ABSTRACT Vector control strategy has been considered as one of the most effective methods in achieving high dynamic performance of induction motor drives. Applying vector control methods to an induction motor can decouple its complicated nonlinear dynamics and hence good speed and torque responses can be acquired. With the maturity of the vector control techniques the induction motor will replace the separately excited DC motor in industrial application for high accuracy. In the implementation of vector-controlled induction motor drives, the electrical parameters of the motor must be exactly known for optimal dynamic performance of the motor. If the motor’s electrical parameters are not estimated precisely, the slip may not be calculated accurately, thus induces coupling between the direct and guadrature axis of rotor fluxes and currents leading to the performance reduction of vector-controlled induction motor drives. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a self-commissioning scheme for vector-controlled induction motor drives. The tunning program is run on a personal computer connected to a control circuit board of a power converter, then a sequence of test signals are injected into the motor drives for estimating the motor’s electrical parameters. Simulation results are presented illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed method.
