Abstract:

In this study, the authors adopted Lou and Noels’s (2016, 2017) Language Mindset Inventory. This was administered to students (N = 825) at 2 universities in southwestern Japan. Factor analysis revealed a 4-factor model, as opposed to the 3- and 6-factor models found by Lou and Noels, suggesting a limited fit within a Japanese EFL context. Regression analysis was used to compare students’ mindsets with their EFL proficiency, revealing a small effect size but positive correlations with growth mindsets and no correlation with fixed mindsets, suggesting that whether students subscribe to growth or fixed mindsets does play a part in proficiency, however, a limited one. Further implications are discussed. 本研究では、Lou and Noels（2016, 2017）のLanguage Mindset Inventoryを採用した。これは、学生の（growth/fixed＝成長型の・固定型の）mindsets（考え方）を明らかにする診断ツールである。調査は、西南日本の2つの大学の学生（N = 825）を対象に実施された。因子分析では、Lou and Noels（2016, 2017）の3因子および6因子モデルとは対照的に、4因子モデルが明らかになった。回帰分析では、学生のmindsetsとEFLの習熟度を比較し、効果量は少ないがgrowth mindsetsとの正の相関関係を明らかにし、fixed mindsetsとの相関関係がないことを示し、英語の習熟には、学生が成長型の考え方（growth mindsets)をするか、または固定型の考え方（fixed mindsets）をするかが、限定的ではあるが、関与していることを示唆する。さらなる分析の含意についても議論する。

Abstract:

Etymological instruction (EI) possesses high face validity for both students and teachers. Research on the benefits of EI has produced mixed results, and very little of it has been done in validating this form of instruction in Japan. This study of 147 students at Fukui University’s Faculty of Medical Sciences investigated two of the perceived benefits of EI. The experimental group received approximately 330 minutes of EI. The test performance of the control and experimental groups was analyzed using regression analysis and Pearson’s product moment correlation across a range of medical terminology questions. There was no statistically significant difference between the control and experimental group. There was no indication that Japanese students were manifesting two of the benefits traditionally associated with EI. Further research is required in order to identify the reasons why EI is not producing the expected benefits. 語源を使った教授法には一定の妥当性があり、これまで学生と教師の両者にとって妥当であるように思われてきた。しかし、先行研究ではその妥当性についての評価は分かれており、日本においてこの解説の妥当性を検証した研究は非常に少ない。本研究では福井大学医学部の147名の学生を対象に、語源を解説する2つの利点を分析した。実験において処理群は約330分の医療用語の語源に関する解説を聞く。そのあと医療用語に関する試験を行い、語源の解説を聞いた処理群とそうでない対照群とのパフォーマンスの違いを回帰分析とピアソンの積率相関係数を使って分析した。分析の結果、処理群と対照群では試験の点数について統計的な有意差は生じなかった。日本人学生を対象とした本研究では、これまで伝統的に言われてきた語源解説の２つの利点を支持する結果は得られなかった。語源解説の利点について、期待される結果が得られなかった原因を特定するためにはさらなる研究が必要である。

Abstract:

Penelitian ini menganalisis honne dan tatemae dari representasi budaya honne dan tatemae pada interaksi tokoh Sakura dengan tokoh lain dalam manga "Naruto" serta faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi penggunaan honne dan tatemae oleh tokoh Sakura. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori representasi dan teori pragmatik. Metode pengumpulan data dengan metode pustaka dan instrumen berupa kartu data. Data yang dikumpulkan kemudian dikelompokkan sesuai rumusan masalah lalu dianalisis menggunakan metode analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil yang ditemukan yaitu representasi honne dan tatemae terlihat pada interaksi tokoh Sakura dengan tokoh lain dalam manga "Naruto". Ketika berinteraksi dengan orang yang memiliki hubungan dekat, pada situasi informal dan saat tujuan tuturnya tidak dapat tersampaikan dengan baik bila menggunakan tatemae, Sakura menggunakan honne. Tetapi pada situasi tutur tertentu Sakura tidak mengungkapkan seluruh pemikirannya di depan publik karena dikhawatirkan akan merusak keharmonisan hubungan apabila hal tersebut diungkapkan seluruhnya. Sedangkan ketika berbicara dengan orang yang lebih tua, orang yang baru dikenal, orang asing, orang yang memiliki jabatan dan status sosial yang lebih tinggi, Sakura menggunakan tatemae. Tatemae juga digunakan oleh Sakura pada situasi formal dan bila honne tidak sesuai dengan norma yang berlaku atau memiliki potensi merusak keharmonisan hubungan dan menyakiti lawan tutur. Faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi penggunaan honne dan tatemae oleh tokoh Sakura yaitu situasi tutur, hubungan dengan lawan tutur dan tujuan tuturan.Kata Kunci : representasi, honne, tatemae 本研究は、サクラのキャラクターが「ナルト」漫画の他のキャラクターとやりとりしているときに、本音と建前の文化を表現することによって、本音と建前の分析を論じて、サクラのキャラクターによる本音と建前の使用に影響を及ぼす要因について明らかにする。本研究は表現理論と実用理論を用いている。使用されるデータは文学的方法であり、データカードの形で器具を使用する。収集したデータは問題の定式化に従ってグループ化され、記述的定性分析法を使用して分析される。その研究の結果、「ナルト」漫画ではサクラと他のキャラクターとの相互作用に本音と建前の表現が見られる。サクラは次のことをするときに本音を使う。彼女と密接な関係を持っている人とのやりとり、非公式な状況でのとき、建前の使用時に会話の目的を正しく伝えることができないとき。しかし、特定の状況では、サクラは彼女の考えをすべて公開していない。それが恐れるので、それが完全に開示されていれば、調和関係に損害を与える。サクラは次のことをするときに建前を使う。高齢者と、より高い地位と社会的地位を持つ人、新しい人と見知らぬ人と話すこと、本音が一般的な規範に従っていない場合、または関係の調和に害を及ぼし特定の関係者に害を及ぼす可能性がある場合、正式な状態である。本音と建前の使用に影響を与える要因は状況、他の人との関係、そして目的。keyword : 表示, 本音, 建前

Abstract:

This study replicates research by Taguchi, Magid, and Papi (2009) regarding the L2 motivational self system, a framework for understanding second language learning motivation in terms of how learners view themselves as users of the second language (Dörnyei, 2005). The study was of 922 students at a national university in Japan who completed a questionnaire measuring 10 different L2 motivational and attitudinal factors. Correlation analyses and structural equation modeling (SEM) of the data supported the validity of the L2 motivational self system as a culture-independent explanation of the factors comprising L2 motivation. The differences that emerged in the strengths of relationships between factors for our sample compared to the Japanese sample in Taguchi et al. are postulated to be mainly due to differences between the two samples in their socioeconomic background and educational context. 本研究は、L2動機づけ自己システムに関する研究であるTaguchi, Magid, and Papi（2009）を追試したものである。L2動機づけ自己システムとは、第二言語学習における動機づけを、学習者が自分を第二言語使用者としてどのように見ているかという観点で理解するための枠組みである（Dörnyei, 2005）。本研究には日本の国立大学生922名が参加した。彼らはL2の動機づけ及び態度に関わる10個の異なる要因を測定するアンケートに回答した。相関分析と構造方程モデリング（SEM）を行った結果、L2動機づけの要因が文化的要因と独立したものであるとするL2動機づけ自己システムの妥当性が支持された。本研究とTaguchiらの研究で要因間の関係の強さに違いが生じたのは、主に社会経済的環境及び教育環境の違いが原因だと思われる。

Abstract:

Tanaka (2017) developed a questionnaire instrument comprised of 2 constructs (group cohesion and group engagement) to assess the group work environment using exploratory factor analysis. The purpose of this study was to examine the construct validity of the scale using Rasch analysis. The sample included 200 second-year Japanese university students who engaged in group work over a semester. The results of the Rasch analysis verified construct validity with acceptable fit statistics, adequately high reliability and separation indices, logical hierarchical ranking of the items, and the unidimensionality of the construct. Tanaka（2017）は探索的因子分析を用いて２つの構成概念（「グループの結束性」と「グループの積極的な関与」）を抽出し、グループワーク環境を測定する質問紙を作成した。本研究の目的はラッシュモデルを用いて当該尺度の構成概念妥当性を検証することである。本研究の調査対象者は一学期にわたりグループワークを行った日本の大学二年生200名である。ラッシュモデルによる分析の結果、適合度統計値が許容範囲内に収まること、信頼性係数と分離指数が十分に高いこと、項目の階層序列が論理的であること、構成概念の一元性が確保されることが明らかになり、尺度の構成概念妥当性が支持された。

Abstract:

The present study examined differential social experiences of international students living in a residential hall called ‘Nihongo House’ (Japanese language house) at a Japanese university. By conducting social network analysis (SNA), as well as making use of ethnographic data collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews, we explain how constellations of interpersonal relations at the house transformed over the course of one semester and what factors were responsible for those changes. Additionally, we present three focal cases of international students. These students—with different motivational orientations, personal dispositions and abilities, and social standing—went through diverse social processes, which led to different levels of success in respective accounts. Based on the analysis, we discuss how social experiences of these students in this particular setting can be understood in relation to their language use and potential development and how this type of residential hall can effectively nurture interpersonal relationships. Abstract in Japanese 本研究では、日本の大学における外国人留学生と日本人学生の人間関係構築プロセスを記述し、言語使用・習得への示唆を考察する。特に、寮という制度的に区切られた空間に着目し、寮の中で、1) どのように人間関係が構築され、コミュニティが形成されたのか、2) どのような要因が人間関係構築やコミュニティ形成に影響を与えたかを明らかにすることを目的とする。対象は日本国内のある大学に近年設置されたテーマ別寮の一つである「日本語ハウス」に住む留学生と日本人14名である。データとして、学期開始前と終了後に行った社会ネットワーク調査、半構造化面接、参与観察、寮に関する文書等を一学期間収集した。これらのデータを言語社会化の観点から分析した結果、メンバーによる活動の企画や参加を通したコミュニティ形成の過程が観察された。一方で、個人による参加のプロセスの違いや、コミュニティ全体としての関係、細分化された個人間での関係といった多層性を持った複雑な人間関係の存在が明らかとなった。また、異なる参加のパターンを見せた３名の留学生のケースを紹介し、彼らの参加プロセスに与えた影響について、言語能力（日本語や英語）、各学生の所属する複数のコミュニティ（サークルや授業等）における日本語ハウスコミュニティの位置づけ、ハウス内外の環境という観点から例証し、生活・学びの環境づくりについて考察する。

Abstract:

Pragmatic awareness in the field of interlanguage pragmatics has been investigated using various factors: linguistic environment, overall second language proficiency, and length of residence in the target language community. In this study, on the basis of a replication of a study on pragmatic and grammatical awareness by Bardovi-Harlig and Dörnyei (1998), learners’ motivational factors were incorporated to investigate the relationship between motivation and pragmatic awareness. Through cluster analysis, the data were analyzed from the perspective of learners’ motivational profiles in order to see how the profiles affect pragmatic awareness. The results revealed that learners’ motivational profiles influence not only their perception of error identification, but also their severity ratings of errors, suggesting that noticing and understanding of the pragmatic information (Schmidt, 1995) are important aspects in the future study of interlanguage pragmatics. 動機づけ要因から見る日本人英語学習者の語用論的意識中間言語語用論の分野において，言語環境，熟達度，目標言語環境への滞在期間等の要因と語用論的意識の関係について調査がなされてきた。本研究では，Bardovi-Harlig and Dörnyei (1998) の研究を基に，学習者の動機づけ要因が語用論的意識に及ぼす影響を，学習者の動機づけプロファイリングから考察した。動機づけを連続体と捉える自己決定理論に基づき，クラスタ分析を用いて学習者を4つのクラスタに分類した。その結果，文法的誤りへの気づきはクラスタ間に違いはなかったが、より自律的である学習者ほど，語用論的誤りへの気づき度が高いことが明らかとなった。このことより，より自律的な学習者であるほど，形式へのnoticingから，語用論的内容を含めたunderstandingへの意識の移行（Schmidt, 1995）がなされていることが示唆された。

Abstract:

In this study, I explored a potential personality bias in peer assessment of EFL oral presentations. First-year Japanese university students enrolled in an oral presentation class (N = 21) made presentations and evaluated their classmates’ presentations over two semesters. Rater severity was estimated using the many-facet Rasch measurement model. Raters’ personality traits were assessed based on their responses to a questionnaire containing 4 variables: dogmatism, individuality, evaluation apprehension, and dependency on others. The results of 2 multiple stepwise regression analyses showed that whereas personalities were not associated with rater severity in the beginning, dependency on others and evaluation apprehension significantly predicted rating severity as time went by. Whereas those with high dependency on others (who valued harmony with others) became more lenient, those with high evaluation apprehension became more severe in their assessment of their classmates’ presentations. These findings indicate a potential personality bias in peer assessment of EFL oral presentations. 本研究は英語で行うプレゼンテーションに対する学生間相互評価において評価者の性格によるバイアスの有無を検証することを目的とする。一クラス21名の大学一年生が二学期にわたりプレゼンテーションおよび相互評価を行った。評価者の厳しさは多相ラッシュモデルで分析した。評価者の性格は、「独断性」、「個の認識・主張」、「評価懸念」、「他者への親和・順応」を含む質問紙への回答によって測定した。重回帰分析の結果、初めは評価者の性格と評価の厳しさに関連はないものの、時間の経過とともに「評価懸念」と「他者への親和・順応」が評価の厳しさに影響を及ぼすことが分かった。具体的には、他者との関係を重視する学生の評価は甘くなり、他者からの評価を気にする学生の評価は厳しくなることが明らかになった。以上のことからオーラルプレゼンテーションの学生間相互評価においては学生評価者の性格に起因するバイアスが生じえることが示された。

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English. Emotions are an integral and significant aspect of human nature and the motivation for behavior. Regular Exercise participation substantially help individual to maintain and increase positive mood. Purposes: to compare the differences of EQ in the following variables: different level of exercise participation, PE class and non-PE class. Methods: BarOn EQ-I measured the EQ of 326 college students, the data was analyzed by Independent group t ratio, Independent Group ANOVA, and Independent Group MANOVA, using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 10.0. Results: The major findings were as follows: 1) College students participated in higher levels of exercise was significantly (p< .05) higher than lower levels exercisers in total EQ score, the five composite scores, and the 15 EQ subscale scores; and 2) Students attending physical education class was significantly (p< .05) higher than the non physical education students in the scores of 'intrapersonal skill', 'interpersonal skill’, 'adaptability’，’stress management’, and 'general mood’. Conclusion: From the above findings, the more the exercise and the physical education participation, the higher the EQ in the college students was ascertained. The importance of increasing exercise participation and physical education should be reinforced and implemented in the college level. Furthermore, the mind-body linkage has been proved through this research. 情緒智力(Emotional Intelligence, El)是察覺，整合，瞭解，及管理情緖之智力；也是関於瞭解自己及別人，與別人建立關係，適應及因應週遭環境，更能成功的應付環境需求的自覺能力。透過從事規律運動所帶來的正面回饋，個人之正向情緒感受會大為提昇。目的：旨在探討不同運動參與程度與體育課參與情況，對大學生情緒智力表現是否有差異。方法：使用BarOn EQi測量326名大學生之情緒智力，統計方法分別採用獨立樣本t考驗、單因子變異數與多因子變異數等加以分析。結果：一、運動參與程度較高之大學生在情緒智商(Emotional Quotient, EQ)總分、五個量表、及15項EQ因子之分數、皆顯著(p< .05)高於運動參與程度較低之大學生。二、參與體育課程之大學生在EQ總分、五個EQ分量表之得分，皆顯著 (p< .05)高於無參與體育課程之大學生。結論：大學生運動參與時間愈多，比運動參與時間較少之大學生有更高的EQ；再者，參與體育課程比沒有參與體育課程之大學生有較高的EQ，因此，本研究中顯示出運動參與及體育課對大學生之重要性，更進而強化身心一元之理論。

Abstract:

In the field of second and foreign language acquisition, a second-language learner’s language (i.e. interlanguage), like the language of native speakers, varies. What is not clear, however, are the underlying causes of this variation. Causes of interlanguage variation such as linguistic contexts, tasks, and interlocutors have been researched. However, there are other important factors in interlanguage variation that are under-researched. Topic of discourse is one such under-researched factor. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between discourse topics and second language learners’ oral performance. Twenty-six Taiwanese students participated in this study. Data were collected from NNS-NNS conversations. It was found that discourse topics have a great impact on the grammatical complexity and fluency of L2 learners’ speech production. 第二言語習得や外国語の習得において、学習者の言語（いわゆる中間言語）も母語話者の習得言語と同様に変異があるということはよく知られているが、未だ解明されていないのは何が変異を起こしているのかである。言語、文脈、タスク、対話者などの要因についてはこれまで比較的多く研究されている。しかしながら談話上のトピックについてはほとんど調査が行われていない。本研究の目的は談話上のトピックと学習者の発話行動の関係を探ることである。26名の台湾人の学生が調査に参加した。非母語話者どうしの対話からデータを収集し分析した結果、談話のトピックは文法構造の複雑度および流暢さに大きく影響することがわかった。

Abstract:

Foreign language anxiety is becoming an important area of research in our profession. Debilitating language anxiety can have profound consequences on the language learning process. The purpose of the present study is to construct a scale to measure the anxiety that Japanese students experience in English language classrooms. First, a pilot test was developed from open-ended questionnaires administered to 148 university students describing specific situations that had made them anxious in English language classrooms, and from five extant scales of foreign language anxiety developed in the U.S. and Canada (Ely, 1986; Gardner, 1985; Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986; MacIntyre & Gardner, 1994; Young, 1990). A total of 317 anxiety-producing situations were initially identified from the students’ reports and 90 items from the extant scales. Elimination of duplicate situations reduced the set of items to the following 12 dimensions: listening, speaking, reading, writing, being asked questions, mistakes, information processing, classroom activities, other classmates, teachers, language skills, and course work. Thirty-eight pilot test items, representing the 12 dimensions, were constructed and administered to 213 university students in first year and second year English classes. Each item was followed by a six-point Likert response scale. Results of factor analysis revealed that English language classroom anxiety was composed of three factors: anxiety about (a) low proficiency in English (e.g., I am anxious about whether I will be able to keep up with the classes), (b) evaluation from classmates (e.g., I am anxious that other students might think I am poor at English), and (c) speaking activities (e.g., I feel nervous when I speak English in class). The test-retest reliability for an interval of eight weeks was .85 for the general scale, and .85, .77, and .71 for the three subscales respectively. The internal consistency, using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, was .92 for the general scale, and .89, .84, and .82 for the subscales respectively. The present scale was determined to be highly reliable. The validity of the scale was assessed by its correlations with Leary’s (1983) Interaction Anxiousness Scale and with Shioya’s (1995) scale of cognitive appraisals of English learning skills and costs. It was posited that those who have high English language classroom anxiety tend to feel anxious in social situations and to consider English language learning troublesome. The general scale and the three subscales were all significantly and positively correlated with both Leary’s and Shioya’s scales, verifying the validity of the present scale. Limitations of the present study and implications for future research were discussed. 本研究は、日本人学生の英語学習に関わる不安の実証的研究の端緒として、英語授業不安尺度を作成し、その信頼性と妥当性を検討したものである。まず予備調査において、既存の外国語不安尺度の項目（全９０項目）と日本人英語学習者の自由記述（全３１７項目）から、本調査に用いる３８の質問項目を選定した。２１３名の大学生に対し６件法で回答を求め、因子分析を行った結果、英語授業不安は、英語力に対する不安、他の学生からの評価に対する不安、および発話活動に対する不安から構成されていることが示された。尺度の信頼性は、アルファ係数と再検査法により十分に高いことが示された。また、「対人不安」および「英語学習におけるスキル・コストの認知」との有意な正の相関関係から、尺度の妥当性が概ね確認された。
