This study investigates interactional moves of Japanese EFL learners and how they modify their oral output differently depending on whether their interlocutor is a peer or a native speaker (NS). By employing retrospective stimulated recall methodology, this study also explores the participants’ perceptions which arguably determined their interaction patterns during a communicative task. Participants were eight Japanese first-year university students and four NSs of English. Conversations of eight learner-NS dyads and four learner-learner dyads (six hours in total) were audiotaped, transcribed,

According to complex dynamic systems theory (CDST), L2 learning is a nonlinear process in which learners’ language systems are always changing and iterating through interactions with the learning environment (Larsen-Freeman, 2019). Recursive conversations (RCs) are a type of classroom practice that was developed from CDST, providing learners with iterative conversation practice and reflection opportunities (Kindt, 2004). Research published by Bowyer (2019) showed that learners believed that RCs enabled them to achieve increased performance in conversation. This present study is an attempt to e

Abstract:
The present study investigated whether peer and teacher feedback in the process-oriented approach would influence student writing development in an exam-oriented senior high school in Japan over one academic year. Pre- and post-essay tests were administered both to the experimental group and the control group to assess the development of students’ writing skills. Questionnaires and interviews were conducted at the end of each school term in order to examine student attitudes toward feedback. The results indicate that students improved significantly in the quality and fluency of their writing.

A Complex Dynamic Systems Theory approach to studying ILDs rectifies this situation and supports teachers by investigating the interrelated, variable, and situated aspects of ILDs. This view suggests a fractal causality in which art is conceived within a network of human and nonhuman activity. This study builds on preliminary research by Murphey (2003) and Kindt and Bowyer (2018) that explored the effects of recursion on learners’ L2 competence and beliefs but were too broad in scope and worked with limited data.
