Recent government initiatives have helped increase the number of Japanese students studying abroad. However, our understanding of study abroad and intercultural development is largely informed by research in Western contexts. The purpose of this study was to uncover the key areas that students attribute to their intercultural competence growth and development during a short-term study-abroad program in Thailand. This paper offers findings from open-ended questionnaires that were given to 15 Japanese 2nd-year female university students before and after they participated in a three-week study abroad. Qualitative analysis of the pre-sojourn results primarily revealed health and safety concerns. These concerns were later shown to be mostly unrealized in post-sojourn findings analysis that instead emphasized the importance of students’ psychological and self-fulfillment needs. The implications this research has for language teachers, program coordinators, and other stakeholders who aim to support students’ intercultural development in short-term study-abroad programs are provided. 昨今の政府の取り組みにより、留学へ行く日本の学生数は増加傾向にある。しかし、留学や異文化教育についての私たちの理解は、西洋の文脈における研究から主に情報を得ていると言える。本研究の目的は、タイにおける３週間の留学プログラムの間に、学生の異文化理解やその発達が主に何によってもたらされたのかを明らかにすることだった。参加した１５名の女子学生たち（大学２年生）に対して、留学の事前と事後に自由回答式の質問を与え、その調査結果をもとに明らかになったことをここでは論じていく。事前調査における質的分析では、主に健康や安全面での懸念が明らかになった。これらの懸念は事後調査での分析ではほとんど認められず、代わりに心理的な自己実現欲求が重要な側面であることがわかった。この研究における示唆は、語学教員、留学コーディネーター、そしてその他、短期留学プログラムにおける学生の異文化教育を支援する関係者に向けられる。

The purpose of this quasi-experimental longitudinal study is to investigate the effects of EFL reading circles on Japanese high school students’ reading self-efficacy and reading anxiety. The participants (N = 316), first-year students at a Japanese coeducational high school, participated in regular reading circles over the course of one academic year. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires measuring reading self-efficacy, reading anxiety, and attitudes towards reading circles. A repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to evaluate changes in reading self-efficacy and anxiety. Reading self-efficacy was shown to improve significantly over the course of the academic year, while reading anxiety significantly decreased. Reasons for these changes are discussed. この特定の被験者に対する継続的実験研究の目的は、日本の高校生の英文読解に対する自己効力感と不安感に、EFLリーディングサークルがどのような効果をもたらすかについて調査することである。316人の被験者は日本の男女共学の高校一年生であり、1年間を通して定期的にリーディングサークルに参加した。定量的データは、読解における自己効力感、不安感、そしてリーディングサークルに対する態度を測る質問票から集計されたものである。読解に対する自己効力感と不安感の変化を評価するために反復測定分散分析（ANOVA）が行われた。1年の間に、読解に対する自己効力感は有意に向上し、不安感は有意に減少した。本論では、こういった変化の理由についても論じている。

Penelitian ini menganalisis honne dan tatemae dari representasi budaya honne dan tatemae pada interaksi tokoh Sakura dengan tokoh lain dalam manga "Naruto" serta faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi penggunaan honne dan tatemae oleh tokoh Sakura. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori representasi dan teori pragmatik. Metode pengumpulan data dengan metode pustaka dan instrumen berupa kartu data. Data yang dikumpulkan kemudian dikelompokkan sesuai rumusan masalah lalu dianalisis menggunakan metode analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil yang ditemukan yaitu representasi honne dan tatemae terlihat pada interaksi tokoh Sakura dengan tokoh lain dalam manga "Naruto". Ketika berinteraksi dengan orang yang memiliki hubungan dekat, pada situasi informal dan saat tujuan tuturnya tidak dapat tersampaikan dengan baik bila menggunakan tatemae, Sakura menggunakan honne. Tetapi pada situasi tutur tertentu Sakura tidak mengungkapkan seluruh pemikirannya di depan publik karena dikhawatirkan akan merusak keharmonisan hubungan apabila hal tersebut diungkapkan seluruhnya. Sedangkan ketika berbicara dengan orang yang lebih tua, orang yang baru dikenal, orang asing, orang yang memiliki jabatan dan status sosial yang lebih tinggi, Sakura menggunakan tatemae. Tatemae juga digunakan oleh Sakura pada situasi formal dan bila honne tidak sesuai dengan norma yang berlaku atau memiliki potensi merusak keharmonisan hubungan dan menyakiti lawan tutur. Faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi penggunaan honne dan tatemae oleh tokoh Sakura yaitu situasi tutur, hubungan dengan lawan tutur dan tujuan tuturan.Kata Kunci : representasi, honne, tatemae 本研究は、サクラのキャラクターが「ナルト」漫画の他のキャラクターとやりとりしているときに、本音と建前の文化を表現することによって、本音と建前の分析を論じて、サクラのキャラクターによる本音と建前の使用に影響を及ぼす要因について明らかにする。本研究は表現理論と実用理論を用いている。使用されるデータは文学的方法であり、データカードの形で器具を使用する。収集したデータは問題の定式化に従ってグループ化され、記述的定性分析法を使用して分析される。その研究の結果、「ナルト」漫画ではサクラと他のキャラクターとの相互作用に本音と建前の表現が見られる。サクラは次のことをするときに本音を使う。彼女と密接な関係を持っている人とのやりとり、非公式な状況でのとき、建前の使用時に会話の目的を正しく伝えることができないとき。しかし、特定の状況では、サクラは彼女の考えをすべて公開していない。それが恐れるので、それが完全に開示されていれば、調和関係に損害を与える。サクラは次のことをするときに建前を使う。高齢者と、より高い地位と社会的地位を持つ人、新しい人と見知らぬ人と話すこと、本音が一般的な規範に従っていない場合、または関係の調和に害を及ぼし特定の関係者に害を及ぼす可能性がある場合、正式な状態である。本音と建前の使用に影響を与える要因は状況、他の人との関係、そして目的。keyword : 表示, 本音, 建前

This paper addressed two questions, namely: which six dysfluency variables were the most problematic for Japanese EFL learners, and whether dysfluency changed with increases in Speaking Rate A (Wendel, 1997)? To gather data for the initial question, five categories were formed with varying speaking rates. Data were collected from 55 transcripts from gendered and same-sex discussions that took place in 2016, and form the Japanese University Student Corpus (JUSC). Results showed that the six most problematic kinds of dysfluency included mean length runs (MLRs), number of words, total syllables, cross-talk pausing, amount and percentage of silence, and speaking rates A and B. As for the second research question, data showed significant differences in cross-talk pausing (which doubled), mispronounced words, repetition, and meaningless syllables. Fluency did improve with regard to MLRs. This indicates that while some aspects of fluency do improve with speaking rate, various other aspects of dysfluency also increase. As the most serious issue of dysfluency is that of poor production (number of words), more effort should be focused on getting students to talk longer and with more syntactic complexity. 本論では、日本人のEFL（外国語としての英語）学習者にとって、非流暢性のどの６つの変数が最も問題となるのか、また発声速度Aが上がると非流暢性がどう変化するのかを調査した(Wendel, 1997）。第1の調査質問に関するデータ収集のため、発声速度に応じて5つのカテゴリーを形成した。データは、日本人大学生のコーパス(JUSC)に基づき、2016年に行われた男女の議論を書き起こした55の原稿から集められた。調査結果によると、最も問題のあった非流暢性は、発話の平均的長さ（MLR）、語数、総音節、会話の一時停止、沈黙の量／割合、そして発声速度A／Bであった。第2 の調査質問で有意差を認めたのは、会話の一時停止（倍増）、言い間違い、繰り返し、無意味な音節、であった。MLRについては流暢さが増した。これは流暢さのいくつかの側面が発声速度と共に改善する一方で、非流暢性のいくつかの側面も同様に増加することを示している。非流暢性の最も深刻な問題は語数が不足していることであるから、学生がもっと構文的に複雑な長めの会話をするよう焦点を当てるべきである。

This article reports on the effect of three types of written feedback on student motivation at a girl's private high school in Japan. It addresses the question of whether students who receive meaning-focused feedback show a greater degree of positive motivation than students who receive either positive comments or error-focused feedback. The only statistically significant difference among the three types of feedback was that the positive-comments group was significantly less eager to get their journals back each week than the meaning-focused feedback group. The overall findings of this study reconfirm the positive effect journal writing, regardless of feedback type, has on motivation. All three groups reported that they felt it had a positive effect on their English, and that it had been a worthwhile for them. 本論文は、日本の某私立女子高校を調査対象にして、英文日記の３通りの筆記によるフィードバック法を比較し、それらが生徒の＜やる気＞に及ぼす効果について報告したものである。日記の「内容に関するフィードバック」を受ける生徒が、「誉め言葉によるフィードバック」、あるいは英語の「誤謬訂正のフィードバック」を受けるものよりも、より＜やる気＞を引き起こされるものかどうかという点を検証した。3通りのフィードバックを比較して、統計数値上唯一有意差があったのは、「誉め言葉のフィードバック」を受けるグループは、「内容に関するフィードバック」を受けるグループに比べて、毎週の日記の返却(つまりフィードバックされること)にそれほど熱心ではなかったということである。ただ研究全般から再確認できることは、いかなるフィードバックであれ、英文日記を書くことは、英語学習に対する生徒の＜やる気＞に対してプラス効果を及ぼすということであり、それは３グループすべての生徒が、日記をつけることは自分たちの英語にプラス効果をもたらし、やりがいのあるものであったと報告していることに表れている。
