Abstract:
The number of divorce cases in Hong Kong is soaring in recent years and the stepfamily is an emerging family structure. This exploratory study is aimed at examining difficulties of parenting in stepfamilies through interviews with stepmothers, social workers and teachers. Reports of these stepmothers reveal that they feel overloaded in the stepfamilies and that their spouses do not give them enough support. They complain that their in-laws and relatives create stress rather than offer help in child management. The findings indicated that there are difficulties in communication between the couples, problems between stepmother-stepchild, and in-law relationships. It is suggested that social workers and teachers should cooperate to deal with cultural stereotyping of stepfamily and change negative social attitudes towards members of stepfamilies. Efforts should also be made by these professionals to identify stepmother-stepchild relationship problems with greater sensitivity, and regularity. 香港近年离婚个案数字飚升,再婚家庭成逐渐涌现的家庭架构。这个研究目的是透过访问继母、社工和教师检视再婚家庭的亲职问题。被访继母感到家务繁重、配偶支持不足,在管教子女方面,她们的翁姑及姻亲没有给予援助反而给她们加添压力。资料显示再婚家庭内的夫妇沟通出现困难,继母和继子女及翁姑姻亲关系亦有问题。社工和教师应携手处理文化上将再婚家庭典型化的问题,改变社会人士对这类家庭的负面态度,醒觉地识别继母和继子女关系的问题予以适切介入。

The amount of bride price in the lineage-centered villages in northern Guangdong has decreased, in sharp contrast to its escalation throughout the country. This article examines changes in life styles in the rural communities of northern Guangdong through an analysis of local activities in relation to bride prices. Indicative of the deterioration of the extended family and the weakening of the authority of parents in decision-making, the determination of bride price has shifted from the senior generation to adult children, and the importance of bride price in marriage has decreased accordingly, as has its amount. All these suggest the growing importance of emotion as a defining factor in the family as a result of changes in family relations and the household economy that have undermined traditional family morality. 粤北宗族村的彩礼相对于全国彩礼高涨的形势,不增反而相对下降。本文通过婚姻彩礼行为的分析,透视了粤北传统宗族村落家庭生活方式的变迁。在大家庭生活式微的过程中,婚姻彩礼从由长辈主导到由子女主导。彩礼在婚姻中的作用逐渐弱化,彩礼价格也相对下降。大家庭逐渐丧失公共性,长辈从家长的公共角色转变为父母这样的私人角色。随着家庭政治经济的嬗变,家庭内的伦理道德丧失了存在的需要和基础,情感成为家庭中起主导作用的力量。

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in English; abstract also in Chinese.本文探討關於婚姻與家庭生活的不同觀念的社會及文化意義,比較對於婚姻與家庭生活的兩種不同的理解。傳統的理解是契合於具體的宗教與文化之中的,而當代西方俗世的自由主義理解則尋求將婚姻重塑為自主個人之間的一種平等主義的社會契約。前者把家庭視為社會存在的一種規範形式,是圍繞著一夫一妻制婚姻以及他們的生物學子女(甚或收養子女)而形成的;而後者則把家庭看作符合於當代西方流行的社會公正及性別中立原則而合法構成的機構。This paper explores the social and cultural implications of different conceptions of marriage and family life. It compares traditional understandings of marriage and family, set within particular religions and cultures, to a Western secular liberal understanding, which seeks to recast marriage as a sort of egalitarian social contract between autonomous individuals. Rather than appreciating the family as a normative form of social being constituted around the monogamous marriage of husband and wife and their own biological (and perhaps adopted) children, here the family is to be appreciated as an institution legally to be molded more closely in line with currently popular Western principles of social justice and gender neutrality. This paper presents the findings of a survey study on pre-marital couples in Hong Kong. It is part of a research project to investigate the attitude of young people toward sex, love, marriage, and lifestyle choice in adulthood. The survey sample was a convenient sample. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire from prospective participants of marriage preparation programmes of the collaborating agency. A total of 284 valid questionnaires were collected. The major findings were presented around several thematic areas and implications for family life education were discussed. 本文目的,旨在分享一个探讨香港准婚男女婚姻观念的调查结果。这是一个有关青年人对性、爱、婚姻和成年期不同的生活方式研究计划的其中一个调查。是项调查的样本是便利样本,对象是参与合办机构婚前服务的准婚人士。调查采用问卷来搜集资料,由作答者自行填写。我们共收回二百八十四份有效的问卷。本文把主要结果归纳为几项主题,遂一介绍,并讨论有关结果对家庭生活教育的含义。

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English.以家庭為本位,以血緣關係為紐帶是把握中國傳統的儒家倫理觀和婚姻觀的兩條主線。經過千百年文化積澱,傳統儒家倫理的核心價值和人倫精義早已融入廣大民眾的日常生活和觀念世界,並通過多種多樣的民俗、風俗或習俗得以流傳和積澱,潛移默化地影響和左右人們的觀念與行為。在全球一體化的新世紀,以輔助生殖技術為代表的現代醫療技術在為人類帶來福音的同時,也以前所未有的力量衝擊著傳統的儒家倫理觀念,向傳統的婚姻和家庭關係提出最嚴峻的挑戰。因此,從傳統儒家倫理的視角,理性地審視中國傳統倫理社會的深層本質和家庭婚姻觀念,有助於深化人們對輔助生殖技術倫理問題的認識,促進科學技術與生命倫理的良性互動和協調發展,從而使人類的生殖和繁衍更加科學。Chinese traditional Confucian ethics recognizes the fundamental importance of the family. Appropriate blood-tie relationships have become a major concern in Chinese marriages and family life. As the Confucian ethical tradition has been established for thousands of years, the core values and meanings of Confucian family ethics are implicit in Chinese life and embodied in everyday activities. The family has been taken as a foundation of the state, and family regulation has been taken as an indispensable element in the Confucian societal ideal of “personal cultivation, family regulation, state governance, and the whole world made peaceful.”Assisted reproductive technology (ART) has benefitted Chinese families who have difficulty conceiving naturally. However, it also poses severe challenges to the traditional model of marriage and family relations according to Confucian ethics. The first challenge is that ART causes a separation between reproduction and marriage – gametes from a person outside of the marriage could be used to procreate children, which presents the grave risk of changing the blood-tie-based structure of the family. We must also face the second challenge posed by ART, which is that the application of such technology may inflict harm to the child thus conceived. There have already been Chinese cases involving disputes over who should be considered the legitimate parents of the children conceived through ART. Such cases are enormously controversial and the children are put into quite vulnerable situations.From the perspective of traditional Confucian ethics, Chinese society should be very cautious in applying ART. We should recognize that the problems of infertility involve complicated psychological and social factors that cannot entirely be solved by using advance technology. Moreover, necessary laws and regulations should be formulated according to proper Chinese ethical views that reflect traditional Confucian family ethics. It would be helpful to set up hospital ethics committees to provide consultancy and advice in difficult cases. LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English.近年來得益於女性地位的提升與名人效應,單身女性凍卵問題日趨成為社會輿論關注的焦點,由此也引發了法學界對單身女性生育權的討論。然而,單身女性凍卵不僅僅是一個法律議題,更是一個倫理問題。不僅法律和法規的制定和修訂中多有涉及對倫理的關照,凍卵的臨床實踐中也廣泛存在對倫理的考量。在結婚率和生育率持續走低當下社會,相當一部分單身 女性選擇凍卵的動機是希望脱離婚姻而進行自主的生育行 為。值得深思的是,東亞的儒教國家對輔助生殖的使用限制最為嚴格、政策最為保守。本文試圖通過分析儒家會如何看待脱離婚姻的生育行為,來探討儒學倫理對單身女性凍卵抱有怎麽樣的態度、能夠帶來怎麽的啟示。本文認為,儘管在法律維度上應該肯定單身女性擁有生育權,但在倫理層面上,脱離婚姻的生育行為應該極為審慎,因為其有違儒家倫理中對家庭秩序的看重,同時也讓“雙親撫育”難以得到實現。In recent years, thanks to the promotion of the status of women and the celebrity effect, the issue of the frozen eggs of single women has become a focus of public opinion, leading to discussion of the reproductive rights of single women in the legal arena. However, single women's frozen eggs are also an ethical issue. The laws and regulations not only involve ethics, but also ethical considerations in the clinical practice of frozen eggs. In today's society, in which the marriage rate and fertility rate continue to decline, many single women choose to freeze their eggs to distinguish between reproductive activities and marriage. It is worth thinking about the fact that Confucian East Asia has the strictest restrictions and most conservative policy on the use of assisted reproduction. This paper explores how Confucian ethics have a different position on single women’s frozen eggs by analyzing how Confucianism views fertility behaviors that are separated from marriage. With respect to the bigger family in other dynasties, family in Qin and Han Dynasty is the basic society and economy unit. The kernel family structure in Han Dynasty plays as an important role for the overall development of the Chinese family in terms of bright characteristics and apparent variations. This thesis focus on the family issues in Han Dynasty and thereby investigates with different ways, such as (1) the family model in Han Dynasty, which can be divided into two parts. One is family scale and family structure, and the other is household separation. The typical family scale in Han Dynasty is consisting of five people. The family structure is composed of a couple as a kernel family. That is because the formation of kernel family is rapid which is attributed to the short life of people in Han Dynasty and urgent to execute property separation from their parents who are still alive. Besides, the children have equal right of succession. Regarding to (2) the relationship by marriage in Han Dynasty, people are prefer to marry early in order to increase the labor force and promote the nation economy. Due to the propagation changes on moral regular, the relationship between a couples change from sharing joys and sorrows of life between each other into male chauvinism. However, the public opinion still recognize to remarry even the moral regular is in vogue. For the authority of divorce, wife is not passive anymore. Since, there are a lot of wives voluntarily propose to divorce which are record in the literature. Finally, (3) the development of family education is discussed. The family education of Han Dynasty is based on Confucianism. Parents play an important role in family education. The family values are better than precept which change and influence children unobtrusively and imperceptibly. The family properties to be handed down for generation make descendants have skills to survive. The sincere caution of the family instruction can deeply affect descendants on the judgment of morality and the impression for getting the truth in a dispute. Consequently, the function of family education in Han Dynasty is manifest. The harmonic conjugal relation and well family education lead to a cheerful and happy family, which is the major force to make the society and nation settle down. Therefore, It is the most important factor contributes to both civil and military blossomed in Han Dynasty.

The study on how female original family experiences and the awareness of female marriage Abstract The study aimed to investigate female original family experiences and the awareness of female marriage. Based on depth interviewing, the researcher tried to explore the female experiences in the original family and understand the impacts on female’s atwareness towards marriage. The researcher adapted the interpretative methods to discuss four subjects’ experiences. Together with first hand sources, the collected documentation materials were further processed and came up with five common themes and three specific themes. The findings are as the following: 1. The conflicts of original family relationship form inner struggle and contradictions. 2. The roles of parents in the original family were placed in their marriage. 3. Comprehending the divergence of values between both sides. 4. The original family parents’ conflicting behavior was copied unconsciously. 5. The birth order of female original family affects marital conflicts coping strategies. 6. The memories of the original family affect the expression of love in the marriage relationship. At the end, the researcher suggested that by targeting different subjects, a new research design may thus come about and new findings can be gained. Keywords: original family、marriage awareness

Abstract The purpose of this research were explored marital attitude and marital attitude formation process of people who suffered dual family violence. Four participants who exposed to marital violence and suffered the child/adolescent abused, and after the phenomenology analysis, obtained the findings were as follows: 1. People who suffered the dual family violence, their marital attitude include: (1) Cognitive aspects of marriage as a difficult and challenging with a value, believe that "marital problems with insurmountable", even further "doubt the necessity of marriage". For them, marriage is a gain of function and benefits, they thought that " the marriage is conforms to the life style which the society expectations” , the marriage regards as “a way to the family, and separated from the violence”. (2) Emotional aspects is divided into “yearns for the marriage, and towards the well-being”, “feels the worry and the suspicion facing the marriage”, showing both anticipation and fear the conflict hurt feelings. (3) Behavior aspects are" realize the changing role after marriage"," Save for a rainy day and set the limit".2. Marital Attitude Formation Process of People Who Suffered Dual Family Violence that can be divided into four stages, eight content, in each stage has two content. The first stage is "in deep trouble stage", people experiences " family violence, the more gradually clear" and " isolated at a deadlock", two kinds of situations. The second stage is “the adaptation and adjustment stage of family life”, people begins to develop “the identity to mother, and break the shackles of women "and, “to adjust the vacancy and out of gear of father”, in accordance to the life pressure and difficult position. The third stage is “ shape stage of the viewpoint to the marriage”, the people through the intimate relationships to form" viewpoint of the assimilation and adaptation to the marriage", and" the formation of choice of marriage which place to the social context". The fourth stage is “the action stage”, people used “action” the extension to the marital perception and “live with the injury”, facing the life with the trauma of the past.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations between family stress, social support and marital quality of elementary school students’ parents. A self-reported questionnaire was used and a total of 412 valid samples were retrieved from the students’ parents in ten public elementary schools in Yunlin County. The data was analyzed through SPSS software, and interpreted by means of descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Stepwise Multiple Regression. The findings were as followed. 1.The marital quality of elementary school students’ parents have positive evaluation. 2. The elementary school students’ parents have low levels of family stress. 3. The elementary school students’ parents feel good in social support. 4. The elementary school students’ parents with different gender showed significant differences in marital quality, that is, the males have higher evaluation than the females. 5. There are no significant differences in marital quality of elementary school students’ parents with different age. 6. The elementary school students’ parents with different educational background showed significant differences in marital quality, that is, the higher educated parents have higher evaluation in marital quality. 7. There are no significant differences in marital quality of elementary school students’ parents with different family income. 8. The family stress and social support of elementary school students’ parents can predict the marital quality, that is, couple interaction was the main predictors. According to the results of the research, some suggestions can be proposed to elementary school students’ parents and family education personnel and later researchers.
