada tahun 2015, evaluasi terkait <em>usability </em>pada <em>website </em>PROKAL.co belum pernah dilakukan. Hal tersebut mempengaruhi rencana PROKAL dalam melakukan redesain tampilan <em>website</em> PROKAL.co pada tahun 2020, dikarenakan PROKAL tidak mengetahui kebutuhan dan permasalahan yang dialami pengguna dan masih belum memiliki gambaran yang jelas diperbaiki seperti apa tampilan <em>website</em> ke depannya. Oleh karena itu, dilakukan penelitian evaluasi <em>usability </em>menggunakan metode <em>Heuristic </em>agar dapat ditemukan permasalahan dari <em>website</em> PROKAL.co dengan mengacu pada prinsip-prinsip <em>heuristic</em>. Kemudian, untuk dapat melibatkan pengguna PROKAL.co, maka digunakan pula metode <em>Web Usability Evaluation Tool </em>(WEBUSE). Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan 5 tahapan utama, yaitu e<em>stablishing requirement</em><em> </em>untuk menemukan masalah <em>usability</em><em>, design alternatives </em>untuk merancang perbaikan tampilan berupa ide desain<em>, prototyping </em>untuk mengimplementasi dan membangun desain, <em>evaluating </em>untuk mengevaluasi hasil <em>prorotype </em>dengan pihak PROKAL, dan kesimpulan. Berdasarkan hasil evaluasi yang dilakukan, terdapat 2 indikator evaluasi yang sangat memerlukan perbaikan, 7 indikator evaluasi memerlukan perbaikan dengan prioritas tinggi, dan 1 indikator evaluasi memerlukan perbaikan dengan prioritas rendah. Selain itu, dihasilkan usulan rekomendasi tampilan berupa <em>prototype </em>sebanyak 11 desain tampilan perbaikan pada <em>desktop </em>dan 30 desain tampilan <em>mobile</em> <em>website </em>PROKAL.co yang telah disesuaikan dan disetujui dengan kebutuhan PROKAL. Hasil yang diperoleh ini dapat dijadikan acuan oleh <em>website </em>PROKAL.co dalam melakukan perbaikan.</p><p class="Abstrak"> </p><p class="Abstrak"><em><strong>Abstract</strong></em></p><p class="Abstrak"><em>Website PROKAL.co is the Kalimantan regional news portal, this website expected to facilitate its users including PROKAL to search for information that users need. Based on the results of interviews with PROKAL, there are usability issues related to the success factor of website PROKAL.co, there are learnability and errors. Since founded in 2015, the evaluation related to the usability of the website has yet to be performed. It affects PROKAL's plan to redesign the user interface of the website in 2020, because PROKAL still doesn’t know the needs and problems experienced by users also what website will look like in the future. Based on the description above, a usability evaluation study was conducted using the Heuristic method in order to find problems from the PROKAL.co website with reference to heuristic principles. Then, to be able to involve PROKAL.co users, the Web Usability Evaluation Tool (WEBUSE) method is also used. This research was conducted with 5 main stages, those are establishing requirements to find usability problems, design alternatives to design the improvements with the form of design ideas, protoyping to implement and build designs, evaluating to evaluate the prototype results, and conclusions</em>. <em>Based on the results of the evaluation, there are 2 evaluation indicators that really need improvement, 7 evaluation indicators need improvement with high priority, and 1 evaluation indicator require improvement with low priority. In addition, there were proposed recommendations for user interface in the form of 11 prototype user interface designs for desktop improvements and 30 designs for the mobile website PROKAL.co that have been adjusted and approved to the needs of PROKAL. The results obtained can be used as a reference by the PROKAL.co website in making improvements.</em></p><div> </div><p class="Abstrak" align="center"> </p><p class="Abstrak" align="center"> </p>

Анотація:
The core of the architectural curriculum is based on the design studio which focuses on learning by doing. The learning process in the design studio is takes place in critic sessions. These sessions are kind of communication of ideas and transmitting of knowledge from instructor to student. In contrast to other disciplines, in the architectural design education the evaluation and the assessment are the important part of the learning and teaching process. The Jury system is a traditional architectural learning assessment tool. In this system the student present his/her work in the front of the jury and get feedback or criticism. According to Webster (2006), Jury is the most performative stage of education where the student and agency (the discipline of architecture-as represented by the critics) actually interact. (Webster, 2006). The aim of this study was to reveal the perceptions of architectural design students’ about the ‘Jury system’ as an grading system in architectural design studios. The participants for this study included second, third and fourth grade architectural design students enrolled in the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of Mersin University during the 2014-2015 school year. To collect data, each participant was asked to complete the prompt “A jury is like . . . …because . . . …..” . Phenomenological design was used in the study. The content analysis technique was used to analyze and interpret the study data. The detailed discussion will be presented in full paper.

Attaining prominence in the post-war era, Saul Bellow is one of the most widely read and intellectually eclectic novelists of the Jewish American School.1 Bellow's frequent references to Romanticism form a dominant design within his culturally diverse fiction.2 Taken from Bellow's Herzog, my title indicates the two levels on which Bellow's Romantic allusions operate. At one level, this ‘webbed’ pattern of ‘golden lines’ suggests how Bellow interlaces his own prose with the poetry and philosophy of British Romanticism to govern readers' responses to his portrayal of epiphanies. On another, Herzog's moment of inter-connected vision signals Bellow's investment in a Coleridgean and Wordsworthian imagination that reveals the all-pervasive spirit of the ‘[o]ne Life within us and abroad’3. This metaphysical dimension to Bellow's web of ‘golden lines’ finds a further affinity with Shelley's later notion of the ‘web of being’.4

Анотація:
The Synchronous online argumentation system is highly needed to facilitate learning activity in this internet era. To gain deeper insights about this important issue, this study developed nine principles based on Cognitive Load, User Interface, and User Experience to redesign a system. With this framework, 48 (forty-eight) students of Chi-Ying High School had tested with two prototypes, and the second prototype used the nine principles. The systems were measured with Web-Based Learning Environment (WEBLEI) and System Usability Test (SUS). The result of WEBLEI measurement shows that the second prototype gives better result and shows higher user acceptance than the first prototype. The result of SUS measurement shows that the usability of the second prototype is better than on the first prototype with (4.43) SUS score difference. The result shows that the use of nine principles that applied to the second prototype does increase the usability and acceptance of the students.

Legimus är ett online bibliotek som tillhör Myndigheten för tillgängliga medier. Myndigheten för tillgängliga medier arbetar för att ge männi-skor med olika förutsättningar tillgång till litteratur och samhällsin-formation. Legimus är ett verktyg som används för att ge människor med läsnedsättningar tillgång till litteratur. Legimus har en webbplats som användare kan få tillgången att läsa litteratur på. Som ett viktigt koncept i inom interaktionen mellan människan och da-torn påverkar användbarheten och webbplatsens användarvänlighet besökarens upplevelse. På grund av detta fokuserar detta arbete på an-vändarvänligheten på Legimus webbplats. Syftet med detta arbete är att göra en fallstudie kring vad som gör Legi-mus användarvänlig samt att fokusera på vald målgrupp för att ta reda på svårigheter och vad de förväntar sig av användningen av den valda webbplatsen. Den valda frågeställningen är följande: Har Legimus lyck-ats attrahera sin prioriterade målgrupp hos studenterna på Högskolan Dalarna med webbsidans design och användarvänlighet. För att utföra detta arbete har en kvalitativ metod valts där studenter på Högskolan Dalarna intervjuas, därefter analyseras resultaten med hjälp av fyra teman som intervjufrågorna är uppdelade i. Resultatet visar att respondenterna hade olika uppfattningar kring an-vändarvänligheten. En del respondenter ansåg webbplatsen vara otydlig till en början, men med tiden lärt sig använda webbplatsen. Majoriteten av respondenterna ansåg webbsidan vara enkel samt tydlig. Responden-terna fick möjligheten att ta fram deras egna synpunkter angående webbplatsen. Där hade majoriteten av respondenterna förslag på för-bättringar av webbsidans design. Den slutsats som dragit är inte att respondenterna upplevt webbsidans design lockande. Respondenterna ansåg att de hade använts sig av webbplatsen även om designen var sämre med tanke på behovet av Le-gimus verktyg. Majoriteten av användarna ansåg att webbplatsen var användarvänlig men för att säkerställa min slutsats avslutades intervjun med frågan om respondenterna ansåg webbplatsen vara användarvän-lig. Samtliga respondenterna ansåg den vara användarvänlig, vilket stär-ker min slutsats.
Legimus is an online library owned by the Myndigheten för tillgängliga medier. Myndigheten för tillgängliga medier provides people with dif-ferent circumstances the access to public literature and information. Legimus is a tool that enables people with reading difficulties to access literature. Legimus has a website where users can read the literature. As an important concept in the interaction between man and computer, the usability and user-friendliness of the website affects the visitor's ex-perience. Because of this, this work focuses on the user-friendliness of the Legimus website. The purpose of this work is to do a case study on what makes Legimus user-friendly and to focus on the selected target group to find out diffi-culties and what they expect from the use of the selected website. The chosen question is as follows: Has Legimus succeeded in attracting its priority target group of the students at Dalarna University with the web-site's design and user-friendliness. To carry out this work, a qualitative method has been chosen where stu-dents at Dalarna University are interviewed, after which the results are analysed with the help of four themes into which the interview ques-tions are divided. The results show that the respondents had different views on user-friendliness. Some respondents considered the website to be unclear at first, but over time learned to use the website. Most of the respondents considered the website to be simple and clear. The respondents were given the opportunity to express their own views regarding the website. There, most respondents had suggestions for improvements to the de-sign of the website. The conclusion drawn is not that the respondents found the website's design attractive. The respondents considered that they had used the website even if the design was worse given the need for Legimus webpage. Most of the users considered the website to be user-friendly, but to ensure my conclusion, the interview ended with the question of whether the respondents considered the website to be user-friendly. All the respondents considered it to be user-friendly, which strengthens my conclusion.

Syfte: Företag har svårt att positionera sig på webben då de misslyckas att utveckla sina webbsidor för att stödja dess varumärkesstrategi. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur ett företag kan tillämpa designstrategi ur ett användarcentrerat designperspektiv för att stödja företagets övergripande varumärkesstrategi på webben. Kunskapslucka: Denna studie har identifierat en kunskapslucka vad gäller hur företag fastställer och verkställer designstrategi för att stödja övergripande varumärkesstrategi på webben. Metod: Studien avser att undersöka tillämpning av designstrategi genom att ta fram ett designförslag som baserats på en användarcentrerad designprocess. För att göra detta har intervjuer med experter samt expertutvärdering av webbsidor utförts för att kartlägga en billeverantörs återförsäljares domän, baserat på motsvarande strategi för köpresa som är avsedd för att leda besökaren till billeverantörens produkt- och tjänsteutbud som representeras av återförsäljare och dess webbsidor. Denna datainsamling ligger till grund för persona och kontextscenarion som översätts till identifierade krav som motsvarar produktens designstrategi. Designstrategin ligger sedan till grund för det skapande momentet i den användarcentrerade designprocessen, där iterativ design leder till förädlande av framtagna ramverksskisser till interaktiv prototyp. Resultat och slutsats: Resultatet av studien som var en framtagen interaktiv prototyp visar att användarcentrerad design som tillämpar designstrategi, genom att fastställa företagets och användarens mål och behov samt innehålls- och funktionalitetskrav, är ett alternativ som tillåter strukturerad förädling av en webbsida till den punkt att webbsidan uppfyller sin designstrategi. Resultatet visar också att beroende på hur grundlig en kartläggning är och hur välformulerad designstrategin är påverkar hur väl framtagen webbsida, vare sig det är en prototyp eller slutprodukt, uppfyller sitt syfte.
Purpose: Corporations experience difficulties positioning themselves on the web as a result of not developing their websites in a way that is inline with their overall business strategy. The purpose of this study is to explore how corporations should apply design strategy, based on a user-centered design perspective, to support their overall business strategy on the web. Originality/value: This study has identified a knowledge gap in terms of how corporations define and apply design strategy in order to support their overall business strategy on the web. Methodology: This study aims to research the application of design strategy by creating a prototype through the use of a user-centered design process. This was done by interviewing experts as well as evaluating websites, in order to explore the domain of a car manufacturers retailers, which was based on the corresponding strategy of leading the visitor to the car manufacturers offerings that are represented by the retailers and their websites. This data collection was the foundation in the creation of a persona and context scenarios that was translated into identified needs that represented the products design strategy. The design strategy in turn was the foundation for the creating phase of the user-centered design process, where iterative design lead to refining framework sketches and an interactive prototype. Findings and conclusion: The study which resulted in an interactive prototype shows that user-centered design, which applies design strategy by defining the corporations and the users goals and needs, is an alternative that allows for structured refinement to the point that the website fulfills its design strategy. The results also show that depending on how well the domain exploration is executed as well as how well the design strategy is defined will affect the resulting website and to what extent it fulfills its purpose, whether it’s is still a prototype or if it’s the end result.

The aim of this thesis is to study a number of standards and theories, from the two research areas human-computer interaction and psychology, about how a graphical user interface (GUI) should be composed in order to facilitate interaction between humans and computers. Special emphasis is put on how the GUI should take into consideration the strengths and limitations of human cognition and perception. A study of three web catalogues shows how these theories appear when concretised. The following questions are answered in this thesis:What guidelines and styleguides can be found that specify the design of a user-friendly GUI?How do a few library catalogues on the web match a selection of these design principles?The guidelines are extracted from literature concerning human-computer interaction, psychology, automated library systems and web design. The standards are ISO 9241 Ergonomic requirements for office work with visual display terminals, and standardised icons from the International Federation of Library Associations. The web catalogues were studied through a questionnaire handed to five people. These catalogues belong to Lund University Library, Frank L. Cubly Library and Spencer Library Media Center. The different aspects studied were icons, information, terminology, orientation, graphics, colours and moving objects. In some cases the catalogues match the guidelines studied, in some cases they do not. Reasons affecting the choice of guidelines are the application, the users and their work, and the hardware. Reasons why guidelines are not used can be that designers do not understand or know them, or that they have found better solutions.

This exam work has been done for an external client, Snickars Records a record shop specialized in vinyl records with a niches in dance music. The shop is located at Heleneborgsgatan 5A södermalm, Stockholm. The client was in a big need for a new webshop due to the old one was missing a lot of functionality. The project resulted in an almost complete product that’s ready to be implemented and was built after the specifications that was set together with our client. This report describes from start to finish and how we have proceeded in the execution of the project.

Idag erbjuder webben enorma mängder likartade produkter och information vilket har medfört att användarna ställer allt högre krav på webbplatsens innehåll. Om webbplatsen upplevs som förvirrande, om det tar tid att hitta information eller utföra en viss handling – fortsätter användarna vidare till nästa webbplats. Resultatet blir att företagen som vill synas på webben måste investera allt större resurser för att stärka sin position på marknaden. Resurssatsningar kan ha betydande påverkan för företagets ekonomi. För att kunna utveckla användarvänliga och användbara system, använder sig designern av användarcentrerad systemdesign, en process som fokuserar på användare och användbarhet genom hela utvecklingen. Den här studien syftar på att skapa förståelse för vilka förutsättningar som behövs vid utformningen av webbplatser samt vilka kunskaper designern bör ha för att lyckas i sitt arbete. Den teoretiska studien har gett mig större förståelse för olika begrepp inom ämnet samt en uppfattning om vilka rekommendationer och uppfattningar som råder kring utvecklingen av webbplatser. Den empiriska undersökningen bör ge en förevisning om vilka förutsättningar anses vara betydande för webbplatsens utformning utifrån en designers perspektiv. De slutsatser som jag har kommit fram till, härleds från analysen och den empiriska undersökningen. Lyckade webbplatser är en blandning av tre typer av design: grafisk, informations- och interaktionsdesign. Fokus kan läggas på en av dem beroende på vad webbplatsen ska erbjuda användarna, men det viktiga är att samspelet mellan de olika designtyperna hjälper användarna att hitta det som de behöver. För att överleva på webben, behöver företag hålla sig uppdaterade hela tiden om vad som händer inom området samt vilka nya idéer och lösningar som har kommit fram. Анотація:
The aim of this thesis was twofold, on the one hand to compile a set of usability and accessibility guidelines in order to establish the characteristics of a user friendly website, and on the other to test these guidelines on eight library webcourses with user education to see how well they adhered to the guidelines. The methods used were literature survey and source studies. The guidelines found in the literature survey were divided into four different categories: document properties, structure and navigability, visual characteristics and accessibility. In order to establish the adequacy of the guidelines, I examined reference sources, mostly on the web. To a certain extent this examination has been based on HCI Human-Computer interaction theories. Eight sources were selected. They consisted of module based web courses in information literacy. Six of the eight courses were from the USA, one was British and one was Swedish. The web courses were examined and analysed in regard to the four categories. The result of the study was that six of the eight web courses well adhered to the criteria accessibility and usability. They were easy to access, downloaded fast and were easy to read. In conclusion, they were easy to use.

More understanding is needed of how the visual design affects the user experience of trustworthiness in web design. Research has shown that the aesthetic part of web design is more important than previously thought and that more knowledge is needed in this area. The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate how the visual design affects the user’s experience of trustworthiness. This is to create an understanding of which parts of a websites visual appearance affect the users experience of trustworthiness more or less. This study was based on the Research Model (Figure 1) by Fasial et al. (2017), which was the result of a study that examined different kind of factors that affected trust, satisfaction and loyalty among website users. The Research model was in this study modified and supplemented with additional factors that were considered important based on what emerged regarding trustworthiness from previous research. Two different housing agency websites were studied as an attempt to capture the user’s true perception of trustworthiness, where a basis for credibility considered to be preconceived. As data collection, to capture conceivable situations, user tests were created with suitable scenarios in an attempt to capture possible situations and to get the flexibility required to capture user’s feelings and experiences. The analysis showed that the visual design evokes emotions such as frustration and that the web pages can be perceived cluttered due to the visual design. But the most important factors were the interaction and content parts of the website, where both housing agencies were less successful in this case. Although the findings show that the two websites in this study can improve their visual design within these parts – this study, as also previous research showed, that the factors in a way belong together and affect each other. Therefore, it is important to use the developed model as a tool to avoid missing important factors when creating/reviewing a website that may affect the user’s experience of trustworthiness

Forskning har visat att den estetiska biten inom webbdesign har en större betydelse än man tidigare tro och a det därför behövs mer kunskap inom dea område. Därför har den här studiens syfte varit a undersöka just hur en webbsidas visuella design påverkar användarens upplevelse av trovärdighet. Dea för a skapa en förståelse över vilka delar av det visuella som påverkar användaren mer eller mindre. Den här studien utgick från Research model (Figur 1) av Faisal et al. (2017), som var ett resultat av en studie som handlade om a undersöka faktorer som påverkade förtroende, tillfredsställelse och lojalitet hos användarna. Modellen modifierades och kompletterades med ytterligare faktorer som ansågs viktiga utifrån vad som kom fram gällande trovärdighet ur tidigare forskning. Som försök för a fånga användarnas verkliga trovärdighetsuppfaning studerades två olika bostadsförmedlingswebbsidor där en grund till trovärdighet ansågs vara förutfaad. För a fånga tänkbara situationer skapades användartest med passande scenarion som datainsamling för a få den flexibilitet som krävdes för a fånga användarnas känslor och upplevelser. Analysen visade a den visuella designen framkallar känslor som frustration och a webbsidor kan uppfaas röriga på grund av den visuella designen, men att interaktionen och innehållet var de viktigaste faktorerna där båda bostadsförmedlarna lyckades mindre bra. Även om fynden visade a just dessa två webbsidor kan förbära sin visuella design inom dessa delar - så visade denna studie, som även tidigare forskning visat, a faktorerna på e sä hör ihop och påverkar varandra. Därför är det till fördel a använda sig av den framtagna modellen som grund för a undvika a gå miste om viktiga delar vid skapandet/granskandet av en webbsida som kan påverka användarens upplevelse av trovärdighet.

Det har blivit allt vanligare att vi idag använder våra mobila enheter till att besöka webben. I detta examensarbete undersöks vilka centrala designprinciper en designer bör eftersträva när avsikten är att förenkla användningen av en webbplats i en statisk och en rörlig situation via den mobila enheten. Examensarbetet innefattar en litteraturgenomgång, observationsintervjuer vid två tillfällen och en prototyputveckling. Det första intervjutillfället identifierade de grundläggande designprinciperna som sedan stod till grund för prototypen. Det andra intervjutillfället genomfördes mot prototypen med samma individer. Det som undersöktes var om de grundläggande designprinciperna förenklade användningen av en webbplats via den mobila enheten. En jämförelse mellan båda intervjutillfällena genomfördes för att sammanställa de centrala designprinciperna.
It has become increasingly common that we now use our mobile devices to visit the web. This thesis examines the central design principles a designer should strive for when it is intended to simplify the use of a website in a static and variable situation trough a mobile device. The thesis includes a literature review, interviews on two occasions and a prototype development. The first interviews identified the fundamental design principles which then became the basis for the prototype. The second interviews were conducted towards the prototype with the same individuals. It examined if the fundamental design principles simplified the use of a website trough the mobile device. A comparison of the two interviews was conducted to compile the central design principles.

Abstract Our webs are wide, very thin, two-dimensional, continua arising commonly as a material in transport in machine systems. Though they are thin, webs often require modeling as plates or shells, albeit very thin and flexible ones, because even small bending stiffness distinguishes their behaviors from membranes in critical ways. Technological applications generating interest in web mechanics include the manufacture and handling of paper where wide sheets are transported by rollers at the highest possible speed, thereby maximizing productivity. Material handling problems of a similar type also arise with tissues, films, magnetic media, textiles, fabrics, polymer sheets, and the like. In a technical world pressing for ever higher speeds of stable transport, the web instabilities of wrinkling and flutter commonly bound the productivity of a technological process. These instabilities can result in permanent damage or rupture of the material and disruption of the manufacturing process. Consequently, the presentation today addresses some findings on webs that relate to their modeling, the prediction and causes of wrinkling, and the effect of roller misalignment on web behavior during transport. To allow us to maintain this focus, the rich collection of works on membrane structures, including modeling of inflated membranes, space structures and fiber reinforced membranes will not be part of our discussion. For attention to interesting membrane developments readers might examine Reissner (1938), Steigmann and Pipkin (1989), Jenkins and Leonard (1991), Li and Steigmann (1993), and Haseganu and Steigmann (1994). The most important topic of web flutter caused by air flows over the web surfaces will not be addressed, though recent experimental findings can be found in Chang and Moretti (1992) and Nguyen (1993). Theories modeling the flow and web in these coupled problems tend to underestimate the flutter speeds. This problem area is one of great importance.

Abstract The mass of the air surrounding a moving belt leads to a number of forces normal to the belt: hydrodynamically induced inertia, Coriolis force, and centrifugal force. These forces act in concert with those generated by the belt’s own inertia to govern out-of-plane dynamics. Their effect is to reduce stability and limit the safe running speed. These detrimental consequences can be reduced through management of the air flow around the belt. An analysis of the governing partial differential equations is presented; experiments on the aerodynamic interaction terms are reported; and a numerical simulation method for belt dynamics is outlined.

Abstract Recently, several new machining techniques have been developed which have driven dramatic changes in the manufacture of aerospace components with thin ribs and webs. There are many such components in commercial and military aircraft, and until recently these components we fabricated as sheet metal assemblies. Through an improved understanding of the dynamic interaction between the tool and workpiece, it has now become economically competitive to create components with thin ribs and webs as monolithic units machined from a solid block by milling. Ribs are those thin structures created at the periphery of the end mill, as opposed to webs, which are the thin structures created at the face of the end mill. It is easy to see that as the ribs and webs become thinner, the stiffnesses will decrease, and chatter will become more problematic. Chatter during the machining of such parts can result in damage to the part (even cutting through the thin structure) or at least poor surfaces which require hand finishing. This paper outlines the basic technology required to produce these kinds of components efficiently, and cites several examples.

Abstract The literature on thin, narrow axially moving materials is diverse and mature. However, few investigators have studied the behavior of thin, wide translating continua. This paper and a sequel evaluate the effect of out-of-plane, roller misalignment on the equilibrium and dynamic behavior of wide, axially moving, paper and textile webs. In this paper, a fully nonlinear shell theory that incorporates transverse shear strains is developed and used to determine the equilibrium deformation caused by roller misalignment. This model allows for consideration of large, possibly intentional, roller misalignment. The equations of equilibrium are reduced by assuming the web is deformed into a right helicoid. The resulting nonlinear, ordinary, differential equations are solved both numerically and analytically, employing perturbation. It is found that the longitudinal, membrane stress increases with the magnitude of roller misalignment. However, in a web with free longitudinal edges, the lateral, membrane stress is compressive for any roller misalignment. The translation speed acts, by way of centrifugal tensioning, to increase the lateral, membrane stress. Example results highlight other important conclusions concerning the equilibrium response of webs to out-of-plane roller misalignment.
