The Narrative Analysis of Intimate Relationship for Masculine Parentification. Abstract This study aims to explore the intimate relationship of men with masculine parentification experience by analyzing the cultural context including, relational self, familism, and Filial piety. The result indicates that the intimate relationship of men with masculine parentification experience features as follows: 1. In choosing their partners, men with masculine parentification experience falls into two types, giver and receiver, and both types share a common desire of being compensated by the intimate relationship for the loss in their childhood. 2. They may act like either parent or child, rather than like a partner, in the intimate relationship. 3. The intimate relationship may be shadowed by the sacrifice and suffering taken in their childhood. 4. Giving as a control mechanism and make the partner be too dependent to leave the relationship. 5. The imbalance between giving and receiving may results in a relationship of one person taking excessive responsibility and the other being not capable of giving and just enjoy the one-way giving. 6. Ask for the return of the partner while giving. 7. Men with masculine parentification experience may not be able to be true to themselves. They may obtain the harmony in the relationship at the expense of ignoring their true feelings. One may conclude at this point that the self-identification of men with masculine parentification experience results in oscillations between spectra of being oneself and of being obedient, in which they struggle to find a balance. The main finding of this study is that men with masculine parentification experience is not never ask for return for their giving as the conventional assumption, on the contrary, they ask for a proper respond from the partner accordingly. In addition, the method of analyzing the cultural context, other than pathological study, is also proposed for prompting application by the present study. The masculine parentification experience has positive and negative effects for the men: they may cultivate empathy in themselves from the experience and be more willing to take care of others; on the other hand, they may also struggle between spectra of being oneself and of being obedient. Finally, discussions and recommendations are made for the future further study and the practical exercise on the parentification experience. That is, the purpose of this study is to unravel the factors, connotations and self-experience in the course of empowerment in such cases. The researcher hopes that through this study the subjective experience of the girl victims can be seen. With the exploration of the victims’ narration, the researcher also hopes that the decision making process can be made clear and understood in a more open-minded way. This study is a qualitative one. From the perspective of gender and culture, the study collects data by in-depth interviews and analyzes the data in a narrative way. There are three subjects taking part in the study-two senior high school students and one junior high school student. The result reveals that a girl’s longing for love inspired by intimacy, passion and commitment has been gradually transformed into a sense of security, a feeling of true love and belonging, and even a need to make love. It is through this intimate relationship that the subjects come to recognize her self-esteem. In the process of exploring their sexual desire, teenage girls become familiar with their own bodies and take a positive attitude toward sex. They embrace the idea of body autonomy and pursue to the initiative of erotic lust. Meanwhile, teenage girls learn to love themselves, make their own decision and take the responsibility for their own behavior. Some girls think positively about themselves while some lose themselves in sexuality. Intimate behaviors of teenage girls are not totally in accordance with the order of the regular twelve steps of intimacy. For instance, some acts like walking hand in hand and hugs do not necessarily occur in a love affair while intimate behaviors may be used as a test on the ambiguous relationship. While making a choice for intimate behaviors, teenage girls consider seriously before having sexual intercourse. Loving each other is essential and a sense of security is of vital importance. They don’t agree that they have to get married or make any commitment if they have sex. This research finds that teenage girls are able to start sexual negotiation in the course of decision making process of intimate behaviors. Also, the practice of sexual intercourse has exposed a female underground to light, highlighting self-supervision and responsibility. The proclaim for gender equality in Taiwanese society comes along with the social changes. The traditional gender paradigm seems to be changed, and the gender role for women also seems to be promoted, including women’s higher achievement in education or professional careers. Nevertheless, hiding behind the new face, the traditional gender ideology still operates, which presents the status of culture lag continuously affects Taiwanese women in their gender role and working career. The goal of this research is to explore life stories of women from different families, and to realize the reason, the significance and the effect of gender role formation. Subjects of this research are women as mothers and daughters in these families. Through analyzing the mother-daughter relationship and the intergenerational differences, the researcher hopes to answer the questions about “how?” and “In what context ?” does the gender role form. On the other hand, through comparing the ideas about gender role between two generations, the researcher also hopes to deconstruct the structure of gender role formation, and to find the possibility for transformation. In this research, six pairs of mothers and daughters have been the subjects. With in-depth interviews, twelve women’s life stories showed the result of this research:under the socio-cultural context of contemporary Taiwan, the restraint for women still works, and the traditional gender paradigm keeps affecting Taiwanese women. However, the research also finds:living at the transitional age between tradition and modernity, experiencing different lives and contexts, have made these mothers develop different gender role perceptions, which affect the daughters, too. In the past, those traditional female value lies on Motherhood, and mothers as the reproducers of gender role within patriarchy mechanism, these negative value judgments actually contains the reverse power to patriarchy mechanism. Because of the changes within the connotation of maternal role, the traditional patriarchal paradigms start to loose, and the female voices are gradually heard, which also give the maternal role and mother-daughter relationship the possibility of reconstruction for gender role formation and its significance.
