An Exploratory Study About The Self-concept of High-functioning Autism Yih-Fen Shieh National Taiwan Normal University Abstract The purpose of this qualitative research was to understand the self-concept of two high-functioning autistic adolescent students (one junior high school student Happy-girl and the other senior high school student Shin-Young). I tried to find out the truth of participants’ self-concept and explore their rich inside world by interviewing them and their significant others. In this study, two high-functioning autisms were asked to talk about themselves in different dimensions, by which we would understand their emotion, motivation, and value, etc. Then I interviewed their family, teachers, and classmates for confirming and collecting more data. Eventually I found out the general self-concept of high-functioning autisms. Based on data, we could obtain the self-concept of high-functioning autism from four aspects. First, two participants had different self-concepts in general. Happy-girl seldom talked about herself, and her emotion and behavior presented simply and directly. Shin-Young gave me lots of information about himself, and his behaviors performed consistently with his inner thought. Second, according to vertical and horizontal structures, Happy-girl’s self-concept maintained at “body image” stage and the sub-domains were independent. And Shin-Young’s was going to “self-identity” stage and the sub-domains were influenced with each other. Third, I tried to find the self-concept of two participants from two contexts. The relationship in family and the opinion of how they labeled the “autism” would influence their self-concept, especially the emotional self-concept. At school, their self-image and peer self-concept were related to their special performance and whether teachers and schoolmates accepted them or not. Finally, we would discuss the development of high-functioning autism’s self-concept. The different cognitive ability between two participants made them develop to different stage, and they were both disturbed by lacking of reflexibility. As autistic characteristics, poor social interaction was a barrier to developing their peer and emotional self-concept. Not only the behavior problems influenced their development of social and emotional self-concept but also the different communicative styles affected their peer self-concept and then increased the difficulty of this study.

This study is to explore the self-concepts of elementary school children with stuttering in terms of academic and non-academic domain, and the impacts of stuttering on their self-concepts. There were 6 participants who had stuttering in 3 different levels of severity. Based on Phenomenological theory, semi-structure interview was employed to collect the data regarding the stuttering children how to describe themselves. Then, all the verbatim were openly coded as concepts which were divided into different concept groups. Besides the related subcategories which were obtained from the concept groups were combined as main categories. The results were found as follows: For the stuttering children in elementary school, (1) because academic performance was their daily focus, that decreased the impact of stuttering on their self-concepts and self-confidences; (2) most of them just like general children who much concern about their fatness than other physical appearances. In addition, their relationships with classmates and teachers mostly were positive but negative with their sisters; (3) the dynamic interaction among stuttering severity, stuttering awareness, communication attitudes, communication anxiety and social experience influenced on their self-concepts. Furthermore, avoidant behaviors were often used to deal with both the moments when stuttering and interpersonal conflict occurred. The reason, however, was unknown. Finally, limitations of the present study and suggestions for worthwhile future research were discussed.

The purpose of this research was to study the current situation in self-concept and prosocial behavior of newly-immigrated children in Chang--hua County and compared the similarity with those of non-immigrants; also to probe into the differences of ages, grades, the correlations and prediction between self-concept and prosocial behavior. The subjects, 67 newly-immigrated children and 112 non-immigrated children, were selected by district stratified sampling in 10 elementary schools in Chang-hua County. The data was collected by filling out self-concept scale and prosocial behavior scale, which were analyzed by descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple regression of inferential statistics. The results indicated that (a) newly-immigrated children were generally good on overall self-concept and other aspects. (b) There’s no significant difference in self-concept between newly-immigrated chldren and non-immigrated children. (c) The self-concept of newly-immigrated children showed difference in gender, but not in grades. (d) The newly-immigrated children were generally good on overall prosocial behavior and other aspects. (e) There’s no significant difference in prosocial behavior bewteen newly-immigrated children and non-immigrated chilren. (f) The prosocial behavior of newly-immigrated children was not differed due to gender and grades. (g) The newly-immigrated children showed moderate positive correlations between self-concept and pro-social behavior. (h) The newly-immigrated children showed good predicative power on prosocial behavior from the “school self” of the variables in self-concept. Based on the above conclusion, concrete suggestions were made to schools, teachers, parents, society and future researchers as reference.

The purpose of the study was to explore the differences and relations among career self-concept, career self-efficacy, and career decision-making difficulties of high-school students in terms of their different backgrounds. We also examined the predictability of career self-concept and career self-efficacy to career decision-making difficulties for high-school students. Participants were 1033 high-school students (482 males and 551 females) from twelve high schools in Taipei. The instruments included Career Self-concept Scale, Career Self-efficacy Scale, and Career Decision-making Difficulties Scale. The obtained data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, one-way MANOVA, canonical correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The results were as follows: 1.The career self-concepts of high-school students varied significantly in terms of gender, grade, major subjects, and state of decision-making, but not the family social economic status. 2.The career self-efficacies of high-school students varied significantly in terms of gender, grade, major subjects, and state of decision-making, but not the family social economic status. 3.The career decision-making difficulties of high-school students varied significantly in terms of gender, grade, major subjects, and state of decision-making, but not the family social economic status. 4.The canonical correlation between career self-concept and career self-efficacy was significant. 5.The canonical correlation between career self-concept and career decision-making difficulties was significance. 6.The canonical correlation between career self-efficacy and career decision-making difficulties, was significance. 7.The predictabilities of career self-concept and self-efficacy on career decision-making difficulties were significant. Among which the occupation of career self-efficacy is the most predictable. Based on the results, suggestions for career guidance and future researches were discussed and proposed.

ABSTRACT The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among self-concept, irrational beliefs and Internet addiction among senior high school students. Questionnaire survey was used as the method of this study. Subjects of 500 senior high school students in Taiwan were selected by convenience sampling. The valid response rate was 96.9%. The instruments applied in this study included “Adolescent Self-concept Scale”, “Chen Internet Addiction Scale”, and “Adolescent Irrational Beliefs Scale”. Data obtained in this study were analyzed by descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation, T-test, and Stepwise multiple regression. We discover a strong relationship among self-concept, irrational beliefs, and Internet addiction. From such a result, some suggestions for teachers, schools, family caregivers and further study were made according to the findings.

The purpose of this study is to understand the self-concept and peer-relationship of Autism Spectrum Disorder high school students in Taipei. A “ Self-Concept and Peer Relationship Questionnaire of High School Students” is used as a research tool. Differences from subjects’ background variables and correlations between subjects’ self-concept and peer-relationship are analyzed and discussed. Major findings of this study are: 1. Autism Spectrum Disorder high school students in Taipei appear to have positive self-concept. 2. Autism Spectrum Disorder high school students in Taipei appear to have positive peer-relationship. 3. ‘Affection toward school’ significantly affects tudents’ emotional self-concept, social self-concept, academic self-concept, global self-concept, friendship, popularity and global peer-relationship. 4. “Family socioeconomic status” significantly affects students’ academic self-concept and global self-concept. 5. “Ways of school entry” significantly affects students’friendship. 6. High correlation between self-concept and peer-relationship is appeared among Autism Spectrum Disorder high school students’ in Taipei.

The main purposes of this study are to explore the self-concept and the interpersonal relationship of the foreign brides’ children and to compare those with the normal students of the elementary schools, then to give teachers and related administrators some suggestions. 82 students in different 69 classes whose mothers came from foreign countries were sampled from the 20 elementary schools located in Taipei County. We also chose 82 local students based on the same Social Economic Status as a comparative group. The subjects were evaluated by Questionnaire of the background information for the elementary school students, Self Concept Scale for the elementary school children and Sociometric Method. The data were analyzed by SPSS for Windows 10.0, Two-way ANOVA, Chi-square test and Pearson product-moment correlation. The results of this study are as follows: 1.There is no significant difference between the children of the foreign mothers and the local mothers on the self-concept and the interpersonal relationship. 2.There is no significant difference among the children of the foreign mothers in different Social Economic Status on the self-concept and the interpersonal relationship. 3.The self-concept and the interpersonal relationship of the foreign brides’ children are significantly related. The findings of this study are recommended for teachers, related guidances and future studies.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the Internet use behavior of Taipei county junior high school students and to examine the relationships among Internet use behavior, peer relationship, and their self-concept. Personal variables such as gender、grade level and family soctoeconomic status are used to study the relationship among Internet use behavior、self-concept and peer relationship There are 1105samples chosen from junior high school students in Taipei county area in the study. Self-made questionnaires are used in this study. The data obtained is analyzed with frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation、 T-test 、one-way ANOVA and pearson product moment correlation. The main findings of this study are as follows: (1)There is a significant difference between junior high school students’ Internet use behavior and their peer relations.(2)There is a significant difference between junior high school students’ Internet use behavior and their self-concept.(3)There is a significant difference between junior high school students’ peer relations and their self-concept . The discussion of this study is based on the results of the study mentioned above, and can be used as a reference for people who would like to study further in this field.

Abstract The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among interpersonal relationship, self-concept, and internet addiction of students in junior high schools in Taiwan recently. First, this study examined the current states of junior high schools students’ interpersonal relationship, self-concept, and internet addiction. Moreover, this study was to analyze the differences of interpersonal relationship, self-concept, and internet addiction of junior high schools students, and further to probe their association. Finally, we wanted to analyze whether the background, interpersonal relationship, and self-concept, having the prediction to internet addiction or not. A survey research was conducted with questionnaires. The subjects totaled 525students for this study were sampled from the junior high schools in Chang- hua City. The set of instruments included the Interpersonal Relationship Scales, the Self-Concept Scales, the Internet Addiction Scales. The descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s product-moment correlation, stepwise multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The findings of the study were summarized as follows: 1. Junior high schools students scored higher points on the whole measurement of interpersonal relationship . 2. Female student’ friend relationship was better than male student’. 3. The ninth grade student’ relationship with family was better than eighth grade student’. 4. Junior high schools students scored higher points on the whole measurement of self-concept . 5. The ninth grade student’ personal self was better than eighth grade student’. 6. The seventh grade student’ family self was better than eighth grade student’. 7. Junior high schools students had a lower tendency toward internet addiction. 8. Male students had more serious internet addiction problems than female students. 9. The eighth grade student’ internet addiction problems of tolerance was serious than ninth grade student’. 10. The worse the tendency toward interpersonal relationship was, the higher the tendency toward internet addiction. 11. The worse the tendency toward self-concept was, the higher the tendency toward internet addiction. 12. Junior high schools students’ using time on internet weekly and personal self and sex and friend relationship and family relationship could be used together to predict internet addiction. Finally, based on the conclusions, some suggestions for the parents, teachers, counseling and further research were proposed.

The main purpose of this study is to understand the status of the self-concept and interpersonal relationship of gifted students in junior high school, as well as the different background variables in self-concept and interpersonal relationship. Then move on to discuss the correlation between self-concept and interpersonal relationship. At last, focus on the predictive power for self-concept to interpersonal relationship. This study is proceeded by means of data analysis and questionnaire investigation. The targets of this study are 342 gifted students in three counties in central Taiwan. The research tools are the self-concept scale and the interpersonal relationship scale. The questionnaire obtained the data from analyzing descriptive statistics, T-test, one-way ANOVA, and other statistical analysis. The conclusions are as follows: 1.Gifted students in junior high school have better degree of self-concept, and the performance of the overall self-concept of girls’ is better than the boys’. 2.Gifted students in junior high school have better degree of interpersonal relationship, and the performance of the overall interpersonal relationship of girls’ is better than the boys’. 3.Gifted students’ self-concept and interpersonal relationship in junior high school are statistically significant. If the students’ self-concept is better, their interpersonal relationship also performs better. 4.Gifted students’ self-concept can effectively predict students’ degree of interpersonal relationship. Finally, based on the conclusion of this study, some suggestions are advanced to the administration, school’s administrative chiefs, parents of gifted students, and future studies.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore the effects on the promotion of children’s self-concept under the scripture-reading education implemented in elementary schools. A collaborative action research was employed to investigate the relationship between the scripture-reading education and children’s self-concept. A class from the 5th grade students in an elementary school was selected as the sample of the study. The data were collected and analyzed by means of interviews, class observation, document analysis, and the pre- and the post-test. The main findings are as follows: 1. According to the investigation of children’s behavior, learning ability, and self-confidence, the scripture-reading education is proved to have positive effects on the self-concept of children. 2. The scripture-reading education seems to have negative effects on the self-concept of children through the analysis of the pre- and post-test of self-attitude questionnaire. Based on the findings, some appropriate explanations and suggestions are provided. Key words: scripture-reading education, self-concept, action research

The Relationship with Overseas Chinese Student’s Self-Concept, Life- Adjustment, and Academic Achievement. Li-Hua Lee Abstract The purpose of this research on investigation is to analyze the relationship with overseas Chinese student’s self-concept, life-adjustment, and academic achievement. The results of research will provide an education authority as references for overseas Chinese student educational policy, instructional material teaching reinforcement, curriculum design, and living guidance. According to the purpose of research, our research has applied literature analysis to discuss with theory of self-concept, life-adjustment, and academic achievement and related research. For example, a questionary method measures overseas Chinese student’s self-concept and life-adjustment problem. Furthermore, from self-concept and life-adjustment, it compares students with different background variables and collections of academic achievement at school that analyze different self-concept , life-adjustment, and academic achievement situation. The objects of our research were 344 students from National Overseas Chinese Experimental High School, and research tools were “Tennessee Self-Concept Scale” (version 2000) and ”Senior High School Student’s Life Experience Measurement”. After questionary feedback and filtration, there are effective 316 copies. Then, all information has dealt as the following processes to discuss with correlation among variables, such as Descriptive Statistics, one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, independent sample for Matched-pair T-test, F-test, Scheffe Rule of Post Hoc Tests, Pearson’s correlation statistics method etc. In summary of the mentioned statements, conclusions of our research hypotheses are as the followings: 1 Overseas Chinese senior high school students who have different background variables, obvious self-concept differences: a. There are obviously differences on item of ”MOR” & “FAM” variables that school girls have greater than boys. b. For the different year of senior high school overseas Chinese students on the items of ” MOR ”, “ACA”, “IDN”, “SAT”, and “TOT”, sophomore year of students have scored more than freshman year of students; furthermore, on the item of “PER”, sophomore and junior year of students have scored greater than freshman year of students. c. On the items “PHY”, “FAM”, “IDN”, and “TOT”, in the different locations overseas Chinese students of the first region (Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Philippines etc.) have scored the second region Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore) of students. d. On the item of “BHV”, students of the first and third region have scored greater than the second region. 2. Overseas Chinese senior high school students who have different background variables, life-adjustment problems that have dramatically differences: a. On the item of “spending”, schoolboys have disturbance greater than girls; sophomore and junior year of students have disturbance greater than freshman year of students. b. On the item of “career prospect”, junior year of students have obsession greater than freshman year of students. c. Schoolboys on the life-adjustment have harassment, for example, first item is “spending”, and the followings are “career prospect” and “school work”. In contrast to schoolgirls on the living accommodation experience in sequence are the first item of “career prospect”, the secondary item of school work” and the third item of “spending”. d. Freshman year of students on the life-adjustment is “school work”; nevertheless, sophomore and junior year of students is “career prospect”. 3. Overseas Chinese senior high school students who have different background variables, obvious differences on academic achievement: 1. On the item of sex: schoolgirls are greater than boys. 2. On the item of grade and subjects: a. Sophomore year of student’s scores on Chinese subject has greater than freshman and junior year of student. b. Freshman year of student’s scores on English subject has greater than sophomore year of student. c. Freshman and junior year of student’s on math subject has greater than sophomore year of student. 4. After grade and location interaction, overseas Chinese senior high school students who have remarkably differences on self-concept and life- adjustment: a. On the item of “PHY”, sophomore year of students in the second region has greater than freshman year of students; freshman year of students in the first region has greater than that of the second region. b. On the item of “ACA”, sophomore year of students in the first region has greater than freshman year of students; sophomore year of students in the first and second region has greater than that of the third region. c. On the item of “interpersonal relationships” sophomore year of students in the first region has greater than that of the second region. 5. Overseas Chinese senior high school students who have highly relationship with self-concept and life- adjustment, and academic achievement: a. Obviously, there are some correlations among “TOT vs. academic achievement”, “ACA vs. academic achievement” and “academic achievement”. b. Nevertheless, there are no correlations among “life-adjustment condition”, “school work subjects” or “total of general life-adjustment ” and “academic achievement”. c. There are no obviously differences on TOT score of life-adjustment between sex and grade. According to the previous suggestions, here are some suggestions on overseas educational policy, student education, and future research approach: I. Suggestions on overseas Chinese educational policy The numbers of overseas Chinese students in different locations have growth or decline situation, especially for students from Hong Kong and Macao. Because political situation between China and Taiwan and cancellation on premium score, the numbers of students have obviously down year after year. Hence, policy change and students returning Taiwan for studying behavior have certain relations. Therefore, it is necessary to modify a suitable overseas educational policy. (1) Authorizing domestic universities to educate qualified teachers for overseas Chinese students (2) Providing straitened overseas Chinese students who have opportunities for part-time jobs (3) Setting up overseas Chinese student’s guardian notarial system (4) Establishing Mandarin centers and compiling connected teaching materials II. Suggestions on overseas school system (1) National Overseas Chinese Experimental High School (2) For other overseas Chinese students who study at senior high school III. Instructional suggestion IV.
