<strong>Abstract:</strong> Based on the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese (BCCWJ), this paper conducts an in-depth cognitive linguistic analysis of the Japanese lexeme "浅ましい" and its multiple meanings. Utilizing cognitive techniques such as metaphor and metonymy, the study classifies the semantic relationships of "浅ましい" in modern Japanese and reveals its affective tendencies across different contexts. Findings indicate that "浅ましい" predominantly conveys negative emotions, covering a range of meanings from the condemnation of desires and negative evaluations of appearance to the description of humility, sadness, and shame, and it is primarily used in written expression. 要旨 本稿は、日本現代詩を代表する詩人高橋睦郎をとりあげ、初期の作品から今日に至るまでの作品について、樹木のモチーフの変化を分析する。父の早世など、過酷な幼児期は、自叙伝的な家庭史と神話を絡ませた円環形式をもつ詩集『姉の島』(1995) に結晶した。だが、2000年以降は、環境破壊、家族崩壊、テロなどの社会問題など、外の世界へと向かっていく。社会的なテーマは、日本の詩歌では歴史が浅いが、逆説的なレトリックによって、高橋睦郎は多義的で抒情的な思想詩を生み出した。東北地方太平洋沖大震災のあった2011年以降の作品は、核エネルギーの問題、情報化時代を背景とした言語の空洞化を主題として新しい展開を見せている。 AbstractThis paper presents the poetry of Mutsuo Takahashi, one of the most important contemporary Japanese poets. We particularly focus on analysing the tree motif in the poems created since the poets’ early stages to the present day. The collection of poetry Sister’s Islands (1995), inspired by the poet’s childhood, full of tragic events such as his father’s premature death and his mother’s abandonment of him, interweaves autobiographical and mythological elements in a ringlike structure. However, after the year 2000 a new creative phase in his work ensued, wherein the poet deals with the problems facing our world such as ecological issues, disintegration of the family, terrorism, etc. The poems created after the great earthquake in Tohoku in 2011 open up new topics such as the ecological catastrophe caused by nuclear energy, loss of the meaning of words in the contemporary era, when information is exchanged at a lightning speed.

要旨巨細胞性動脈炎（giant cell arteritis: GCA）は，高齢者に好発する大血管炎で，視力予後に関わるため，見逃してはいけない疾患の一つである。症例は85歳の男性。発熱を伴う両下腿の安静時痛を主訴に当院搬送された。両側の下腿腫脹を認めたが，把握痛や浮腫，発赤は認めず，下肢静脈超音波検査でも深部静脈血栓は指摘できなかった。血液検査で高度な炎症所見を認め，下肢の造影CTで両側の大腿動脈から膝窩動脈にかけて，動脈壁肥厚と動脈周囲の脂肪織濃度の上昇を認めた。再度診察したところ，右鎖骨下動脈と左浅大腿動脈に沿った圧痛を認めた。動脈超音波検査で，大腿・膝窩を含む動脈にびまん性壁肥厚を認めたため，GCAと臨床診断した。両下腿の安静時痛が初発症状であるGCAは非典型例ではあったが，動脈の圧痛や，画像検査で血管壁肥厚の有無を確認したことが早期診断の一助となった。

This paper introduces an online application developed to assist with statistical data analysis. While currently limited in scope to t tests, correlation, and regression analysis, the application moves beyond standard implementation of these tests by augmentation with bootstrapped statistics and several exploratory and explanatory graphical plots. Measures of effect size and confidence intervals are also calculated. The application is designed to be easy to use, requiring only input of correctly formatted data for the analyses to be run. After providing a brief introduction and rationale for the application, issues related to quantitative data analysis underpinning its analysis are outlined. Guidance on the functionality of the application is also provided. Finally, some caveats regarding its usage are addressed. Whilst aimed primarily at researchers with limited experience in quantitative data analysis, it is hoped the application may also be useful for a broad range of users. 本論文では、統計データ解析を支援するために開発されたオンラインアプリケーションを紹介する。現在のところ、t検定、相関、回帰分析に限定されているが、ブートストラップや探索的、説明的なグラフプロットで拡張することで、これらの検定の標準的な実装を超えるアプリケーションである。該アプリケーションを用れば、効果量と信頼区間も計算され、使いやすく設計されているために正しくフォーマットされたデータを入力するだけで分析が実行される。本論文では、アプリケーションの簡単な紹介と理論的根拠を示した後、解析の基礎となる定量的データ解析に関する問題を概説する。また、アプリケーションの機能に関するガイダンスと、使用の際の注意事項を提供する。定量データ解析の経験が浅い研究者を主な対象としているが、幅広いユーザーにとって有用なアプリケーションとなることを願っている。

Japanese teachers of English in Japanese higher education are an under-researched, yet a highly influential group of teachers. A yearlong case study with one teacher, a literature specialist who is relatively new at teaching English, was conducted. Through multiple interviews and classroom observations, it was found that the teacher’s beliefs toward language learning and language teaching are deeply rooted in how she successfully learned English and are shaped by her love for literature. The paper concludes with a call for more qualitative and quantitative research investigating the teaching practices and the English pedagogical beliefs of Japanese university English teachers in order to deepen our understanding of English language education in Japan. 日本の高等教育機関における日本人の英語教師の役割は大きいにもかかわらず、これまで十分に研究の対象になって来なかった。文学が専門の比較的経験の浅い1人の教師を対象として1年間、ケーススタディを行った。数回のインタビューおよび教室での観察を通じて、その教師の言語学習・言語教授についての本人の信条が、自分の英語学習における成功体験および文学への愛情に少なからず影響されていることが判明した。本論では、日本における英語教育の理解を深めるためには、大学教師がどのような教育を行っているか、どのような教育上の信念を持っているのかを、質的にも量的にもさらに研究する必要性があると結論づけている。

This study focuses on university students’ perceptions of enjoyment in participating in carefully orchestrated, constructive controversy activities in EFL classrooms. Analysis of student feedback indicated that 81% of participants appreciated the experience. Students valued constructive controversy for its ability to enhance English proficiency, broaden global competence, and increase their language skills. However, challenges arose when students felt their language abilities might lead to misunderstandings or superficial discussions, detracting from their enjoyment. Teacher intervention was crucial in mitigating these concerns, suggesting that supportive guidance could enhance the effectiveness of constructive controversy. The findings underscored the role of teachers in fostering a conducive environment by selecting appropriate discussion topics, establishing frameworks for participation, and considering students’ varying language competencies within heterogeneous groups. This study highlighted the potential of constructive controversy as a pedagogical tool and emphasized the educator’s role in optimizing its benefits in EFL education. 本研究は学生が英語の授業で構造的討論に参加することで楽しさを感じる可能性について探求した。学生の意見を収集しデータを分析した結果、参加者の81%がこの経験を高く評価していることがわかった。評価されたのは、構造的討論が英語力の向上やグローバル力の拡充、言語スキルの上達に寄与する点であった。一方で一部の学生は自身の英語力に不安を感じ、誤解や浅い討論が楽しみを損なうと感じることも明らかになった。研究結果から、構造的討論を実施する際には教師による適切なテーマの選定や参加の枠組みの確立、異なる言語能力を考慮した異質なグループの形成が重要であることが示された。また、教師の介入が活動の成功には不可欠であり、支援的な指導が構造的討論の有効性を最大化する可能性も明らかになった。本研究から、構造的討論は教育の有力な手段として潜在的な可能性を持ち、効果的に実施するためには教師の役割が重要であることが示唆された。
