Abstract:
Water-soluble inositol metabolites were separated by anion-exchange chromatogrphy in order to determine whether or not γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH, lindane) and related compounds affect phosphatidylinositol hydrolysis in rat brain cortex slices. Hydrolysis was increased by δ-and γ-HCH, while α- and β-HCH were inactive. Muscarinic receptor stimulation of rat cortical slices with carbachol increases inositol phosphates formation. The combined effect of carbachol and the hexachlorocyclohexane isomers together were approximately equal to the sum of the effect of each one separately. The results

ABSTRACT This study investigated the feasibility of a slow-release inoculation approach as a bioaugmentation strategy for the degradation of lindane (γ-hexachlorocyclohexane [γ-HCH]). Slow-release inoculation of Sphingomonas sp. γ 1-7 was established in both liquid and soil slurry microcosms using open-ended silicone tubes in which the bacteria are encapsulated in a protective nutrient-rich matrix. The capacity of the encapsulated cells to degrade lindane under aerobic conditions was evaluated in comparison with inoculation of free-living cells. Encapsulation of cells in tubes caused the remov

Lindane (γ-hexachlorocyclohexane) was used as the substrate for a degradation experiment with the white rot fungiPhlebia brevisporaTMIC34596 andPhlebia lindtneriGB1027, which are capable of degrading DDT. Pure culture of both fungi showed that about 40% of lindane was degraded after 7 days of incubation, while over 70% of lindane was degraded after 28 days of incubation. Eight metabolic products such as pentachlorocyclohexanol, dihydroxytetrachlorocyclohexane and trihydroxytrichlorocyclohexane were detected from both fungal cultures using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In this study, experimentally lindane-induced histopathological changes and proliferation and/or apoptosis in germ cells in the rat testes were investigated. A total of 40 healthy fertile 3-month-old male rats were used. Animals were divided into 4 groups, each containing 10 rats. Group 1 (control) was given only pure olive oil, Groups 2, 3 and 4 were administered lindane at 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg/bw, respectively, by gastric gavage for 30 days. Microscopically, degenerative changes were observed in the lindane-treated groups. For proliferative activity PCNA immunolabelling and for germ cells apo

The effects of the insecticide lindane (the γ-isomer of 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane) on membrane potential, cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and surface biophysical properties were studied in human spermatozoa. The insecticide induces rapid, transient and reproducible membrane depolarization and opening of voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels leading to an increase in [Ca2+]i. In contrast with the effect in somatic cells, lindane did not affect γ-aminobutyric acid receptor-linked Cl- currents. Ca2+ and K+ currents were found to drive lindane-induced membrane depolarization and repo
