This paper sets out the author’s ideas of how peer observation can be a useful tool for teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL), especially when teaching as part of a large faculty. He will demonstrate how observing other teachers’ classes can stimulate and improve the professional development of the observing instructors. He will argue that the simple act of observing other methods of teaching need not be in any way a challenge to the teachers’ positions but rather, a helpful and encouraging element in the career of the instructor. 本論では、教師同士の授業を観察することが、特に大きな学部の中でESLを教える教師にとって役立つ手段となることを述べる。他の教師の授業を観察することで、観察している教師の専門的な成長が見られる。授業を観察することがその教師の負担になることはなく、むしろ教育者としてのキャリアにとって強みになることを論じる。

Notetaking is an important skill in academic listening. In second language (L2) contexts, research on this topic remains relatively limited, but is gradually increasing. However, there are still a number of gaps to be filled, one of which is collaboration. Notetaking is generally seen as a solitary activity, but having students collaborate with classmates and share their notes with one another may be beneficial. The purpose of this paper is to investigate this possibility. Learners in an intact academic listening class shared notes with each other six times over the course of one semester and answered questions about the experience. Most participants responded that they were open to sharing notes with classmates and that they found the activity useful, suggesting that it may be beneficial for the development of notetaking skills. ノートテイキング（講義を要約しノートに書き取ること）はアカデミック・リスニングにおいて重要な学習技術である。第2言語（L2）において講義ノートをとることに関する研究は比較的少ないが、ここ数年少しずつ増えてきている。しかし、まだ取り上げられていない研究テーマがいくつかあり、その中の一つは協働学習である。講義ノートをとる事は一人で行う作業と思われがちだが、学生が自分で取った講義内容を同級生と共有することは効果的であると考えられる。本論の目的はこの可能性を探ることである。アカデミック・リスニングの授業を受講している学習者たちは1学期中６回同級生と講義内容を互いに共有し、その経験についてアンケートに答えた。その結果、学習者はノートを共有することに対しておおむね肯定的で、また効果的であると答えた。これは、同級生とノートを共有することがノートテイキング・スキルの発達につながることを示唆している。

The difference and similarity between artistic and natural beauty has been a much-debated topic amongst aestheticians. Allen Carlson – a leading scholar in environmental aesthetics since the late 1970s – claims that we should not appreciate natural beauty in terms of artistic beauty. For Carlson, appreciating “nature as nature” is fundamental. In my eyes, it is hard to deny that nature should be appreciated as nature. However, it is also true that influences from our aesthetic appreciation of artworks should be taken into account when it comes to appreciating the natural environment. To support this argument, I will show that the expression “as beautiful as an artwork!” does not run against the fundamental of “nature as nature” when applied to natural beauty. 芸術美と自然美の差異は、美学者のあいだでも多く議論される話題のひとつである。1970年代より環境美学を牽引してきたアレン・カールソンは、自然美を芸術美の規範で以て鑑賞するべきではないと主張する。かれにとって、「自然を自然として」鑑賞することが根本的に重要なことがらである。 本稿もまた、自然を自然として鑑賞するという要請そのものを否定することはしない。しかし、自然環境の鑑賞について考える際、芸術作品の美的鑑賞からの影響もまた数え入れられるべきだということもひとつの事実である。このことを示すために、本稿では「芸術作品のように美しい！」という表現は、「自然を自然として」という基礎的な要請に反するものではないことを明らかにする。 This article is in Japanese.

Penelitian ini menganalisis honne dan tatemae dari representasi budaya honne dan tatemae pada interaksi tokoh Sakura dengan tokoh lain dalam manga "Naruto" serta faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi penggunaan honne dan tatemae oleh tokoh Sakura. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori representasi dan teori pragmatik. Metode pengumpulan data dengan metode pustaka dan instrumen berupa kartu data. Data yang dikumpulkan kemudian dikelompokkan sesuai rumusan masalah lalu dianalisis menggunakan metode analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil yang ditemukan yaitu representasi honne dan tatemae terlihat pada interaksi tokoh Sakura dengan tokoh lain dalam manga "Naruto". Ketika berinteraksi dengan orang yang memiliki hubungan dekat, pada situasi informal dan saat tujuan tuturnya tidak dapat tersampaikan dengan baik bila menggunakan tatemae, Sakura menggunakan honne. Tetapi pada situasi tutur tertentu Sakura tidak mengungkapkan seluruh pemikirannya di depan publik karena dikhawatirkan akan merusak keharmonisan hubungan apabila hal tersebut diungkapkan seluruhnya. Sedangkan ketika berbicara dengan orang yang lebih tua, orang yang baru dikenal, orang asing, orang yang memiliki jabatan dan status sosial yang lebih tinggi, Sakura menggunakan tatemae. Tatemae juga digunakan oleh Sakura pada situasi formal dan bila honne tidak sesuai dengan norma yang berlaku atau memiliki potensi merusak keharmonisan hubungan dan menyakiti lawan tutur. Faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi penggunaan honne dan tatemae oleh tokoh Sakura yaitu situasi tutur, hubungan dengan lawan tutur dan tujuan tuturan.Kata Kunci : representasi, honne, tatemae 本研究は、サクラのキャラクターが「ナルト」漫画の他のキャラクターとやりとりしているときに、本音と建前の文化を表現することによって、本音と建前の分析を論じて、サクラのキャラクターによる本音と建前の使用に影響を及ぼす要因について明らかにする。本研究は表現理論と実用理論を用いている。使用されるデータは文学的方法であり、データカードの形で器具を使用する。収集したデータは問題の定式化に従ってグループ化され、記述的定性分析法を使用して分析される。その研究の結果、「ナルト」漫画ではサクラと他のキャラクターとの相互作用に本音と建前の表現が見られる。サクラは次のことをするときに本音を使う。彼女と密接な関係を持っている人とのやりとり、非公式な状況でのとき、建前の使用時に会話の目的を正しく伝えることができないとき。しかし、特定の状況では、サクラは彼女の考えをすべて公開していない。それが恐れるので、それが完全に開示されていれば、調和関係に損害を与える。サクラは次のことをするときに建前を使う。高齢者と、より高い地位と社会的地位を持つ人、新しい人と見知らぬ人と話すこと、本音が一般的な規範に従っていない場合、または関係の調和に害を及ぼし特定の関係者に害を及ぼす可能性がある場合、正式な状態である。本音と建前の使用に影響を与える要因は状況、他の人との関係、そして目的。keyword : 表示, 本音, 建前

<p align="left">本事例研究は，パーソナリティ障害，統合失調性情動障害，非定型の精神病等の診断がつけられるほど重症であったクライエントが，描画を媒介としたセラピストとのやり取りの中で劇的に軽快したプロセスを詳細に検討したものである。私は心療内科医としてこの事例の重篤さに驚くとともに，行動療法家として日頃行っている査定や介入との異同を念頭に読み進めていった。事例報告の方法としては，「臨床家による語りの形式」をとっており，標準化された量的質問紙も効果判定に使われなかったとされているが，実は行動療法における単一事例実験計画と原理的な面で相違点よりも類似点の方が多いと思われる。本事例の介入は，描画とそれを媒介として成立したコミュニケーションによって行われたが，その中核は「描画による感情表現と正しい言葉による対応」と理解できる。介入が進むにつれて，描画とそれを描いたクライエントの中に「意識的努力をしないのに」非連続的な変化が生じたことが明らかになったが，それがどのような機序によってもたらされたのかを次に考察した。そこでは，連続的な変化を前提とし，機能分析というアセスメント法に基づいてひとまとまりの行動に介入をする行動療法とは対照的に，生活や人生の文脈自体が介入の対象とされ，新たな文脈を規定する初期条件と拘束条件を設定することによって介入が進められているものと想定された。そして本事例では，治療者の「目前の課題をよく把握してからそれに適合する方法を適用する」というアセスメントが初期条件となり，描画という自己表現をするための構造と，治療者のどんな場合にも逃げない率直な対応や返答がぶれない拘束条件を作り出したことが，決定的なセラピー促進要因になったと考えられた。最後に，本来治療者個人が「人生の行路に沿って時間をかけて積み上げていくほかない」介入のための技術が，いかに伝承されていくのかという点に注目し，事例研究の持つ機能にふれて，本論文の結びとした。</p>

The primary purpose of this study is to identify words that are of special importance for reading newspapers. In the Newspaper Corpus of 579,849 running words, 588 word families are identified as Newspaper Words. These words account for 6.8% of the running words in the corpus. When combined, proper names and 2,521 families of the General Service List of English Words (GSL) and the NWL make up 92.5% of the running words in the corpus. This is lower than the 98% ideal coverage required for understanding a text successfully, but very high given the small vocabulary size. Thus, the NWL will give the best return for vocabulary learning to learners of English as a foreign language who wish to read newspapers as soon as possible. 本研究の目的は新聞を読むのに必要な語彙を特定することである。Newspaperコーパスに記載された579,849語の中から6.8％に上る588語をNewspaper Wordsとして選び出した。固有名詞、General Service List of English Wordsの2,521語、NWLの語彙を総計するとコーパスの92.5％になる。テキストを理解するのに必要とされている98％よりはやや低い数値であるが、NWL全体の総語数を考慮すれば非常に高い値であるということができる。したがってNWLは新聞英語を早く読めるようになりたいと望む英語学習者にとっては最も効率のよいものであるということができる。

Deliberating on and analyzing ideas about teaching can lead to an improvement in our teaching practice. By taking a reflexive stance, we can thoughtfully grapple with issues of theory-practice dichotomy. Cognitive “received knowledge” from books or teacher training, and emotional “experiential knowledge” which can come from participating in language learning often do not “gel” and this is manifested in tensions in practice. Classroom learning experience can feed back into received knowledge to develop classroom practice, so an interest in where one’s teaching knowledge comes from can lead to a better understanding of practice. Through interviews, six university English teachers who are studying or have formally studied Japanese reflected on their experiences as learners and how those experiences have informed their teaching practices. Results show that although situated in different contexts and settings, the participants are not fixed upon any one method and that self-understanding emerges through engagement and reconsidering received knowledge to gain new perspectives on classroom reality. 教育方法について振り返り、考えをさまざまな角度から分析してみるというのは指導実践を向上させるのに大変役に立つ。このような内省的なアプローチを取ることにより、理論と実践が乖離していることが理解できる。本や研修会などを通して得た認知レベルの知識と、自らが外国語を学んだ情意的な経験とが結びつかないことが多く、そのため教室で指導している際にどちらを優先すればよいのかについて悩むことにもなる。このような問題を解決するためには、自らの外国語の学習体験を振り返りかつ深く内省することが助けとなる。これが延いては学習者の指導にも役立つ。指導に関する知識はどこから得たものなのかを振り返ってみることにより現在の指導方法を向上させることができるであろう。本研究では現在大学で英語教育を行っている教員６名に面接調査を行い、過去の日本語学習の経験が現在の指導法にどのように影響しているかを探った。結果の示すところ、それぞれ教育活動を行っている環境や状況は異なっているが、だれも特定のひとつの教授法を使っているということはないという傾向がどの教員にも共通して見られた。また、自分が実際にどのような指導を行っているかを振り返り、すでにもっている知識を自分の指導に照らし合わせて内省することにより、はじめて確固たる知識がえられるということがわかった。

In this article I describe three action research projects done by teachers at Teachers College, Columbia University, Tokyo MA TESOL Program. I discuss the benefits of doing action research (how it helps us to make more informed teaching decisions; gain skills at posing and solving teaching problems; expand reflective skills; create a forum to discuss teaching issues and beliefs), as well as its limitations (a focus only on problems; a narrowly defined linear process). I then highlight other avenues to expand awareness, such as "exploring to see what happens" by trying the opposite, exploring "what we actually do" as opposed to "what we think we do," considering "what we believe in relation to what we do," and exploring to "gain emotional clarity." アクションリサーチを使った教育について考える-検証例、利点と限界 本論文では、コロンビア大学ティーチャーズ･カレッジ東京校英語教授法修士課程プログラムで学ぶ教師たちによって行われた３つのアクションリサーチについて語り、アクションリサーチがもたらす利点（教師自身の自律した教育的判断能力、問題提示能力、解決能力、また、反省能力が高まること。教育やその信念について話し合う場が提供されること。）、欠点（問題点のみに着目していること。狭く定義づけられた直線的なプロセスであること。）について議論する。また、何が起こるかを見るために逆のことをやってみる、自分がやっていると思っていることではなく実際に自分がやっていることを検証する、教師自身の教育信念と実際の行動を照らし合わせる、自分の感じていることを明確にする等、教育意識をより高めるための方法も明示する。

In this study, I examined points arising in L2 English activities during which Japanese students resolved to collaborate with classmates. These points included moments when students were specifically instructed to work alone, were rebuked for collaborating, or both. Of issue here was that the value and meaning ascribed by the English native speaker (NS) teachers to Japanese students’ spontaneous peer collaboration (SPC) reflected a prevailing assumption about L1 collaboration: that students were off task, were less proficient members of the class, or lacked motivation. The study explored the miscommunication that could result as students upheld what they viewed as an acceptable classroom behaviour, namely peer support through verbal collaboration, while simultaneously attempting to gain teacher recognition as competent and engaged members of the class. Candid student insights illustrated that during language-learning activities students should be given greater freedom to collaborate when and with whom they desire without fear that this will negatively impact how their performance is perceived by the instructor. 本研究は、日本人生徒が英語でのL2活動中に他のクラスメイトと協力しようとする時に生じる問題点を考察する。対象となる場面は、個人で活動するように事前に指導を受けた場合、他の生徒と協力しようとし注意された場合、その両方の場合である。ここでの問題は、日本人生徒が授業中に自発的にピア・コラボレーション(SPC)することに関し、英語母語話者(NS)の教師は、母語での共同作業では生徒は集中せず、生徒のクラス内での能力は低く、モチベーションがないと判断してしまうことだ。この研究では、生徒がクラスルーム内で許される行為だと思う事をする事によって起こるミスコミュニケーションを扱う。これらのミスコミュニケーションは、生徒が自分は有能で真剣に取り組んでいるという事を先生に理解してもらおうとすると共に、言葉を通じて協力することで得られる生徒間のサポートに関してである。生徒の率直な意見からは、外国語を勉強する為の活動中は、先生にマイナス評価をされる心配なく、生徒は自由にいつでも誰とでも協力できるべきと感じていることが分かった。

Discussions on English education policies often focus on their reception by teachers. However, this can overlook what students think about policy, and students’ support of policies may be crucial to their success. This is especially relevant to English education at universities, given the autonomy that university students have. To understand what students think about policies, a survey on certain aspects of Japanese educational policies and English language education was conducted at a private university. The survey focused on students’ attitudes towards guroubaru jinzai or global workers, a buzzword in Japanese EFL policies. Overall, students reported interest in becoming global workers, but they did not feel that this was realistic for themselves. This suggests that to gain the support necessary from students for their own cultivation as global workers in line with current EFL policies, it may be necessary to show the relevance to their own lives, from their own perspectives. 文科省の英語教育におけるポリシーの１つは「グローバル人材育成」であるが、大学英語教育では、学習に対する学生の主体的な意識や態度が重要である。中堅大学の学生を対象とした調査の結果、彼らは「国際的に活躍することが現代社会で求められている」と認識している一方、「そのような人材になることは自分にとって現実的ではない」と考えていることが分かった。理由の１つは「英語に対する自信のなさ」であるが、同時に「英語学習」には興味を持つ学生も多かった。「グローバル人材の必要性の認識」と「英語学習に対する興味」を利用することで、中堅大学の学生にとっても文科省のポリシーの実現が可能であると考えられる。

This article reports on the effect of three types of written feedback on student motivation at a girl's private high school in Japan. It addresses the question of whether students who receive meaning-focused feedback show a greater degree of positive motivation than students who receive either positive comments or error-focused feedback. The only statistically significant difference among the three types of feedback was that the positive-comments group was significantly less eager to get their journals back each week than the meaning-focused feedback group. The overall findings of this study reconfirm the positive effect journal writing, regardless of feedback type, has on motivation. All three groups reported that they felt it had a positive effect on their English, and that it had been a worthwhile for them. 本論文は、日本の某私立女子高校を調査対象にして、英文日記の３通りの筆記によるフィードバック法を比較し、それらが生徒の＜やる気＞に及ぼす効果について報告したものである。日記の「内容に関するフィードバック」を受ける生徒が、「誉め言葉によるフィードバック」、あるいは英語の「誤謬訂正のフィードバック」を受けるものよりも、より＜やる気＞を引き起こされるものかどうかという点を検証した。3通りのフィードバックを比較して、統計数値上唯一有意差があったのは、「誉め言葉のフィードバック」を受けるグループは、「内容に関するフィードバック」を受けるグループに比べて、毎週の日記の返却(つまりフィードバックされること)にそれほど熱心ではなかったということである。ただ研究全般から再確認できることは、いかなるフィードバックであれ、英文日記を書くことは、英語学習に対する生徒の＜やる気＞に対してプラス効果を及ぼすということであり、それは３グループすべての生徒が、日記をつけることは自分たちの英語にプラス効果をもたらし、やりがいのあるものであったと報告していることに表れている。

プーラ大学日本語・日本文化学科（以下、本学科）の目的の一つに、学習者 の日本語運用能力の向上が挙げられる。そのための指標として、学習者の単 位取得率を増加させることが授業における目標の一つとなっている。本学科 では、限られた時間とスタッフの中で、3年間の総括的目標であるCEFR/B2 をできるだけ多くの学生がクリアするために効率のよい授業運営をすること が求められる。本論は、全体的な進度の調整を目的として、具体的な授業ス ケジュールを作成・実施した結果について、特に理解度の不足により変更を 余儀なくされた時の対応と結果について考察したものである。

This study explores how the perceived likelihood of giving compliments differs between Americans and Japanese: that is, those who are said to belong to Brown & Levinson's positive politeness and negative politeness cultures, respectively. The results of the detailed analyses of a survey of 44 American and 44 Japanese university students suggest four major differences in compliment-giving behaviors. First, the distinction between uchi and soto affects Japanese compliment-giving behaviors, as Japanese tend to be less polite toward family members in general. This is probably a more influential factor for Japanese than the categories of close and distant, which is highly influential for Americans (the closer the relationship to the addressee, the more willing Americans are to give compliments). Second, the influence of gender difference on the likelihood of complimenting others is greater for Americans than for Japanese. Third, psychological closeness sometimes overrides status and power differences in the compliment-giving behaviors of Japanese, while status and power tend to prevent Americans from complimenting higher-status addressees. Lastly, Americans appear to believe that complimenting someone is relatively easy, while Japanese tend to think complimenting is more difficult. アメリカ人と日本人がほめ行動を起こす可能性の度合いについて比較した。彼らは、ブラウン＆レビンソンの唱える積極的ポライトネス文化と消極的ポライトネス文化にそれぞれ属すると言われている。日米各44名の大学生を対象として質問紙による調査を実施したところ、以下の4つが相違点として浮かび上がった。一点目は、アメリカ人のほめ行動では対話者間の親疎関係がほめの出現に影響を及ぼしていたのに対して、日本人ではウチ・ソトの区別が強い影響力を持っているということである。一般的に日本人は家族に対して丁寧ではないが、アメリカ人は対話者との距離が近いほど相手をほめようとする傾向が強くなる。二点目は、ほめ行動を起こす可能性の男女差はアメリカ人のほうが日本人に比べて大きいことが挙げられる。三点目は、アメリカ人のほめにおいては相手の地位や力がその行為を妨げる要因となりがちであるが、日本人の場合は相手との精神的距離が地位や力関係に優ることがあるという点である。最後に、アメリカ人は相手をほめることは比較的たやすいことであると感じる一方で、日本人はほめを難しいものと考える傾向があった。

Both teacher autonomy and program coordination have potential benefits. Recent research on English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) programs in the United States has suggested that programs tend to have significant levels of coordination and collaboration while maintaining teacher autonomy. Although Japanese universities have long had a culture of teacher autonomy, EFL educators based in higher educational institutions have described efforts to coordinate their programs. However, researchers have not explicitly analyzed EFL programs in Japan to determine how widespread these coordination efforts have become. In this study, we empirically evaluated levels of teacher autonomy, top-down coordination, and administration–staff collaboration in EFL programs in Japanese universities and colleges. The results suggest that these programs have high levels of curricular autonomy and general teaching autonomy related to pedagogy and classroom management. In contrast, the programs are reported to have low levels of top-down coordination and, compared to U.S. ESOL programs, significantly less coordination and collaboration. 教師の自律（teacher autonomy）とプログラム内でのトップダウンによる協調（program coordination）には潜在的利益がある。米国のESOL（English for speakers of other languages）プログラムに関する最近の研究によると、教師の自律を維持すると同時に、プログラム内でトップダウンの協調と協働（collaboration）を行う傾向がある。日本の大学では、長年教師の自律を支える文化がある一方で、高等教育機関に勤務する多くのEFL教育者は、プログラム内の協調に努力してきたと報告している。しかし、日本のEFLプログラムにおいてそのような協調の努力がどの程度行われているかを明確に分析した研究はほとんどない。そこで、本研究では、日本の大学や短大のEFLプログラムにおける教師の自律、トップダウン式による協調、管理部門と教育スタッフ間の協働のレベルの評価を行った。その結果、これらのプログラムは、教授法と教室マネジメントに関して、カリキュラム上、また一般教育上の自律を担保していることを示唆している。対照的に、トップダウン式の協調はあまり行われていないことが報告された。米国におけるESOLプログラムと比較すると、日本のプログラムでは、トップダウンによる協調と協働のレベルが低いことが判明した。

The Common European Framework of Reference-Japan (CEFR-J), like its original counterpart, the CEFR, uses illustrative descriptors (can-do statements) that describe communicative competencies to measure learner proficiency and progress. Language learners are leveled in a CEFR-J category according to achievement on can-do statements gauged by self-assessment, an external rater (such as a teacher), or from external test scores. The CEFR-J, unlike the CEFR, currently lacks widely-available benchmarked performance samples for measuring student language proficiency, leaving administrations or teachers to estimate CEFR-J ability from test scores or from interactions with students. The current analysis measured ability scores from students and teachers on CEFR-J can-do statement achievement, comparing them to scores on an in-house designed placement test. Students’ self-assessment ratings did not correlate with their test scores, teachers varied in severity when making ability estimates for the same students, and no consistent response patterning between students and teachers was found. The results highlight that norming raters, controlling for severity, and training students on self-assessment are likely all required if the CEFR-J is to be used for measuring language learning progress, especially until established guidelines for estimating ability are available for the CEFR-J. The limitations of using the CEFR-J as an assessment tool and the assumption that teachers can accurately estimate student ability are discussed. ヨーロッパ言語共通参照枠（CEFR）をベースに構築されたCEFR-Japan(CEFR-J)は、学習者の到達度と伸びを測ることを目的に日本の教育機関で最近採用されるようになったシステムである。CEFR-Jは、その基となった枠組みと同様に、段階的に上がる難易度を基にしたコミュニケーション能力を説明するdescriptor（can-doという能力記述文：can-do statements）により構成されている。言語学習者はこのdescriptorの到達度によってレベル分けされる。この評価は、学習者の自己評価、教師などの他の評価者による評価、外部試験の結果から導き出されるものである。これらの評価により、学習者のCEFR-Jにおけるレベルが分かり、標準的にできるであろうとされる能力が示されることになるが、それを使用する人や教師次第になっている部分もある。そこで、もしこのようなシステムを利用する目的が評価レベルの標準化ということであるなら、学習者、教師、そしてテスト評価の判断の間に高い一貫性が保たれなければならない。本論での分析は、CEFR-Jのdescriptorについての学生と教師の能力判断の一貫性、そしてその判断が学内作成のプレイスメントテストの点数と一致するかを検証することを目的としている。学生と教師の判断には顕著な関係はみられず、学生の自己評価の結果はテストの点数と相関性がなかった。この結果により、もしCEFR-J が評価の標準化を目的に使用されるのであれば、規範的な評価者と自己評価についての学生指導の必要性が重要になるといえる。評価のツールとしてCEFR-Jを使うことの限界、及び説明的なdescriptorのシステムに本来備わるcan-do熟達度という概念に関する問題を議論する。

In light of recent research on student-centered learning, researchers have highlighted the need for strategies and tools to foster learner autonomy. Particularly within the area of vocabulary acquisition, the need for such strategies and tools is justified by the scope and depth of vocabulary that a learner needs in order to achieve a high proficiency level in a foreign language. This paper proposes the use of flowcharts as a metacognitive vocabulary learning strategy that helps promote vocabulary acquisition as well as foster learner autonomy. The justification for using such a strategy is discussed as well as practical suggestions for how it can be used in the classroom. 近年における学生主体の学習に関する研究を探ってみると、研究者たちは学習者オートノミーを促進する(学習)方略とツールの必要性を強調している。特に語彙習得の分野において、このような方略とツールの必要性は、学習者が外国語(学習)において高い習熟度に到達するために必要となる語彙の範囲と深みという観点から、正当化されるものである。本論文は、語彙習得の促進および学習者オートノミーの奨励を手助けするメタ認知的語彙学習方略として、フローチャートの使用を推奨する。この方略を使用する正当性、またこの方略をクラスルームでどう用いるかという実践的な提議について検討する。

The purpose of this paper is to present an argument that because the classroom is a micro-culture, teachers are in a unique position to create a classroom culture that realizes the progress which society is striving toward. For this reason, the English language classroom is an ideal place to challenge gender stereotypes and collectively deconstruct some aspects of the gender binary. The first section of the paper discusses why it is necessary to heighten awareness of gender issues in the classroom in terms of both inequalities and pressures for behavior. The second section outlines four practical steps teachers can take to support gender diversity in their learning communities. First, un-gendering pedagogical practices, the language taught and used, and the materials presented. Second, creating a safe, authentic and diversity-positive culture in the classroom. Third, increasing visible support for LGBTQ+ individuals. Finally, finding a way to model an authentic comfort with difference as a teacher. 教員はユニークな立場にある。何故なら教室はマイクロカルチャーであり、教員は自分たちの理想とする社会を教室文化に反映することができるからである。このような理由から、教室はジェンダー・ステレオタイプに挑戦し、議論するのに最適な場所だと考えられる。本稿の第一部では、ジェンダー問題に対する学生の意識を何故高める必要があるのかを論じる。第二部では、教室コミュニティにおいて多様性を支援するために教師がとることができる四つの実践的なステップを概説する。これらのステップとは、第一に、教材・使用言語・指導方法において性による偏見を無くす、第二に、教室内に安全で本格的かつ多様性を肯定する文化を作り上げる、第三に、LGBTQ+の人びとへの目に見える支援を増やす、そして最後に、教員として他者との違いを受け入れ、安心して本来の自分を出すモデルとなり、それを示す方法を見つける、というものである。

Teaching culture is essential in a language class, as language is an inseparable part of culture. Yet incorporating culture into an EFL class can give rise to challenges, such as indefinable target cultures, the creation of possible stereotypes, unforeseeable results, difficulties in assessment, and the elusive concept of culture itself. Accepting those challenges, culture can be incorporated into a language classroom not by explicitly introducing a specific culture, but by attempting to raise the students’ cultural awareness. In this study we presented students with real-life stories of intercultural experiences in university English classes. The students’ responses to reading prompts, class reflections, and interviews demonstrated the effectiveness of the teaching activity in raising cultural awareness. We also found that raising cultural awareness leads to a wider awareness of “unknowns.” Our results suggest that teaching culture implicitly may be effective in raising the cultural awareness of students in a language class. 言語の授業において文化を教えることは必要不可欠である。言語は文化の一部であり切り離すことはできないからである。しかし、EFL（外国語としての英語）の授業において文化を組み入れることは難しい。ターゲットとする文化が決められないこと、ステレオタイプを生む可能性があること、結果が見えづらいこと、評価が困難であること、そして、文化の定義そのものの問題である。これらの課題を受け入れ、特定の文化を明示的に指導するのではなく、学習者の文化的意識を高めることを目指して文化を指導することが有効である。本研究では、大学の英語の授業で、教員の異文化体験の実話を教材とした。その結果、教材への問いや、リフレクション及びインタビューから、異文化意識の向上が見られた。異文化意識はまた、「知らないことへの意識」というさらに深い意識へとつながった。本研究は学習者の異文化意識向上のために文化を非明示的に指導する可能性を示唆する。

In this paper, I reflect on the experience of introducing the topic of drag to Japanese high school EFL 1st- (n = 23) and 3rd-year (n = 86) students through the reality TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race. Each step of the process is explained, from a questionnaire and minilecture on drag culture to the viewing of the show itself. Students’ written responses to the class were analyzed. These indicated that students were able to understand and apply to their own lives complex concepts from the show, especially gender as a social construct, along with the importance of creativity and individuality. Based on these data, I argue that drag and its rejection of gender norms are both of interest to students and a useful content area for teaching English through a content and language integrated learning (CLIL) approach. Finally, I offer practical advice for teachers interested in showing similar material in their own classrooms. 本稿では、リアリティ番組である『ル・ポールのドラァグレース』を通じて、英語を外国語として学習する日本人高校1年生（23名）と3年生（86名）にドラァグクイーンを紹介した経験について考察する。ドラァグ文化にまつわるアンケート、簡単な講義、実際の番組視聴、これらの各段階を本稿で説明する。また、学習者のリアクションペーパーを定量的かつ定性的に分析する。分析の結果、学習者は番組を通じて、複雑な概念を理解し、実生活への適用が可能であったことを指摘する。特にジェンダーは社会的に構築されるものであること、および個人の創造性と個性の重要性を理解しえたことを指摘する。これらの結果から、ドラァグとジェンダーにまつわる規範意識を捨てることは、ともに学習者にとり関心が高く、内容言語統合型学習（CLIL）による英語教授を行う上で有効な教材であるといえる。最後に、類似の教材を活用することに関心のある教員へ実践的なアドバイスを提案する。

This paper adopts the perspective of students, groups, and entire classes as being complex adaptive systems, or CAS. Two important concepts from complexity theory, adaptive walks and fitness landscapes, can be used to create optimal language learning conditions for producing changes in students’ L2 systems. Every configuration of L2 traits a student might have can be assigned a fitness value, that is, an L2 competence level. The set of all such values creates an abstract landscape, the fitness landscape. By changing traits, the position on the landscape changes, meaning a student can take a journey on the landscape, known as an adaptive walk, in the search for higher peaks, that is, higher competence. The goal becomes establishing conditions in which adaptive walks are encouraged. Several L2 activities are introduced as applications of these ideas. 学生、グループ、およびクラス全体は、複雑系適応システムと考えられる。複雑系理論における2つの概念、アダプティブ・ウォーク(適応型歩行)とフィットネス・ランドスケープは、言語学習に最適な条件を創り出す一助となる。それぞれの学生は皆、文法や発音など異なるレベルのL2 スキルを保有している。これらのスキルを組み合わせることで全体的な L2 能力すなわちフィットネス・バリューを生み出すことが可能となる。このような異なるレベルの組み合わせによる全てのユニットとそれに伴うフィットネス・バリューはフィットネス・ランドスケーブ(適応度地形)を創りだす。ある L2 スキルが向上または低下する時、フィットネス・バリューは変化する。それによってランドスケープ上の位置が変化する。スキルのレベル変化を通じて学生はアダプティブ・ウォークとして知られるランドスケープを旅する。旅の到達目標は、アダプティブ・ウォークを奨励してランドスケープ上の高位のフィットネルピークを見出すことである。これらの理念の応用としていくつかの L2 アクティビティを導入する。

Demographic and policy changes in Japan during the first decades of the twenty-first century have resulted in significantly more people growing older and dying alone, especially in densely populated urban centers. As the national Long-Term Care Insurance system continues to promote community-based elder care despite weakened family and neighborhood bonds, the home has become an intensified space of care as well as a potential zone of abandonment. This article considers these divergent potentials of home and their implications for thinking about the material, ethical, and aesthetic limits of dwelling as embodied in the specter and spectacle of the lonely death (kodokushi). Such deaths and the empty houses they leave behind index other forms of loss emerging from intertwined histories of the family, welfare, and housing and construction policy. I argue that the connection between local experiences of aging and death and national policies can be found in mediating images and narratives of mourning, which seek to locate and make sense of the inability to dwell. Approaching unwitnessed deaths as specters at the limits of dwelling allows us to move beyond the shock of lonely death and draws our attention instead to the links between caring, mourning, and the home in an aged society.

21世紀前半の20年間における日本の人口動態と政策の変化の結果、特に人口密集した都心部で、一人で老後を過ごし、亡くなっていく人々の数が著しく増大した。家族や近隣共同体の絆が弱まっているにもかかわらず、国の介護保険制度が地域を基盤とした在宅高齢者介護を促進し続けているため、居宅は介護の場となるだけでなく、潜在的な放棄の場ともなっている。この記事では、これらの居宅の多様な可能性を検討する中で、孤独死の幻影(spectacle)と光景(spectacle)が具現化した場としての住まい(dwelling)の物質的、倫理的、そして美的な限界について考察する。孤独死と残された空家は、家族や福祉、住宅、そして建設政策などが絡み合った歴史から生じる社会的な喪失を写し出すのだ。ここで議論されるのは、地域における高齢化および死の経験と国家政策との関係が、居住(dwell)不可能性を見定め、理解しようと努める哀悼のイメージや物語を仲介することで見出しうるということである。誰にも目撃されることのなかった死を、住まいの限界に現れた幻影としてアプローチすることで、孤独死のショックを乗り越え、高齢化社会における思いやりと、哀悼、そして居宅との関連性に注目することが可能となる。

The notion that interactional competence in the L2 emerges naturally once sufficient lexical/grammatical knowledge is in place was disputed by Widdowson (1978), but this notion may still underlie some attitudes toward language learning in an institutional context. In this paper, I describe some central features of the genre of conversation and contrast these with the traditional interactional structures found in Japanese university classrooms. I suggest that the ability of learners to interact in the L2 requires both extensive opportunities for learners to engage in non-directed, phatic interactions supported by the teaching of interactional language skills. The approach may be initially challenging and confusing for learners, but over time, students align with the approach and interaction becomes smoother and more natural. 第二言語習得において、正確で高度な語彙と文法の知識が習得されれば相互行為能力は自然と身に付くものだと信じられてきた。Widdowson (1978)により批判に晒された現在でも、この根拠のない神話は未だに現場に浸透し、言語学習の姿勢形成に影響力を行使している感が否めない。本稿では、実際の学生の会話において話題・ジャンルの主要な特徴を記述し、日本の大学において元来の教授法で実施されている会話と比較した。。第二言語によるやりとりに必要とされる要素は、教師にお膳立てされることなく交感的なやりとりに参与する豊富な機会と、明確な相互行為能力指導の二点である。当初はこの新しいアプローチに困惑する学習者を生む場合もあるが、継続することで学生も徐々に適応し、第二言語によるやりとりを元来の教授法ではたどり着けないスムーズなものに変容させることができると考えられる。

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis permasalahan yang dihadapi mahasiswa PPL Real Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Jepang Undiksha Tahun 2018 dalam melaksanakan penerapan keterampilan berbasis pendekatan saintifik. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Metode yang digunakan adalah angket kepada 32 orang dan wawancara kepada 10 orang. Hasil Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kesulitan yang dihadapi mahasiswa PPL Real dalam penerapan keterampilan mengajar berbasis pendekatan saintifik (5M) sebagai berikut. 1) Aspek mengamati yaitu mempersiapkan objek yang digunakan. 2) Aspek menanya yaitu mendorong peserta didik untuk aktif. 3) Aspek mencoba yaitu menerapkan kegiatan pembelajaran yang berorientasi pada hasil yang bisa diukur dan diamati. 4) Aspek mengasosiasi yaitu memfasilitasi peserta didik untuk melakukan proses mengasosiasi. 5) Aspek mengomunikasikan yaitu mengontrol waktu. As more and more students with disabilities (SWDs) are identified in postsecondary education in Japan, there is an increasing need for English language teachers, program administrators, and curriculum designers to create inclusive learning environments that provide reasonable accommodations for such students. This paper outlines the current landscape for SWDs in institutes of higher education in Japan, reviews approaches to systematizing support for SWDs within language departments, and outlines the challenges tertiary EFL program administrators and teachers are likely to face in providing such support. The paper concludes with a call for language educators to actively destigmatize disabilities in the classroom, as well as to continue bridging the gap between language teaching and special education through research and resource sharing. 日本の中等教育後の教育において，障がいのある学生（SWDs）が徐々に認められつつある中，英語教育者，プログラム管理者，カリキュラムデザイナーが，そのような学生に合理的な学びの場を提供することのできる包括的な学習環境をつくるニーズが高まっている。この論文は，日本の高等教育機関の現在のSWDsの状況の概要を述べた後，言語学部内でSWDs支援のシステム化を行うための様々なアプローチを提案し，また、そのような支援を提供する中で第三期のEFLプログラム管理者と教員が直面する可能性が高いと思われる課題をまとめている。この論文は、言語教育者が教室における障がいという汚名を積極的に返上することと，研究と情報共有を通して，言語教育と特別支援教育の間の橋渡しを続けるよう呼びかけ，締めくくりとする。

From this year, foreign language, in most cases English, instruction has been made compulsory for 5th and 6th graders once a week with the aim of building up the foundation of communication abilities. A debatable point for many asks if instruction at this age level is meaningful; (i.e., will it lead to higher English proficiency later at the secondary school?) Also in question is “the foundation of communicative competence,” which is supposedly the goal of elementary school English. Still others include: What is the relationship between nurturing positive attitudes toward English learning and building up basic English communication skills? How can such primitive English be assessed in non-threatening and formative manners? How does the result differ depending on the pedagogical technique? The purpose of this talk is to explore these points and to share how the findings from a recent project show what students can achieve through elementary school English education and what this will mean for Junior High School teachers. 今年から小学校5年生と6年生に対して週1回の外国語（たいていの場合英語）指導が、コミュニケーション能力の素地形成をねらいとして始まっている。多くの人が議論の余地を感じている問いは、このレベルの英語教育は意味があるのかどうか、つまり、この時期の教育のおかげで後の中等教育でより高いレベルの英語力につながっていくのだろうかということである。また、小学校英語の目的であると言われている「コミュニケーション能力の素地」とはそもそも何なのだろうか。また他の問いとしては、英語学習に肯定的な態度を養うことと、基本的な英語コミュニケーションスキルを育てることとはどういう関係にあるのだろうか、こんな初歩的なレベルの英語を恐怖感を感じさせずに形成的な効果のあるやり方でアセスメントをするにはどうすればよいのだろうか、その結果は教え方によってどう変わってくるのだろうか、などがある。本講演の目的は、こうした問いを検討し、近年行ってきたあるプロジェクトの結果をふまえて、小学校英語教育を通して子どもたちができるようになってきたことは何なのか、またそのことが中学校の先生にとって何を意味するのかを公開することにある。

Although the use of authentic material is widely advocated, it is often assumed that the difficulty posed by such material may demotivate lower-level students. This paper reports on a study showing that excessively difficult authentic listening can be motivational for such learners, partly because of their very inability to comprehend it. Another finding examined is that selling, or emphasizing the authentic provenance of such materials, can positively effect students’ perception of the lesson in which they are used. Facebook has become a worldwide phenomenon and is currently the most popular social networking service by worldwide active users. Being so widely used, its potential for use in intercultural exchanges is promising. However, as yet there is little discussion of how Facebook can best be used in an intercultural exchange. A valuable feature of Facebook is the ability to create a Facebook Group where instructors have control of membership, and where activities designed to encourage language learning and greater cultural awareness can be implemented. This paper will describe and evaluate an intercultural exchange between university students in Japan and Indonesia that took place during 2011. The exchange was found to be beneficial because students were able to learn about another culture while improving their English. フェイスブックはすでに世界的に認知されており、現在のところ、世界中で実際に使用されるソーシャル・ネットワーク・サービス(SNS)としては、最もよく利用されている。このように広く使用されていることを考えれば、それを異文化間交流に利用できることは明らである。しかし、どうすれば最も効果的にフェイスブックを異文化間交流に利用できるかと言う議論は、まだほとんどなされていない。フェイスブックの有益な特徴は、フェイスブックグループを作って指導者がその参加者を管理できること、そして、言語学習の助けとなり、さらなる文化の気づきを促すようなアクティビティの設定が可能なことである。本論では、2011年に行った日本とインドネシアの大学生同士の異文化間交流について、解説と評価を行う。学生たちは交流を通して自らの英語能力を高め、相手の文化について学ぶことができたことから、この交流は評価できると考える。

Agar (1994) coined the word languaculture to highlight the inseparability of language and culture. He explained the connection by suggesting that culture is something that “happens” when people are learning to communicate in another language. In this paper, languaculture is presented as a natural learning process that may be exploited for classroom use. First an outside-the-classroom languaculture journey is described using images from archaeology: discovery, excavation, analysis, and archiving. This process is then explored as a way to enrich foreign language education inside the classroom. Although time and curricular constraints of English education in Japan often make it difficult to add culture to lesson plans, the lexical elements themselves can be used as effective tools to help students uncover culture. When culture does happen, students will have an opportunity to deepen their vocabulary knowledge and further develop their appreciation of difference. Agarはlanguacultureという造語をつくり出し、言語(language)と文化(culture)の切り離せない関係性に焦点をあてた（1994）。文化とは人々が別の言語で伝えることを学ぶ際に「起こる」ものであることを示すことで、この関係性を説明している。本論では、Languacultureを実際の教室で利用することができる自然な学習プロセスとして、紹介している。はじめに、教室外でのlanguacultureの過程を、発見・発掘・分析・記録保管といった考古学のイメージを用いて論じている。次に、このプロセスの教室内での外国語教育を豊かにする可能性について探っている。日本では英語教育に充てられた時間とカリキュラム上の縛りがあるために、普段の授業計画に文化の項目を上乗せするのは容易ではないが、語彙の学習そのものが、学生が文化を掘りおこすのに効果的な手段となりえる。実際に文化が「起こる」とき、学生は自らの語彙知識を深め、さらに文化の違いを認識する力を伸ばす機会を手にするのである。

In this paper the results of an online survey regarding the usefulness of Facebook for L2 learning will be presented. The survey was carried out with 118 L2 German learners in Japan. The results suggest that for most participants, Facebook is a suitable tool for improving their L2 skills because it enables them to establish or to maintain social contacts with native speakers and to have authentic opportunities to express themselves in the L2. The participants mentioned three particularly effective activities afforded by the social network: (a) reading L2 posts on the newsfeed, (b) writing one’s own posts and commenting on friends’ posts, as well as (c) using the Messenger app for writing private messages in the L2. Most of the survey’s participants noted an improvement of their reading and writing skills as well as an increase of their vocabulary and cultural understanding. 本稿は、第二外国語習得に対するFacebookの有用性に関するオンライン調査の結果を考察するものである。この調査は、第二外国語としてドイツ語を学ぶ118名の日本人に対して実施された。調査結果から、参加者の大多数にとって、Facebookは学習言語を上達させることに適したツールであるということがわかる。これは、Facebookによって学習者が母語話者と社会的な関係を構築または維持し、学習言語で考えを述べる本当の機会を持つことが可能になるからである。参加者が挙げた、とりわけ効果的であった活動は、学習言語での投稿を読むこと、自分自身で書くこと、友人の投稿にコメントをすること、学習言語でプライベートメッセージを書くためにMessengerを使用することであった。調査参加者においては、読解と作文の技能、語彙、文化的理解の向上が注目に値する。

The 2018 Quantitative Research Training Project offered language teachers based in Japan an opportunity to learn about quantitative research methods, get practical experience doing classroom-based research, and collaborate throughout the process with a group of their peers. Four teachers share their insight from their experience doing this research to inform and encourage other language teachers. Schmidt describes how he overcame doubts to team up with a colleague and move forward with a quantitative study. Takaesu emphasizes the importance of monitoring student response rates to questionnaires to avoid shrinking sample sizes. Connolly writes about the effort and dedication required to complete a study. Cooper highlights how meaningful research can still be done with a small class. Although an increasing number of children are being raised bi-culturally and bilingually, there seems to be little unity in research on the successful “how” of it, especially for languages besides English. Most parents are left at the mercy of trial and error, resulting in varying levels of success. This article relates the visible effects of the one parent, one language (OPOL) method and shows how they vary depending on the time share of each parent with the child(ren). In addition, the article notes how differences in the parents’ own upbringing can prove to be an unexpected obstacle. Even so, their ability to act as second-order observers can offer benefits to their children’s evolving biculturalism and bilingualism. In recent years, the use of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) worldwide has given rise to the question of whether English as a Native Language (ENL) norms should continue to be used in the English Language Teaching (ELT) classroom. In this paper I explore the controversial issues surrounding the implications of ELF for ELT by considering the practicalities of language teaching and learning. I argue that ELF should not be seen as in competition with ENL or as a replacement of ENL for pedagogical purposes. Instead, ENL and ELF can play different but complementary roles in ELT. Although ENL may remain as the primary model for pedagogy as a point of reference, there is a need for teachers to raise students’ awareness of ELF use in reality, including the notion of language variation in ELF and the role of English in today’s world. 英語がリンガフランカとして世界中で使用されるに至り、ここにひとつの疑問が浮かび上がる。それは、母語としての英語（以下ENL）使用の基準が教室で英語を教える際に使われ続けてもいいのかどうか、という疑問である。本稿では、言語指導そして言語学習における実用性を念頭に、英語というリンガフランカ（以下ELF）の基準を英語教育（以下ELT）の指導に適用することをめぐる問題について考察する。筆者の考えでは、ELFをENLと競争関係にあるもの、あるいは指導を目的としたENLの代用として見なすべきではない。そうではなく、ENLとELFはそれぞれに異なった働きが、しかもELTの場で互いを補い合う働きがある。ENLは指導のための第一義的な参照対象であり続けると思われるが、その一方で、ELFの言語的多様性に対する考え方、そして現代社会における英語の役割を含めたELFの現実そのものを学習者が認識するよう、教師は努める必要がある。

While the pedagogical value of teachers’ questioning in classrooms has been well studied, what exactly teachers do if a question fails to obtain an adequate response has not yet been sufficiently addressed from an interactional perspective. This study examines how and why foreign language teachers deal with this problem and how they pursue a response. Conversation analysis of EFL classroom interactions demonstrated that teachers employed three strategies to repair a question: a modification of the failed question in the target language, codeswitching into L1 as a further step of the modification, and proffering candidate responses to the failed question. Teachers do not merely simplify and sharpen the focus of the original question successively to pursue a response, but they teach English in interaction by trying to help students understand the meaning of the questions in English. Implications for teachers who face the problem of failed questions are discussed. これまで教師による「質問」の教育上の価値はよく研究されてきたものの、「質問」が学生の回答を得ることに失敗した場合に教師はどうするのかということは相互行為的視点からは十分に研究されてこなかった。本稿は外国語教室の中で教師が、失敗となった質問をどのようにそしてなぜその方法で扱い回答を求めていくのかを研究するものである。外国語としての英語教室での相互行為の会話分析により、教師は次の３つの方略を取ることが分かった。失敗となった質問の目標言語による改良、そしてその次の段階としての学生の第１言語へのコードスイッチイング、回答例の提案である。教師はターン毎に質問を易しくしたり焦点を絞ったりするだけでなく、目標言語である英語で「質問」を理解させようと試みることによって、英語を相互行為の中で教授していることが明らかとなった。最後に失敗となった質問という問題に直面する教師への示唆を議論し、本稿の結びとする。

This article describes an application of ethnographically-informed approaches to discourse analysis that attempts to bring about change in EFL classroom practice. The project was conducted by a teacher-researcher at a Japanese university and one group of learners that he taught. It centres on the use of video as a tool to bring about discussions between the teacher and learners that help them to better understand both their own classroom behaviour and each other’s. The paper discusses the insights that such a project can bring as well as some problems inherent in conducting a project of this kind. This study aimed to identify pre-service teachers’ views and experiences after participating in a compulsory communication course including impromptu conversation practice with exchange students as well as to make recommendations for future courses by understanding their views through their prior experiences. Their past experiences are extremely likely to influence their ability to communicate with assistant language teachers (ALTs) in Japanese schools especially in relation to impromptu conversations. Thus, in 2019, a communication course was developed for first-year pre-service teachers that included impromptu conversation practice for three lessons with six teacher training students (TTSs) on MEXT scholarships and two exchange students. After the course, Japanese students completed a survey and the results indicated that due to the conversation practice many students grasped a better understanding of their language ability, gained motivation to communicate with foreigners, and most students felt three or more lessons are suitable for such practice. The results underscore the need for classes focusing on impromptu conversation practice to better prepare pre-service teachers to work with ALTs. 本研究は、交換留学生と即興で行う会話練習を含む、必修のコミュニケーションコースを受講した教育実習生たちの経験や見解等を調査し、その調査結果から得られる教育的示唆を明らかにすることを目的としている。教育実習生たちの事前の学習経験は、実際の教育実習で彼らが外国語指導助手（ALT）とコミュニケーションをとることができる能力、特に即興でやりとりすることができる能力に、きわめて大きな影響を与えると予想される。それゆえ、筆者は、2019年に交換留学生2人と日本の文部科学省（MEXT）の資金援助を受けている教員研修留学生(TTS)6人が参加する3コマ（1コマ90分）の会話レッスンを含むコミュニケーションコースを開設し、同コースに参加した1年生の教育実習生27人に対して調査を行った。その調査結果によれば、留学生との会話練習は、多くの学生に自分の言語能力をより良く理解させ、外国人とコミュニケーションを図ろうとする意欲を向上させるものであった。また、大分部の学生は3コマ以上の会話レッスンが適切であると感じていた。この調査結果は、ALTと将来一緒に授業をする教育実習生のレベルを向上させるためには、即興で行う会話練習に焦点を当てたクラスが必要であることを強く示している。

Students might approach reading with a sense of anxiety if they are unable to completely comprehend the text that they are reading. The purpose of this article is to determine whether the introduction of a mindful reading technique decreases anxiety about unfamiliar vocabulary and grammatical structures, increases focus, and builds confidence, thereby contributing to a more positive reading experience. Forty-one Japanese university students took part in the study. After the introduction of a mindfulness technique and putting it into practice, a questionnaire was administered to all 41 students taking part in the study three weeks after the introduction of the technique to determine its effectiveness. Results indicate that many students found mindfulness helpful when reading. 学生達は自分が読んでいる外国語の文章を完全に理解することができていないため、読むことについて不安を抱いている可能性がある。本論は、（自分の呼吸に注意を向けながら読書する）マインドフルリーディングのテクニックの導入が、親しみのない単語や文法構造についての不安を減らし、集中力と自信を高め、その結果より積極的なリーディング体験に寄与する手助けとなるかどうか判断することを目的としている。41人の日本の大学生が本研究に参加した。マインドフルリーディングのテクニックを導入した三週間後に、有用性を判断するアンケートを実施した。結果は、読むときにマインドフルネスが有用であると、多くの被験者が認識していることを示した。

The "virtuous circle of the good reader" (Nuttall, 2006, p.127) is considered the key to the success of extensive reading. Teachers make efforts to create the virtuous circle in the act of reading for each student. From the point of individual reading, this works well. From the point of designing a class where students learn collaboratively, the virtuous circle needs something extra. This paper would argue that from the perspective of self-determination theory, it is indispensable to incorporate dialogue with others into the virtuous circle. To implement the idea, the IRC (Interactive Reading Community) Project has been carried out. The results of student questionnaires are analyzed using reader-response theory to see the effect that "others" have. Also, from the perspective of "general education," how reading books in the IRC Project can foster learning culture (Dewey, 1989) is examined. 多読の授業を実践するうえで「読書の好循環 (Nuttall, 2005)」が鍵を握っていると考えられており、教師はそれを生み出すために様々な努力を重ねている。その好循環は、「個人」を単位とした読書活動の指針として有益である。しかし、授業を「他者との協同的な学びの実践」として捉えると、その好循環にプラスαが必要となる。本論は、その好循環に「他者との出会いと対話」が必要であることを、 Deci & Ryan (1996)の「自己決定理論」の観点から議論する。そして、「他者」のいる読書環境を教室とインターネット上に創出してきた IRC(Interactive Reading Community) Project を紹介する。その教育的効果をアンケート結果で示し、 2つの観点から考察する。1つは「読者反応理論」から、もう1つは「一般教育」の英語の授業において「教養 (Dewey, 1899)」を豊かにする観点から考察する。

This article focuses on the notions of interculturality and identity. It outlines some of the ways in which identities can be made relevant in conversation when interactants orient to certain items of cultural knowledge that are normatively bound to those identity categories. According to complex dynamic systems theory (CDST), L2 learning is a nonlinear process in which learners’ language systems are always changing and iterating through interactions with the learning environment (Larsen-Freeman, 2019). Recursive conversations (RCs) are a type of classroom practice that was developed from CDST, providing learners with iterative conversation practice and reflection opportunities (Kindt, 2004). Research published by Bowyer (2019) showed that learners believed that RCs enabled them to achieve increased performance in conversation. This present study is an attempt to explore this belief by examining the performance of four selected learners and to explain the changes through a detailed account of their experiences. A mixed methods exploratory-explanatory approach, utilizing quantitative performance analysis of transcribed conversations and qualitative interviews, was used. Results showed that learners’ fluency and interactional competence improved, but accuracy was largely unaffected. Furthermore, speaking partners and feedback quality were significant factors. 複雑性ダイナミック・システム理論（CDST）によると、第2言語学習は学習者の言語システムが学習環境とともにある反復的会話活動を通して常に変化し、進化し続ける過程である（ラーセンフリーマン、2019年）。反復的言語活動（RCs）はCDSTを利用するための教室活動の一種であり、学習者に反復的会話練習と内省の機会を与える（キント、2004年）。ボイヤー（2019年）によると、学習者たちはRCsが会話におけるパフォーマンス向上に役立つと信じている。本研究では、4人の学習者のパフォーマンスに注目することで彼らのRCsを通しての学習経験によって起きた変化の説明をする事を目的とし、テキストに変換された会話の量的分析とインタビューにおける質的分析を基とした混合型探究及び説明的調査を試みた。結果として、学習者の流暢さと相互行為能力が向上したが、正確さに関しては影響が見られなかった。しかしながら、会話活動のパートナーとフィードバックの質が重要な要因を担っていることが示された。

Fram Kitagawa is a major producer of contemporary art festivals in Japan. His optimistic vision connects artists, farmers, rural residents, and researchers to redefine the notion of local identity and place. Doing so revitalizes rural Japanese communities by increasing awareness through the restorative process of satoyama, which allows for connections between the history of the landscape, aesthetics, and local socio-economic issues. Kitagawa’s active pursuit of dialogue within the multiple narratives of local and regional histories makes the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennali precursors to other expansive social art practices. More importantly, the restorative efforts of Kitagawa and the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale endure despite the economic recession, the Chuetsu earthquake, polarization of the urban and rural, and the Tohoku devastation on 3/11. This persistence depends upon linking artistic practices with social development rooted in place-making and place-identity. Increased awareness by Western artists might set up Echigo-Tsumari as a model for transformative art elsewhere on the scale of Kitagawa’s vision. The model could inspire, for example, more work in the vein of Theaster Gates, the American ceramic and social practice installation artists, who argues that artists should do more than just make objects. Rather, we should “make the thing that makes the thing,” and as Gates asserts, we should transform culture. 北川フラムは、日本における現代アート・フェスティバルの重要なプロデューサーの一人である。彼の前向きな考え方は、アーティスト、農民、地方の住民、そして地域のアイデンティティや場所の概念の再定義を行う研究者を結びつけている。この結びつきは里山の回復プロセスに対する人々の気づきを促し、日本の地方コミュニテイを活性化している。さらにこの結びつきによって、風景の歴史、美学、地域の社会経済問題を結びつけることも可能となっている。北川が地元や地方の歴史に関する多様な物語と活発に対話しつづけてきたことによって、越後妻有トリエンナーレは他の社会的アート実践のさきがけとなった。より重要なのは、経済的不況、中越地震、都市と地方の二極化、そして３１１の東日本大震災の発生にもかかわらず、北川と越後妻有トリエンナーレが活力を失わずに努力を続けてきたということである。この努力の継続は、場所づくりや場所のアイデンティティに根付いた社会的発展とアートによる実践が結びついていることに依っている。西洋のアーティストたちから、ますますこのトリエンナーレに注目があつまるようになっている。そのため、北川の考えるような規模の場所でということであれば、世界の別のどこかで実践される変革的アートのモデルとして越後妻有が機能することになるだろう。陶芸や社会実践的インスタレーションを製作するアメリカのアーティストであるスイースター・ゲイツは、アーティストはただ作品を作る以上のことをすべきだと主張する。越後妻有のようなアートのモデルは、この彼の考えに連なるような作品を生み出しうるだろう。われわれはゲイツの主張するように、「モノをつくるモノをつくる」べきである。つまり、われわれは文化を変革すべきなのである。 This article is in Japanese.

The aim of this study was to better understand pre-service teachers’ familiarity with and interest in phonics and how these factors might influence the development of future phonics courses. For this study, 86 first year undergraduate students attending a national university for teacher education completed a survey in 2017. Participants from one class submitted a journal after attending three lessons introducing phonics. The survey results showed that most participants did not learn phonics before entering university, and admitted they had trouble reading new English words. Furthermore, according to the journal comments, participants gained an awareness of their own pronunciation skills, and an understanding of the key points of phonics and how it can be taught using songs. 本研究では、フォニックスに関する教育実習生の学習経験と関心、及びこれらの要素が将来のフォニックスコース開発にどのような影響を与えるかをより把握することを目的とした。本研究に関して、2017年にある国立教育大学で86名の1年生の学部生が調査を行いました。また、あるクラスからの参加者が、フォニックスを紹介するレッスンに3回参加した後、日誌を提出しました。その調査結果によると、ほとんどの参加者は大学入学前にフォニックスを習得しておらず、ほとんどの参加者は英語の新しい単語を読むのに問題があると認めました。さらに、その日誌のコメントによると、自分の発音スキル、フォニックスの要点、及び歌をどのように使って教えているかという認識が得られたと結論づけることができました。

This study examines the impact of a U. S. teacher training program on eight Japanese English professionals’ teaching beliefs and practices after the completion of the program. It also investigates the teachers’ perspectives on how they resolve tensions, if any, between their teaching beliefs, Japanese teaching contexts, and new knowledge learned in the program. The data were collected mainly through qualitative methods such as multiple interviews with teachers and through document analysis. The results suggest that while the teachers considered the training experiences to be positive, they faced difficulties in applying their new knowledge in their own teaching contexts due to school, social, and cross-cultural factors. Despite the challenges, the data also revealed that the teachers attempted to negotiate the gap between expectations in these contexts and their teaching beliefs. We conclude that in order to understand the impact of teacher education programs, it is important to explore teachers’ perspectives on their learning to teach. 本論文では、アメリカにおける英語教員研修が、研修後日本人英語教員の信念や授業にどのような効果をもたらすかについて８名の参加者を対象として考察する。さらに、帰国後、彼らが英語教員としての信念、日本の教育環境、研修で学んだ知識、これらの狭間で何らかの困難を経験しているかどうか、経験しているならばそれをどのように解決しようとしているかについてもあわせて調査する。本研究はインタビューと資料分析（content analysis）により主に質的データを収集分析した。その結果、教師は研修を肯定的に捉えているが、学校や社会環境、国境を越えた文化的な違いなどから、研修で得た知識を応用するのが困難であると感じていることが分かった。しかし一方では、多様な英語教育への期待と本人の英語教員としての信念とに折り合いをつけながら授業を進めていこうと努力していることも分かった。教員研修の効果を理解するには、参加者が指導技能習得のために学ぶということを、どのように捉えているのかを知ることが重要であると結論づけた。

Autobiographic and narrative research has recently grown in stature in the field of social sciences. Inspired by Asian TESOL researchers’ critical analyses of self-stories, this paper attempts to reflect upon the author’s personal history in relation to English and discuss ways in which she can position herself as both an English learner and a non-native English speaker (NNES) teacher. The self-reflection and discussion is followed by an argument for performativity, a notion drawing on poststructuralism to understand language itself and the global spread of English. This paper, itself a performative act conducted by a secondary school teacher, exemplifies the concept. The non-academic schoolteacher’s very act of writing in an academic journal aims to contribute to questioning assumptions underlying the relationship between theory and practice and to reconstituting the academic fields of applied linguistics and TESOL. 近年、自伝的かつ語りを含む研究が社会科学の分野で活発になってきている。本稿では、TESOLを専門とする、あるアジア人研究者が彼女たち自身の物語を素材として実施した批判的分析に着想を得て、英語にまつわる自己の歴史を振り返り、英語学習者としての、またNNESの英語教師としてのポジショナリティをどこに位置づけるのかという問題について議論する。さらに、この批判的自己内省を経て、言語そのもの、あるいは英語という言語の地球規模的広がりを理解するために、ポスト構造主義の概念であるパフォーマティヴィティについて検証する。なお、本稿これ自体がある高校教師によるパフォーマティヴな実践であることに言及しておきたい。研究者ではなく、一高校教師が学術雑誌に投稿することを通じ、理論と実践の関係性の背後にある前提に疑問を投げかけ、その結果、応用言語学やTESOLという学問分野の再構築に貢献できることを希望している。

2012年4月から実施の現行学習指導要領には高校の英語に関して、クラスを実際のコミュニケーションの場にするために、英語のクラスは英語で行われるべきであると明記されている。高校教師の「英語の授業は英語で」行う方針に対しての認知、授業実践、また教師の認知と授業実践に影響を与えている要因に関して調査をするために、2015年度に3人の高校英語教師へのインタビューとその教師が担当する授業見学を行った。Borg (2006)の言語教師の枠組みを参考に分析したインタビュー結果によると、教師のTEFLやTESOLコースへの参加経験、同僚との支援体制、また生徒の英語で行われる英語の授業への肯定的な反応などが、教師の認知と授業実践に影響を与えていることがわかった。授業見学データは教師がどれくらい英語と日本語を使っているか、またいつ英語と日本語を使っているかという視点で分析した。結果、英語と日本語使用の程度は、各教師によって異なっていることがわかった。インタビューと授業見学から、大学入試が教師の認知と授業実践に著しく影響を与えていることが浮き彫りとなった。 The MEXT Course of Study for senior high school, enacted in April 2012, states that English classes are to be conducted in English to transform classes into locations of real communication. To investigate teachers’ cognition of the policy of “English classes in English,” their classroom practice, and factors affecting their cognition and classroom practice, I interviewed and conducted classroom observations of three senior high school teachers during the 2015 academic year. Drawing on Borg’s 2006 framework of elements and processes in language teacher cognition, the analysis of interview data shows that teachers’ professional experience of taking part in TEFL or TESOL courses, support from co-teachers, and their students’ positive responses to the classes affected the teachers’ cognition and classroom practice. Classroom observation data were analyzed in terms of when and how much the teachers use English and Japanese. The findings show that the extent to which English and Japanese were used varied depending on each teacher. From both the interviews and the observations, it was found that the presence of entrance examinations affected the teachers’ cognition and classroom practices significantly.

As the development of bottom-up skills in L2 listening instruction begins to gain greater attention, more and more EFL course books are beginning to include exercises that are designed to improve learners’ abilities to understand reduced forms such as gonna, wanna, and didja. As a step towards understanding how forms such these are being integrated into these materials, this study examined 13 EFL course books and analyzed the number and frequency of the forms they contain, as well as the types of exercises they include. The number and frequency data was then compared to 13 different books that are specifically designed to teach reduced forms, thus allowing for a determination of the extent of coverage course books are providing. Overall, the results provided a favorable picture of course books’ handling of reduced forms. However, some recommendations are made for improving coverage and making instruction more effective. L2リスニング指導においてボトムアップスキルの開発が注目されはじめる中、学習者のgonna, wanna, didjaのような弱形に対する理解度を高めることを目的とした練習問題が含まれているEFL用テキストが増えている。弱形がこれらの教材にどのように導入されているかを明らかにするために、本研究では13冊のテキストを調査対象とし、それらの中に含まれている弱形の数および出現頻度、練習問題の種類を分析した。さらに、数と出現頻度のデータを、弱形を中心に取り上げる専門書の調査データと比較することによって、テキストでの収録範囲を確認した。分析の結果、テキストにおける弱形の取り扱い方は、概ね専門書の調査結果と一致し、良好であるということが分かった。しかし、収録範囲の細部や教育方針に関しては、改善の余地があると思われる。

Japanese universities are increasing their course offerings through English-medium instruction (EMI) and even full-degree English-taught programs (ETP), but language proficiency and the integration of language support courses and EMI classes remain challenges. English for academic purposes (EAP) courses might be used as a bridge to EMI coursework just as they assist international students coming to study in the UK. UK EAP programs are explored through statistics on international students, a description of testing and degree entry language requirements, and semi-structured interviews with 10 EAP program directors and course leaders who outline program funding and autonomy; program perception by university communities; teachers, course materials, goals, and objectives; program and teacher evaluation; teacher support and faculty development. 日本の大学では、教授言語としての英語（EMI: English as a Medium for Instruction）の授業や、すべての単位を英語で修得するプログラム（ETP: English-Taught Programs）が増えてきているので、英語能力測定試験や学術目的のための英語（EAP: English for Academic Purposes）を大学の入学試験に利用するという、より伝統的なアプローチを考察することは有益である。英国におけるEAPプログラムが、そのモデルとして役立つと思われる。本論では、EAPプログラムを次の点から考察する。まず、英国における留学生の試験や入学要件の統計について述べる。次に、プログラムディレクターやコースリーダーとの（臨機応変に質問を変える）半構造化面接のデータについて述べる。前述の両者は、プログラムの資金と自治、大学コミュニティーによるプログラムの認知、教員・教科書・目的、プログラムと教員の評価、教員支援と専門能力の育成などを意図する。さらに、日本の学習課程が本アプローチを採用する方法を探るための提案を行う。

Despite recent policy reforms by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) emphasising a change towards a predominately target-language (TL)-based EFL classroom environment, studies have suggested that desire for L1 use by both English learners and many teachers remains prevalent in Japan. The question, then, becomes whether a resolution exists to balance the rising conflict between government policy and actual classroom practice in Japanese EFL education. The purpose of this study was to investigate the opinions of both Japanese EFL students (n = 373) and teachers (n = 261) regarding the use of the L1 (Japanese) in the L2 (English) learning process and the ensuing potential to introduce a bilingual translanguaging approach to Japanese EFL education on the whole. The findings suggest that, although there appears to be a space for a translanguaging approach to EFL education in Japan, the success would depend largely on how willing both teachers and students are to take it up and by the level of training and education provided to both sides. 英語の授業は主に英語で行われるべきだということを強調する文部科学省の政策にも関わらず、授業における日本語使用はまだ日本人学習者にも日本人教師にも好まれているという研究報告がある。これによる大きな問題は、日本の英語教育において、政府の政策と実際の授業実践の格差に解決策があるのかということだ。本論文は、第二言語（英語）を学習する際の第一言語（日本語）の使用に関する学習者（373名）と教師（261名）の意見、そしてそれに基づいたトランスランゲージングの可能性を調査した研究を報告する。分析の結果、日本の英語教育においてトランスランゲージングの可能性はあるが、その成功は学習者と教師がそれをどのように受け入れるかと両者が受ける教育と研修に大きく影響されることが示された。
