Abstract:
This chapter enhances the contemporary view of the late medieval Abbasid caliphate through a discussion of medieval Arabic chronicles and biographical literature. The chapter demonstrates the continuing evolution of what was already a centuries-old Islamic institution and idea for socio-political organisation and examines the attempts of medieval historians to transmit the Abbasid Caliphate of their own time to posterity.
