Abstract:
Freewriting (FW) (also known as timed writing or quick writing) is a 10 or 15-minute writing activity used to originate ideas and eliminate writer’s block. It helps students develop and express content by separating idea generation from the editing stage. The activity aids writers in generating content, which can be used for later writings, and also teaches how to write under time pressure. In this paper, I will advocate the use of FW for EFL writing classes. One technique of guided FW will be defined and outlined. Then, the procedure for implementing this activity will be explained, including

Abstract:
A voluntary after school program to prepare students for external speech contests was introduced in a senior high school. The students’ perceptions of, and attitudes towards, the program were assessed. Analysis of the data shows a high level of satisfaction and the participating students reported their confidence and levels of speaking and writing had improved. Furthermore, the program offered new learning contexts that were beneficial to the students and developed their skills in the language areas that they found most difficult. The students also had the opportunity to voice their opinions a

Abstract:
This paper is a report of an exploratory case study with a learner who showed apathetic attitudes in a Japanese university English course. Previous research indicated the influence of self-perception, learner autonomy, and exam washback effects on Japanese learners’ attitudes towards language learning. This study takes a sociocultural approach to contribute to a deeper understanding of the constructive nature of learner agency. Semistructured interviews unexpectedly revealed the learner’s multilingual experiences and ongoing self-directed learning efforts outside the classroom. A thematic anal

Finding a successful classroom activity is a blessing for most ESL/EFL teachers; finding one that works across proficiency levels and age groups is a godsend. This paper details two such activities. The first activity uses a simple word game as a gateway to a much deeper process involving vocabulary development, spelling, sentence formation, paragraph cohesion, and creative story telling. The second activity makes use of the students’ first language (L1) and encourages translation from the second language (L2) to the L1, and back again. Although the use of the L1 in the classroom is a contenti
