At the Walton Centre we conduct a relatively large number of complex and lengthy elective (booked) spinal operations. Recently, we have had a particular problem with half or more of these sessions finishing late, resulting in staff discontent and greater use of on-call staff. These operations require patient monitoring by neurophysiology clinical scientists. Before the surgeon can start the operation, in-theatre neurophysiological measurements are required to establish a baseline. We reasoned that reducing this set-up time would reduce the risk of surgery starting late, and so the whole session

Abstract:
Abstract With the rapid development of urban transportation systems, the occurrence of intersections and parallels between urban railway lines and buried gas pipelines became increasingly prevalent. The severe and periodic DC stray current generated during railway line operations accelerates pipeline corrosion, thereby significantly impacting pipeline safety. A natural gas pipeline in Nanjing, China had long been affected by dynamic DC stray interference currents from the subway (with a maximum DC current density reaching 976 A/m2). The existing DC current drainage system with sacrificial anod

Abstract:
Abstract Triazine-based H2S scavengers are widely used in sweetening sour gas in bubble towers (scrubbers) and contactors due to the attractive combination of low cost, rapid reaction kinetics, and the high capacity for H2S removal. However, triazines are known to form troublesome solids known as dithiazines upon reaction with H2S. These deposits are exceptionally insoluble in typical solvent packages in scavengers and substantial quantities can deposit throughout the system. It has been reported that in the application of monoethanolamine (MEA) triazine scavengers, the severity of dithiazine

Abstract:
Abstract The fatigue life of armor wires in flexible pipes and the shape of generated SN-curves are affected by the corrosion rate, the steel surface condition and the annulus/test environment. An experimental program was performed to develop a test protocol including a pre-fatigue phase where protective corrosion product films are formed and a corrosion fatigue phase where the corrosion rate should be about or less than 0.01 mm/y. This is the maximum expected (industrial standard) corrosion rate under normal operation. To optimize the pre-fatigue phase, a series of corrosion experiments were

Abstract:
Fracture control procedures are presented for new lines and existing lines, and illustrated with examples. Such procedures and the plans based on them address requirements to assure pipelines can tolerate large defects before leaks or ruptures occur, as well as requirements to control the length of a fracture as a secondary level of control. The report is divided into three sections. This first section defines basic terminology, describes how fracture control fits into an operator's overall assurance plan for pipeline integrity and discusses general philosophies of fracture control. Abstract:
A four-step systematic approach was developed for use by storage field operators to plan and implemerit inert base gas projects in the U.S. These steps are site selection, data collection and analysis, engineering analysis, and field implementation plan. An example illustrates the use of this approach. Appendixes include an evaluation of potential field test sites and a discussion of regulatory issues relating to the use of inert gas in underground storage.
