Abstract:
Numerous treatment modalities incorporate spirituality as an important part of treatment. The 12-step program is one such program which claims to enhance one's spirituality, yet empirical support is limited. This preliminary study compared clients in 12-step outpatient programs to clients in non-12-step outpatient programs to assess the programs’ impact on spirituality. From scores on the Spiritual Well-Being Scale, no significant differences between 12-step programs and non-12-step programs were found, yet both treatments were found to lead to a significant increase over time of client spirit

Abstract This paper examines the conceptual bridge between Jewish mystical traditions and the 12-step spiritual framework, exploring how the "Higher Power" concept navigates the epistemology-ontology divide in contemporary religious consciousness. Through comparative analysis of Martin Buber and Gershom Scholem's approaches to divine encounter, alongside Moshe Idel and Harry Wolfson's divergent methodologies, this study positions the 12-step model as a practical embodiment of mystical theology in secular contexts. The analysis demonstrates how the Oxford Group's Protestant eva

SummaryA previously unknown Spanish-language mutual aid resource for substance use and mental health concerns is available in Latino communities across the USA and much of Latin America. This kind of ‘4th and 5th step’ group is a ‘culturally adapted’ version of the 12-step programme and provides empirical grounds on which to re-theorise the importance of spirituality and culture in mutual aid recovery groups. This article presents ethnographic data on this organisation.

Life is meaningless, drowsy, stressful, boring, wasteful, and fruitless without purpose. Hence, purpose justifies someone’s existence on earth. It is assumed therefore that nobody was born by accident. The Creator, God thought about it and decided that it was good for one to be born. It is therefore one’s responsibility to find the reasons that justify one’s existence on earth and choose a career that corresponds with it.
