Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: As human society develops, people often face unpleasant affairs in their daily lives. However, when they do not solve matters, they might resort to solving such matters through lawsuits. In the same way, serious problems sometimes appear in the church, so that Christians are forced to rely upon lawsuits. Different opinions can be suggested regarding going to the court to solve problems in Christian communities. Many people use 1 Corinthians 6:1-11 to support that Christians should not have lawsuits against fellow Christians. The question this dissertation investigates is, did Paul really say that Christians should not have lawsuits and should not go to the secular court? In the first century C.E. a situation occurred in the Corinthian community where believers tried to solve trivial matters among themselves in a secular court, rather than within the community (1 Corinthians 6:1-11). In chapter 2, a general understanding of litigation in the first century C.E. is treated in different categories, focusing on the first century Roman society. This chapter sketches the Roman legal context for understanding civil lawsuits that happened in the Corinthian community. Chapter 3 concentrates on the interpretation of 1 Corinthians 6:1-11 as the text in focus in this study, in the light of its historical context. In particular, this chapter investigates various factors pertaining to the nature of lawsuits in Corinth with regard to the historical context. In chapter 4, 1 Corinthians 6:1-11 is examined in a literary analysis and subjected to an exegetical study. These literary devices allow for in depth investigation of the text, and structural and hermeneutical findings regarding Paul’s argument is presented. In chapter 5 the lawsuit is investigated in the light of two theological aspects, namely eschatology and ethics. Paul uses these two important notions to instruct the Corinthian believers regarding their new identity as God’s people and suggest the significant principle how to live as Jesus followers in their lives. In sum, according to 1 Corinthians 6:1-11, Paul argues that lawsuits are not appropriate in the community of the faithful because it is harmful to the unity and the purity of the community. However, Paul’s concern is not for the lawsuits as such, but for how believers should behave and live ethically as Jesus followers before God. Believers as God’s people have to reveal the love of God through their behaviour and in their daily lives.

Abstract:
In 1 Corinthians 11:3-15, Paul writes that if a woman is to be so immodest as to wear her hair uncovered while praying or prophesying in a Christian assembly she might as well shave her head. Paul instructs the Corinthians that it is “one and the same” for a woman to have her head shaved and for her to unveil her hair. There is a large body of works cataloging the modesty standards in Hellenistic Greece but Paul’s reference to head-shaving remains obscure. This thesis looks to find the best explanation of Paul’s instructions. Research in this topic began as an investigation of a popular modern view. It can be found in conversation or a simple Google search, that women in Ancient Greece with their head shaved were prostitutes. Beyond being prostitutes, they were probably temple prostitutes. The evidence does not bear this out as there is no artwork depicting prostitutes, or indeed any women, with their heads shaved. Instead prostitutes are shown in Greek erotic art with both long and short hair, some with and some without head coverings. Literary sources do offer several different examples of women who had their hair cut off. There are examples of women shaving their hair off in Lucian’s The Syrian Goddess, Tacitus’ Germania, Plutarch’s Lycurgus and Roman Questions, several Talmudic sources, and On Fortune II, formerly attributed to Dio Chrysostom. By examining these sources in tandem with 1 Corinthians 11, the most probable impetus behind Paul’s writing relates to punishments for adultery.

Abstract:
What procedure of discursivization makes it possible to present the ensemble of varied narratives recounting “origins,” in the book of Genesis of the biblical literature, as an orderly “cycle”? This question leads to the formulation of the hypothesis that the first story of creation, the “septenary of days,” constitutes, as a paradigm, a system capable of structuring the deployment of the following narratives (Gn 2 – 11). The originality of this system consists, above all, in putting in place mechanisms of orientation toward an instance of enunciation which constitutes a “footprint.” Then, the discursivization of the subsequent texts, by means of the discursive path, employs “formant-signifiers” of the “figural” order, likely to recall this footprint and to function as so many indicators of the instance of enunciation. Finally, at the end of the biblical literature, the “septenary of seals” in the book of Revelation (Apocalypse 5-8) reexposes the paradigm, recapitulates the figural, renews the indication of the instance of enunciation, and redefines the orientation toward this instance. Thus, by means of the figural, discursivization ties a veritable “knot” between figurative values and instance of enunciation. In its figural, the figure becomes a stumbling stone along the path of the reading which orients the reader, leading him as close as possible to the positions of the subjects of the instance of enunciation

Hall, Katharine German. "Response to 1 Timothy 2:11-12 or its parallel, 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 by three sixteenth-century Protestant women theologians: Argula von Grumbach, Marie Dentiére, and Anne Askew." Abstract:
The Protestant women who engaged in theology and biblical scholarship throughout the sixteenth century faced numerous barriers entering into and being heard within their Protestant movements. Because Protestants recognize Scripture as the primary authority on matters of faith, 1 Timothy 2:11-12, along with its parallel in 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, provided a unique impediment to sixteenth-century Protestant women theologians. These women faced the burden of both affirming the authority of Scripture and simultaneously contravening the biblical prohibition against women teaching. Many women theologians of the time; including Argula von Grumbach, Marie Dentiére, and Anne Askew; addressed this issue in their writings. These writings offer a glimpse into how they each wrestled with the question of women’s roles in the religious movements of their times. In this thesis, I argue that von Grumbach, Dentiére, and Askew interpreted 1 Timothy 2:11-12 or its parallel 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 to their audiences in a variety of ways to argue that their involvement in the Reformation was exempted from the Pauline injunction against women teaching or holding authority over men.

Ho, Sin Pan Daniel. ""Cleanse out the Old Leaven, that you may be a New Lump" : a rhetorical analysis of 1 Cor 5-11:1 in light of the social lives of the Corinthians." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/2810/.

Abstract:
This study offers a new interpretation of 1 Cor 5—11:1 from a social identity approach. The goal is to investigate and analyse the inner logic of Paul in these six chapters from the ears of the Corinthian correspondence. It takes into account the Jewish tradition inherited from Paul and daily social lives of the audience. Through the analysis of the literary structure of 1 Cor 5-11:1, research on social implications of Satanic language in ancient Jewish literature, rhetorical analysis of intertextual echoes of Scripture and Christ language in 1 Cor 5-11:1 in light of the social values prevalent in the urban city of Roman Corinth, it is argued that Paul has consistently indoctrinated new values for the audience to uphold which are against the main stream of social values in the surrounding society throughout 1 Cor 5-11:1. Paul does not engage in issues of internal schism per se, but rather in the distinctive values insiders should uphold so as to be recognisable by outsiders in their everyday social lives. While church is neither a sectarian nor an accommodating community, it should maintain constant social contact with the outsiders so as to bring the gospel of Christ to them. In addition, the social lives of the insiders should live out some radical values that could challenge the existing shared social values prevalent in the urban city Corinth. Those new values are mainly based on Scripture, ancient Jewish literature and the implications of the new social identity of the church defined by Jesus Christ. As a result, the logical flow, unitary design and coherence of 1 Cor 5—11:1 become more apparent.

Abstract:

The translation of הֶבֶל (hebel) with vanitas has had a profound influence in the history of exegesis of the book of Qoheleth often characterized as the most pessimistic, skeptical, and nihilistic book in the Hebrew Bible, having as author a despondent man. This dissertation provides a corrective to the “vanity”, “meaningless”, “absurd” or negative reading of הֶבֶל in Qoheleth, by arguing that הֶבֶל has a positive value, as it expresses not the absurdity or the meaningless of life, but its fleetingness/transitoriness/brevity, whose meaning is disclosed in the opening and closing poems (1:2-11 and 12:1-8). This dissertation thus argues that the הֲבֵל הֲבָלִים הַכֹּל הָבֶל which introduces and concludes the book of Qoheleth (1:2; 12:8) is an appeal to contemplate the order, the beauty of the cosmos, through the regularity, recurrence, and cyclicality of natural phenomena. It also calls attention to the fleetingness of human experience in the world, which Qoheleth highlights in the opening and closing poems but also by the use of transient markers: יְמֵי־חַיֵּי הֶבְלוֹ ,(7:15) בִּימֵי הֶבְלִי ,(9:9), כָּל־יְמֵי חַיֵּי הֶבְלֶךָ ,(11:8) יְמֵי הַחֹשֶׁךְ (11:8) יְמֵי בְּחוּרוֹת (11:10) הַיַּלְדוּת וְהַשַּׁחֲרוּת הָבֶל (6:12), as well as אַחֲרָיו ,צֵּל and מִסְפַּר. The shortness of life and the limited duration of human achievements do not empty human life of its true meaning and value. Rather, they tell of the very nature of humans and their actions. The hebelness is from God who made things as fleeting, temporary, transient compared to his own eternity. By using the term הֶבֶל, and by introducing and concluding his book with “nature” poems, Qoheleth reminds the readers of their transience in this world with its pressing and tragic problems, as well as comforting them with the fact that evil itself is temporary in its impacts on life. They will pass away. Hence, Qoheleth’s opening and closing statement: הֲבֵל הֲבָלִים הַכֹּל הָבֶל (1:2; 12:8)

Newton, Derek. "Food offered to idols in 1 Corinthians 8-10 : a study of conflicting viewpoints in the setting of religious pluralism in Corinth." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1996. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14825/.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the conflict which existed in Corinth around the mid-first century C.E concerning Christian involvement in cultic meals. Following a brief introduction, the state of scholarship is surveyed in Chapter 1 and it becomes apparent that the general emphasis has been either on detailed exegesis of Paul's teaching in 1 Cor.8-10 or on Greek/Oriental cultic meal evidence from Classical and Hellenistic times. Little attention has been paid to the actual nature and dynamics of the sacrificial food issue itself or to the Corinthians' own perceptions of such cultic events. Chapter Two deals with a contemporary case study of cultic meals among the Torajanese people of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Using literary evidence and detailed oral interviews, it emerges that among Christians, there exists a wide range of individual viewpoints regarding the nature and perceived significance of images, sacrifices and communal meals. This spectrum of opinion finds its root in the existence of genuine ambiguities, boundary definition problems and conceptual differences regarding the nature of divinity and humanity. The result has been the emergence of a large number of different perspectives on the validity of Christian attendance at, and participation in, such cultic festivals. In Chapter Three, archaeological evidence and reports are assessed in order to suggest which cults were operative in mid first century C.E. Corinth and which might therefore have been the objects of Paul's attention in I Cor.8-10. The unresolved issue of Greek/Roman continuity is considered. Chapter Four and Five present detailed primary source materials concerning images, sacrifices and communal meals, with emphasis on the cults of Demeter/Kore, Asclepius, Isis/Sarapis, cults of the dead and with special attention being given to Imperial Cult. Study of cultic terminology, cultic practice and the perceived significance of cultic phenomena yields evidence of ambiguities, boundary delimitation issues and conceptual variations regarding the natures of the divine and the human. Finally in Chapter Six, detailed exegesis of sections of 1 Cor. 8-10 takes account of this Greco-Roman background research. The unity of 1 Cor.8-10 is defended, but the long-held hypotheses of Gnosticism and Sacramental Communion are criticized. The issue of sacrificial food was complicated and triggered a broad range of genuine individual perspectives. Confronted by such a complex dilemma, involving valid viewpoints on all sides, the apostle deals firmly with the issue of eating in 8: 1-13 but sets his clearest boundary marker in 10: 14-22 where he forbids involvement by believers in actual pagan sacrificial acts. These two sections of the text are thus in basic harmony, and are not in conflict. The plethora of feasible individual interpretations and viewpoints compels Paul to dwell continuously on general principles which are designed to lead his readers away from entrenched individual positions and towards concern for the Christian community. The complex dynamic of sacrificial food, and the consequent controversy involved in trying to define 'idolatry', makes it an ongoing, and largely intractable, problem for many churches today.

Abstract:
Granuloma is a lesion characterized by a compact aggregate of mature phagocytes arising in response to a persistent stimulus. By driving uncontrolled innate immunity and tissue remodelling, IL-1 family pro-inflammatory mediators govern the pathophysiology of paracoccidioidomycosis, a granulomatous lung disorders caused by Paracocccidioides brasiliensis. A major inflammatory pathway involved in IL-1?, IL-18 e IL-1? secretion is the activation of inflammasomes, large multimolecular complexes best known for their ability to control activation of the proteolytic enzyme caspase-1. In this study we addressed the mechanisms that underlie canonical and non-canonical inflammasome pathways, assessing the functional importance of caspase-1, caspase-11 and caspase-8 in the regulation of inflammasome-mediated host resistance during P. brasiliensis infection. We found that IFN-?-mediated protective immune response following by caspase-1- dependent IL-18 release after is the key mechanism responsible for the fungal control after P. brasiliensis-induced cell damage recognition by NLRP3 canonical inflammasome pathway. Nonetheless, despite the important role of caspase-1 in the IL-1? maturation, the lack of caspase-1 only partially reduced IL-1? levels during P. brasiliensis infection. Unlike caspase-1, caspase-11 deficiency did not impair IL-1? production, cytokine strictly secreted by canonical caspase-1 inflammasome pathway. Instead, P. brasiliensis-triggered caspase-11 activation in an ill-defined manner leads to a rapid pore-mediated cell lysis and is required for IL-1? production during P. brasiliensis infection. IL-1?, in turn, is important for promoting the restriction of fungal growth trough IL-17-based inflammation. Finally, the caspase-8 induction by dectin-1/Syk signaling besides playing a role in mediating the caspase-1/11-independent IL-1? maturation is also required to efficient canonical caspase-1 inflammasome pathway, demonstrating a connected network between non-canonical caspase-8 and canonical caspase-1 inflammasome pathways to coordinate IL-1?. Taken together, our results revealed distincts contributions of both canonical and non-canonical inflammasome pathways in IL-1 family cytokine production and emphasizes the versatility of this platform to recruit several effector proteins to tailor the antifungal immune response, sheding new light on the complexity of this hostpathogen interaction.

Mqala, Lieberman Mxolisi. "An assessment of African Christian beliefs in ancestors in view of a responsible interpretation of 1 Corinthians 8:4-6 within the South African context." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/49744.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2003
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The object of this study is to assess African Christian beliefs in ancestors in lieu of a responsible interpretation of 1 Corinthians 8 :4 - 6. Warranting this assessment is the confusion that arises from the perception that African beliefs in ancestors and the tenets of Christian faith are compatible. Scriptural teaching seems to address the question of "ancestral worship" and does seem to portray it as something mutually exclusive to the tenets of Christian faith. Some of the authors cited in the thesis attest to this, and others seem to be rising in defence of "ancestor worship" by accommodating it without any problem on the same level as Christianity. Syncretism arises in the desire to strike a compromise between the two religions and allow African Christians to practise "ancestor worship" whilst confessing to be Christians at the same time. The selected text, ] Corinthians 8: 4-6, will be the centre of the assessment into the practice of "ancestor worship" by African Christians. This is because it contains a passage where Paul addresses the issue of food dedicated to idols. Paul's resolution of the issue - with his intention of maintaining harmony in the church and in the spirit of love - seems to accommodate the eating of meats offered to idols, but encourages abstinence in consideration of the weak. This principle of love may seem to bring accommodation, yet after a rigorous discussion the thesis concludes that the text still excludes the worship of idols. "Ancestor worship" is in this thesis seen to be within the given definitions of idolatry as it involves the sacrificing of meats and foods to ancestors and the deceased. In the final analysis the quest for a solution to ancestor beliefs and practices by African Christians challenges the Church to focus on a responsible interpretation of Biblical texts, and in such a way that it would bring light as to whether ancestor beliefs and practices are in continuation with Biblical perspectives or not.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to further the scholarly debate about the relationship between powers of evil and idols in 1 Corinthians 8:4-5 and 10:18-22 by proposing the “co-optative view” in which evil powers can be seen as “co-opting” sacrifices intended for idols. In I Cor 8:4-5; 10:18-22 evil powers are personal supernatural evil beings.  The daimonia in 10:20f may possibly be classified under the rubric of the principalities and powers, the angels of the nations, and the spirits of the dead giants.  For Paul, idols are the lifeless and spiritually unreal cult images of the pagan gods and, in some cases, the non-existent pagan gods themselves. The relationship between daimonia and idols can be considered under the “co-optative view”, which has three interlocking aspects. First, the daimonia are powerful and enslave humanity into idolatry. By doing the will of the daimonia, idolaters serve them.  Secondly, the daimonia deceive humanity into sacrifices to idols. The daimonia inspire idolatry, and possibly change their forms in to the pagan gods. Thirdly, the daimonia stand or hide behind the idols, receive and co-opt the sacrifices consciously intended for the idols. The recognition and invocation of an idol brings the worshipper under the sphere of influence of daimonia because the daimonia divert the invocation or prayer intended for the idol.  Therefore, Paul’s views that daimonia are personal supernatural evil beings, the spiritual lifelessness of idols, and the relationship between daimonia and idols stands, are continuous with some views attested in early Judaism (as seen in Deut 32; I Enoch, Jubilees and Revelation).  Where Paul does redefine his heritage is in seeing the holy opponent of the daimonia and idols as being Christ “the Lord” and in exhorting the Church to express exclusive loyalty to Christ.

Abstract:
HLB is currently considered the main disease affecting citrus plants. Given this factor, research for cultivars resistant to this disease is needed. Genetic transformation via Agrobacterium with the use of model plants has been an alternative for checking the gene function in response to pathogens, because these model plants have as characteristic a short life cycle and high power of regeneration. Therefore, the aim of this work was to produce transgenic plants, via Agrobacterium tumefaciens, of Micro-Tom tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), and sweet orange, with the genes encoding the PR-8 and CDR-1 proteins isolated from Citrus sinensis. The cotyledons from in vitro germinated Micro-Tom tomato seeds were used as explants source for genetic transformation experiments with PR-8 and CDR-1 genes. These explants were subcultured until the appearance of regenerating shoots and after transgenic plants, which were acclimatized and taken to a greenhouse. The transgenic plants were confirmed by PCR and the number of gene insertions by Southern blot. The plants were grown until T1 generation was obtained. Simultaneously genetic transformation experiments were performed with epicotyl segments from \'Hamlin\' sweet orange seeds germinated in vitro with CDR-1 gene in order to obtain transgenic plants and their characterization. Simultaneously, the standard curve construction was performed by qPCR analysis for identification of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato. Thirteen transgenic plants of Micro-Tom tomato with PR-8 gene and three with CDR-1 gene were obtained. The transformation efficiencies were around 0,38 to 1,98%. Three transgenic plants of Micro-Tom tomato with PR-8 gene were characterized by southern blot, and the number of inserts ranged from 1 to 3. Nineteen transgenic \'Hamlin\' sweet orange plants with CDR-1 gene were obtained through genetic transformation experiments, and the transformation efficiency was 2,06 to 5,96%. One plant was characterized, by Southern blot and has one DNA copy number in the plant genome.

Abstract:
The essay draws on Angela Standhartingers article ”Frauen in Mahlgemeinschaften. Diskurs und Wirklichkeit einer antiken, frühjüdischen und frühchristlichen Mahlpraxis” which examines the representation of women in the ancient tradition of symposia. This thesis studies how Luke and Paul represent women at The Last Supper τὸ πάσχα and the Lord’s Supper κυριακὸν δεῖπνον, and therefore focusses on the pericopes Luke 22:7-30 as well as 1 Cor. 11. Even though these biblical texts are written by men from an androcentric perspective, they show spaces - gaps which are opposed to what the texts seem to convey. Thus, it is possible to break through the patriarchal discourse to render women visible in the texts.   I argue that Luke and Paul represent women in their roles and positions both out of their personal experiences and social ideology. Yet, reflecting on a Christan social order, there can be noticed an earthly approach, relating to the cultural order, in Luke 22:7-30 in distinction from a cosmic approach in 1 Cor. 11.

Abstract:
Fossil fuel and advanced industrialization techniques contribute to global warming through emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO2. In order to mitigate climate change, there is a desperate need to reduce CO2 emissions from different sources. CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) play an important role in these reductions. Naturally occurring enzymes, e.g., carbonic anhydrase (CA), can catalyze these reactions in living systems. Much effort has been focused on complexes of zinc with ligands such as teta, cyclen and tripodal ligands including BIMA and Trispyrazolylborates. These complexes have many interesting CO2 capture properties, but maintain toxic perchlorate ions. We desired to replace them with less hazardous counteranions like BF4- or PF6-. Our research focused mainly on the synthesis and characterization of Zn, Co and Cu cyclen and teta complexes that could mimic CA. We also examined some of these species for catalytic CO2 hydration behavior on wetted-wall column (WWC) at Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER). We successfully synthesized and characterized eight new complexes. These catalysts as CO2 capture systems are more stable have low molecular weights (compared to CA) and more cost effective than enzymes. In terms of catalytic activity significant results were obtained only for few of the catalysts

Abstract:
Part I. Reduction of the 1-methylpentacyclo [5.4.0.0²,⁶.0³,¹⁰,0⁵,⁹]undecane-8, 11-dione (9) with solid NaBH₄ resulted in highly stereoselective reduction of both C=O groups in the substrate, thereby affording the corresponding endo-8, endo-11-diol (11a). The configuration of 11a was established unequivocally by converting 11a into the corresponding cyclic thiocarbonate ester, 12. Part II. Z-1,2-Di(1'-adamantyl)ethene (14) was synthesized with a high degree of stereoselectively in four steps (Scheme 9 in Chapter 2). E-1,2-di(1'-adamantyl)ethene (15) was synthesized by iodine promoted isomerization of 14. Both structures were established unequivocally via single-crystal X-ray structural analysis. E-1-(exo-8'-Pentacyclo[5.4.0.0²,⁶.0³,¹⁰,0⁵,⁹]undecyl)-2-phenylethylene (16a) was synthesized, and its structure was established via analysis of its 1H, 13C, and 2D COSY NMR spectra. Part III. Reactions of electrophiles, i.e.,:CCl_2, PhSCl, and Br_2, to Z- and E-1,2-di(1'-adamantyl)ethenes (14 and 15, respectively) are described (Scheme 5, 8, 10, and 13 in Chapter 3). Structures of the corresponding products were established unequivocally via analysis of their respective one- and two-dimensional NMR spectra and/or single-crystal X-ray structural analysis. Part IV. An improved asymmetric synthesis of optically active (S)-4-hydroxy-2-cyclohexenone 1 (64%ee, determined via Mosher's method) has been developed (Scheme 5 in Chapter 4). The key step in this synthesis involves the baker's yeast reduction of 13. The absolute configuration of the major product, (S)-1, was established unequivocally via single-crystal X-ray structural analysis of a precursor. The optical purity of the major product 14a (80%de, 67%ee) was established via careful integration of relevant gated-decoupled 13C NMR spectra.

Chamberlain, Peter. "Moaning like a dove : Isaiah's dove texts as the background to the dove in Mark 1:10." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/7916.

Full text
Abstract:
There is no consensus regarding the interpretation of the "Spirit like a dove" comparison in Jesus' baptism (Mk 1:10). Although scholars have proposed at least fifty different interpretations of the dove comparison, no study appears to have considered Isaiah's three dove texts as the background for the Markan dove (cf. Is 38:14; 59:11; 60:8). This neglect is surprising considering the abundance of Isaianic allusions in Mark's Prologue (Mk 1:1-15), and the growing awareness that Isaiah is the hermeneutical key for both the Markan Prologue and Jesus' baptism within it. Indeed, Mark connects the dove image inseparably to the Spirit's "descent" from heaven, which alludes to Yahweh's descent in a New Exodus deliverance in Isaiah 63:19 [MT]. Furthermore, each Isaianic dove text uses the same simile, "like a dove" or "like doves," which appears in Mark 1:10, and shares the theme of lament and restoration which fits the context of Mark's baptism account. This study therefore argues that the dove image in Mark 1:10 is a symbol which evokes metonymically Isaiah's three dove texts. So the Spirit is "like a dove" not because any quality of the Spirit resembles that of a dove, but because the dove recalls the Isaianic theme of lament and restoration associated with doves in this Scriptural tradition. After discussing the Markan dove in terms of simile, symbol, and metonymy, the study examines the Isaianic dove texts in the MT and LXX and argues that they form a single motif. Next, later Jewish references to the Isaianic dove texts are considered, while an Appendix examines further dove references in Jewish and Greco-Roman literature. Finally, the study argues that the Markan dove coheres in function with the Isaianic dove motif and symbolizes the Spirit's effect upon and through Jesus by evoking metonymically the Isaianic dove texts.

John, Helen Catherine. "Bodies, spirits, and the living landscape : interpreting the Bible in Owamboland, Namibia." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/21589.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the relationship between Christianity and autochthonous (indigenous, pre-Christian) worldviews and practices amongst the Aandonga of Owamboland, Northern Namibia. Using participant contributions from a series of Contextual Bible Study (CBS) sessions (with groups of men, women, and children), and supplemented by ethnographic contextualisation, it challenges the oft-contended notion that Christian worldviews and practices have erased the significance of African Traditional Religion for Ndonga (or wider Owambo) communities. The enduring significance of autochthonous worldviews and practices is explored using responses to six biblical texts, each of which relates to at least one of three themes: bodies, spirits, and landscapes. The study examines feasting bodies (The Parable of the Wedding Banquet), bleeding bodies (The Haemorrhaging Woman), and possessed bodies (Legion). It considers possession spirits (Legion), natural spirits (the so-called ‘Nature Miracles’), and ancestor spirits (Resurrection appearances). Perspectives on landscapes are highlighted particularly in relation to aspects of the natural environment (the ‘Nature Miracles’) and the locations explored by an itinerant demoniac (Legion). Responses to the texts engender, inter alia, discussions of contemporary perspectives on diviner-healers (oonganga), witchcraft (uulodhi), the homestead (egumbo), burial grounds (omayendo, oompampa), spirits (iiluli, oompwidhuli), ancestors (aathithi), material agency (for example, apotropaic amulets), and the ‘traditional’ wedding (ohango). Having analysed the ways in which autochthonous worldviews informed participants’ interpretations of the particular texts considered (Matthew 22:1-14 & Luke 14:7-11; Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:26-39; Mark 4:35-41 & 6:45-52; Luke 24), each set of interpretations is brought into conversation with professional biblical scholarship. The study therefore highlights the ways in which these grassroots, ‘contextual’ interpretations might nuance New Testament interpretations returned by the Academy, particularly by highlighting the highly contextual nature of the latter.

Mwaniki, Lydia Muthoni. "God's image or man's glory? : a Kenyan postcolonial feminist reading of 1 Corinthians 11:1-16." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/3043.

Full text
Abstract:
This study uses a postcolonial feminist analysis to show how a biblical text (1 Cor 11:1-16), because of its patriarchal and imperial background, excludes women from the image of God. It demonstrates how this text has been taken up, developed and appropriated to support the subordination of women throughout the Christian tradition from the Church Fathers to the reformers and right up to the present day postcolonial Kenyan Church context. While this text has been used for a long time to oppress women, this study argues that a critical reading of the text from a postcolonial feminist perspective shows that gender disparity exists in this and in other gender-biased Pauline and post-Pauline texts because they were based on the existing patriarchal and imperial structures, which subordinated women to men. Further the study demonstrates that the texts have continued to subordinate women to men throughout the history of Christian tradition. Most churches, such as the Anglican Church, express belief in the Scriptures. Yet such churches like the Anglican Church of Kenya, which seemingly supports gender equality through its gender inclusive article in its Constitution, does not offer guidance about how such texts are to be read and appropriated by Christians. The study offers a method to fill this gap. It is hoped that the academy and the church will avail themselves of this method in their reading practices of the Bible. It takes into account the history of gender and imperial biases in the construction of texts such as 1 Cor 11:1-16 that exclude women from the image of God.

Abstract:
This thesis sets out to proof that Paul advised the Corinthians, at least prominently, from a Christ-centred koinwniva frame of mind when addressing their issues in 1 Corinthians. Firstly it has been established that the koinwniva word group may be defined within the nuances of a dynamic relationship. Secondly the study has compiled, with this definition in mind, at least 47 of the most prominent koinwniva elements as found throughout the Bible, with special focus on the New Testament. These elements have then been organised in a koinwniva defined theological framework so that it could be easily accessible for further study into the way Paul might have used them later on in 1 Corinthians. The study then continued not only to point out the important role of 1 Cor 1:1-9 in the Corinthian letter, but also to show how the themes still to be addressed are actually being set in a koinwniva frame of mind. Furthermore, the role of 1:9, as nexus, combined with the specific reference to koinwniva with Christ has also been stressed. In doing so Paul actually supply us with what could be called a “key” to unlock other koinwniva elements in the rest of 1 Corinthians without encountering the koinwniva term as such. So, armed with this “key” and our carefully defined koinwniva theological framework, 1 Cor 5-6 and 8:1-11:1 have been selected as test cases in proving the hypothesis as true. After the issues that Paul encountered in these chapters have been clarified and his responses exegetically laid out, it has been shown in every textual unit, within the designated macro units, that Paul most definitely put koinwniva with Christ in the focus of each suggested solution. Through this “key” other relevant referrals were then made to one or more of the 47 koinwniva elements from the previously compiled koinwniva theological framework. Realising that the koinwniva dynamics featured consistently behind Paul’s suggestions to the Corinthians, led to the conclusion that Paul extensively tapped into a Christ-centred koinwniva dynamic as a prominent frame of mind to address some of the key issues featuring in 1 Corinthians.

Abstract:
This Master’s thesis deals with the creed found in 1 Corinthians 15:1-11: its origin, literary and historical contexts in I Corinthians as well as the theology and historical significance of its parts. It is focused primarily on identifying the boundaries of the creed in the pericope. A form criticism analysis leads to an argument for a long version of the creed which includes verses 3b-7 (but excluding v. 6b). Secondly, the question of Paul’s use of tradition is addressed as well as its contextualization in I Corinthians 15. On the one hand, it is argued that Paul received the creed from the Apostle Peter and James, the brother of Jesus, in Jerusalem around the year AD 36, and that the creed had been formed before that time. On the other hand, Paul uses it in 1 Corinthians 15 to oppose a Greek perspective on life after death, which viewed physical resurrection as absurd. In this perspective, resurrection meant a return to a body identical to the present body, which is mortal/corruptible and characterized by vice/sin. Thirdly, the creed is systematically analyzed on both the theological and historical levels. On the theological level, it will be demonstrated that the mystical union of Christians with Christ is presupposed and that the notion probably goes back to the tradition present in 1 Corinthians 11:23-25. Furthermore, Isaiah 53, Hosea 6:2 and Genesis 22:4 are presented as the primary texts used to develop this ancient tradition. Finally, it is argued that three founding events, namely, the death, the burial and the appearances of Christ, are to be considered historical. The author does not take a position on the historicity of the resurrection, considering that it is an explanatory fact and not an observed fact. This question would require another methodology which goes beyond the scope of this thesis.

"Selected socio-cultural issues in 1 Corinthians 5 to 11 applied to pastors of the Church of the Nazarene in Gauteng." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/223.

Full text
Abstract:
The researcher started the study with the premise that Theological Docetism which is defined as the tendency to theologise or spiritualise apparent social issues without due regard for other possible factors (Hawthorne & Martin 1993: 893), is widespread among pastors. This hypothesis, based on intuition and observation rather than on science, required investigation and the researcher set about doing so with the aim of showing how some social and cultural practices of the first century influenced the issues in the church at Corinth and then to do a parallel study on the way issues are dealt with by pastors in the Church of the Nazarene in Gauteng in particular. The purpose of the study is to create awareness of the practice of Theological Docetism among pastors in the Church of the Nazarene and to encourage a change in attitude and conduct with regard to dealing with church related problems. Selected issues in 1 Corinthians chapters 5 to 11 were used as reference for possible socio-cultural influence. A literary review of the work of notable scholars in the field of the socio-cultural and historical background of the New Testament such as Wayne Meeks, Victor Furnish, Bruce Malina, Abraham Malherbe, and others, was done to determine their findings on what influenced the issues in the church at Corinth. The issues under scrutiny in the church at Corinth were incidences of immorality and 5 lawsuits, questions concerning marriage, the apparent abuse of Christian freedom, uncertainty about whether to consume meat offered to idols, the conduct of some women during worship and the sharing of food at the love feast. Based on the literary review, a socio-historical summary revealed that the congregation’s understanding of their “newness in Christ” (2 Corinthians 5: 14 – 20) was compounded or seriously influenced by their socio-cultural environment. For instance, the researcher focused attention on the issues of lawsuits, the immoral man, food sacrificed to idols and the factions at the love feast and found that the way the members of the Corinthian congregation thought and acted was habitual because they had learnt to do so from others before them (Nolan 1995: 73). The immoral man (1 Corinthians 5: 1 – 13) was tolerated by the congregation because he was a patron to some of them and the rest were afraid to offend him because of the social ramifications inherent in patron – client relationships. The love of honour (Neyrey 1998: 15 – 34) fuelled the dispute between the Christian brothers (1 Corinthians 6: 1 – 11) because public attestation and consent to claims of honour was best obtained in courts of law. Class, status and honour contributed significantly to the issue surrounding the eating of meat sacrificed to idols (1 Corinthians 8: 1 – 13) while class distinctions was at the root of the problems experienced at the love feast or common meal (1 Corinthians 11: 17 – 34). It is the researcher’s conclusion that the issues or problems at Corinth did not have purely spiritual origins and that this needs to be taken into account when the text is interpreted by modern readers. 6 The parallel study relating to Theological Docetism in the Church of the Nazarene in Gauteng was done by means of a survey in which a questionnaire containing both open-ended and closed-ended questions was used as the primary tool for collecting data. There are rules that govern the design and use of questionnaires and the researcher was careful to follow these very closely. The research process for this section was done in three stages. The first stage involved the identification of the intended respondents and the construction of the survey questionnaire. The intended respondents were pastors of the Church of the Nazarene in Gauteng who are presently involved in pastoring churches on the District. The questionnaire was carefully and objectively designed for gathering data surrounding demographics, Scriptural information and church information. Since data in descriptive survey research is susceptible to distortion through the introduction of bias into the design of the questionnaire, the researcher was careful to state questions that fulfil his specific research objective and that they were constructed in such a way that only the most important and relevant data was generated. The second stage involved the pilot test of the questionnaire, the creation of the cover letter that accompanied it and a discussion with the District Superintendent of the Gauteng churches during which the aims and purpose of the study was explained and permission sought to conduct the survey. The pilot test was conducted among ordained elders of the Church of the Nazarene who are all former full time pastors and are now serving as faculty and staff at the academic institution where the researcher is employed. The third stage involved the distribution and collection of the questionnaire. A full sampling of the intended respondents resulted in a fifty percent response and return rate. 7 Data generated by the survey led to the conclusion that pastors of the Church of the Nazarene in Gauteng knew of the problems in the church at Corinth but understood the causes of the problems to be fundamentally spiritual in nature. Responses generally referred to “unsanctified people, lack of love for each other and compromise with sin”. The respondents know what the cultural background of the Christians at Corinth was but indicated that the major influences on the problems were, again, essentially spiritual. Present application indicated that the pastors know and can communicate the doctrine of Sanctification (fundamental to the Church of the Nazarene) which is defined as a subsequent work of grace by the Holy Spirit that cleanses the believer from the principle of sin, enabling him or her to live in harmony with God and man. Problems (specifically moral and interpersonal) would generally be construed to be due to an unsanctified spirit or compromise with sin. Respondents further indicated that cultural values that are in conflict with the Bible and Christian values should be rejected but there is reservation with regard to whether a sanctified person should struggle with moral and interpersonal issues. The persuasion in this regard is that as the believer grows in grace these issues that cause struggle will become less. However, more pastors believe unreservedly that a sanctified believer should not struggle with moral and interpersonal issues. The implication is that if the sanctified struggles there must be something wrong with the consecration or there is compromise with sin. People who cause problems are generally told to pray and ask God for guidance. This advice generally corresponds with the understanding of the origin of 8 problems. The belief surrounding this understanding is that moral and interpersonal struggles which generally result in problems in the church stem from persons who are unsanctified and compromising with sin. It is further postulated that Sanctification or the second / subsequent work of grace cleanses the heart from the principle or inclination to sin. Therefore, if the person sins, he or she cannot be sanctified and must be encouraged to seek the experience by asking God for guidance. The hypothesis of the study was proven to be correct by the data generated through the survey. Recommendations to remedy the current practice of Theological Docetism in the Church of the Nazarene in Gauteng involve the pastors making a conscious effort to learn the cultural backgrounds of their increasingly diversified congregants, gaining crosscultural communication skills and embarking on lifelong learning endeavours.

Abstract:
To better understand and improve the cathode process for Proton exchange membrane fuel cell, we studied systematically the mechanism of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on group 8–11 metals and their alloys using density functional theory calculations. To address the contribution of solvent effect, we developed a practical implicit solvation model based on Poisson-Boltzmann equation. We discovered that solvation changed greatly the reaction barriers and hence the pathways preferences. The two well known mechanisms O2-diss and OOH-form mechanisms become impossible with water solvation. Instead, we found three new alternative mechanisms, namely, O2-diss-hydr, OOH-form-hydr, and high-H mechanisms. We showed that the oxygen hydrolysis Oad + H2Oad -> 2OHad plays an important role in the ORR which leads to the preferred O2-diss-hydr mechanism. We also developed a method to study the processes involving electron transfer between the solvent and the electrode. We found that direct OH formation from Oad and H3O+ has a high barrier of 0.70eV and is hence unlikely to be the dominant way of forming OHad at the operating potential of 0.8V. The potential dependent barrier leads to an overall optimal operating potential of 0.68V. We also studied the ORR on Pt3Ni alloys and found that the sublayer Ni atoms imposes an inhomogeneity in surface binding sites. The different binding energies make the barriers coverage dependent. Pt3Ni can only outperform Pt at higher coverage. We also showed the general approach of studying an unknown alloying system using Pd-Cu system as an example. We studied the structural, surface cleavage, and binding site preferences for various types of PdCu alloys. We predicted that 1:1 PdCu alloy with L11 structure and layered surface is a better catalyst than pure Pd and Cu, which agrees with later experiments.

Abstract:
Pentecostalism has, in recent times, undeniably contributed towards the growth of the church as a whole. Public worship services inherently submit and contribute towards the meeting between man and God as well as fellowship between the people who form part of said service. Public services in honor of God speak to the purposes of God and man’s fundamental desire to meet with our Creator. Consequently, research into this phenomenon proves vital in determining and even extending the role of the Pentecostal ideology in correlation to the longevity of honorary public services. Chapters 2 through 4 shed light on some of the key concepts that clarifies the dynamic nature of these events, throughout the service wherein the radiant power of God touches the human heart in some astounding ways. Exegetic studies have been undertaken into 2 Chronicles 5-7 which examines these instances of divine meeting in the Old Testament while the second chapter of Acts deals with the event from a New Testament perspective. In addition to this, 1 Corinthians 11-14 was utilized to highlight the role of the Holy Ghost as the instigator for divine meeting. Specific issues addressed by the research include service preparation and the role of music and its contribution to ambience preceding a meeting between man and God. Moreover, a keen focus on the sermon and the delivery thereof as well as its progression leading up to the conclusion and summary in closing and prayer, are all dealt with as part of this study. This dynamic, in essence, becomes visible through the statement issued by the life of each disciple as a living testament to this consuming and changing event. Honorary public services fit the bill as an event to promote divine meeting. Chapter 5 delves into some of the auxiliary sciences i.e. sociology, communication science, psychology and the field of antropology. The principles in chapters 2 through 4 are affirmed by these aspects of science and provide perspective on the practical applications thereof. All these factors in relation to practice have also been scrutinized through empirical research. This research clearly places divine meeting as a central to and inseparable from perceiver experience. Chapter 7 provides practical guidelines to alternative approaches in practicum. The study proposes a model whereby certain aspects can be examined from a Pentecostal point of view in order to tailor services as a dais for divine meeting. Most importantly it should be evident in the life of the participant that they have truly encounter God. This meeting is the prime objective and at the heart of public service. It serves and should always serve as a doorway to Christian life.

Barbe, Catherine. "Étude de l'association entre le genre et les troubles anxieux des enfants de 6 à 8 ans et de 9 à 11 ans de la population scolaire." Thèse, 2009. http://www.archipel.uqam.ca/1975/1/D1775.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:

Haynes, Matthew Brian. "The Sabbath commandment in Exodus 20:8-11 in the light of the first creation account / Matthew Brian Haynes." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/16578.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is an attempt to define more clearly the Sabbath institution as it is presented in Exodus 20:8-11. It begins by describing the big-picture contours of the Sabbath institution as it has been depicted by various scholars during the last century. Many of these studies focus on delineating what proper Sabbath observance entails or describing how Sabbath rest mirrors God’s rest on the seventh day of creation. However, little investigation has been conducted into the relationship between the fourth commandment in Exodus 20 and the shape of humanity’s task and relationship with God on the seventh day. The study then examines the nature of God’s rest in the first creation account, describing what “rest” entailed for God, and the work from which he rested. It suggests that this “rest” is from the creational activity of the first six days and that it continues on into the present. It also discusses the relationship between the concept of rest offered by the first creation account and the concept of rest in the understanding of the Ancient Near East and Israel. Humanity’s role in the created order is also examined. While humans share some qualities with other creatures, such as an embodied existence, they are also distinct from the rest of creation. Only humans are created in the image of God. As such, they are given tasks unique to their status: subduing the earth, exercising dominion over the creatures of the earth, and expanding the borders of the garden as they multiply and fill the earth. These form the heart of their God-given task that they will carry out as God enjoys his seventh-day rest. Next, the study investigates the particulars of Exodus 20:8-11 and suggests a reading of these particulars against the backdrop of the seventh day as it is described in chapters 3-4. While the rationale for the Sabbath commandment is grounded in the events of the first creation account, the commandment itself also needs to be understood in the context of the Decalogue and, in turn, in the context of the law’s reception at Sinai. The law, and hence the fourth commandment, are central to the calling and purpose of Israel. As Israel fulfils its mandate to be a light to the nations, it will reflect the ideals of the seventh day as they are encapsulated in the law. Far from simply mirroring God’s rest, the fourth commandment reflects the relationship between God and humanity and humanity’s role on the seventh day of creation. The study concludes by drawing together various pieces of the argument and makes suggestions for further research.

Abstract:
This thesis looks at how relevant 2 Corinthians 5:18-21 and Romans 5:1-11 is for bringing about reconciliation between victims and offenders in serious crime. Their relevance is discussed in the light of a psychological model of rape trauma and recovery and the real experiences of rape victims and rape offenders. The crime of rape is used and examined paradigmatically for serious crime as a whole. I contend in this thesis that reconciliation between victims and offenders, in serious crime, can promote healing, especially if it is done through careful mediation.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis deals with Dmitry Shostakovich and his works. Its aim is to map the life of the composer and to further characterize his two works, Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 a minor op. 77 and String Quartet No. 8 in C minor op. 110. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is about composer's life in the difficult living and creative conditions of the Soviet Union of that time and about selected compositions of his. In the following two chapters, the analyzes of the two above-mentioned works and the historical context in which they were create are presented. The thesis also provides an interpretative analysis of the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 a minor, which is also an interpretative comparison of the concert recordings of David Oistrach and Julian Rachlin.

"An anthropological approach to the New Testament? : a critical analysis of Mary Douglas's "Grid/group" model with respect to understanding the dynamics of the early Corinthian church, as alluded to in 1 Corinthians, and particularly 14:33B-36 & 11:17-34." Abstract:
The last three decades has seen a significant shift in the discipline of New Testament studies. In particular we have observed the rise of the social sciences and with them, new methodologies which have eclipsed the more traditional "criticisms" such as form criticism and source criticism. New Testament scholars have realised that we can no longer afford to ignore these advances, and have produced a prolific amount of work which draws upon sociology in particular, and also social anthropology and psychology. Despite the consensus that the social sciences are able to provide invaluable tools for the study of the New Testament, the research that has drawn on these tools has not been without critique. A common thread to these evaluations is that the focus is so exclusively social scientific that the text often becomes lost in the endeavour. When the text is referred to, it is used not unlike a proof text - to prove the suspicions one has already formed. Similarly, we have noticed that those literary studies which relate more to the structure, plot and themes of a text may become so focused on specific words, tenses and so on, that the actual people and context of the text become lost in the exercise. Therefore our challenge is to develop an approach that takes both the social sciences and the text into equal account. This thesis is then an experiment in method. In the quest for an inclusive and holistic approach to the New Testament, we propose to combine Mary Douglas's anthropological "grid/group" model with a series of questions developed by Howard Kee which are aimed at "Interrogating the text". Having discussed a number of methodological considerations we suggest a four step approach which we believe will enable us to analyze the New Testament from a comprehensively anthropological perspective, while at the same time considering the text responsibly and fully. As a test of our methodology we first analyze the complete text of Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, and then compare our approach with a similarly anthropological method adopted by Stephen Barton in his 1986 article entitled, Paul's sense of place: an anthropological approach to community formation in Corinth (1) which discusses the specific texts of 1 Cor. 1:17-34 and 14:33b-36. The results of this test were mixed. On the one hand our methodology provided a detailed examination of the views held by both the Corinthians and Paul which we were able to contrast. Our use of Douglas's "grid/group" "model also allowed a certain amount of prediction as to how these players would likely have responded to events. However, we discovered that the questions used to "Interrogate the text" are somewhat tedious and repetitive. Therefore, some modification and refinement of these questions would be advocated. (1.)
