The Wouri estuary is located in the Gulf of Guinea on the Atlantic coast of Cameroon’s coastline plain (3°49′ and 4°04′ north latitude and 9°20′ to 9°40′ east longitude), and is strongly influenced by coastal dynamics that have remained unquantified over a long period of time. This study analyzed the historical evolution of the Wouri estuarine coastline between 1948 and 2012. Variations in the estuarine evolution of the Wouri were studied from (i) minute topographic extracts from 1948, (ii) 1996–1999 nautical charts, and (iii) 2012 spatial map vectors. The net temporal spatial variation rates were calculated using the statistical methods of the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS). These change rates were also calculated over two time intervals (1948–1996 and 1996–2012) and over a 64-year period (1948–2012). The study reveals highly disparate results. Indeed, kinematics show that the Wouri estuary was dominated by erosion in its downstream section, with 262.83 ha for –3.2 m/year and 110.56 ha for –5.8 m/year between 1948–1996 and 1996–2012 respectively, and by accretion on the other hand in its upstream section, with 239.17 ha for 4.3 m/year in zone 5 between 1948–1996 and 150.82 ha for 12.6 m/year in zone 4 between 1996–2012. Thus, over the 64-year period (1948–2012), we have a dominance of variation by erosion downstream and conversely by accretion upstream, marked by the presence of amplifying factors (anthropogenic pressure and climate change) of the rate of variation of morphological evolution at the beginning of the 21st century, as compared to the middle-20th century. The observed development of sediment loss and accumulation, both influences and will influence, the sediment regime along the Wouri estuarine coastline. There is a need to develop a systematic sub-regional coastal surveillance activity to effectively manage Cameroon’s coastline system.

Callianassa turnerana, called Cameroon ghost shrimps is shrimp with a great sociocultural interest in Cameroon. This study assessed proximate composition and micronutrients contents of Callianassa turnerana from the Wouri estuary in Cameroon. Adult shrimps were collected. The proximate composition, mineral, carotenoids and vitamin E contents were determined in edible parts (male and female) and in eggs of C. turnerana using official analytical methods. One way ANOVA and Fisher’s post hoc PLS test was used to analyze the data. The moisture content were 66±1.5%, 62 ±2.85%, 49.0 ±1.60% in edible parts of male, female and in eggs respectively. Protein contents were high in all the samples ranging from 10.49±0.92% in male edible parts to 30.06±0.89% in eggs. Lipid contents were more than 12% in all samples. Carbohydrate were absent in eggs while the contents were 9.92±0.99% in male and 12.23±0.81% in female edible parts. C. turnerana is a good source of minerals. Sodium (0.983±0.001%- 1.656±0.005%) and Phosphorus (0.974±0.002%-1.321±0.002%) were the main macro elements in all samples. Zn was the major microelement in edible parts with the value ranged from 6.43±0.49mg/100g (male) to 7.62±0.35mg/100g (female) while Cu was the major microelement (10.15±3.57mg/100g) in eggs. High levels of total carotenoids (7.9-15.45µg/g) and vitamin E (12.53-24.03µg/g) were recorded. The main carotenoids were β-caroten (0.637-1.337µg/g) followed by α-caroten (0.216-0.437µg/g). C. turnerana is a good source of many major nutrients and micronutrients and could be used to combat malnutrition and improve health.

The search for and knowledge of the best conditions for anchoring the foundations of certain structures such as bridges, tunnels and quays in sedimentary estuaries is a challenge, for both scientists in general and engineers in particular. Indeed, wharves are structures that receive a lot of stresses and therefore require anchoring to avoid tilting and to guarantee their stability during service. This work, based on the analysis of data from seismic refraction methods, mechanical soundings and laboratory tests, characterises the terrain of the Wouri estuary in Central Africa. The objective is to determine and present the subsurface layers encountered as well as their characteristics, in order to define the best conditions for anchoring the foundations to ensure the stability of the quays to be built there. The seismic refraction campaign shows that the study area is relatively heterogeneous over the first 25 m, with velocities measured in the range 1520–1750 m/s; modulated in two distinct ranges, between 1520–1580 m/s characteristic of mud and loose sediments (alternating layers of clay, sand, loose silt) and the range 1580–1750 m/s corresponding to the signature of sandy-silty or compact clays. The mechanical tests show sedimentary soils, with alternating layers of sandy clay and clayey sand over the 42 m drilled, loose over the first 30 m in the bank area and over the first 15 m in the canal or dredge area, with a limit pressure of less than 1 MPa. Similarly, the soil samples taken and tested in the laboratory show that the soils are clayey over the first 30 metres, plastic and liquid with respect to their water content, respectively, below and above the liquidity limits, confirming their loose character. The results of seismic refraction, mechanical soundings and laboratory tests show that, in estuarine areas characterised by alternating sandy clay and clayey sand, there are not always hard formations in the first 25 metres of depth but, from a depth of 30 m, the soils become moderately compact and begin to form an anchoring layer sufficient to guarantee the stability of the quays against earth pressure forces.

The Wouri estuary, located in the heart of the Gulf of Guinea and open to the Atlantic Ocean, is subject to a wide range of atmospheric, oceanic, continental and anthropic influences at different time scales (short and long term) controlling its evolution. The first part of this thesis, based on archives dating back to the 20th century, allows us to reconstruct the history of the evolution of the Wouri estuary coastline. At the same time, in order to determine the evolution trends of the water levels, to quantify and qualify the kinematics of the coastline and the bottoms in the estuary, an inventory, digitization and analysis of historical documents was carried out. This allowed to record an evolution of the average level at a rate of about 25mm/year in 17 years (2002 - 2019). The results revealed a predominance of variations dominated by erosion downstream and conversely by accretion upstream, over the 64-year period (1948-2012). These trends are accentuated by the presence of amplifying factors (anthropogenic pressure and climate change). In order to study the hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes in the short term, a numerical modeling of the tidal propagation and the distribution of salinities and fine sediments was performed using TELEMAC 3D (calibrated and validated thanks to in-situ measurements acquired during 2019). The tide showed an asymmetry dominated by the ebb in its lower part and inversely by the flood in its upper part. The distribution of salinity allowed to characterize the estuary from well mixed in spring tide, particularly in low water to stratified in neap tide, particularly in flood period. Seasonal variations of the river regime have shown a longitudinal migration of the position of the maximum turbidity zone : upstream during low water and downstream during high water with a massive export of sediments in the intermediate and downstream part of the estuary. In a current context of climate change associated with strong anthropogenic impacts, this study highlights the need to use historical archives, in-situ data coupled with a numerical model to better understand the past and present evolution of hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are compounds that are highly toxic to living organisms, persistent in the environment, undergo long distance transport and accumulate in organic-rich phases (sediments and fatty tissues). Given the vulnerability of aquatic ecosystems to pollution and scarcity of data on POPs in Africa and, this thesis examines the level of Organochlorinated Pesticides (OCPs), Polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) and Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Lake Barombi Watershed (LBW) and Wouri Estuary Mangrove (WEM) in Cameroon. In LBW, OCPs detected were endosulfan, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), dieldrin and aldrin. No OCPs were detected in water and the most frequently detected were HCHs with higher levels in soil than sediments (stream and lake). The α/γ-HCH ratio indicated recent use of lindane. The presence of OCPs is attributed to agriculture and fishing. PAH levels were higher in lake sediments than other samples. Pyrolytic sources of PAHs were predominant specifically combustion of grass, wood or coal. Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs) indicated low ecological risks to aquatic life. In the WEM, PAHs levels in sediments were more abundant than Chlorinated Pesticides (CLPs) and PCBs. The most abundant CLPs were endosulfan, alachlor, heptachlor, lindane (γ-HCH) and DDT for which metabolites pattern revealed recent use. PAHs ratios showed a predominant pyrolytic input. The presence of POPs in the WEM is mainly attributed to disease vector control (malaria), municipal waste dumps, industrial emissions and effluents, open burning of wastes, petroleum exploitation and harbour activities. SQGs implied low to moderate predictive biological toxicity
