Abstract:
New arylpicolinate herbicide chemistry under development for rice, aquatic weed management, and other uses was evaluated using five aquatic plants. The herbicide 4-amino-3-chloro-6-(4-chloro-2-fluoro-3-methoxyphenyl)-5-fluoro-pyridine-2-benzyl ester—also identified as XDE-848 BE or SX-1552 (proposed International Organization for Standardization common name in review; active tradename RinskorTM)—and its acid form (XDE-848 acid or SX-1552A) were evaluated on three dicots: (1) Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM), (2) megalodonta, and (3) crested floating heart (CFH), and two monocots: (1) hydrilla and (2) elodea. A small-scale Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) protocol developed using EWM for registration studies was utilized. EWM and megalodonta were also evaluated in larger-scale mesocosms for comparison. In-water concentrations between 0.01 and 243 μg ai L−1as SX-1552 or SX-1552A were applied under static conditions for 14 (growth chamber) or 28 d (mesocosm). EWM was susceptible to both SX-1552 and SX-1552A, with dry-weight 50% effective concentration (EC50) values of 0.11 and 0.23 μg ai L−1under growth chamber conditions. Megalodonta had EC50values of 11.3 and 14.5 μg ai L−1for the SX-1552 and SX-1552A. CFH was more sensitive to SX-1552 (EC50= 5.6 μg ai L−1) than to SX-1552A (EC50= 23.9 μg ai L−1). Hydrilla had EC50values of 1.4 and 2.5 μg ai L−1, whereas elodea was more tolerant, with EC50values of 6.9 and 13.1 μg ai L−1for SX-1552 and SX-1552A, respectively. For EWM mesocosm trials, EC50values for SX-1552 and 1552A were 0.12 μg ai L−1and 0.58 μg ai L−1, whereas the megalodonta EC50was 6.1 μg ai L−1. Activity of SX-1552 on EWM, hydrilla, and CFH merits continued investigation for selective aquatic weed control properties. Results suggest that the OECD protocol can be used to screen activity of herbicides for multiple aquatic plant species.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Abstract:The kingdom of Allada in the seventeenth century was an important supplier of slaves for the trans-Atlantic trade, and also an object of Christian missionary activity, but the earlier history of its interactions with Europeans is poorly documented. It has previously been assumed that the first direct Portuguese contact with the Allada area occurred in 1553. However, recently discovered documents in Portuguese archives correct this view. These comprise two petitions to the King of Portugal from an ambassador of the King of Allada currently in Lisbon: although undated, the content of one of them enables it to be dated to either 1544 or 1555, more probably the former; given the time which the ambassador had already spent in Portugal, his original dispatch from Allada occurred in 1540/1541 or 1551/1552. The petitions document the Allada king’s interest in the establishment of a Christian church in his realm, as well as commercial relations.

Abstract:
The biographical data about the life of deacon Coresi (Coressius) are extremely few and it has been admitted, after many debates, studies and analyses, that he was from Târgoviște, it is supposed that he joined a school in Slavonic at Dealu Monastery, and that he was the owner of a printing press, yet standing out as a skillful printing master. It is also known that he had a son, called Șerban, whom he taught the art of the printing press. The name of deacon Coresi is mentioned in the books he had printed in Brașov (during two periods: 1556-1557; 1560-1583, at irregular intervals), Târgoviște (1557-1558), Alba Iulia (1567-1568) and SasSebeș (1580), during five great periods (1556-1558, 1559-1565, 1566-1570, 1571-1577, 1578-1583), in Romanian and Slavonic. Thus, by his activity, deacon Coresi contributed to the introduction of the Romanian language in the cult of the Orthodox Church of the Romanian Countries, but also in the use of the princely administrative offices of the extra-Carpathian Romanian Countries.

Abstract:
After decades of suffering and agony, Catholicism in Augsburg entered a phase of gradual recovery around 1550. The first half of the sixteenth century was characterised by the rapid expansion of the Reformation and the marginalisation of the Catholics in the town. At the zenith of Protestant predominance, the Lutherans even managed to force the entire Catholic clergy into exile from 1537 to 1547 and for a few months in 1552. The episcopate of Cardinal Otto Truchsess von Waldburg (1543-73), however, marked a turning point for Catholics in Augsburg. The Peace of Augsburg (1555) conceded political parity to the Catholic minority in town. Due to Otto von Waldburg's zealous activities, his severely decimated flock even managed to grow again slowly over the years.

Abstract:
Abstract Abstract 1127 The timely activation of prothrombin (II) to thrombin (IIa) by the prothrombinase (IIase) complex is required for the maintenance of hemostasis. The IIase complex is composed of the enzyme factor Xa (fXa) and the cofactor factor Va (fVa) assembled on a membrane surface in the presence of divalent ions. While fXa alone is capable of activating II, the incorporation of fVa into the IIase complex results in a 300,000-fold increase in the catalytic efficiency of fXa for IIa formation. FVa is generated following limited proteolysis of factor V (fV) by IIa at Arg709, Arg1018, and Arg1545, releasing a heavy chain (residues 1–709) and light chain (residues 1546–2196) that associate noncovalently through divalent ions. The A3 domain of the light chain of fVa has been implicated in the interaction of the cofactor with fXa. To determine the contribution of the A3 domain of fVa to IIase assembly and function, synthetic peptides representing residues 1546–1612 were screened for their ability to inhibit IIase. The peptide representing residues 1546–1558 strongly inhibited IIase with an IC50 of 50 μM. Additional fluorometric studies with overlapping pentapeptides from that region revealed that amino acids 1553–1558 were responsible for the observed inhibition. To verify the data from the overlapping pentapeptide studies, site-directed mutagenesis was used to generate a fVa mutant molecule with amino acids 1549–1558 deleted (fVaLCD1). FVaLCD1 demonstrated greatly reduced clotting activity in two-stage clotting assays. Gel electrophoresis of the IIase catalyzed activation of II using fVaLCD1 revealed a 50% reduction in the rate of prothrombin consumption. IIase assembled with fVaLCD1 exhibited a 5-fold increase in the apparent disassociation constant (Kdapp) for the enzyme-cofactor interaction and a 50% reduction in the turnover number (kcat) for the enzyme. To investigate the possibility that amino acids 1549–1558 are important for procofactor activation, the fVaLCD1 mutant was incubated with IIa and visualized with gel electrophoresis. The fVaLCD1 mutant exhibited a greatly reduced rate of IIa catalyzed activation. Additional recombinant fVa molecules with overlapping alanine mutations within the amino acid region 1548–1559 revealed that amino acids 1554–1555 were responsible for the observed effects in fVaLCD1. The recombinant fVa molecule with amino acids 1554–1555 mutated to alanines (fVaAA) demonstrated a greatly reduced clotting activity, an 8-fold increase in the Kdapp for the enzyme-cofactor interaction, and a 50% reduction in the kcat for the enzyme. To further investigate the mutational robustness of fVa against mutations in amino acids 1554–1555, a recombinant fVa molecule with both tyrosine residues in that region mutated conservatively to phenylalanines (fVaFF) was created. The more conservative fVaFF mutant, which differed from fVaWT only in the absence of side-chain hydroxyl moieties, exhibited normal clotting activity, kinetics, and procofactor activation. Altogether, the data demonstrate that amino acids 1554–1555 from the N-terminal region of the fVa light chain are important for IIase assembly and function because they constitute an interactive site for IIa and fXa. Abstract:
AbstractIvan the Terrible loved hunting but between 1548 and 1564 he seems not to have indulged his favorite pastime. An anonymous English account written 1556-1558 says that Ivan had given hunting up for religious reasons. Three Russian texts written between 1550 and 1563, an entry in the Nikon Chronicle for 1556-1557 which praises Ivan for abstaining from hunting to become a true pastor of his flock, the Domostroi, a book of household management, and two vitae in the Stepennaia kniga tsarskogo rodosloviia (Book of Degrees of Imperial Genealogy), contain diatribes against the cruelty and immorality of hunting. These texts echo a minority anti-hunting tradition in medieval and early modern Europe. As in Europe hunting continued unabated, but in Muscovy it is possible that the anti-hunting animus of these texts inspired at least one temporary convert, Ivan the Terrible himself.

Abstract:
Abstract This work focuses on the effectiveness of using four-wave mixing (FWM) in restoring the corrupted signal as well as the factors that affect the quality of the data. The method was based on the two-stage FWM-based optical wavelength converter designed using a OptiSystem version 18.0. The signal regeneration for both stages has taken place in the highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) having length of 1.0 km and 0.8 km respectively. The first stage is to convert and restore a signal carrying NRZ formatted data at 1552 nm into a new wavelength of 1548 nm. While the second stage is to transfer the data back into the original wavelength of 1552 nm. It has been found that the quality of the data (Q-factor) is affected by the power of modulated signal (1552 nm) as well as the power of unmodulated pump source (1550 nm). The maximum Q-factor of 29.6 at 6 dBm signal power and of 35.7 at 16 dBm pump power have been achieved here. The wavelength spacing between those two sources also affect the quality of regenerated signal. The optimum quality value is found to be above 25 when the spacing is 1 nm regardless of the signal and pump power values.

Abstract:
This paper describes design, theoretical analysis, and experimental evaluation of a π-Phase-Shifted Fiber Bragg Grating (π-PSFBG) inscribed in the standard telecom fiber for slow light generation. At first, the grating was designed for its use in the reflection mode with a central wavelength of 1552 nm and a pass band width of less than 100 pm. The impact of fabrication imperfections was experimentally investigated and compared to model predictions. The optical spectra obtained experimentally show that the spectral region used for slow light generation is narrower (less than 10 pm), thus allowing for too-low levels of slow light optical-output power. In the next step, the optimization of the grating design was conducted to account for fabrication errors, to improve the grating’s spectral behavior and its temporal performance, and to widen the spectral interval for slow light generation in the grating’s transmission mode. The targeted central wavelength was 1553 nm. The π-PSFBG was then commercially fabricated, and the achieved parameters were experimentally investigated. For the region of (1551–1554) nm, a 15-fold increase in the grating’s pass band width was achieved. We have shown that a pair of retarded optical pulses were generated. The measured group delay was found to be ~10.5 ps (compared to 19 ps predicted by the model). The π-PSFBG operating in its transmission mode has the potential to operate as tunable delay line for applications in RF photonics, ultra-fast signal processing, and optical communications, where tunable high precision delay lines are highly desirable. The π-PSFBG can be designed and used for the generation of variable group delays from tens to hundreds of ps, depending on application needs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The paper publishes an icon of the Virgin Hodegetria, a Royal Door, and two parts of an epistyle with the Deesis scene. This group of works, which once decorated the iconostasis in the Church of Saint George Mouzeviki (c. 1550-1560) in Kastoria, belongs to the creative opus of the painter Anthony (zographos Antonios), known for his work at Mount Athos (1537-1552). The paper also argues that the frescoes in the Church of St. George, preserved in fragments and in a poor state of repair, can also be attributed to the same artist.

Abstract:
Nowa parafia została utworzona w wyniku wydzielenia jej z obszaru parafii mstowskiej. Przyłączono do niej trzy wsie królewskie sąsiadujące z miastem. W erekcji olsztyńskiej parafii widać efekt kompromisu. W zamian za wyłączenie części obszaru z parafii mstowskiej przekazano zakonnikom patronat nad kościołem, z którego ustąpił król, będący właścicielem miasta. Prawo prezenty zostało ograniczone do jednego z braci konwentu.

Abstract:
In this paper, the author attempted to analyse the issues related to the ownership and management of Samarkand and adjacent territories during the reign of the Sheybanids dynasty. In the research work, the specific aspects of the dynastic management in Samarkand were studied based on the local sources, written during the reign of the Sheybanids and Ashtarkhanids, diaries of the ambassadors and travellers, and modern historians. According to the sources, during XVI century Samarkand was ruled by descendants of four sons of Abulkhayrkhan, an outstanding representative of the Sheybanids dynasty. These were the descendants of Shah Budag in 1500-1510, in 1512-1552 and 1556-1572 – descendants of Kuchkunchikhan, in 1552-1556 – descendants of Suyuchkhuja, and in 1578-1598 – the descendants of Khuja Muhammad Sultan, who had the opportunity of ruling Samarkand. From this point of view, the article analyses the administration of Samarkand region based on the specific features of this era by conditionally dividing it into three periods. Similarly to the period of reign of Timurids, during the first period – 1500-1541 the city was the centre of Maveraunnahr, the capital of the Sheybanids state; in the second period, 1541-1578, Samarkand was an independent khanate together with the territories around it; in the third period of 1578-1598 – it was a large region in the Bukhara khanate with no status of the political centre. This paper studies the history of administration of Samarkand by the Sheybanids dynasty by such division into periods and on the basis of the information in the sources and scientific literature.

Abstract:
[Rev. of: Verner I. V. The Interlinear Slavonic-Greek Psalter of 1552 Translated by Maximus the Greek. Moscow: Indrik, 2019, 928 pp. (in Russian)] The article offers a review of the study and publication of Maximus the Greek's 1552 translation of the Psalter. This translation, which has remained in manuscripts until now, is viewed as part of the European biblical revision, ialongside other well-known Renaissance translations and editions of the Holy Scriptures. The Church Slavonic-Greek Psalter of 1552 is a monument at once to Byzantine-Slavic, European-Slavic, and inter-Slavic cultural and linguistic ties of the early Modern period. The edition contains an exemplary linguistic and textological description of the Psalter of 1552 which clearly highlights the stages of Maximus the Greek's work on the text, reveals his methods using handwritten and printed sources in different languages, and explicates the translation technique of the Athos scholar. The book identifies the printed Greek original of the Psalter of 1552, which turns out to be the 1498 edition of Justin Decadius. The second part of the book contains a critical edition of the Psalter of 1552 based on the interlinear manuscript of the Russian State Library (RSL f. 173.I # 8) incorporating variant readings of six copies studied. The Greek part of the interlinear manuscript is presented in accordance with its specific Slavonic spelling. This book is a major contribution to paleoslavistics and to the research on biblical studies in Early Modern Russia.

Abstract:
An unpublished notice in the records of the confraternity of San Giovanni Battista detta dello Scalzo reveals that Benvenuto Cellini initiated a bid for membership in the company in 1557. Although Cellini seems an unlikely confratello, membership in a confraternity would have proved especially attractive to him during the difficult times he faced from 1555 to 1559. Sponsored by Roberto di Filippino Lippi, Cellini shared professional and social ties with several of the company’s members, and he may have hoped that his affiliation with the confraternity would improve his position in Florence, which had deteriorated after 1555. Cellini, beset by legal troubles and convicted a second time for sodomy in 1557, did not follow through on his initial acceptance into the organization.

Abstract:
This article examines the factors that influenced the creation of the first Russian (so-called “anonymous”) printing press around 1553. The article shows that the first attempts to introduce printing took place as early as the 1540s (as seen in the Hans Schlitte mission and in a letter from Ivan IV to the Danish King Christian III). Thus the Sloglav Council (1551) or the conquest of Kazan (1552) could not be the immediate reasons for the introduction of printing in Russia. The direct reason was the need to standardize church service books. The article argues that the production of printed books in Russia also greatly accelerated as a result of the fire in Moscow in 1547, which destroyed an enormous quantity of books in the libraries in the capital. The capacities of the existing scriptoria in Moscow at the time were insufficient to restore quickly the large quantities of books lost in the fire. It became necessary to employ new methods for replacing the lost books (first and foremost, liturgical books). This study is based in a wide range of sources, including materials connected with the so-called “Viskovatyi Affair,” chronicles, the Tale of the Moscow Fire of 1547, the Book of Degrees, marginalia and other inscriptions found in some books, inventories compiled by the scribal staffs in chanceries, the colophon of the 1564 Apostol, and other sources.

Abstract:
Et faictes que toujours j'espieD'oeil veillant les secretz des cieulx.(Ode à Michel de I'Hospital)The Odes of 1550 and 1552 reveal Pierre de Ronsard's ambition to gain entry into the court of Henri II. In the 1550 preface to the Odes, Ronsard does not make the slightest effort to veil his literary and political objectives. He presents his Odes as a poetic challenge to Clément Marot's psalm translations of 1541 and 1543 with the discovery of an equally ancient lyric source, pagan rather than Hebraic, and he mounts an ad hominem attack on the court poet Mellin de Saint-Gelais in order to win Henri's favor. The poetry, however, places in evidence other preoccupations. The Odes describe and problematize the endless wanderings of a poetic subject who seeks to uncover the secrets not only of the ancient world but of the modern one as well.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThis essay argues that John Donne’s “Satyre II” (ca. 1595) has a greater topical relevance to the emergence of the Anglo-American common-law tradition than literary and legal scholars have previously recognized. It makes the case that the villain of Donne’s poem, the poet-turned-lawyer Coscus, may be Sir Edward Coke (1552–1634) and that two female figures in the poem may be Queen Elizabeth (r. 1558–1603). Donne attacks Coke and Elizabeth for their complicity in deploying an antiquated and backward-looking feudal ideal in order to lend prestige to the common law, to enrich the crown and its officers, and to frustrate the dynastic prospects of landholding gentry.
