AbstractIdiomorphous crystals of five different polymorphic modifications (α-ε) of TeI4 are simultaneously grown from solutions of TeI4 and concentrated HI in methanol by evaporating the solvent at room temperature. δ-TeI4 is the only stable phase at normal conditions. Phase transformations of α-, β-, γ-and ε-TeI4 to the final stage δ-TeI4 take place by heating and run through discrete intermediates. The observed graduations lead to a sequence γ-, β-, α-,ε-TeI4 which indicates “increasing metastability”. The crystal structures of α-TeI4 (trigonal; P3̄ml; a = 4.228(2), c - 6.684(6)Å, Z = 0.5; D

Particles of the ordered cubic γ -Fe2O3 appear single crystalline in bright field and in dark field images with reflections of the basic spinel structure. White noise theory allows to formulate quantum white noises explicitly as elemental quantum stochastic processes. A traditional quantum stochastic differential equation of Itô type is brought into a normal-ordered white noise differential equation driven by lower powers of quantum white noises. The class of normal-ordered white noise differential equations covers quantum stochastic differential equations with highly singular noises such as higher powers or higher order derivatives of quantum white noises, which are far beyond the traditional Itô theory. An efficient algorithm for hydrodynamical interaction of many deformable drops subject to shear flow at small Reynolds numbers with triply periodic boundaries is developed. The algorithm, at each time step, is a hybrid of boundary-integral and economical multipole techniques, and scales practically linearly with the number of drops N in the range N < 1000, for NΔ ∼ 103 boundary elements per drop. A new near-singularity subtraction in the double layer overcomes the divergence of velocity iterations at high drop volume fractions c and substantial viscosity ratio γ. Extensive long-time simulat

Phase-separated semiconductors containing magnetic nanostructures are relevant systems for the realization of high-density recording media. Here, the controlled strain engineering of GaδFeN layers with FeyN embedded nanocrystals (NCs) via AlxGa1−xN buffers with different Al concentration 0<xAl<41% is presented. Through the addition of Al to the buffer, the formation of predominantly prolate-shaped ε-Fe3N NCs takes place. Already at an Al concentration xAl≈ 5% the structural properties—phase, shape, orientation—as well as the spatial distribution of the embedded NCs are modified in compar

Recent progresses in signal transduction have revealed that β-catenin signaling controls embryonic development, tumorigenesis, cell shape, and polarity. The role of this pathway in myocyte shape regulation during cardiac hypertrophy and failure is, however, not clearly defined. Since homozygous knockout of β-catenin is embryonically lethal, we have deleted β-catenin genes specifically in the heart of adult mice by crossing loxP-flanked β-catenin mice with transgenic mice expressing tamoxifen-activated MerCreMer protein (MCM) driven by the α-myosin heavy chain promoter. Berry-Esseen-type bounds to the normal, based on zero- and size-bias couplings, are derived using Stein's method. The zero biasing bounds are illustrated in an application to combinatorial central limit theorems in which the random permutation has either the uniform distribution or one that is constant over permutations with the same cycle type, with no fixed points. The size biasing bounds are applied to the occurrences of fixed, relatively ordered subsequences (such as rising sequences) in a random permutation, and to the occurrences of patterns, extreme values, and subgraphs in finite graph
