Abstract:
Faced with students who were unable to cope with basic communication in English, a curriculum was devised that focused on repetition and increased contact with a variety of teachers to improve retention and overcome anxiety. Students were asked ten pre-taught questions on a variety of topics, in an interview test conducted by a teacher with whom they were not familiar. When responding in a Likert-type questionnaire at the end of the course, the majority of students felt they were better able to converse in English with World English speakers. Teachers and students were both supportive of the method. Benefits included increased impartiality and standardization.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The last decade has witnessed increasing attention being paid to the way in which assessment promotes learning in various cultural contexts. Even so, there has been very little scholarly discussion coming from Japan, where it appears that methods of assessment are oriented around high-stakes summative testing. One theoretical model of formative assessment that is gaining traction worldwide is learning-oriented assessment (LOA). Although LOA has been tried and tested in the Hong Kong context for implementation in Confucian heritage cultures, its suitability for Japan has not yet been explored. There are three core components of LOA praxis: learning-oriented assessment tasks, developing evaluative expertise, and student engagement with feedback. The aim of the present study is to apply this theoretical model of learning-oriented assessment as a conceptual lens to examine existing research from the Japanese context. By doing so, it is hoped that a firm contextual grounding could be established that would support and guide the practice of learning-oriented assessment in EFL education in Japan.

Abstract:
Student action logging is a very practical way for teachers to understand what their students have actually learned, what they like and do not like, and where to go next. Action logging entails notebooks and forms used to regularly record student feedback, reflections, and evaluations related to the classroom and their learning. In this paper, three teachers who have been using action logging for different periods of time (1, 3, and 30 years) present their differing experiences of how action logs have shaped their teaching. The teacher perspectives in this paper reveal how action logs provide information that supports teaching decisions, enriches communication between teachers and students, and facilitates a habit of reflective practice. Despite some tensions that may surface from its initial implementation, it is argued that action logging can be adapted to a wide range of different contexts to the mutual benefit of teachers and learners.
