Abstract:
Twelve university students made an English presentation to introduce various puppet theaters from around the world at an international conference as an extracurricular project. Considering the English presentation as a task for the students, the teacher employed Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) and set four steps for the students to perform: developing background knowledge of the topic, conducting research on puppet theaters in each country, writing and revising a presentation script, and practicing making a presentation. The result of this project showed that TBLT worked effectively in enc

Abstract:
While oral presentations are an important part of many university classes, because of the time and effort needed to transcribe spoken presentations for analysis, presentations are an underrepresented area of research. In order to help better understand the vocabulary used in oral presentations, 22 impromptu and prepared presentations from 11 first-year students were analyzed for lexical diversity using three different measures. The lexical diversity of these presentations was then correlated to a measure of the participants’ vocabulary knowledge. While there was a positive relationship between

The pilot study described in this paper builds on existing studies of lexical diversity to determine the extent to which learners’ L2 vocabulary proficiency affects the lexical diversity of the texts they produce across three modes of production. To do this, the researcher examined the relationship between first-year students’ (n = 17) L2 vocabulary knowledge, as measured by Webb, Sasao, and Ballance’s (2017) updated Vocabulary Levels Test (uVLT), and the lexical diversity of their academic writing, academic presentations, and academic discussions. In this study, I explored a potential personality bias in peer assessment of EFL oral presentations. First-year Japanese university students enrolled in an oral presentation class (N = 21) made presentations and evaluated their classmates’ presentations over two semesters. Rater severity was estimated using the many-facet Rasch measurement model. Raters’ personality traits were assessed based on their responses to a questionnaire containing 4 variables: dogmatism, individuality, evaluation apprehension, and dependency on others. Peer Assisted Learning benefits both higher and lower level students, either from the act of teaching, or by learning from more capable classmates. With this in mind the author devised a presentation task, for a heterogeneous (mixed ability) ESL class in Japan, to review units from the course textbook. Students were placed in groups consisting of two pairs, each pair with a high and low level student, and were asked to prepare presentations within a limited timeframe. The unique points of the method are as follows: First, the students in Japan recorded their own task-based group work with iPads, analyzed it, and compared it to the model video.
