Full textThe main subject of the present study is the modelling and the numerical simulation of unsteady and transient flow phenomena in natural gas transmission pipelines and distribution networks. Natural gas is a modern fuel which has serious energy applications covering in big percentage the energy balance of many countries. It is a gas and natural fuel for the transport of which from his points of pumping, has been created a complicated international network. This network is connected with the national local networks that distribute it to local consumers. These complicated networks even if they are designed for operation in steady flow conditions actually work under unsteady conditions. The changes and the peaks of the demand at the duration of a day, the start or the sudden stop of compressors or regulation stations, the failure of network appliances are few of the factors which cause important changes in the flow behaviour of these systems. The simulation and the precise forecast of these extreme flow situations are very important for safe, reliable and economic operation of these networks. For the analysis of these phenomena the present work was structured in eight chapters. In chapter 1 become the definition of problem and the description of flow conditions that rule the natural gas networks. In chapter 2 becomes extensive investigation in the previous research effort on this subject. In chapter 3, the mathematic model which simulates with success such flow situations is defined. Further more in chapters 4 and 5 numerical methods suitable for the numerical solution of this model were developed. These methods are suitable for the initial design of pipelines (chapter 4) as much for more precise calculations (chapter 5). In chapter 6 an improved algorithm for the simulation if complicated networks with many pipes and nodes is presented. The numerical solution of the transient network conditions based on the methodology that developed in previous chapters. In chapter 7 experimental investigations of transient flow phenomena in pipe networks was carried out in laboratory installations. In chapter 8 an extensive review of the basic conclusions was presented, combined with proposals for further research.

Full textThis master thesis is dealing with the mass transport problem of a conservative neutral pollutant inside an open channel flow. The open channel is flat bottommed with a mild slope. The pollutant outflows either continuously or instantaneously out of a linear source, with specified length, which every time is positioned on different depths. The mass transport problem was solved both numerically, by ANSYS FLUENT v.13 programme, and analytically in order to get those two types of solytions compared.

Full textOver the last few decades, a huge growth on energy demands for all consuming categories is observed in a global scale. The giant growth of overall global industry, the development of former developing countries such as China, and India, etc at a rapid pace, the increase of the planet’s total population and its overall living standard has led to an exponential growth of the planet’s energy needs. To satisfy those energy needs, huge projects have been realised worldwide, in order to maximise the effisient use of fuel and other natural energy resources, as well as their fast and secure transport from their mining and refinery points to the big consumption centres. Within this framework, the gas/petroleum pipeline industry has flourished for the past twenty years. At the same time, the electrical power industry has known similar, if not greater, growth. For a variety of reasons, the development of those two industries is significantly connected and they are following, systematically common energy routes. As a result, the selection of comon right-of-ways for the infrastructure of both the gas/oil pipeline and power industry is a common practise-if not the rule. Therefore, the situations of parallelism, oblique approach and crossing between High Voltage (or even Ultra High Voltage) transmission lines and gas/petroleum pipelines –either above or underground– have quite frequently happened. In those cases, the electromagnetic influence on the oil/gas pipeline near the transmission line becomes increasingly significant. The purpose of this diploma thesis is the study of the above stated effect of a High Voltage transmission line on a nearby above ground gas/oil pipeline, under lightning conditions affecting the transmission line itself. Initially, during the first six chapters a theoretical approach was attempted and information was displayed concerning each basic part, that the total –under study– layout consists of. In the first chapter, general information for the various categories of overvoltages were given. In the second chapter, the basic characteristics of lightning were presented, its behaviour as a natural phenomenon was approched and its disastrous effects were established. During the third chapter, a theoretical approach of transmission lines was attempted and basic elements of transmission line modeling theory were given. In chapter four, basic theoretical data concerning the modeling of transmission line towers were presented and the effect of lightning on them was examined. In the fifth chapter, general information about the history, use, construction and control of pipelines were presented. The vital role this infrastructure plays in the global gas/oil and power industry was ascertained. During the sixth chapter, basic structures and key sub-programs of the ATP-EMTP (ElectoMagnetic Transient Program) were presented, along with the capabilities of this powerful software tool, that was used to perform the simulations required for this diploma thesis. Chapter seven that followed next, represents the very core of this thesis. In that chapter, a detailed description of the models used to simulate the transmission line-oil/gas pipeline layout, was presented and specific information concerning the calculations of model parameters and their implementation in ATP-Draw of EMTP was given. More specificly, the seventh chapter of the thesis contains the following: First of all, the characteristics of the Heidler generator -used to simulate the lightning strike- were given, along with all the respective parameters for its implementation in the EMTP. After that, a detailed presentation of the double-circuit 400kV transmission power line of the Greek Power Network was made. All its parameters were calculated, including average heights and matching impdendances, and their implementation in the EMTP was specified. Next, the line’s tower model that was used in the simulation was analysed and its specific critiria that needed to be met were indicated. Different possible approaches for the modeling of the tower’s footing groung were also examined, resulting in the selection of the resistive grounding electrode as the most general case. For both the tower model and the footing resistance, the implementation in the EMTP was made clear. Afterwards, the simulation model of the aboveground gas/oil pipeline was presented, its parameters were calculated and their implementation in the EMTP was depicted. Right after that, the most significant and at the same time difficult part of this study was examined: the verification of the coupling between the 400kV transmission line and the nearby gas/oil pipeline. In this part of the study, the existance of the following three coupling types was identified: capacitive, inductive and resistive coupling. For all three types of coupling between the transmission line and the pipeline, an in-depth calculative analysis was carried out, followed by representation of the produced results and their implementation in the program. Furthermore, general numerical data concerning the simulation was presented at this point, along with the researcher’s selected approximations for modeling the transmission line-gas/oil pipeline layout. Closing this chapter, the implementation in the EMTP of all three types of coupling was illustrated, both in overall and one-by-one. This overall illustration of the layout’s coupling, revealed the basic structure block of the simulation. This diploma thesis is completed in the eighth and final chapter. In that part of the study, the final simulation results are presented, concerning the induced voltage on the gas/oil pipeline from the nearby transmission power line that suffers a lightning strike. This presentation includes all numerical data and respective graphs (graphic displays) of the induced voltages on the pipeline itself, as well as the towers and the 6 phases of the transmission line. Winding up the last chapter, a series of observations on the results is made, and an attempt to reach some conclusions based on the specific study is carried out. More specifically, it was established that situations of parallelism, oblique approach and crossing between High Voltage (or even Ultra High Voltage) transmission lines and gas/petroleum pipelines –either above or underground– can create a system prone to intense coupling under certain circumstances. Strong currents and voltages circulating on the transmission line, especially during faulty and lightning conditions, result in the electromagnetic and electrostatic coupling between the line and the nearby gas/oil pipeline. Direct result of this coupling is the induced voltage upon the gas/oil pipeline, which can -under proper conditions- become a hazard for both the human factor and the safety of the pipeline itself.

Full textThe object of this diploma thesis is the designing and the construction of an electric drive system for an electric boat. A number of technical interventions were made to transform a simple boat to an electrically driven boat. In our days the electric boats and the electric propulsion in general constitute a part of the electric transportation. The electric transportation may be a possible solution in the continuously increasing demand in the sector of transports as well as in energy and environmental problems that this causes. The high efficient electric machines and power electronic converters, the high control level of power electronics that offers manoeuvrability in a ship, the lack of noise - disturbance and the absence of pollution lead us to use electric boats and electric propulsion more and more in our days. In our application for practical and safety reasons we were led to the choice of a low voltage permanent magnet direct current (DC) motor. This is resulting to a high value of current to get the nominal power of 1.5 kW. For this reason an interleaved four – channel dc/dc converter was designed and constructed which has the ability to control high currents and is ideal for such type applications. The particular converter is constituted by 4 parallel channels, it is working in the continuous conduction mode (CCM) and it degrades the voltage of 36V to 0-24V for the control of the rpm of the dc propulsion motor which its full load current is 78A. Firstly a number of simulations made via PSpice program and also a number of experiments to see how the converter is working. The experiments shows that the efficiency of the interleaved converter of the application is about 95%, so it is a good solution for driving low voltage – high current dc motors. Such types of electric motors are used in many electric transportation applications. The launching of the boat and a number of sea tests shows us the advantages electric propulsion has.

Full textThe purpose of this paper is , at first, to create a model with the features of a high voltage insulator. This model will be incorporated into the model of a high-voltage line double circuit 400kV, to calculate the induced transients in adjacent aboveground pipeline hydrocarbons. These goals are achieved by modeling real pillars and lines of Greek transport system and overground pipeline hydrocarbons. The simulation is implemented through the ATP-EMTP. The model Volt-Time Curve is used for the modeling of the insulator. Also, two types of lightning are used for the simulations, for fast and slow signal, with current values 100kA. For fast signal, the prices of front and tail time are 1.2 / 50ms and for slow signal 10 / 350ms. In this thesis there are 8 chapters. In the first five chapters was a quote and information theoretical approach to all individual parts that make up the overall layout of the study. The 5 chapter is a detailed reference to the ATP-EMTP program which performed the simulation. The 6 chapter is the modeling of all elements of the layout and the incorporation into the ATP-EMTP. In chapter 7 we present the model of the insulator developed and in chapter 8 we present the simulation results and draw inferences about the layout.
