It is indubitable that death theme in the western children’s literature is quite important. For several hundred years, death description has constantly appeared in children’s literature and been regarded highly. Death image has been presented as too morbid and painful. Recently, authors’ attitudes have changed and the taboo against death description in children’s literature has been abated. In Taiwan, young adult novels about death are a most single theme. They often emphasize how a sick child tries to get over its sickness. As western works have many death descriptions, I decide to choose some translated works to research. Because the death of family or friend is great event for anyone. Novel themes with death could easy see the metamorphosis of the young protagonists. So the subject of the research link death and initiation. I choose Han-Sheng publishing company’s publicatiopn as my major materials. Because their publishing time came across Taiwan’s upsurge in research with death and life. I divide my thesis into three parts. First, I try to analyze how the works handle and narrate death, and examine the protagonists‘ death concepts and attitudes. Second, I will look into the viewpoints of their manners how to cope with different problems. Finally, I will also investigate how initiation implied in the stories influences protagonists and readers as well. This thesis is made up of five chapters. Chapter One explains the motivations, purposes, methods, limitations of writing this thesis and literature reviews. Chapter Two discusses childhood and death, the initiation’s definiation, death writing history in children literature. In Chapter Three, I try to analyze when death coming,the attitude between adult and young potagonists , and to kill animal is the final goodbye to childhood. In Chapter Four, I will discuss the initiation of death events to protagonists and readers. In the last chapter, I will talk about my findings: some death descriptions in the works are too shallow to fit protagonists’ mental developments while some are full of philosophical meanings and the initiation senses are considerably strong. This study would collect data by participant observation in terms of ethnographic research method. Based mainly on the students view, exploring gender relations from peer interaction. According to Connell’s theory, this research want to analyze authority, production, emotion and symbol. The results of this research are as follow: 1. Between the adolescent boys and girls indeed has the phenomenon which exist the gender segregation. 2. Between the adolescent boys and girls presents authority relations. And young girls also attempts to resist the authority relations. 3. The adolescent boys and girls as if gradually have realized the importance about body autonomy. On the other hand, they also receive the effect of mainstream value, still could realize gender segregation from the outlook appearance. The research provides certain suggestions for teachers, related future researchers concern for gender issues and gender education, according to the results and inspirations of this research.

Adopting Foucauldian theories of discipline and power, this research analyzes “sex-trade” adolescent girls’ living experiences after their placement in the Midway School, one of the State Apparatuses they encountered. Midway School is a placement organization established according to the Child and Youth Sex Trade Prevention Act. This thesis discusses how State Apparatuses, carrying mainstream social values, influenced Midway School’s administration goals and its attitudes toward its students; how adolescent girls of Midway School responded to both visible and invisible disciplines from the school. The issues discussed in this study include: how were adolescent girls placed into Midway School? What did they experience and how did they feel during this process? After they entered Midway School, what mechanism did the school use to administrate students’ school life? How did mainstream values and social expectations work on adolescent girls through the operation of Midway School? How did adolescent girls develop their coping strategies in Midway? This thesis adopts the concept of “State Apparatus” to analyze Midway School’s philosophies on Education and Administration. Foucault’s theories of body discipline and resistance are used as the analytic framework. In order to present adolescent girls’ experiences from multiple sources, data were collected mainly by in-depth interviews, and supported by participatory observations and written materials. The main findings of this research are as follows: In the Midway School, adolescent girls’ bodies are fields where social values and disciplining power battle These girls used their “bodies” in ways that were deemed by mainstream values as “wrong,” they therefore fell into a compulsive reformatory mechanism propelled by the interference and manipulation of State Apparatus. In Midway School, mechanism of disciplining is everywhere. Disciplining power permeates bodies when bodies moved and acted according to time schedules on school timetables. As for space disciplining, the boarding school arrangement as well as the glass-house-like bedrooms all invited omnipresent surveillance. In the subtle interpersonal interaction, “Performing as a good student” is girls’ best coping strategy within the subtleties of human relations. Mistrust among peers and peer surveillance are yet other kinds of discipline mechanism. With all these various kinds of discipline technologies, adolescent girls developed self-monitoring, and the school administration achieved its best goal with the least efforts.

Adolescent Affective World in the Young Adult Fiction ──Exampled with the Prize Works of Chiuko’s Modern Children’s Literature Award Hsu Hsiao-Lin National Taitung University The Graduate Institute of Children’s Literature Abstract These Prize Works describe adolescent life such as adolescent experience of frustration and growth, pursuit of ego and affectivity, reaction with family problem, care of environment ……Under these subject matters, the affectivity between adolescent, friends, and family enrich the content of writing. Therefore, this dissertation puts emphasis on discussing the description of adolescent friendship, love, and parentage in the Prize Works of Chiuko’s Modern Children’s Literature Award. This dissertation divided into six chapters. Chapter One describes the motive, the purpose, arranges the documents, and explains the procedures of conducting this research. Chapter Two discusses Chiuko’s Modern Children’s Literature Award and the prize works. Chapter Three discusses the establishment, the maintenance, and the function of adolescent friendship. Chapter Four discusses the establishment, the development, the result of love. Chapter Five discusses the material needs, the affective needs, and the educational needs that parent afford adolescence. It also discusses the adolescent feedback. Chapter six is conclusion. Adolescent takes passive attitude to acquaint with friends, and expects friends to have respect to him / her. Adolescence focuses on the good looks, the personality, and the ability of the opposite sex. They confirm their love by observation, gaze, touch, and expression. But their expression is affected by their mother’s and teacher’s attitude. A few of them underwent sorrowful one-side love with their teacher. Parent in different family types afford different degree of satisfaction to adolescent material needs, affective needs, and educational needs. Adolescent may react with confidence, avoidance, and conflict to parent. A few of adolescent assume a responsibility of caring about their younger brother or sister. Based on the interview of seven high school teachers, this study is not only to describe the strategy of the administration and teachers when they are facing adolescent pregnancy in high school, but also explore the situation and challenge of assistance work system that help those students to continue their education and protect their education right. In this study, it found out that without the direct information from adolescent pregnancy themselves or recourse from others, it is hard for teachers to cognize the situation directly and also provide medical information, problem definition, and parents’ notification. Besides, it is the way to use home learning program and examination system to continue adolescent pregnancy students’ education. However, with the impact of stereotypes of male as the offender, it is lacking of attention and care to male adolescent pregnancy. Moreover, the attitude of principal and the professional ability of administration team members can influence the function of work division and process directly. The stigmatization of unwed pregnancy affects adolescent pregnancy to continue their education in school and also the impact of The Gender Equity Education Act is not really affected to these cases so far. There are several suggestions for those who assist adolescent pregnancy in high school. Improve their professional ability and also enhance the knowledge of The Gender Equity Education Act. Free the communication between the school and collaboration organizations. Build the territorial assistance network for adolescent Pregnancy to release the pressure of high school teachers.

Ethical Relations in Tsao Wen-Hsuan’s Young Adult Fiction Chen, Yen-Huang National Tai-Tung Teachers’ College The Graduate Institute of Children’s Literature Abstract The thesis aims at exploring the ethical relations in Tsao Wen-Hsuan’s young adult fiction published in Taiwan, including four novels─Goats Do Not Eat Heavenly Grass, Thatched Memories, Red-Roofed Buildings, and Gen Niao (A Boy Named Gen Niao)─ and five collections of short stories─The Delta Region, A Red Gourd, The Small House Buried Under the Snow, Sweet Orange Trees, and The White Fence. The study mainly focuses on Father-Son, Brother-Brother, and Friend-Friend relations in “Five Ethics” (excluding Monarch-Subject and Husband-Wife relations), plus Teacher-Student Relation. After the close reading and analysis of the texts, the researcher generalizes three types of ethical relations in Tsao’s works: i) parent-child relation, ii) teacher-student relation, and iii) sibling and peer relations. The purpose of discussing the interplay between the self and others is to understand Tsao Wen-Hsuan’s insight into human nature and his viewpoints of ethical culture. In this way, it is found that he desires to recover traditional ethics and cultivate future ethnical character. This study aimed to discuss images reflected from the bereaved children whom were the subjects depicted in the best selections of the 1st ~ 20th “CHIU KO Modern Juvenile Literature Award” and analyzed experience these children tuned up their sadness in the face of bereavements, at last, generalized reflections such juvenile fiction in topic of bereavement had on juvenile’s reading a book from a viewpoint of reading therapy. The Study was segmented into a total of six chapters. In Chapter One, that is, Introduction, the study elaborated research motive and purpose to ascertain scope of research, followed by summary of materials as to CHIU KO Modern Juvenile Literature Award, at last, illustrated research method and process. Chapter Two, “Introduction to the topic, “bereavement”, in the CHIU KO Modern Juvenile Literature Award”, which defined scope of juvenile literature and got whole picture of current researches made on the juvenile literature, followed by detailed discussions of this topic with introduction of texts and author’s background. Chapter Three, “Image Analysis of Bereaved Children in CHIU KO Juvenile Literature”, explored and analyzed images of bereaved children from three dimensions, family, behavior and impersonal relationship. Chapter Four, “Bereaved Children, subjects of CHIU KO juvenile literature, Sadness Tune-up Experience”, analyzed these children’s reaction and tune-up history for sadness from Worden’s normal reaction for sadness and causes of bereavement, further explored and analyzed their discovery from self power, interaction with others, family support, art creation, reading guideline and narrative therapy, at last, generalized any positive and negative impacts these bereavements had on the children. Chapter Five, “Reflections CHIU KO Literature’s Topic of Bereavement Have on Juvenile Children”, divided featured implications behind juvenile children literature in the topic of bereavement chosen by CHIU KO into emotion and life, followed by analysis of skills presented from characters and plot, at last, generalized specified impacts the idea of topic slowed juvenile children readers’ fear in the face of death, comforting their sadness by reading, encouraging them to face with difficulties and fear and use sympathy to care for others, and love is power to live. At last, Chapter Six, Conclusion, suggested findings, with expectation to be references for those faculties, teachers who care for bereaved children and authors of juvenile children literature.

The main purpose of this study was to investigate kindergarten, primary and secondary teachers’ opinions about the impact of the low birth rate on schools. The data were collected from 859 teachers in central Taiwan, and were analyzed by descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA with repeated measures, one-way MANOVA, two-way MANOVA as well as qualitative inductive analysis. Following are the findings : 1. Kindergarten, primary and secondary teachers in central Taiwan generally experienced that schools are affected by the low birth rate. 2. Kindergarten, primary and secondary teachers in central Taiwan considered that enrollment and administration of school have been affected the most by the low birth rate. 3. Teachers’ opinions about the low birth rate were affected by school level. 4. Teachers’ opinions about the low birth rate were not affected by their age. 5. There was an interaction effect between teachers’ total seniority and the school level on their opinions about the low birth rate. 6. There was an interaction effect between teachers’ seniority in their current schools and the school level on their opinions about the low birth rate. 7. There was an interaction effect between the school location and the school level on teachers’ opinions about the low birth rate. 8. Teachers had different opinions on whether low birth rate is a risk or a turning point. 9. Teachers have developed strategies to cope with the impact of the low birth rate on schools.

Abstract The purposes of this research are to understand how gender minority students choose their majors before studying in elite classes in high schools, and also to investigate how gender affects their interaction with both teachers and peers. To emphasize on the gender inequality, two target groups are chosen to be studied, one language gifted class with seven male students and another mathematics and science gifted class with four female students. Adopting the qualitative method, this research is carried out through interviews, observations and document analysis. The following results are obtained from this research: 1. Gender minority students enhance their achievement in class and the knowledge value, which is regarded as the basis of choosing a major. 2. Learning experiences of male and female minority students are different as they are influenced by established gender stereotypes. The situation is especially obvious when delegating tasks or distributing powers. 3. To alter traditional gender stereotypes, gender minority students highlight their advantages in classes and pay extra attention to their disadvantages. 4. Class participation of gender minority students is influenced by different interpretations of interaction and by how confident they are. With the above results, this research suggests: 1. Suggestions for the factors influencing gender minority students when choosing a major To abandon gender stereotypes of majors and the idea that mathematics and science major is better than others and to pay attention to students’ interests instead of their achievement. 2. Suggestions for learning environment for gender minority students in an elite class To encourage gender minority students to interact more with teachers and peers. Teachers should not only carefully avoid any language or action related to gender bias but also positively raise the awareness of gender in class. Teachers should concern about the feelings and the needs of gender minority students and ensure students are given the opportunities to express their thoughts. Taught courses are supposed to convey the ideas that majors are neither specifically oriented toward male or female nor one major is better than another.Gender equity education is advised to include in the curriculum in an elite class.
