Due to the increasingly competition in the global liner shipping market in recent years, in order to enhance the market position in major countries and provide better services, liner shipping companies (LSCs) must set up agents or branch offices at major locations. For the headquarters of LCSs, how to objectively and fairly evaluate the operating performance of their branch offices is an important issue. In order to investigate the operating efficiency of each branch office, this study selected the branch offices of a global liner shipping company as decision making units (DMUs) and conducted data envelopment analyses (DEA) to measure the efficiency scores. This study used CCR and BCC models with a Malmquist Productivity Index to measure the contemporary and intertemporal efficiency of DMUs in the period of 2015 to 2016 by two inputs (number of employee, operating expense) and three outputs (number of containers, number of bill of lading and commission). The methodology and results of this study are helpful for LSCs to develop managerial strategies. The methodology and results of this study are helpful for LSCs to develop managerial strategies to improve the efficiency of their branch offices.

Full textIn my empirical analysis, I firstly trace how global production network changes the production process and unravel the mutual influences between the labor market with local clustering and the employers' recruitment strategies. I take them as the key background factors in the shaping of the politics of flexible production. Then, I use the case study of HiTek and analyze how it implements the customized mass production with high performance and high flexibility on the shop floor in the face of volatile product markets and labor market. I point out that in order to secure the subordination and better cooperation from its workers, HiTeck gives up the direct coercive despotic factory regime and executes the flexible despotism combining with enforcing strict disciplinary management, responding to workers' interests and rights, and even establishing the internal communication mechanisms. However, I indicate that although workers obtain more legal rights, they fail to effectively improve their labor conditions under the new labor control. In the meantime, the social status of migrant workers restricts their claims for social benefits and enhances their mobility. As a result, workers have to voice and seek to make use labor market opportunities for improving their conditions. Finally, I stress that the consequence of the interaction between the global flexible production and the workers' resistance against labor control leads to the uncertain employment relationship characterized by the high turnover of workers. I also emphasize that it is Chinese workers who finally pay high costs for such a relationship: they not only fail to enhance bargaining powers with their employers, but also suffer from an insecure and uncertain environment.
The dissertation develops an analytical framework of the politics of flexible production in the age of the globalizing production. My theoretical discussion begins with the theory of production politics developed by Michael Burawoy. I emphasize that labor process should be examined not only within the workplace, but also in relation to external societal factors. I argue that the pursuit of flexibility of global production changes the structuring of labor process: the external markets are not static conditions to manufacturers, but are now becoming dynamic factors shaping production arrangements and labor control. Hence, I indicate that flexible production has brought about a sophisticated triangular relationship between the buyers from developed countries, the transnational manufacturers in newly industrialized countries, and the workers in developing countries, particularly in China. This is quite different from the previous studies wherein the focus is placed on a simple dual relationship between manufactures and workers within a single country.

In the Late 20th Century, transnational enterprises had re-engineering at value, efficiency, and cooperate of supply chain management (SCM). For example: Using innovation and speed improve the final value of needs, promote efficiency by lean production, replace beat the price down with mutual trust and combine the cooperation of supply chain. However, many enterprises found it’s hard to produce the synergy during re-engineering, because of the huge and stiff organization. The adaptive and change capacity of worldwide supply chain participants became more and more important, and the scope of research was from the flexibility of operation-level to the flexibility of organizational structure, culture and strategy. The scholar and industry attempt to probe into and set up the effective flexible strategy frame as consolidating and strengthening the blueprint of synergy in supply chain. This research is to probe into the flexibility of worldwide supply chain, and use the Li & Fung Group doing a case study report. It includes confirming the research questions, building theory, choosing the case, collecting data, organizing the research structure, verifying data and giving conclusions and suggestions. Compare information such as files of Li & Fung Group in recent 15 years, publications, interviews, speech records etc. to 33 items of flexibility of supply chain examined indicator which Volberda studied, we can obtain the following conclusions: First, there are 40 countries in the world and 65 offices in the Li & Fung Group, and doing end-to-end and most broad supply chain combination, which accord with Volberda’s view that must build abundant mix of flexibility in dynamic, complicated, unpredictable super-competitive environment. Second, Li & Fung Group took demand-pull as motivity, and devoted to increasing leading time, carrying on the whole world disperse production, pursuing scale economic benefits and leaving the stocks in upper course. We found Li & Fung Group already had high flexibility in structure and strategy. Third, Li & Fung Group regards customer as the center, they have a flat-organization, give operational autonomy to sales department, let the staff internal start-up, using sharing the values and open human resources structure to perfect its organizational design. In order to build a long-term corporate, Li & Fung Group use risk investment filling in the space of product line and talent, and use merger to expand supply chain network size. We find the organizational design of Li & Fung Group can adapt to the dynamic environment. Fourth, on one hand Li & Fung Group stand at intact decision control power, and control tightly to the financial and operational procedure, but authorize sales by a wide margin on the other hand. Honest supply chain partnership is the base of androgyny. After comparing and analysing through 33 items, this research is pointed out that there is abundant flexible ability in technology, structure, culture in the supply chain of Li & Fung Group. Volberda’s flexible theory of the supply chain which used in eastern enterprises can be used in west too.

This is an assessment study of public policy from the aspect of joint efforts of the two sides across the Taiwan Strait to govern the spread of the SARS. From the perspective of global governance, preventing the disease of SARS from its infection over the regions is a world-wide adventure. On the one hand, public sector must comes into the scene for necessary control of its spread and take action for emergent treatments of the inflected areas and peoples. This thesis consists nine main subjects, namely; 1, introduction; 2, review of related literatures on global governance; 3, globalization, global governance and public policy; 4, methodology and framework; 5, challenges and policy responsiveness to/from public sectors; 6, challenges and policy responsiveness to/from private sectors; 7, challenges and policy responsiveness to/from the third sectors; 8, cooperation sought and problems solved; and 9, conclusions: to pursuit of cooperative mechanism.

As empresas chinesas não estão alheadas deste processo, procurando, cada vez mais, expandir os negócios para além das fronteiras nacionais. Contudo, este caminho de internacionalização exige uma estratégia bem definida e pressupõe ultrapassar desafios e obstáculos. A empresa chinesa Huawei Technologies iniciou um processo de internacionalização em 1995, transformando-se, em pouco mais de uma década, num dos gigantes mundiais do setor de telecomunicações. O presente relatório de estágio no âmbito do Mestrado em Estudos Interculturais Português/Chinês: Tradução, Formação e Comunicação Empresarial analisa este caso de sucesso, as características transnacionais da empresa e as suas vantagens competitivas, enquadrando esta análise no contexto de globalização atual.
The fast-paced modern world is characterized by the blurring of geographical distances and the growing interdependence of world economies, in a context of economic globalization. Chinese companies are not remote from this process, they are trying to expand increasingly their business beyond national borders. However, this path of internationalization requires a well-defined strategy in order to overcome challenges and obstacles. The Chinese company Huawei Technologies began a process of internationalization in 1995 and has become one of the global giants of the telecommunications industry, in just over a decade. This internship report for the Master in Portuguese/Chinese Studies tries to analyze Huawei’s success in this context, through the transnational characteristics of the company and its competitive advantages.
