Abstract:
Many professionals who have been involved in university English education in Japan have wondered how to foster students’ active engagement with the rest of the world from the classroom. In this paper the author describes a classroom-based project to help students lower their inhibition towards using English and motivate them to improve their English skills through a special focus on connecting to the world in their daily life. Students chose one available foreign snack as representative of a nation, researched the country or the product, and conducted poster presentations to share their findin

Abstract:
Cognitive linguistics has been aimed at revealing the very nature of language for the last several decades. One of the field’s most significant contributions has been the abstraction of the general patterns, or image schemas, underlying grammatical concepts. In this paper, we propose that English grammar-teaching methods adopting image schema theory offer strong benefits for language teaching. As schematic explanations given to learners are more visible and comprehensible than ordinary verbal-based ones, this method offers a clearer and more engaging way to understand the target grammar. Abstract:
In this paper, I reflect on the experience of introducing the topic of drag to Japanese high school EFL 1st- (n = 23) and 3rd-year (n = 86) students through the reality TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race. Each step of the process is explained, from a questionnaire and minilecture on drag culture to the viewing of the show itself. Students’ written responses to the class were analyzed. These indicated that students were able to understand and apply to their own lives complex concepts from the show, especially gender as a social construct, along with the importance of creativity and individuality. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are expanding into various fields of education. Thanks to AR and VR, teachers can bring a whole new dimension to the realm of language education, resulting in enhanced learning and increased motivation and engagement. With smartphones and inexpensive VR headsets, teachers are able to take a step forward in blurring the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds, giving their students immersive learning experiences. However, many ELT practitioners are not familiar with or keen on integrating AR/VR-related learning tools and resources into thei

Abstract:
In this paper we examine the relationship between teachers’ practices and cognitions in teaching grammar. A qualitative analysis of classroom observations and interviews with three experienced Japanese teachers of English highlights both the key features of these teachers’ pedagogies in teaching grammar and the cognitions underpinning their work. Their practices were characterized by detailed teacher-fronted explanations of grammatical forms, metalinguistic explicitness, and the use of the L1. These practices were underpinned by the teachers’ beliefs about the value of grammar, though there wa

Abstract:
Even though grammar teaching plays a central role in most language classrooms, few investigations of teachers’ beliefs and practices in grammar teaching have been conducted. Hence, our understanding of how teachers teach grammar and of the thinking informing their instructional decisions is still underdeveloped. This study was conducted with two language teachers who were teaching at a private English language institute in Hawaii. Using multiple data sources, I investigated how the teachers approach grammar in their classrooms and explored the beliefs behind their instructional decisions. Even

Abstract:
Many recent investigations in second language (L2) motivation are based on possible selves theory and the related L2 motivational self system. Classroom applications of these theories imply encouraging students of English as a foreign language (EFL) to envision themselves using English in the future. Imagining how one might feel in a future situation is known as prospection, as opposed to directing thinking toward the past in retrospection. Following research from experimental social psychology, this paper first describes some of the brain’s functions behind prospecting. Then it identifies fou

Abstract:
The last decade has witnessed increasing attention being paid to the way in which assessment promotes learning in various cultural contexts. Even so, there has been very little scholarly discussion coming from Japan, where it appears that methods of assessment are oriented around high-stakes summative testing. One theoretical model of formative assessment that is gaining traction worldwide is learning-oriented assessment (LOA). Although LOA has been tried and tested in the Hong Kong context for implementation in Confucian heritage cultures, its suitability for Japan has not yet been explored.
