Background: The aural plaque is a papillomatosis variant that occurs in the inner surface of the auricular pavilion of equine. The disease is associated with economic losses in the equine sector, since it reduces the commercial value of the severely affected animals. However, there are few studies evaluating the occurrence of aural plaques in different breeds and equine populations in Brazil and in other countries. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the frequency, clinical and histological characteristics of the aural plaques in working horses from Lages, SC, Brazil.Materials, Methods & Results: Seventy-three crossbreed equines were used, including 48 males and 25 females between 1 and 25 years old, and that were used as working horses (traction) in the urban perimeter in the city of Lages, SC. The findings related to breed, age, sex, presence or absence of compatible lesions with aural plaques, anatomical location and lesion characteristics were evaluated and annotated. The lesions were photographed and drawn on paper to determine the size and distribution in the ear and were reevaluated for a period of two months with an interval of 30 days between each evaluation. The number of aural plaques was determined by manual counting in each auricular pavilion, which were divided into four quadrants (left and right upper, right and left lower). When the plaque was located in the median region of the quadrants, it was described in the region of the greatest location. To evaluate the histopathologic features, three equines that bearer typical lesions of aural plate were submitted to a biopsy. The statistical analysis of the data was performed through the descriptive analysis, and the chi-square test was used to identify the relationship between sex, presence or not of aural plaque and anatomical location of the lesions, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by the Tukey’s test to determine the most affected quadrant, being accepted a level of significance of 5%. The frequency of affected animals by aural plaques was 56.16% (41/73), being 68% (17/25) females and 50% (24/48) males, with no predilection for sex. The superficial, depigmented and punctate lesions frequently were the most observed, being unilaterals in 63.41% (26/41) and bilaterals in 36.59% (15/41) of the animals. There was a difference for the distribution of the unilateral or bilateral lesions and the upper quadrants of the inner face of the ear frequently were the most affected. The regression of the size or number of plaques was not observed during the period of clinical follow-up. Besides, it was not observed significant increase in lesion size or appearance of new aural plaques during the evaluation period. Pain or itching were not associated with the lesions. The histopathological characteristics consisted in pronounced hyperplasia of the epidermis, deepening to the dermis, diffuse moderate orthokeratotic hyperkeratinization and acanthosis.Discussion: The high frequency of aural plaques in the study may be related to the work environment and breeding of these animals. However, more studies are needed to evaluate the epidemiological characteristics of this disease in raised and used for traction horses in the urban environment. The arrangement of the plaques on the surface of the ear was higher in the regions of the upper quadrants, suggesting that this distribution may be related to the greater exposure and access of the region to the viral transmission through insects and arthropods implicated as vectors. No regression and no increase in size or appearance of the new aural plaques were also described in previous studies. Besides, the absence of pain or itching associated with the lesions confirm which the lesions are asymptomatic. Clinical and histopathological characteristics were similar to those previously described in horses of the other breeds.

The equine species, which includes donkeys, mules, horses, and ponies, have made major contributions to human civilizations all throughout the world. The Indian livestock sector, after an initial decline in period from 2007 - 2012, staged a remarkable comeback during the period from 2012-2019 with an impressive overall growth rate of 4.8%. However, the total population of horses, ponies, mules and donkeys in India is 0.55 million as per the latest livestock census, a decrease by 51.9% over the previous livestock census (2012). The ‘decreasing utility’ due to increasing vehicles and urbanization has been considered as factors for the drastic dip in population. This paper, based on secondary data, aims to provide a concise summary of the current status, growth rate, distribution patterns, and factors leading to the decline in the population of working equines in India. Tabular presentations and graphical representations have been utilized for easy analysis and comparison of population trends across different years.

A study was conducted in 2015 to assess prevalence of common gastrointestinal parasites in 186 working horses and donkeys in Lahore, Gujranwala, Multan and Peshawar Districts of Pakistan. Fresh faecal samples were collected from the ground and examined for gastrointestinal worms using McMaster Technique. Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was non-significant higher in Peshawar (95%) followed by Gujranwala (85.7%), Lahore (84.3 %) and Multan (51.3%) respectively. There was a significant difference (p<0.05) in the prevalence of parascaris equourum among the four districts whereas no significant difference was observed in strongyle and oxyuris equi infection among the four districts. A significant difference (p<0.05) was observed in strongylus spp and Parascaris equourum between horses and donkeys. Donkeys have significantly (p<0.05) higher prevalence (92.8%) of GIT parasitic infection than horses (78.3%). Among age groups, younger animals (1-5 years) have the highest significant prevalence 93.7% followed by 76% and 84.6% for 10-15 and 15 -20 years old animals respectively. It is concluded that working equine in Pakistan has highest gastrointestinal parasitic load of Strongylus spp and Parascaris equorum. Raising awareness regarding gastrointestinal parasites and improved management practices are recommended to control GIT parasites. Key Words: Working equine, Prevalence, Parasites

ABSTRACT: The working equid population in Corumbá, Southern Pantanal, is very large and has a crucial role in the main economic activity of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, the beef cattle industry. The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of equine infectious anaemia (EIA) in working equids of ranches in the municipality of Corumbá, by the official agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test, and evaluate the adoption of the Programme for the Prevention and Control of Equine Infectious Anaemia proposed by Embrapa Pantanal and official entities in the 1990s. From September to November 2009, forty ranches distributed through the area of the municipality were visited, and serum samples were obtained from 721 equines and 232 mules. According to previous publications and the present data, it was concluded that the prevalence of EIA in this population has increased from 18.17% to 38.60%, which represents at this time approximately 13,000 infected animals. There was no significant difference between the apparent prevalence of equines and mules. It was also verified that the control programme was not known by the greater part of the interviewed ranch owners, managers and foremen and, in their perception, EIA is not a primary threat to address. Among the studied variables, the serologic testing practice significantly reduced the risk for the presence of EIA seropositivity, as well as the separation of riding equipment and segregation of seropositives.

Twelve working horses were utilized in a completely randomized design to examine the efficacy of curcumin as an anti-parasitic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial. Horses were randomly assigned to either the control (CON) containing no curcumin or to the curcumin (CUR) treatment which was dosed at 15 g of 500 mg/g of 95% curcumin per day (n = 6/treatment). Fecal samples were collected on day 0 before initiation of treatments and then daily for 30 days. Feces from working horses were evaluated for shedding of Streptococcus bovis/ equinus complex, Clostridium difficile, and Clostridium perfringens. Inflammation was observed through erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) via jugular venipuncture every 3-4 days. Horses were fed treatments at 1100 daily and samples were collected prior to administration of treatments. Dosing curcumin at the recommended rate of 15 g per horse had no effect (P ≥ 0.58) on total fecal egg count, strongyles, or ascarids. There was a day effect (P ≤ 0.05) with parasite shedding mimicking the parasites life cycle. Treatment had no effect on ESR (P ≤ 0.42); however, a day effect (P ≤ 0.001) was observed with the CUR horses with ESR decreasing (P = 0.0006) on d 14 and d 21 compared to d 0. There was no treatment (P = 0.34) or day effect (P = 0.53) on concentration of Clostridium perfringens. Similarly, there was no treatment effect for Clostridium difficile (P = 0.51) or SBEC (P = 0.69). Day had an effect (P = 0.0001) on Clostridium difficile, for both CON and CUR horses with all horses having higher concentrations on d 0 and d 1 compared to all other days. Concentrations of SBEC were affected by day (P = 0.05) with concentrations increasing on different days for both CON and CUR horses. Data would suggest that curcumin has a potential benefit as an anti-inflammatory for working horses starting at d 14 when being dosed at 15 g of 500 mg/g of 95% curcumin. This dosage for 30 days however had no additional benefits as an anti-parasitic and anti-microbial. Curcumin has a potentially negative effect on the GIT by increasing opportunistic bacteria and more research is needed to further evaluate the anti-microbial and anti-parasitic effects of curcumin in horses.

Syftet med pilotstudien var att undersöka hur klienter som deltog i hästunderstödd behandling (n = 13) till följd av psykisk ohälsa såg på relationen till hästen och dess anknytningsfrämjande och alliansskapande egenskaper, samt i vilken utsträckning respondenterna hade ett auktoritärt förhållningssätt gentemot hästen. För jämförelse användes en grupp fritidsryttare (n = 23). Klientgruppen rekryterades genom intresseföreningen Organisationen för Hästunderstödda Insatser (OHI) och fritidsryttargruppen från två ridskolor. Deltagarna fick genomföra en enkät med frågor avseende anknytningsfrämjande kvaliteter i relationen till hästen, samt vilka relationsskapande egenskaper de ansåg hästen besitta. Resultatet indikerade att båda grupperna i hög utsträckning såg positiva egenskaper i hästen och såg relationen till hästen som positiv. Resultaten indikerade att klientgruppen i högre utsträckning såg egenskaper och relationella kvaliteter i hästen som kan ses som anknytningsfrämjande och alliansskapande. Fritidsryttargruppen uppgav i högre utsträckning ett auktoritärt förhållningssätt gentemot hästen. Trots det begränsade urvalet och att resultatet inte genomgående var entydigt, tolkas resultaten som att det finns belägg för vidare utforskning av ämnet och undersökning av frågeställningen för ett större urval med en reviderad kvantitativ enkät då pilotstudien fann signifikanta skillnader mellan grupperna.<br>The purpose of this pilot study was to explore clients undertaking equine assisted treatment for mental illness (n = 13) view of the horses attachment and working alliance facilitating abilities. Further, the study aimed to explore to which extent the respondents viewed themselves as being authoritative in relation to the horse. For comparison a group of recreational equestrians (n = 23) were used. The respondents in the client group were recruited from the association Organisationen för Hästunderstödda Insatser (OHI) and the recreational equestrians were recruited from two riding schools. The participants undertook a survey with questions regarding attachment facilitating qualities in their relationship with the horse, and which relationship facilitating characteristics they experienced in the horse. The results indicated that the respondents in both groups over all viewed the horses’ characteristics and their relationship with the horse as positive. The results indicated that the client group to a higher extent regarded the horse as having characteristics and relational qualities that could be viewed as alliance and attachment facilitating. The recreational equestrians reported an authoritative approach toward the horse to a larger degree than the client group. Although there were limitations regarding the size of the sample, and coherence in the results, the results indicated that there are grounds for future research of the subject and research question at hand, with the use of a larger population and a revised survey, as the pilot study did find significant differences between the groups.

Working equids, vital to many of the world’s most economically vulnerable people, face many challenges to their health, welfare and productivity. In The Gambia, West Africa, appropriate nutrition, husbandry and veterinary assistance are limited, while infectious disease is a constant threat, particularly the parasitic disease trypanosomosis. The prevalence of generalised trypanosomosis in working equids attending the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust show in 2013 using PCR was 55.4%. Trypanosoma congolense was most prevalent (47.0%), followed by T. vivax (15.7%) and T. brucei s.l. (2.4%). Mixed infections were common (9.4%) and T. congolense/ T. vivax coinfection appeared to have the greatest clinical effect. Spread of T. brucei parasites to the central nervous system (CNS), confirmed using immunohistochemistry and PCR, causes severe CNS dysfunction. Horses showed spastic paraparesis that rapidly progressed to recumbency, while donkeys more often displayed somnolence and cranial nerve dysfunction with a slower deterioration. The disease was fatal in all cases. Histopathology revealed diffuse lymphocytic-plasmacytic meningoencephalo-myelitis with marked perivascular cuffing, particularly in the white matter. T cells were prominent in this first study of lymphocyte distribution in equine CNS trypanosomosis. Extensive reactive astrocytosis was also demonstrated. Currently, a reliable diagnosis of equine CNS requires post mortem samples. The loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay was assessed for the diagnosis of equine T. brucei infection for the first time in both blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). An entomological survey showed that Glossina morsitans submorsitans was common in dry woodland areas while G. palpalis gambiensis was found in riverine habitats. The prevalence of T. brucei in the midguts of Glossina specimens was 1.7% and equine DNA was found in tsetse bloodmeals, providing evidence for ongoing interaction between host, parasite and vector. Atylotus agrestis, vector of T. vivax and T. congolense, was present in large numbers in village areas. Equine DNA was detected in one A. agrestis specimen, however, no evidence of T. brucei in association with these flies was found. Finally, microsatellite genotyping was used for the first time to investigate T. brucei populations in equine trypanosomosis in The Gambia. The results revealed a heterogenous population, providing further evidence for a tsetse-transmitted mode of transmission. No evidence of population clustering by disease type or host species was detected, suggesting that host factors determine pathogenesis. Initial evidence for the involvement of the tsetse vector supports evaluation of vector control methods although further analysis of T. brucei populations in insect vectors and their relationships with those infecting equids is recommended. The clinicopathological descriptions will be of use in further study of equine CNS trypanosomosis and the development of new therapeutics and LAMP has the potential to facilitate research, especially in the study of CNS infection which has, up to now, relied on post mortem confirmation.

This study explored how public health nurses (PHNs) work to address health inequities. Cultural safety was used as a theoretical lens. Methods for interpretive description were relied on for data collection and analysis. Data sources included interviews with 14 staff from an urban public health unit and document review of three policies. Two themes emerged: building relationships and working within a frame. Building relationships involved: delivering the message, taking the time, being present, the right nurse and learning from communities. The public health frame influenced the capacity of PHNs to address health inequities through: culture and stereotypes, public health standards, setting priorities, inclusion of priority populations, responding to change and (re)action through reorganization. Discursive formations of priority populations, and partnership and collaboration, were revealed. Findings highlighted downstream public health approaches to addressing health inequities. Importantly, embedding cultural safety as a framework for public health practice can guide upstream action.

<p> Principals are increasingly responsible for ensuring an equitable learning environment in their schools. The development of a disposition to meet this responsibility is an under-researched area. This study was a qualitative narrative analysis of the stories of five white, female, elementary principals from the same suburban school district who were interviewed to understand where their disposition may originate and how their disposition manifests itself in their self-reported decisions and actions. The following question became the focus of the research: What do principals report are the factors that support or challenge their decision-making regarding students and families with diverse characteristics? A qualitative inquiry method with an emphasis on narrative analysis was used to identify themes. These themes were illuminated using the lens of Bourdieu's sociological theory of habitus and field. Principal narratives of equity fell into two broad thematic areas of capital and management. Principals who participated in this study build social capital, which is then used as a currency to create and support equity with the other habitus and structures on the field. According to the analysis of the data, the stances principals take to provide equity include a managerial orientation. The analyses of the narratives reveal that where principals stand for equity is evident through the stories they tell rather than their statements of what they believe and value. This study suggests that building upon the stories of personal experiences may be a good starting point for professional development around issues of equity. These opportunities could strengthen a principal's ability to both understand and articulate a concrete set of self-expectations for equity. Additionally, Bourdieu's theory of habitus and field presents a way to understand a principal's actions and intentions on their field of work. </p>

Método – Foi utilizada a Engenharia de Software Baseada em Evidência, realizando um Mapeamento Sistemático sobre equipes na Engenharia de Software. Foi realizada uma busca manual em revisões sistemáticas anteriores. Além disso, foi realizada uma síntese integrativa mais detalhada dos estudos que relacionam diversas variáveis com o desempenho do trabalho em equipe. Resultado – Foram encontrados 117 pesquisadores que publicaram pesquisas sobre equipes afiliados a 71 instituições de pesquisa em 59 estudos. Nestas pesquisas, foram estudados 189 diferentes relacionamentos entre variáveis, sendo que 64 destes relacionamentos envolvem o fator desempenho. As principais variáveis que afetam a desempenho da equipe são: personalidade, coesão, comunicação, autonomia, e habilidade dos membros. Conclusões – Foram observados um conjunto de informações demográficas e metodológicas que ajudam a entender melhor a pesquisa sobre equipes na Engenharia de Software. Alguns fatores estão mais consolidados, como a personalidade que tem 12 relacionamentos afetando desempenho. Outros precisam ser melhor estudados, como a coesão cuja pesquisa ainda apresenta resultados controversos sobre seu efeito no desempenho das equipes.<br>Context – The Interest about teams in Software Engineering is increasing and to facilitate the research about it the researchers use an approach input-process-output. However, this approach makes the research about team fragmented, so it is important to have a compilation of these results to have a better understanding of the area, identifying new gaps and solutions. Objective – This systematic review has aimed to provide a better understanding of state of research on software development team. Method – It was used the Software Engineering Evidence Based, to perform a mapping study systematic review about teams in software engineering. It was performed a manual research at previous systematic reviews. In addition, it was performed a more thorough synthesis about team performance. Results – Were found 71 institutions, 117 authors, were only 20 of them conducted more than one study. The SINTEF was the institution that conducted more research, in addition was found 189 relationship, 64 affect response variable “performance”. The main factors that affect the team's performance are: personality, cohesion, communication, autonomy, and member’s skills. Conclusions – The aim of better understanding the state of research about teams in Software Engineering has been achieved in this research. We observed a set of demographic and methodological information will help a better understand the research teams in software engineering. Some factors apparently are more consolidated as the personality they have 12 relationships affect performance. Others must be better evaluated, such as cohesion whose research still presents conflicting results about its effect on the team’s performance.

Covid-19 and restrictions intended to curb the pandemic have affected all areas of human life, but in particular physical activities and exercise habits. Reduction in the time devoted to physical activities have been reported in all demographic groups in various countries, leading to both physical (excessive weight, deterioration of posture, decreased eyesight, increased blood pressure, etc.) and psychological problems (depressive mood). Equestrians were less susceptible to certain restrictions because they could exercise outdoors and individually. Also, horse owners are more likely to regularly spend time with their equine sporting partners. It remains to be determined if and to what extent the pandemic has affected the physical activities of equestrians and whether equestrian physical activities provide a sustainable source of exercise during Covid-19 pandemic. In order to determine this, empirical evidence was collected using a questionnaire that was distributed among the multinational base population of equestrians. The working hypothesis is that patterns of physical activity while working with horses and taking care of the animals had to be adjusted due to restrictions, but overall equestrian activities were sustained and, in some cases, might have even increased. At the same time, the nature of activities is more likely to have been changed: for instance, privileging individual outdoor trainings over group indoor ones and non-competitive recreational riding over competitive activities.

Health is broader than disease and health equity begins outside the health sector. It is critical to understand that health is influenced by social factors such as environment, jobs, education, housing, food, water and sanitation. People with different social positions will have varying access to these resources, creating differences in exposure and vulnerability to health-compromising conditions. To address the root causes of health inequities we need to support interdisciplinary approaches which focus on social determinants of health, alongside attention to health services and interventions. This K4DD Case Study highlights learnings from research conducted across Kenya, Bangladesh, Sierra Leone and India as part of the ARISE consortium, which sought to enhance equity and accountability to improve the health and wellbeing of poor, marginalised people living in informal urban settlements. It focuses on research conducted in slums in Nairobi, Kenya to illustrate the strength in community-led approaches for supporting health equity.

This report synthesizes reflections and recent literature to propose a rethinking of evidence generation in educational technology (EdTech). It advocates for three paradigm shifts to advance the discourse and practice in EdTech impact: 1) Evidence of impact should be understood as multidimensional, encompassing a variety of measures, not only experimental evidence. 2) Evidence collection should support an iterative and ongoing process of evaluating and improving impact over time. 3) Rigorous approaches are essential throughout the entire cycle of evidence to ensure validity and reliability. Recognizing that stakeholders in the EdTech ecosystem have diverse incentives and metrics for success, the report argues that aligning these efforts toward a shared goal of improving educational equity can accelerate the production of sharable knowledge and foster wider, more meaningful impacts.

Political economy analysis (PEA) has emerged as a valuable approach for assessing context and the local systems where international development actors seek to intervene. PEA approaches and tools have grown and adapted over the last 40 years through innovations by donor agencies and practitioners. Our analysis of nine PEAs reveals the following findings: PEAs can make positive contributions to technical interventions; engaging project staff in PEAs increases the likelihood that they will be open to a thinking and working politically mindset and approach; inclusion of gender equity and social inclusion (GESI) in PEAs helps to uncover and address hidden power dynamics; and explicitly connecting PEA findings to project implementation facilitates adaptive management. Implementation lessons learned include careful consideration of logistics, timing, and team members. Our experience and research suggest applied PEAs provide valuable evidence for strengthening evidence-based, adaptive, international development programming. The findings highlight the promise of PEA as well as the need for ongoing learning and research to address continued challenges.
