Abstract:
When Henry II (1154–1189) ascended the English throne, centralization of administration became a key theme of his government and judicial reform a key theme of centralization. Throughout his reign, Henry enlarged royal jurisdiction over pleas of land by providing, by means of royal writs, jury trial before the king's justices as an alternative to judgment in the seignorial courts. The assize of novel disseisin (1155 x 1166) led the way for the assizes utrum (1164), mort d'ancestor (1176), and darrein presentment (post 1179), and for the Grand Assize (c. 1179) and writs of dower. Henry also centralized and tightened royal jurisdiction over criminal pleas through the Assize of Clarendon (1166) and reform of the appeal of felony.

Abstract:
In the late twelfth century, the practice of hawking and falconry was symbolically ambiguous, associated powerfully with the secular life yet also open to mystical interpretation. This paper suggests that the authors of St Thomas Becket’s miracle collections, as well as his contemporary biographers, appropriated this ambiguity as a means of reconciling some of the contradictions of Becket’s career. Henry II was himself an avid enthusiast for hunting with birds, and records show a marked increase in the number of transactions involving birds of prey, and the number of falconers employed to handle them, during his reign (1154–1189).

Abstract:
This collection deals generally with the twelfth-century Hohenstaufen domains, which were called an “empire” by contemporaries, and the Plantagenet territories, which were not. The focus, although it is not adhered to rigidly, is the period of Henry II (1154–1189) in the Plantagenet areas of England and Western France and of Frederick I Barbarossa (1152–1190) in the Holy Roman Empire. It contains an introduction and nine substantive articles, two in German and the rest in English. Each paper appends its own list of sources and bibliography and an abstract in English. There is a substantial literature on most topics discussed, to which the authors add their own interpretations.
