Papatheodorou, Christos. "Dimensions of income inequality in Greece." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1999. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1552/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigated certain dimensions of inequality in Greece that have not or have only partially been explored so far, utilising the micro-data of a survey carried out in 1988 by the National Centre for Social Research. Reviewed were relevant studies conducted in the past, and evaluated were the available statistical data and information. Certain theoretical and methodological issues that one encounters when analysing and measuring inequality were also discussed. Initially, an analysis by income source was employed, which provided valuable information on the structure and profile of income inequality in Greece. The decomposition analysis by income components showed that entrepreneurial income is the most significant contributor to overall inequality in Greece, despite the fact that it represents a relatively small fraction of household income. Income taxes and social security contribution appeared to have a very weak distributional impact on overall inequality. This impact was explored further by employing regression analysis. It was found that the share of income tax and contributions is mainly related to wages and salaries. The most effective way to maximise their distributional impact is by eliminating tax evasion among the recipients of entrepreneurial income. The average household income was found to be greatly affected by certain population characteristics, and inequality appeared to vary substantially between population subgroups. The decomposition analysis showed that in all the population groups used, inequality between groups accounted for only a very small segment of the overall inequality. Finally, the hypothesis that, in Greece, the family background is a significant factor in determining the offspring's socio-economic status was tested. A loglinear analysis was used in order to uncover all the potentially complex relationship among the variables employed. These results suggested that people face unequal opportunities for education and unequal probabilities of falling below the poverty line due to their family background.

Li, Sheng. "Adaptive interference suppression algorithms for DS-UWB systems." Thesis, University of York, 2010. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1552/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the time-domain, symbol by symbol transmission multiuser DS-UWB systems are considered. We first investigate a generic reduced-rank scheme based on the concept of joint and iterative optimization (JIO) that jointly optimizes a projection vector and a reduced-rank filter by using the minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) criterion. A low-complexity scheme, named Switched Approximations of Adaptive Basis Functions (SAABF), is proposed as a modification of the generic scheme, in which the complexity reduction is achieved by using a multi-branch framework to simplify the structure of the projection vector. Adaptive implementations for the SAABF scheme are developed by using least-mean squares (LMS) and recursive least-squares (RLS) algorithms. We also develop algorithms for selecting the branch number and the model order of the SAABF scheme. Secondly, a novel linear reduced-rank blind adaptive receiver based on JIO and the constrained constant modulus (CCM) design criterion is proposed that offers higher spectrum efficiency. Adaptive implementations for the blind JIO receiver are developed by using the normalized stochastic gradient (NSG) and RLS algorithms. In order to obtain a low-complexity scheme, the columns of the projection matrix with the RLS algorithm are updated individually. Blind channel estimation algorithms for both versions (NSG and RLS) are implemented. Assuming the perfect timing, the JIO receiver only requires the knowledge of the spreading code of the desired user and the received data. In the frequency-domain, we propose two adaptive detection schemes based on singlecarrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) for the block by block transmission multiuser DS-UWB systems, which are termed structured channel estimation (SCE) and direct adaptation (DA). Both schemes use the MMSE linear detection strategy and employ a cyclic prefix. In the SCE scheme, we perform the adaptive channel estimation in the frequency-domain and implement the despreading in the time-domain after the FDE. In this scheme, the MMSE detection requires the knowledge of the number of users and the noise variance. For this purpose, we propose low-complexity algorithms for estimating these parameters. In the DA scheme, the interference suppression task is fulfilled with only one adaptive filter in the frequency-domain and a new signal expression is adopted to simplify the design of such a filter. LMS, RLS and conjugate gradient (CG) adaptive algorithms are then developed for both schemes. Another strand of investigation considers adaptive detectors and frequency domain equalization for multiuser DS-UWB systems with block transmissions and biased estimation methods. Biased estimation techniques can provide performance improvements to the existing unbiased estimation algorithms. In this work, biased adaptive estimation techniques based on shrinkage estimators are devised and incorporated into RLS-type algorithms. For the SCE scheme, automatic shrinkage factor mechanisms are proposed and incorporated into RLS estimators, obtaining a lower MSE of the channel estimation. For the DA scheme, the automatic shrinkage factors are incorporated directly to the adaptive receiver weights. The results show that a shorter data support is required by the proposed biased DA-RLS technique. An analysis of fundamental estimation limits of the proposed frequency domain biased estimators is included along with the derivation of appropriate Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLB).

von, Sachsen Moritz. "Politische Korrespondenz des Herzogs und Kurfürsten Moritz von Sachsen / Fünfter Band : 9. Januar 1551 – 1. Mai 1552." Akademie Verlag, 1998. https://slub.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A16280.

Abstract:
Hamann, Mazure Johanna. "Monumentos públicos y espacios urbanos. Lima, 1919-1930." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of this dissertation is Lima's public art and its relationship with the processes of "city making", during the period 1919-1930.
In this dissertation, the author identifies the government of Augusto B. Leguía (1919 - 1930), called also the Oncenio, as a key moment in the republican history of Peru, when there was a rational, harmonious and functional proposal of development of the city of Lima. Starting in 1866, when the city walls were demolished, the author analyzes successive modernizing urban proposals up to 1919. The political and economic ideas that support the scheme of the "Patria Nueva" are the basis of an urban design and production of artistic and sculptural landscape, concentrated mostly in the style called "Neo-Peruvian".
The author includes a detailed record of spaces and monuments, parks, plazas, malls, streets, built in the Oncenio in public spaces, analyzing trends, styles, and contexts in the city and its surroundings. The relevance of the research goes beyond the covering historic research gaps, in its search of the achievements and contradictions of this project, in order to raise questions about the urban future of Lima.

Satterfield, Michael Carey. "Evaluation of the effect of progesterone CIDR Devices on circulating levels of progesterone in cyclic ewes." Texas A&M University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
A homogeneous group of thirty-one crossbred ewes was used to determine the effect of administering a progesterone Controlled Intravaginal Drug Releasing Device (CIDR) on circulating levels of progesterone in the subsequent cycle following CIDR removal. Circulating progesterone levels were determined for each ewe through daily blood collection via jugular venipuncture. Each ewe underwent a pretreatment 25 day sampling period (Period 1), a 12 day treatment period characterized by the presence of the CIDR (Period 2), and another 25 day sampling period following CIDR removal (Period 3). During the initial period of the study, progesterone levels in peripheral circulation changed (P < 0.0001, effect of day) in accordance with stage of the estrous cycle and were elevated during the luteal phase. In the second period of the study, progesterone levels were elevated (P < 0.0001) in ewes due to exogenous progesterone from the CIDR device (Period 1 versus Period 2: 1.3 ± 0.1 ng/ml versus 2.4 ± 0.1 ng/ml, respectively). After withdrawal of the CIDR in the third period of the study, circulating progesterone levels were not (P > 0.10) different from those observed in the initial period of the study (Period 1 versus Period 3: 1.3 ± 0.1 ng/ml versus 1.4 ± 0.1 ng/ml, respectively). Data collected in this study revealed that treatment with exogenous progesterone via CIDR for a 12- day treatment period does not influence circulating levels of progesterone in subsequent estrous cycles.

Slabbert, Gabriel Johannes. "Facilitating customer retention in hotels in the Garden Route." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past few decades, customer satisfaction, customer retention and policies and procedures to sustain the above mentioned, have earned great amount of lip service. The importance of satisfied customer percentage have been emphasized by theories even longer before the best advised companies have done so. It is only recently, on the eve of the Soccer World cup 2010 that the issue has been narrowed down to truly hard relationships and one hard question: “Will the guest visiting the hospitality establishment frequent the hotel?” Two vital financial catalysts were used as basis for customer retention. The first is that of old customer’s costs much less than acquisition of new ones and the profit generated from the retained customer must therefore handsomely exceed the harvest reaped from the new clientele. Retaining customers have become an intangible asset in the sense that their value demonstrates the return that is won by successful efforts to satisfy the customers so greatly that they and their custom literally and figuratively stays with you. South Africa has lured even the loneliest traveller to the scenic beauty that is cradled by the country and its surroundings. When taking the former into consideration, South African businesses have enjoyed an increased appreciation and application of Business Management and its accompanying principles. The hospitality industry should therefore embrace the business management principles with specific emphasis on Total Quality Management (TQM); providing managers with the capacity to think strategically about the organisation, its business position, how it can gain sustainable competitive advantage and how its business management strategy can be implemented and executed successfully. The latter forms the basis for ensuring the smooth running of operations and ultimately, ensuring guests have a wonderful experience at the particular establishment. There is a strong belief that lodging facilities in the Garden Route area has experienced low customer retention due to a lack of comprehensive implementation of Total Quality Management principles which impedes on the establishments to reach their optimum profit levels. It is for this reason that this thesis will argue the importance of the systematic client retention as a strategic mandate in today’s service markets. Commercial reality demand long and lasting relationships that are beneficial to both the hospitality related establishment and their customers. The hypothesis used is the application of Total Quality Management as a Business Management Strategy which will facilitate customer retention in hospitality related industries such as hotels situated in the Garden Route area. Research shows that service expectations of customers and potential customers have escalated. Hospitality businesses found that implementation of quality processes to be a vital competitive component. However, many hotels are still struggling to reach a real understanding of what is meant by TQM. The research data indicates that 93 percent of hotels in the Garden Route do not follow a TQM program although all the hotels were familiar with the concept. This might be the reason why most hotels neglect customer retention activities. The literature reviewed in chapter two considers the customer retention activities evaluated in the questionnaire as important to retain guests. Hotels in the Garden Route do not perform these activities to the extent of success. Hotel managers thus know what to do in order to retain guests but the problem is quite simple, they do not always implement the necessary strategies.

Pulletikurthi, Chandan. "Biocompatibility Assessment of Biosorbable Polymer Coated Nitinol Alloys." FIU Digital Commons, 2014. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
Owing to an increased risk of aging population and a higher incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD), there is a need for more reliable and safer treatments. Numerous varieties of durable polymer-coated drug eluting stents (DES) are available in the market in order to mitigate in-stent restenosis. However, there are certain issues regarding their usage such as delayed arterial healing, thrombosis, inflammation, toxic corrosion by-products, mechanical stability and degradation. As a result, significant amount of research has to be devoted to the improvement of biodegradable polymer-coated implant materials in an effort to enhance their bioactive response. In this investigation, magneto-electropolished (MEP) and a novel biodegradable polymer coated ternary Nitinol alloys, NiTiTa and NiTiCr were prepared to study their bio and hemocompatibility properties. The initial interaction of a biomaterial with its surroundings is dependent on its surface characteristics such as, composition, corrosion resistance, work of adhesion and morphology. In-vitro corrosion tests such as potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) studies were conducted to determine the coating stability and longevity. In-vitro hemocompatibility studies and HUVEC cell growth was performed to determine their thrombogenic and biocompatibility properties. Critical delamination load of the polymer coated Nitinol alloys was determined using Nano-scratch analysis. Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assays were performed to elucidate the effect of metal ions leached from Nitinol alloys on the viability of HUVEC cells. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle meter and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the surface of the alloys. MEP treated and polymer coated (PC) Nitinol alloys displayed a corrosion resistant polymer coating as compared to uncoated alloys. MEP and PC has resulted in reduced Ni and Cr ion leaching from NiTi5Cr and subsequently low cytotoxicity. Thrombogenicity tests revealed significantly less platelet adhesion and confluent endothelial cell growth on polymer coated and uncoated ternary MEP Nitinol alloys. Finally, this research addresses the bio and hemocompatibility of MEP + PC ternary Nitinol alloys that could be used to manufacture blood contacting devices such as stents and vascular implants which can lead to lower U.S. healthcare spending.

Muller, Denis Joseph Andrew. "Media accountability in a liberal democracy : an examination of the harlot's prerogative /." Connect to thesis, 2005. http://repository.unimelb.edu.au/10187/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is both a normative and empirical study of media accountability in a liberal democracy. While its focus is predominantly on Australia, it contains some international comparisons. Media ethics and media performance in relation to quality of media content are identified as the two main dimensions of media accountability. They may be conceived of as the means and the ends of media work. The thesis represents the first combined survey of both external mechanisms of accountability in Australia – those existing outside the various media organisations – and the internal mechanisms existing within three of Australia’s largest media organisations. These organisations span print and broadcasting, public and private ownership. The thesis is based on substantial qualitative research involving interviews with a wide range of experts in media ethics, law, management, and accountability. It is also based on two quantitative surveys, one among practitioners of journalism and the other among the public they serve. This combination of research is certainly new in Australia, and no comparable study has been found in other Western countries. In addition to the main qualitative and quantitative surveys, three case studies are presented. One deals with media performance in relation to quality of media content (the case of alleged bias brought against the Australian Broadcasting Corporation by the then Senator Richard Alston); one deals with media ethics (the “cash-for-comment” cases involving various commercial radio broadcasters), and one deals with accountability processes (the “Who Is Right?” experiment at The Sydney Morning Herald).

Ravindran, Apoorv. "Investigation of inverse acoustical characterization of porous materials used in aircraft noise control application." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
Sound propagation through porous media such as foams and fibers is governed by five parameters that describe the geometry of the porous frame: porosity, tortuosity, flow resistivity, viscous characteristic length, and thermal characteristic length. The conventional laboratory methods for measuring these geometric properties are prone to errors and can be highly cumbersome. In this work, an alternative method of determining the geometric properties of porous materials, based on an inverse acoustical technique, was investigated for materials used in aircraft noise-control applications. This technique is incorporated in commercial software codes, such as FOAM-X (ESI Group) and Comet TrimTM (Comet Acoustics), which require the absorption coefficient and/or transmission loss (TL) to be measured in Brüel and Kjær (or equivalent) standing wave tubes as inputs. The estimated geometric properties are required to define the porous material for complex vibroacoustic analysis in commercial code such as AutoSEA2 (ESI Group). One of the goals of this work was to evaluate the accuracy of the estimated geometric properties. A closed-loop validation technique was previously developed where the absorption coefficient and transmission loss were predicted using AutoSEA2 and compared with the standing wave tube measurements. Good agreement between the measured and predicted absorption coefficient was observed for both foams and fibers. However, in the case of transmission loss, good agreement was observed for fibers but not for foams. In order to eliminate inconsistencies, the existing validation loop was modified by incorporating Comet TrimTM inverse characterization software that took both the normal incidence absorption coefficient and transmission loss as sequential inputs to estimate the geometric properties. To complete the modified loop, sound absorption and transmission loss of porous materials was predicted using the performance analysis module in Comet TrimTM and compared with the test results. In general, the absorption coefficient of most of the foams and fibers, prediction using both validation loops was in good correlation with the measured data. On the other hand, the correlation in normal incidence transmission loss was better using the modified loop. In the process of investigating the repeatability of estimating the physical properties, previously measured porous material samples were re-measured for their absorption coefficient and transmission loss. A possible effect of sample aging was discovered and reported. As an alternate method to the forward TL calculation, a finite element model of the standing wave tube was also developed. This could be used to study the effect of boundary conditions on acoustic properties. Finally, individually validated samples were combined to develop optimized multilayer aircraft noise-control treatments and were experimentally demonstrated to produce excellent acoustical performance.

Enshaei, Amir. "Development of Artificial Intelligence systems as a prediction tool in ovarian cancer." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
Ovarian cancer is the 5th most common cancer in females and the UK has one of the highest incident rates in Europe. In the UK only 36% of patients will live for at least 5 years after diagnosis. The number of prognostic markers, treatments and the sequences of treatments in ovarian cancer are rising. Therefore, it is getting more difficult for the human brain to perform clinical decision making. There is a need for an expert computer system (e.g. Artificial Intelligence (AI)), which is capable of investigating the possible outcomes for each marker, treatment and sequence of treatment. Such expert systems may provide a tool which could help clinicians to analyse and predict outcome using different treatment pathways. Whilst prediction of overall survival of a patient is difficult there may be some benefits, as this not only is useful information for the patient but may also determine treatment modality. In this project a dataset was constructed of 352 patients who had been treated at a single centre. Clinical data were extracted from the health records. Expert systems were then investigated to determine the optimum model to predict overall survival of a patient. The five year survival period (a standard survival outcome measure in cancer research) was investigated; in addition, the system was developed with the flexibility to predict patient survival rates for many other categories. Comparisons with currently used prognostic models in ovarian cancer demonstrated a significant improvement in performance for the AI model (Area under the Curve (AUC) of 0.72 for AI and AUC of 0.62 for the statistical model). Using various methods, the most important variables in this prediction were identified as: FIGO stage, outcome of the surgery and CA125. This research investigated the effects of increasing the number of cases in prediction models. Results indicated that by increasing the number of cases, the prediction performance improved. Categorization of continuous data did not improve the prediction performance. The project next investigated the possibility of predicting surgical outcomes in ovarian cancer using AI, based on the variables that are available for clinicians prior to the surgery. Such a tool could have direct clinical relevance. Diverse models that can predict the outcome of the surgery were investigated and developed. The developed AI models were also compared against the standard statistical prediction model, which demonstrated that the AI model outperformed the statistical prediction model: the prediction of all outcomes (complete or optimal or suboptimal) (AUC of AI: 0.71 and AUC of statistical model: 0.51), the prediction of complete or optimal cytoreduction versus suboptimal cytoreduction (AUC of AI: 0.73 and AUC of statistical model: 0.50) and finally the prediction of complete cytoreduction versus optimal or suboptimal cytoreduction (AUC of AI: 0.79 and AUC of statistical model: 0.47). The most important variables for this prediction were identified as: FIGO stage, tumour grade and histology. The application of transcriptomic analysis to cancer research raises the question of which genes are significantly involved in a particular cancer and which genes can accurately predict survival outcomes in a given cancer. Therefore, AI techniques were employed to identify the most important genes for the prediction of Homologous Recombination (HR), an important DNA repair pathway in ovarian cancer, identifying LIG1 and POLD3 as novel prognostic biomarkers. Finally, AI models were used to predict the HR status for any given patient (AUC: 0.87). This project has demonstrated that AI may have an important role in ovarian cancer. AI systems may provide tools to help clinicians and research in ovarian cancer and may allow more informed decisions resulting in better management of this cancer.

Buckingham, Sarah Ann. "Suicide in adults aged 75 and over in Cornwall : an epidemiological and case study analysis." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction/Background: Suicide in older people is a historically neglected research area. Local audits had suggested that Cornwall had a higher than average suicide rate, and people aged 75 years and over appeared to be at particularly high risk. Heterogeneity between studies and variations in presenting suicide statistics can make comparison of rates difficult. Aims: The study aimed to explore in depth the epidemiology of suicide in elderly people in Cornwall, to develop an understanding of the risk factors (including sources of stress), suicide methods, locations, and warnings, and consequently to identify potential preventive strategies. Methods: A mixed methods approach was taken, combining quantitative epidemiological study of suicide using Office for National Statistics (ONS) Public Health Mortality Files with qualitative retrospective case study analysis using coroner’s records and local audit database. All completed suicides (and some systematically selected open verdicts) in people aged 75 years and over occurring in Cornwall between 2006 and 2010 were included. A questionnaire survey of rural community dwelling people aged 75 years and over (n = 49) in a part of Cornwall was also carried out to identify the main sources of stress associated with ageing in the local area. Results: Some discrepancies in the number of open verdicts reported by the coroner and ONS were noted. Although suicide in the over 75 age group was responsible for only 0.3 % of all-cause mortality in males and 0.1 % in females, the overall suicide rate in this age group in Cornwall was significantly higher than the average for the UK, with a Standardised Mortality Ratio of 172 (95 % CI 123 to 236). Males aged between 75 and 84 years had the highest suicide rate in Cornwall (mean of 25.8 deaths per 100,000 population, 95 % CI 1.1 to 50.5). Jumping from a height and suffocation were the most frequently used methods, accounting for 8 and 7 of the 34 deaths respectively. 28 of the 34 suicides took place at home. Depressive illness, physical illness and bereavement were the most commonly identified risk factors. Concerns revealed in survey responses were closely related to suicide risk factors, including fear of losing independence, bereavement, physical illness, isolation, and fear of becoming a burden. Warnings included previous self-harm or attempted suicide, suicide ideation or plans, behavioural changes and researching euthanasia. Discussion: As persons aged 75 and over are at significantly higher risk of suicide in Cornwall than other regions, there is a need to reduce the number of suicides in this group. Possible preventive measures include reducing access to means (in particular for jumping incidents), earlier detection of depression in the physically ill, bereavement counselling, more social groups and support groups in rural areas, helping people to retain their independence, and a change in societal attitudes towards elderly people. There may also be a need to improve the accuracy of suicide statistics. Conclusion: Health services, councils, voluntary groups and the community as a whole should work together to prevent suicide in older people. Future controlled studies should assess the effectiveness of interventions and focus more on differences between subgroups of elderly people.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between chemical threats in the physical environment and adverse health conditions among the residents of Soweto, South Africa. The chemical threats that were used in the analysis included lead, nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (S02), and a chemical compound composed of silicon, oxygen, hydrogen, and various metal cations (asbestos). The adverse health outcomes and symptoms included heart attack or angina, stroke, emphysema/bronchitis, asthma, tuberculosis, cancer, less breath, short of breath, wheezing or tightness of chest, wheezing only with a cold, sleep interrupted by coughing, sleep interrupted by wheezing with cough and phlegm, and phlegm everyday for three months. The study demonstrated that, based on the available data, there are no statistically significant associations between exposure to chemical threats in the physical environment and adverse health outcomes in Soweto, South Africa. The study also demonstrated the importance of contributing factors and how limitations of the data on exposure to chemical threats and human health outcomes impacted statistical analysis. Further areas for investigation include analyzing exposure to agrichemicals and other chemicals; the role of the social environment and its impact on human health conditions; and the availability of data on chemical threats in the physical environment and adverse health conditions among the residents of Soweto, South Africa.

Ayeebo, Jacob Kofi. "The liberating mission of Jesus and the Anglicans of Tamale with special reference to St. Luke's gospel / Jacob Kofi Ayeebo." Thesis, North-West University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past two decades the study of mission has become increasingly important as a pathogen in theology. This is because there has been a tendency by some scholars to place emphasis on the preaching of the Gospel of salvation and personal liberation from sin, on the one hand, and to emphasise the pursuit of social justice in order to liberate people from poverty and suffering, on the other; thus, creating a serious dichotomy in the Church's mission This thesis is propelled by a yearning for an holistic understanding and practice of mission in the Anglican Diocese of Tamale. Thus, the thesis explores the liberating works of Jesus, specifically in the Gospel of Luke, as a paradigm for mission in the Anglican Diocese of Tamale. The theological framework is St. Luke's gospel. In presenting the exegetical work on Luke's gospel, key themes emerged and were discussed accordingly. It was obvious that the Gospel of Luke is for the poor and that the nature of God's love is universal. Throughout the study, it is made clear that mission is an initiative of God that offers total salvation through the Church's mission and task. The Church's mission, however, is not only to communicate the gospel so that people will understand it but also, mission should aim for the transformation of people as individuals and as communities. To assess the work, four methods of research have been used: Questionnaires Interviews Document analysis and Observation study. The structured interviews and questionnaire were distributed to clergy, to some selected laity and to church development workers in the Diocese in order to ascertain their views on holistic mission. In addition, other methods were employed within the research to ascertain the relevant information related to the topic: visits to the sites of other projects; extensive reading and analysis of contemporary writings on Christian mission theology; and Christian development work. Arising from this, a detailed content analysis of the responses and documents are presented. Having established the research methodology, the thesis proceeds to explore the area context of the Tamale Diocese to provide the reader with some knowledge of the Ghanaian indigenous worldview, which can either facilitate or a hinder holistic mission practice. Following that, the history of Anglican mission in northern Ghana is examined. The research notes that socio-economic projects have impacted economically on the beneficiaries. However, political and spiritual impacts are minimal. Other strengths and weakness of the diocese and her projects are identified; for instance, working in groups, and the lack of programmes to draw the attention of banks to micro-credit schemes for women are identified as strengths and weaknesses respectively. Arising from the results, a number of critical areas that appear central to holistic mission are identified and discussed, with the hope of influencing the Anglican Diocese of Tamale mission work to be holistic in its mission work; for example, promoting the managerial capacity of mission practitioners as well as beneficiaries, their full involvement in community activities and the pivotal role of the projects' staff were all considered vital for effective implementation of holistic mission. The findings from the research showed that there are many areas of the Church's mission where dualism is practised. The most important finding was that while evangelism and social action are combined in the activities of the churches, there is little in evidence in the Diocesan community development projects that specifically promote or encourage Christian witness. In other words, there is little evidence of that deeper level of holism we have attempted to articulate in this thesis. However, there are also a few findings that do not support the central theoretical argument. Various reflections and suggestions are made that could help to enrich the Diocese in this vital area of study. The study maintains that the Church's mission task should include evangelism, as well as addressing social and political issues and speaking with a 'prophetic voice' on the same platform. The thesis concludes by stressing that life must be looked at as an integrated whole, where the spiritual, the political, the social and the economic are all intertwined. It is my hope that this thesis will serve as a rich resource to those who may show interest in it and to those who may wish to pursue further studies in mission in the Tamale Diocese in the future.

This research follows the assumption that the notion of performativity can be applied to the visual construction of identity within art-making discourse in order to explore the contingent and mutable nature of identity in representation. My interest in performativity, defined as the active, repetitive and ritualistic processes responsible for the construction of subjectivities, lies within the process of production. I indicate how this notion, within the context of self-representation, can provide the possibility for performing identity as a process. I investigate the extent to which gender, the gaze, memory and narrative contribute to the performative construction of self-representations and reveal, through the exploration of my practical research, that these concepts are themselves performative. Although agency to construct the self can be regarded as problematic, considering the role of language and discourse in determining subjectivities, this research suggests that it is possible to perform interventions from within language. I suggest that the notion of inscription provides a means through which identity constructions can be performed differently; and that my art-making process of repetitive inscription, erasure and re-inscription of image and text and the layering of paint not only reflect the notion of performativity, but also enable me to expose the multiple and fragmented nature of identities.

Grubbs, Morris Allen. "Wendell Berry’s Cyclic Vision: Traditional Farming as Metaphor." TopSCHOLAR®, 1990. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
Although Wendell Berry’s first book, a novel, appeared in 1960, he did not gain significant national attention until the publication of his nonfiction manifesto, The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture, in 1977. Since its publication, Berry has moved increasingly toward the prose of persuasion as he continues to sharpen his argument in support of a practical, continuous harmony between the human economy and Nature. His canon as a whole – the poems, essays, and novels – is an ongoing and thorough exploration of man’s use of and relationship to the land. Arguing that the health of a culture is linked to the health of its land, Berry focuses on agriculture, particularly the growing conflict between traditional farming (which espouses a harmonious cyclic vision) and modern agribusiness (which espouses a discordant linear vision). As a traditional farmer wedded to the land, Berry derives his ideas and images largely from his practical experiences and form his devotion to careful and responsible land stewardship. He also, in his nonfiction, turns to several agricultural (as well as a few literary) writers of the past and present to lend support to his arguments. Berry’s strong sense of Nature’s cycle is the basis for his imagery of departures and returns. As a crucial part of the cycle, death is prerequisite to life, and Berry shows the importance of understanding “that the land we live on and the lives we live are the gifts of death” (Home Economics 62). The power of Nature’s cycle is at once destructive and restorative; Berry teaches that by allying our human economy more with natural cyclic processes rather than with man-made linear – and ultimately destructive – ones, we and future generations can live with hope and assurance through the possibility of renewal. Traditional farming has taught Berry the concepts which inform his poems and essays (as well as his novels and short stories, which merit a separate study beyond the scope of this paper.) For example, he has learned, and continues to learn, the importance of understanding and acknowledging the primal, and ruling, character of a “place”; of looking to Nature for guidance, instruction, and justice; and of allying farming practices to Nature’s “Wheel” of birth, growth, maturity, death, and decay. This cycle and related motifs unify and connect his central themes, particularly death as a means of renewal. In Berry’s view, one of the cruxes in the agricultural crisis is that, whereas traditional farming seeks a natural balance between growth and decay, industrial farming, because of its pull toward mass production, stresses growth only (a linear inclination), which wears out the land and leads inevitably to infertility. Tracing our modern crisis to our past and to our present character and culture, Berry shows the ramifications of our abuse of Nature’s “gifts.”

Vandercook, Sandra. "Exploring the Relationship between English Composition Teachers' Beliefs about Written Feedback and Their Written Feedback Practices." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2012. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
For teachers of freshman English composition, the most time-consuming aspect of teaching is responding to student papers (Anson, 2012; Straub, 2000b). Teachers respond in various ways, but most teachers agree that they should offer written feedback to students (Beach & Friedrich, 2006). However, little research has been conducted to determine how teachers’ written feedback practices reflect their beliefs about the purpose of such feedback. This qualitative study explores the relationship between English composition teachers’ beliefs about written feedback and their actual written feedback practices. The participants were a sample of four instructors of freshman English composition at a mid-sized metropolitan public university. Interviews, classroom observations, course documents, and samples of teachers’ written comments were analyzed to determine teachers’ written response practices and their beliefs related to the purposes of freshman writing and their roles as writing teachers. Results suggest that teachers were aware of their beliefs, and their written response practices were consistent with their beliefs. Teachers utilized different approaches to respond to student writing, but those approaches are consistent with current recommendations for responding to student writing. Three major themes emerged from the study. First, teachers must be given the opportunity to reflect about and articulate their beliefs about written response so they will know why they respond in the way they do. Second, teachers work within the boundaries of their specific writing program to organize their written responses to student writing. Third, teachers must respond to student writing from varying perspectives as readers of the text. The findings support studies which indicate that written response is a sociocultural practice and teacher beliefs are just one aspect of the complex nature of teacher written response. The study should add to the fields of response theory and the formation of teacher beliefs.

Since the drawings found on cave walls in rock art to the present day, the plot has evolved in an amazing way. A major contribution to this development has been the very technological developments which allowed improving old techniques and create new forms of representation. One of these new forms is the multimedia infographics, subject of this work. The results of infographics link between graphical representations and textual elements, the latter intended to be a supplement and not the predominant factor. In this way seeks to transmit information complex effectively, drawing on a set of rules. Wanting to explore the simplicity and clarity informational infographics that allows the explanation of complex phenomena, this paper presents an interactive infographic about Parkinson's Disease.
Canine brucellosis is an infectious disease, caused by Brucella canís, that generally affects, the reproductive tract. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of canine brucellosis in two districts, Bellavista and Callao. In order to achieve this goal, 45 of dogs of these two, districts, were collected and analyzed using Agar Gel Immuno diffusion (AGID) test with B.ovis antigen. The results indicate that 15,57% (711456), with an Icí 3,33%, of the sampled animais were positive in this test. Among the variables considered in this study, significative stadistic difference in the percentages of positive dogs, was found only in the case of reproductive history. Evaluating the same variables with Chi cuadrado, there was sígnificative stadistic 3.sso( only between reproductive history and the ratio of infection. These results show a considerable prevalence of this disease in the canine population of these two districts. This should be particularly important due to the zoonotic characteristics of the disease

Virtualization technology allows several virtual machines to be created from a single hardware structure. With virtualized computational systems increasing utilization, demand for efficient management of this sort of resource also grows. Network management tools currently available do not manage virtual systems efficiently, because specific issues related to virtual resources, such as processor, memory, disk and network, are not considered. Development of a genericMIB not only provides an efficient tool for virtual machines management but also adds other advantages, such as more management flexibility as well as interoperability among different virtual systems. This work proposes a independentMIB to be used for management of both virtual machines and virtual machine monitors. This virtual MIB (vMIB) was created based on the structures of MIB-II and SMI (Structure Management Information) specification and was validated using the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) protocol.

Abstract:
A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology: Diagnostic Radiography in the Faculty of Health and Wellness Sciences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2012
Complete, accurate and justified radiological examination requests are prerequisite to radiological exposures. However, global research shows evidence of high numbers of incomplete and inaccurate requests as well as that up to 77% radiological exposures are unjustified. Plain lumbar spine and plain skull radiology examinations are reported as being procedures that generate high dose and a low diagnostic yield. This study was designed to objectively measure the completeness, accuracy and justification of these two examinations in an effort to make inferences that will contribute to an improved radiology service. This research could therefore have positive effects on optimisation of radiation protection in Zimbabwe. Methodology A non participatory prospective descriptive analytical document review of quota sampled radiological request forms for 200 plain skull and 200 plain lumbar spine examinations was employed. Data was captured using structured data collection instruments designed and tested by the researcher for this study. The instrument was designed using the IAEA-HHS4 (2010) minimum prescribed request data as a framework and adding additional form fields found to be relevant through a review of all identified radiological request template forms in use at the research site. Data analysis involved central tendency measures and inferential statistics. Results: The central tendency demonstrated for the two examinations was that generally referrers for plain lumbar spine and for plain skull radiology would respectively provide 38.9 +/- 0.6% and 40.2+/-0.5% overall examination request information. This information was significantly below expectation. There was however no significant difference between the samples’ means for the two examinations. The tendency demonstrated in patient information for lumbar spine and skull requests was that generally referrers would respectively provide 48.4 +/- 0.8% and 49.5+/- 0.8% patient information. These values were inclusive of each other and they were significantly (p=0.00 Sig.) below expectation. There was however no significant difference between the two examinations’ data. The tendency demonstrated for examination information was that referrers for the research site would generally provide 29.8+/-0.8% (lumbar) and 32.6+/-0.8% (Skull) examination information. These values were significantly (p=0.000 Sig.) below expectation and demonstrated a significant difference between the sample means for the two examinations. With respect to referrer information, the tendency demonstrated was that generally referrers for plain lumbar spine and for plain skull examinations would respectively provide 38+/- 1% and 38.5 +/- 0.8% referrer identification information. These were significantly below expectation (p= 0.000 Sig.) but there was no significant difference between the samples’ means with respect to referrer information. With respect to accuracy of request data, it was observed that 5% plain lumbar spine and 3% plain skull requests were specific in so far as information documented on request forms could unambiguously identify the area to be imaged. It was also observed that 22.5% (lumbar spine) and 12% (skull) examination requests were indicated and therefore justified. All requests forms were found to be legible. Conclusions: Generally, referrers to this research site tend to provide incomplete, inaccurate and unjustified radiological request data. The observed levels of completeness, accuracy and justification of requests were generally consistent between the two examinations relative to expectation. These levels had medico-legal implications and negative effects on optimisation of radiation protection to patients. Further research to establish causes of this variance in referral behaviour is recommended. The researcher also recommends further research to establish whether there is an association between requested examination and completeness, accuracy and justification of diagnostic radiology examination requests. Keywords: Radiation protection, radiological request, complete request, accurate request, justified request, plain skull imaging, plain lumbar spine imaging.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The following essay presents a proposal for the development of a portal meant to support teaching and learning processes in grade 9 and 10, within the subject areas of “Introduction to Information and Communication Technologies” (ITIC) and “Information and Communication Technologies” (TIC). This proposal was developed as a follow up of various projects implemented nationwide aiming the inclusion and acceptation of new information technologies in schools of non higher education subsystems and it intends to be a complementary teaching instrument and aid for students, teachers and parents, in the referred subject area, going beyond time and space of the class room boundaries. The use of computers in educational settings associated to different subject areas taught in elementary and secondary education has been growing, as a consequence of the will and knowledge of some teachers that tended to post online curriculum items, with the purpose to support even more their students and enabling them to revise or learn once more those items, in their own time and rhythm. Many internet sites, with educational vocation, do not tend to follow a specific structure capable to answer to user expectations or even appropriate to use inside a class room. In order to adjust and adequately response to users’ needs, the project was developed based on a User Centered Design methodological approach, moment in which students, specialists and parents followed and evaluated the different stages of the project. The presented proposal is composed of a repository of specific items of the subject area curriculum, a group of synchronous and asynchronous communication services and it also has a variety of relevant information topics of the subject area for students, teachers and parents. With the aid of a survey on similar projects online, it was possible to identify a specific number of items to be taken into consideration for this project, and they were discussed with the users, that enabled the creation of a structure accepted by the target public and consequently empowered the promotion of teaching and learning processes mediated by technology. The methodology that was used to develop and evaluate the proposed prototype allows the structure and the model presented, for this system, to be able to self adjust to other subject areas, despite knowing that this specific subject area (TIC) promotes interaction, a nearly intrinsic relation with the equipment, once it is simultaneously the instrument and subject of teaching, different from other subject areas that do not have this intrinsic relation.

Mouhli, Makram. "ANALYSIS AND SHAPE MODELING OF THIN PIEZOELECTRIC ACTUATORS." VCU Scholars Compass, 2005. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
The field of smart materials is an increasingly growing area of research. In aerodynamics applications especially, transducers have to fulfill a series of requirements such as light weight, size, energy consumption, robustness and durability. Piezoelectric transducers, devices which transform an electrical signal into motion, fulfill many of these requirements. Specifically, piezoelectric composites are of interest due to their added toughness and ease of integration into a structure. Resulting composites have a characteristic initial curvature with accompanying residual stresses that are responsible for enhanced performance, relative to flat actuators, when the active material is energized. A number of transducer designs based on composites have been developed. Two of these piezoelectric composites called Thunder® and Lipca are analyzed. Thunder is a composite of steel, polyimide adhesive, PZT, polyimide adhesive, and aluminum; and Lipca is a composite of fiberglass epoxy, carbon/epoxy, PZT, and fiberglass epoxy.Room temperature shapes of circular and rectangular Thunder® and Lipca actuators are predicted by using the Rayleigh-Ritz model. This technique is based on the assumption that the stable geometric configuration developed in the actuator after manufacturing, is the configuration that minimizes the total potential energy. This energy is a function of the displacement field which can be approximated by two functions, a four term model, and a twenty-three term model. The coefficients in the models are determined by minimizing the total potential energy of the actuator. The actuator deformations are assumed to obey the Kirchhoff hypothesis and the actuator layers are assumed to be in the state of plane stress. The four coefficient model produces results not comparable to three-dimensional surface topology maps. The twenty-three coefficient model however, is shown to have generally good agreement with the data for all studied actuators. To quantify the difference, at the cross section of each actuator, a profile is fitted by using a quadratic equation obtaining regression coefficients above 99%. For all actuators, the error between experimental and the calculated centerline data is less than 6%. For the 6R model however, the error is approximately 25%. One of the possible reasons for the error may be the tolerance of the thickness of the PZT layer. By changing the PZT thickness ±6% of the nominal value, over predicts the experimental dome height by 20%. Another possible reason for the discrepancy is the thickness of the actuator, thicker than all actuators used in this study, which might contradict the validity of the thin actuator assumption. Furthermore, by calculating the side-length-to-thickness ratio, 115 in this case, as stated by Aimmanee & Hyer (2004), may cause instability, and could result in unexpected behavior. The neutral axis position, calculated by using a force balance at equilibrium under the assumption of pure bending, for all actuators used in this study is determined and compared to the ceramic layer position. The results indicated that for all Thunder® models the neutral axis is located below the ceramic layer indicating that the PZT wafer may be in total tension. For the Lipca C2 device however, the neutral axis is found to be above the ceramic layer, indicating that the piezoelectric layer may be in total compression.Strain fields are also predicted with contradicting results when compared to the theory that the ceramic is in tension in the Thunder actuators. The contradiction on the strain calculations can be explained by the manner the strain field is derived: by differentiating and squaring the high-order polynomials of the approximated displacement component losing accuracy when it comes to predicting normal and shear strains. The Rayleigh-Ritz technique can become a tool to perform parametric studies of the key elements for manufacturing to optimize specific features of the actuators.

In this thesis, we review basic properties of linear codes and lattices with a certain focus on their interplay. In particular, we focus on the analogous con- structions of cyclic codes and cyclic lattices. We start out with a brief overview of the basic theory and properties of linear codes. We then demonstrate the construction of cyclic codes and emphasize their importance in error-correcting coding theory. Next we survey properties of lattices, focusing on algorithmic lattice problems, exhibit the construction of cyclic lattices and discuss their applications in cryptography. We emphasize the similarity and common prop- erties of the two cyclic constructions.

Abstract:
We have developed a game-theory based prediction tool, named Preana, based on a promising model developed by Professor Bruce Beuno de Mesquita. The first part of this work is dedicated to exploration of the specifics of Mesquita's algorithm and reproduction of the factors and features that have not been revealed in literature. In addition, we have developed a learning mechanism to model the players' reasoning ability when it comes to taking risks. Preana can predict the outcome of any issue with multiple stake-holders who have conflicting interests in economic, business, and political sciences. We have utilized game theory, expected utility theory, Median voter theory, probability distribution and reinforcement learning. We were able to reproduce Mesquita's reported results and have included two case studies from his publications and compared his results to that of Preana. We have also applied Preana on Iran's 2013 presidential election to verify the accuracy of the prediction made by Preana.

Kramer, Eli Orner. "The Principles of Philosophical Community." OpenSIUC, 2018. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/1552.

Full text
Abstract:
There are three central orientations, or modes, forming a “tripod” as it were, that grounds philosophy as a cultural activity. The two commonly known modes are, first philosophical geniuses who make models of reality in their “solitary burrows” (such as a Kant and Peirce); and, second, philosophical wanderers who have an embodied praxis, performing wisdom wherever they travel (such as Diogenes of Sinope and Takuan Soho). There is however another primary and largely neglected mode of philosophy which is mutually reinforced ethical praxis rooting in a shared cosmopolitan place. In this dissertation, I characterize and defend the neglected mode of philosophy, that I call “philosophical community,” by describing the constellation of metaethical principles — general, axiological, cultural, and dialectical — that articulate and promote its values. My philosophical methodology is radically empirical philosophy of culture. The principles will be drawn from an interpretation of the whole of philosophical communal experience, considered diachronically, or globally and historically. These principles are then organized as a synchronic (present focused) coordinate whole. By “principle,” at the very least, I mean a hypothetical ground presupposed in successful inquiry. I take “community” in the broad, Roycean spirit of those relationships that build an increasing determinacy of meaning in the universe, (i.e. a community of interpretation). A philosophical community, then, is not reducible to a collection of people but can be thought of as made of a special kind of community of interpretation, as it shares some sort of place. Taken together, this constellation of principles can help us refine for ourselves a vision of the best of philosophical community life, which should also help us frame a new “brocard” for this mode of philosophy in the twenty-first century.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Although the public understands that participation in clinical research is necessary to advance the knowledge and skills of medical science, the rates of participation have been demonstrated to be trending downwards. Inadequate participation rates can have dramatic scientific and economic effects that ultimately affect the advancement of science. The attitudes and reasons for participation and non-participation in clinical research have been examined by a multitude of researchers. However, willingness to participate research is typically focused on a narrow range of populations, that is those diagnosed with an illness or disease and minority populations. The purpose of this study is to examine the demographic and knowledge factors which influence community-dwelling young adults' attitudes, as the future generation of clinical research volunteers, towards willingness to participate in clinical research. Knowing which factors are associated with young adults' attitudes and intention of willingness to participate will be of benefit to those who conduct research by identifying and rectifying barriers to participation. Quantitative data, in the form of a one-time questionnaire administered by a paper and pencil instrument, were collected from a purposive sample of Grade 12 (seniors) students recruited from Iowa public high schools. My findings suggest that knowledge, acquired both by formal education and informal education, was associated with behavioral beliefs and attitudes about clinical research in this sample of students as a precursor to being willing to participate in clinical research. Fewer demographic factors, such as gender, race/ethnicity, or socioeconomic status, were associated with the behavioral beliefs and attitudes measures. This is excellent news to those who conduct research as informational factors may be changed. Aiming interventions at informing young adults about clinical research process and procedures may be of benefit to attitude formation with hopes to impact future enrollment in clinical research. Media, as a method of informal education, may be of use as a way to provide information.

Abstract:
Few studies have investigated the relationship between diet quality and health-related quality of life (HRQOL), especially in the older adult population that is most at risk for poor diet and health. Self-perceived HRQOL is a more powerful predictor of morbidity and mortality than objective measures of health. The aim of this thesis was to examine the association between nutrition-related factors (especially diet quality) and HRQOL in community-dwelling older adults aged 60 and above. This research used cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 cycles to select and include diet quality variables, meal-related variables, and other relevant covariates in regression models, which predicted HRQOL measures in a nationally representative sample of older adults (n=3,692). The analysis of the association between diet quality and HRQOL and the adjustment for covariates was performed with logistic regression using SAS (Statistical Analysis Software), version 9.4. All analyses were weighted using appropriate NHANES weights so that findings were nationally representative. Compared to older adults in the lowest quartile for Healthy-Eating Index (HEI) scores, older adults in the highest quartile for HEI scores had 2.4 times greater odds of good or better HRQOL compared with fair or poor HRQOL (95% CI 1.55 to 3.56, p

Abstract:
The federal government established nutrition assistance programs such as the School Breakfast Program and school districts have implemented Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) to improve participation rates, yet millions of low-income children do not partake in these programs. Thus, many school districts are failing to meet the nutritional needs of the low-income population, which can have negative effects on a child's healthy development. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to observe and explore teachers' perspectives regarding school breakfast implementation in a small school district in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Research questions examined experiences with implementation, benefits and challenges to the program, and how children's needs are impacted based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the theoretical framework for this study. Data from the research participants' interviews, journals, and classroom observations were coded, themes were identified, and triangulation occurred to answer the research questions. Findings indicated changes need to be made with food portions, food options, food quality, the logistics of implementation, and outreach efforts. Recommendations included changing equipment, providing equal amounts of food, evaluating food options and quality, providing clean up supplies, and educating parents on BIC. Stakeholders addressing these challenges can increase support and participation rates in the program, leading to positive social change. Implications for positive social change include reduced state costs associated with hunger, decreased food insecurity for low-income families, improved behaviors in the classroom, and improved support of the physiological, safety, and socialization needs of children.

The research concerned with the aim of this study, was to assess the appli-cation of intelligence-driven investigation in combating organised motor vehicle theft. The strategic intelligence plan, information sharing and understanding of or-ganised vehicle theft, are some of approaches which will assist in dealing with the challenge of the illegal sale of vehicles and vehicle parts. There is indeed a need to address police corruption, if the battle against vehicle theft is to be realised. The objectives of this study were the following: to explain the strategic intelli-gence plan for investigating motor vehicle theft; to evaluate whether investiga-tions of organised motor vehicle theft in Thohoyandou cluster are intelligence-driven; to assess if the cluster uses intelligence offender profiling in investi-gations; to explore how intelligence-driven investigation assists in information sharing; and, to make recommendations for the improvement of intelligence-driven vehicle theft investigation. The researcher wanted to apply new research knowledge, in order to develop good practice in the field. This has been done by recommending new proced-ures to enhance performance and to improve the ways and means of combating organised vehicle theft. KEY TERMS Intelligence-driven investigation; strategic intelligence; intelligence cycle; crime investigations; modus operandi; offender profiling; organised crime; systems theory; motor vehicle theft; information sharing.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I first briefly examine the history of technology as it impacts on literacy practices, and especially the history of resistance to technological developments in the humanities. In so doing, I also briefly examine some of the possible ideological underpinnings of this resistance, including looking at some of the arguments proposed to counter it. More specifically, I consider how literacy practices, pedagogical practices, and assessment and gatekeeping practices in the field of composition studies impact on and are impacted by the intersection of computer technologies and our field. Finally, I offer some suggestions for ways in which our pedagogical practices may need to be reconsidered in light of changes in how we communicate. In particular, I propose guidelines for writing teachers to help negotiate the transitional period between traditional and neo-traditional forms, bridging the gaps between existing standards for producing print documents and as yet undetermined standards required by new forms. That is, I present guidelines that I hope, rather than stifle change, can help guide authors in determining which existing standards make sense for new new forms, and which need to be reconsidered, thereby providing the flexibility necessary to cope with change. Because it is imperative that we consider the effect of our teaching of writing and reading on the further development of these technologies, as well as the effect of further development of these technologies on our teaching and study of writing and reading, I also suggest ways we may need to rethink the academy, including the position of the composition classroom itself.

Abstract:
Information Communication Technology (ICT) can provide innovative learning experiences, but in all cases a great deal depends upon the teacher to provide the context to make this possible. This study focuses on the role of teachers and their needs in embedding Information Communication Technologies into the curriculum in a Tasmanian Government Senior Secondary College. The purpose of the study was to explore what support and encouragement teachers need to successfully incorporate ICTs into the curriculum. In particular, it looks at what motivates teachers to change their practice, in what ways their practice changes and what support is essential for that change to be lasting and worthwhile.Three learning areas were selected for the study, LOTE, English, and Mathematics. There were a total of eleven teachers plus the researcher and eight classes of students. The majority of data collected was qualitative in the form of documents, interview and observations. Quantitative data was collected mainly through surveys. The study focused on the following key elements required for teachers to embed ICTs into the curriculum:1) The role of management;2) The role of teachers (pedagogical, technical);3) Requirements for technical assistance;4) Time allocation; and5) Professional development.Resulting from the study are a series of recommendations for education departments, Principals, ICT managers and teachers to assist them in implement the embedding of ICTs into the curriculum.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the theoretical and empirical evidence for a relationship between corporate social performance (CSP) and financial characteristics. An empirical analysis is performed to examine the Australian evidence for such a relationship, from a financial asset perspective. CSP data provided by Corporate Monitor Pty. Ltd. are used in the analysis. Specifically, available measures of environmental, social and governance performance of 237 Australian companies are compared with selected financial asset characteristics, including firm size, book-to-market value, financial performance and risk, covering the period between July 1997 and August 2003. Evidence of relationships is sought using bivariate correlations, group comparisons and multivariate regression models. The analysis allows for heterogeneity in CSP-financial characteristics relationships, related to firm size, trading history and industry. Findings indicate that governance performance is most strongly related to characteristics, followed by social performance, whereas environmental is in general not strongly or consistently related to financial characteristics. Very strong and consistent evidence is found of a negative relationship between risk and all categories of CSP, although such relationships are again strongest for corporate governance. Strong evidence is found of a positive relationship between financial performance and governance performance (and to a certain extent social-performance), which is concentrated among recently listed companies, large companies and constituents of an industry group containing banks, diversified financials, insurance companies and telecommunication companies. Environmental and social performance is found to be contingent on size and industry, whereas governance performance is found to be contingent predominantly on size. However, the causes of the relationships between environmental and social performance and size are suggested to be different from the causes of the relationships between governance performance and size.
