Full textThe notion of time occupies a determining place in Lucretius' work, unifying physics, history, ethics and poetics in a complex and ambivalent vision. Time reveals indeed the deep unity of De rerum natura, which, far from excluding contradictions, finds harmony in the conciliation of opposites. Lucretius never ceased to underline the ambivalence of time because the peculiar status which defines this concept expresses his global project in an obvious and bright way but the lucretian time is mostly epicurean and the Latin poet has discovered, thanks to the Greek philosopher, the concept of infinite time. The main originality of lucretian poetics lies in the latin translation of the Greek aion concept: the endless duration which defines atomic movements becomes permanence and immutability. The poetic genius of Lucretius manages to change the perpetual movement of atomic time into eternal rest. The infinite time becomes eternity, and ataraxia is reached thanks to the contemplation of eternal nature. Thoughts on death - eternal rest - are paradoxically enabling Lucretius to perceive the soothing virtue of eternity. Time, which seemed the main obstacle to serenity, becomes therefore its main auxiliary that synthetic vision is Lucretius' answer to the debate opposing time, happiness and suffering. Through it, he expresses an aesthetic vision of time, which moreover gives a beginning of answer to questions debated during his age. De rerum natura appears mainly as a book about the eternity of time

Full textThe present thesis questions the status of mythological references in the poem upon nature by the roman epicurean poet Lucretius (1st century b. C. ). It intends to examine the assumption that the rational approach to mythical discourse, in as much as this discourse supports the religious system denounced by Lucretius, directs the other "uses" of mythological references in the whole text, and more especially its poetical use or uses. Three aspects of this rational approach are considered in relation to each other : the refutation of figures and occurrences in the mythical story, as set against the criteria of epicurean physics and canon; the explanation of how these came into being as a product of the structures of a mystified collective imagination; the reduction of there meaning in opposition to its significance in the different philosophical hermeneutics of Lucretius'contemporaries, the most prominent of theses being the interpretative methods of the rival stoic school. Finally, an attempt is made to reconstruct the foundations of a specifically epicurean poetics, resulting from the above mentionned analysis of the mythical representations. This study is centered on the inaugural figure of venus as the enigmatic physical, ethical and poetical symbol of Lucretius' poem

Full textThis study aims to demonstrate Lucretius'major role in the introduction of infinity in Rome and within the history of philosophy. Although he bases his argument on the writings of his Greek teacher, Epicurus, the poet offers a new, original, modern and fertile answer to the dialectic of the Whole and infinity when reconciling these two notions by means of his poem in Latin language. Under his stylus, infinity becomes more real, more tangible and obvious, vaster and more intense, more exciting and magnificent. The poetry is not only a charm. It contributes to the good command of the Epicurean infinity and to the promotion of this notion. The approach I adopted for this demonstration, although literary at the root, is interdisciplinary : the study tries to offer a synthetic view of the infinity of Lucretius, a poet, a philosopher and a scientist
