La Vendée connaît un essor de l’industrie sardinière dès la fin du XIXe siècle avec l’invention de l’appertisation. L’avènement de la conserve conduit les industriels nantais à ouvrir des conserveries dans les quatre principaux ports vendéens. Ce développement économique s’accompagne de mouvements sociaux où les pêcheurs et les ouvriers des fabriques, refusent dans un premier temps l’industrialisation. Les marins et les conserveurs se retrouvent régulièrement confrontés à deux facteurs limitatifs : les aléas de la présence de la sardine et les conflits qui figent la filière. C’est l’émergence de la concurrence étrangère qui réveille les esprits englués dans des guerres intestines. Mais face à un manque de réactivité et une trop grande confiance en un savoir-faire français que les fabricants font payer cher, les sardines ibériques et marocaines envahissent les marchés. Les conserveries ferment les unes après les autres, les gens de mer se tournent vers d’autres pêcheries. Une seule fabrique de conserves de sardines survit à la crise sardinière en Vendée. Elle se situe à Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie qui devient la capitale vendéenne de la sardine grâce au premier poisson sauvage à décrocher le label rouge en 2000. Issue de techniques de captures traditionnelles, la pêche à la sardine de Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie est inscrite depuis 2018 à l’inventaire du patrimoine culturel immatériel de la France. A travers l’étude historique des choix qui guident les pêcheurs, les mareyeurs, les conserveurs et les ouvriers des usines, nous apportons un éclairage sur les interactions des différents acteurs qui ont fait de la filière sardinière vendéenne ce qu’elle est aujourd’hui
The Vendée experienced a boom in the sardine industry as early as the late 19th century due to the invention of canning. The advent of canning led Nantes industrialists to open canneries in the four main Vendée harbours. Alongside this economic development, social movements appeared, as fishermen and cannery workers, initially opposed industrialization. Fishermen and canners were regularly confronted with two restrictive factors : the contingency of the presence of sardines, as well as the conflicts which froze the sector. The emergence of foreign competition woke up the spirits which were mired in internal conflicts. However, faced with a lack of responsiveness and overconfidence in French expertise which manufacturers charged dearly, Spanish and Moroccan sardines invaded the market. Canneries had to close down one after the other, and seafarers turned to other fisheries.Only one sardine cannery survived the sardine crisis in Vendée. It is located in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, which has become the Vendée capital of sardines thanks to the first wild fish to obtain a red label in 2000. Based on traditional catching techniques, sardine fishing in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie has been listed in the inventory of intangible cultural heritage in France since 2018. Through the historical study of the choices which have guided the fishermen, the fishmongers, the canners and factory workers, we will shed light on the interactions of the various participants who have made the Vendée sardine industry what it is today

As the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) collapsed, two outstanding novels were authored, Supplement to the Journey to the West (Hsi-yu Pu) and Prayer Mat of Flesh (Jou P'u T'uan). Although modern critics have studied these two works, important aspects of each novel have been overlooked. Therefore, this study explores three elements of Jou P'u T'uan: the novel as a picaresque novel, the hero's character consistency, and the book's morality. Also examined are the Ch'an Buddhist aspects present in Hsi-yu Pu. Information on the authors, editions, and controversies of these novels has also been presented. An initial chapter is provided discussing the historical and intellectual background. Finally, a comparative study of the two authors and their works has been undertaken to further understanding of both novels. Thus, it is hoped that this work has made a valuable contribution to the study of these two novels.

The social scientific debate over consumption is of increasing concern to commentators addressing the cultural implications of socio-economic change. All too often, however, the individual meanings that consumers have for the goods they consume have been neglected by these commentators, notably in favour of abstract discussions of the role of consumption in the emergence of a 'postmodern' culture. Arguing that consumption provides the sociologist with an invaluable means of addressing questions concerning the relationship between structure and agency, this thesis attempts to move beyond the limited conception of a fragmented self, picking and choosing his or her identity from the menu of life, to begin to establish an empirical grounding for the relationship between consumption and identity amongst young people. Data were collected from a triangulated three-stage research process, in the form of a series of focus group interviews, informed by Personal Construct Psychology, a participant observation study in a sports shop, and a Consumer Meanings Questionnaire. Arguing that young people's identities are largely constructed in peer group settings, the evidence presented suggests that consumption provides an everyday cultural framework, within which young consumers negotiate some semblance of everyday stability in a 'risk' society. In this sense, young people appear to pursue a dual task. First, they are intent upon forming group-based identities. Second, they attempt to construct a sense of individuality in this context. Hence, it is argued that whilst young people choose consumer goods according to peer group meanings, they tend to see their own choices as 'individual' and those of their peers as being determined by media and marketing-created desires. As such, whilst it would be misleading to see young people as dupes of the capitalist system, neither are they free agents. Teenagers construct their identities partially through the framework that consumption provides, but not with products of their own choosing. Far from being whimsical consumers in this context, I argue that essentially, young people are modernists, adapting to the rational constraints upon their everyday lives and changing the character of their consumption patterns accordingly. The situated realities of so-called postmodern forms of consumption can therefore only be understood, it is argued, through innovative triangulated research methods which address consumer meanings in routine everyday settings and which, in turn, consider the theoretical implications of such meanings, for both an understanding of the ideological impact of consumerism and it's relationship to debates concerning structure and agency.

Le Canada anglais compte plusieurs excellents romanciers et dramaturges dont un petit nombre seulement jouissent d'une renommée internationale. Parmi ces derniers, il faut sûrement ranger Timothy Findley, prolifique auteur de sept romans, de trois pièces de théâtre, de deux recueils de nouvelles et d'une autobiographie qui a suscité beaucoup d'intérêt lorsqu'elle a paru récemment (1991). Nous nous proposons ici de faire quelques brèves remarques concernant la pièce de théâtre, que nous avons traduite, Can You See Me Yet?, portée à la scène en 1976. Ceux qui ne connaitraient pas Findley à travers ses oeuvres, ont peut-être pu découvrir ce personnage tout à fait fascinant lors de la télédiffusion par le CBC du documentaire : Timothy Findley: Anatomy of a Writer, présenté en première le 19 décembre 1991, par Adrienne Clarkson. Although a considerable amount of research into beer consumer behavior has been conducted in several countries, no publicly available such study performed in Portugal has been found. The aim of this research is to understand young consumers' perceptions regarding six brands available in Portuguese retailers and to compare the results with other studies. In this research the author developed a conceptual framework and defined hypotheses, permitting an answer to the purpose of this investigation. Different techniques for collecting data such as surveys and experimentations were used and analysed statistically. The findings suggest that the presence of the brand and packaging are determinant in the formation of consumers' sensorial expectations and play a central role in consumers' evaluation, even if those attributes are not recognized as more important in consumers'perspectives. The majority of participants were unable to Recognize their favourite brand in the blind-test evaluation, and the two brands that were rated in last positions in the survey climbed to the top when they were not identifiable, even if in consumers'perspectives the taste is the most important attribute when choosing a beer. The main beneficiaries of the research should be breweries and, more precisely, marketing and brand managers because it provides important insights into the attributes young consumers value most and suggests strategies for marketing and advertising campaigns. The research can also provide an academic contribution because it specifies the processes to conduct blind test experimentations and suggests further studies based on the investigation results. It also, once again, makes obvious the importance of brand awareness.

Dans un environnement largement marque par une interdependance croissante des economies ainsi que par une globalisation des relations economiques et monetaires internationales, la possibilite de voir dans le yen un candidat potentiel au role de monnaie internationale n'est pas a ecarter. Par l'internationalisation de ses institutions financieres, le japon aujourd'hui premier creancier mondial, a su associer a sa puissance economique une formidable puissance financiere et ce grace a l'assouplissement de la position des autorites monetaires. Mais paradoxalement, l'usage international du yen reste faible et le japon ne peut etre qualifie de banquier du monde compte tenu de la specificite et de la fragilite de son intermediation financiere internationale. Toutefois, des lors que l'on adopte une approche permettant dedefendre l'edification d'un systeme tripolaire, le yen trouve sa place au sein du smi au cote du dollar et de la monnaie europeenne. The present configuration of worldwide economy raise many questions. Would regionalism not lead to question an organization of the world based on an hegemonic power ? throughout the 1980s, japan has risen a great prominence in economic and financial world whereas united-states lost power. So, the yen appears as a potential candidate to the role of international money. The basic purpose of this study was to discover through the use of a projective technique whether the brand purchased by a consumer affects others' perceptions of her image. Several theoretical concepts formed the basis for this study. An understanding of the theory behind symbols was needed in order to understand the way in which products and brands can become symbols for consumers. Product and self-image theories help to explain the relationship between the two images and how congruency between the two can affect consumers' perceptions. The concept of culture was introduced as an added variable in order to discern if culture has an effect upon self-image and/or the perception of product/brand images.

Thou, Thee, Thy, Thine, Ye, You, Your, Yours: Second Person Pronouns in Two Bible Translations

In the King James Version from 1611 there are eight different forms of personal pronouns for second person: the singular forms thou, thee, thy, thine and the corresponding plural forms ye, you, your and yours. Because of linguistic changes in the English language the number of the second person pronouns has declined during the centuries. Accordingly, in the New King James Version from 1990 these eight earlier pronouns are represented by only three pronouns: you, your, yours. Therefore, the hypothesis of this study was that the disappearance of so many different pronoun forms might have caused some ambiguity. To examine this, The Gospel of Luke of both Bible versions was studied and all the second person pronouns were first classified according to their case and number (nominative/accusative/dative/genitive, singular/plural) and thereafter counted. The verses of the Gospel of Luke, where both one or several persons are addressed, were read and carefully studied. Furthermore, when necessary, interesting or relevant, comparisons were also made to two other translations: Gustav V´s Bible from 1917 and the Swedish Bible Version from 2000. The results of this study show that there are differences in the numbers of the examined pronouns. These discrepancies depend on several different factors which have been discussed. In addition, the investigation gives evidence of the fact that the references of pronouns are not always completely clear: several verses, which might be perceived erroneously, were found in the modern English Bible translation.

In the growing multiculturalism of Swedish society, we see a significant amount of citizens of various heritages experience difficulty when venturing into the Swedish labor market. These difficulties have been explained earlier by either cultural or structural factors. The cultural factors state that individuals raised outside of the traditional ―Swedish‖ culture have greater difficulty in understanding the subtle idiomatic properties of the Swedish labor market. On the other hand, the structural factors state that it is the deficiency in Swedish language and education that stand as the main obstacles in finding lucrative professions on the labor market. To determine the structural and/or cultural factors, I have performed field research in restaurants of the Norrköping district. The restaurant is a setting in which several aspects are shown to have influence over the informants‘ decision to become a restaurant owner. These aspects include the labor market, food, family relations, and networks between friends and professional associates. Why have these individuals chosen restaurants? Is it out of economic necessity, or is it a family profession they feel compelled to safeguard? In this thesis, several restaurant owners will answer questions regarding their choice of profession, their prospects on the labor market, the influence of their families, the importance of cuisine as a cultural foundation, and the discrepancies behind social and financial networks among ethnic groups in Sweden.

Cantonese is not only a lingua franca in Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macau but also a dialect that is widely used by overseas Chinese communities around the world. Being the most prestigious Yue dialect, Cantonese is definitely an important dialect that is worth investigating. In the past few decades, over a dozen dictionaries on Cantonese have been compiled. Among them, the Guangzhouhua zhengyin zidian 《廣州話正音字典》and Yueyin zhengdu zihui 《粵音正讀字彙》are both widely used and thus influential standards on Cantonese. Despite their importance, systematic studies on the Cantonese pronunciations given in the two dictionaries are few and far between. The present thesis is the first attempt to study the subject. The present dissertation attempts to analyze the differences between the two dictionaries so that a comprehensive list of their differences can be obtained. The analysis is conducted with reference to the number of pronunciations given to each character; the order of listing the pronunciations; tone change; and the listing of commonly used pronunciations. The present thesis also tries to examine the differences between the two editions of Guangzhouhua zhengyin zidian and among the three editions of Yueyin zhengdu zihui. Possible reasons for such differences would also be investigated. It is not surprising to find that many Chinese characters are given different pronunciations in the two dictionaries as the two dictionaries use two different approaches to determine the correct Cantonese pronunciations. The pronunciations recorded in the Guangzhouhua zhengyin zidian are the Cantonese pronunciations commonly used in Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macau, whilst those recorded in the Yueyin zhengdu zihui are mainly based on the fanqie（反切） recorded in the Guangyun《廣韻》and the Jiyun《集韻》, which were both published in Song Dynasty. Significant differences regarding the criteria of determining the correct Cantonese pronunciations are found in the 3 editions of the Yueyin zhengdu zihui. It is surprising that a tendency of giving more emphasis to the pronunciations commonly used is found in the 2nd and 3rd editions.

The following thesis will address both the work I completed during my Graduate studies at the University of New Orleans (1992-96), as well as the collaborative work I executed in the years that followed. The range of materials used, individual subject matter, and the variations in presentation vary widely, but the development of concept and methodology will be illuminated by the analysis of these works under the central theme of collaboration. The works selected for presentation were chosen in order to exemplify both the thematic similarities and the conceptual dynamics of a body of work inspired by intellectual investigation and intuitive navigation on the landscape of creative possibilities.

Nothing in the modern consumer society is consumed with more relish as criticism of consumption. Merely to consume appears to be morally reprehensible ? one should produce, make, be creative. What You Want Whenever You Want It is a project that reflects on contemporary culture, including movements of taste, tempo and style. It embraces the rich and varied iconography of popular culture ? films, advertising, images, packaging, fashion and music. By seeking, absorbing and emulating the content of these cultural iconography and collaging them together, i have developed my own idiosyncratic view on consumerism, specifically in relation to Western popular culture. According to Boris Groys, the act of shopping may often be misconstrued as a frivolous or meaningless activity. Wandering idly, touching, selecting and consuming are generally viewed as the primary urban leisure occupation of affluent Western society. Purchasing goods is an activity that does more than just satisfies one's general needs or desires. Rather, shopping is a communal and public ritual through which identity is created and altered (Hollein, M. 2002: 14). What You Want Whenever You Want It Whenever you want it is a mixed media body of artworks. The primary material is 'fuzzy' felt fabric. The felt used throughout my body of work is prepared using artificial fibres. Synthetic felt is available in a reasonably wide variety of loud and vibrant colours. The highly absorbent and dense texture of felt permits intense colour that is both bold and eye-catching. I have used the plasticity of the synthetic felt to create conceptual ties to the superficial and theatrical nature of Western contemporary culture, because this synthetic material allows me to emulate the striking and mesmerizing nature of my content. Each work in What You Want Whenever You Want It uses modes of art-making that involve collage and appropriation. The project customizes and recombines various existing elements of the commercial world. These modes of art making have enabled me to explore materiality through the juxtaposition of existing media. Collage as a fine arts medium has been significant in reflecting the social, political and cultural climate of the world throughout various movements in modern art (Waldman, D. 1992: 8). This body of work engages with collage as a medium as it allows me to re-contextualize existing fragments of media and make it into a new product on its own. In the recombination of these fragments, I aim to communicate new viewpoints on consumerism and Western popular culture. This thesis paper works to explicate my process and my artwork. It proceeds in sections titled 'The Materiality of Felt', 'Felt Suit (After Beuys)', 'On Form, (Robert Morris)', 'Experience (Mike Kelley)', 'The Impact of Collage' and notes on individual artworks. Firstly, The Materiality of Felt explains and explores the materiality of felt, focusing on its relevance to my artwork. Secondly, I discuss the artists that influence my work. Thirdly, I explore the history, impact and meaning of collage in terms of my art-making process. The fourth section focuses on individual artworks and content. Both the work and production process is described.

Idag finns det begränsade teorier som behandlar det postmoderna konsumtionssamhället utifrån ett medie- och kommunikationsvetenskaligt perspektiv. Syftet med examensarbetet är att undersöka spänningsfältet mellan ICA och högskolestudenter i ett konsumtionssamhälle genom att granska varumärkeskommunikationens betydelse på digitala plattformar. Materialinsamlingen är genomförd i form av kvalitativa intervjuer, med medarbetare på ICA, samt fokusgrupper med studenter. Med studien vill vi ge en inblick i hur kommunikationsprocesser strategiskt utformas för att nå rätt målgrupp, hur relationer vårdas och vad en god dialog innebär och har för framtida betydelser. Studien har analyserat det spänningsfält som ligger i grund till valet av konsumtion gällande matvaruhandel som högskolestudent. Studiens slutsatser visar på att det är en rad olika faktorer som är bidragande till att bygga upp en stark relation med ett företag.
Today there is limited theories considering reasearch on the postmodern consumtion society from a media and communication perspective. The purpose with this thesis is to investigate the tension between ICA and Univeristy students in a consumption society through analysis brandbuilding communications meaning on digital platforms. The material to the thesis is collected by qualitative interviews, both with employees at ICA and focus groups with university students. With this thesis we want to give an insight of how communication processes strategically is designed to reach their target group, how relationships are nurtured and what a good dialogue means for future brand building. The study has analyzed the tension of what includes the choice of consumption when it comes to retail business from university students perspective. The conclusions indicate how there are a number of factors that are contributing to build a strong relationship with an organization.

Анотація:

This thesis centers on modified stencils for the Finite-Difference Time-Domain method (FDTD), or Yee scheme, when modelling curved boundaries, obstacles and holes smaller than the discretization length. The goal is to increase the accuracy while keeping the structure of the standard method, enabling improvements to existing implementations with minimal effort. We present an extension of a previously developed technique for consistent boundary approximation in the Yee scheme. We consider both Maxwell's equations and the acoustic equations in three dimensions, which require separate treatment, unlike in two dimensions. The stability properties of coefficient modifications are essential for practical usability. We present an analysis of the requirements for time-stable modifications, which we use to construct a simple and effective method for boundary approximations. The method starts from a predetermined staircase discretization of the boundary, requiring no further data on the underlying geometry that is being approximated. Not only is the standard staircasing of curved boundaries a poor approximation, it is inconsistent, giving rise to errors that do not disappear in the limit of small grid lengths. We analyze the standard staircase approximation by deriving exact solutions of the difference equations, including the staircase boundary. This facilitates a detailed error analysis, showing how staircasing affects amplitude, phase, frequency and attenuation of waves. To model obstacles and holes of smaller size than the grid length, we develop a numerical subgrid method based on locally modified stencils, where a highly resolved micro problem is used to generate effective coefficients for the Yee scheme at the macro scale. The implementations and analysis of the developed methods are validated through systematic numerical tests.

The thesis includes both parts which are solo recital and performance recital. Both of the recitals contain the program and program notes. There are four pieces in the solo recital, each being the work of different period. The first piece being the Toccata in E minor, BWV.914 by J. S. Bach is one of the important keyboard works in the early stages which utilize the alternation between free and contrapuntal styles of the Baroque piano music. The second piece being the Piano Sonata, Op.22 by R.Schumann is a musical composition which is based on a short motive and is a rather well-known composition. The third piece being the Suite, Op.14 by B. Bartók is a the work in the style of strong folk music. The fourth piece being Les Soirées de Nazelles by F. Poulenc is a highly varied genre which is not only an improvised work at a party between Poulenc and his friends but also the most important composition amongst his piano music. The performance recital comprises of four musical compositions. The first piece being Cello Sonata No.5 in D Major, Op.102 no.2 by L.V. Beethoven is full of the maturity and rich polyphony technique and is the one that was never witnessed before. The second piece being the Hungarian Rhapsody No.10 by F. Liszt contains an interesting free spirit as well as causalness. The third piece being Excursions Op.20 by S. Barber has a highly varied style and also contains strong significance of spontaneity. The fourth piece being Hungarian Dances for piano four hands, No.1、3、5、6、21 by J. Brahms is a work which strongly demonstrates the style of Gypsy music.
