Abstract:
Supposes, based on Ludovico Ariosto’s Suppositi, found its way into print twice during George Gascoigne’s lifetime: first, in A Hundreth Sundrie Flowres (1573); then, in The Posies of George Gascoigne, a 1575 revised version of Flowres. In Posies’s prefatory letters, Gascoigne presents the collection as the ‘undoubted proof’ of his reformation, advertising the ‘morall discourses and reformed inventions’ it harbours. Recent criticism questions these claims, arguing for the marginality and inconsistency of Gascoigne's revisions, yet gives little consideration in this respect to the actual works

Rodrigo Caro (1573-1647) has long been considered an unreliable witness of the epigraphic tradition, first and foremost by E. Hübner (CIL II). This article reconsiders his role in the transmission of the Conventus Hispalensis’ falsae vel incertae, after a careful analysis of Caro’s Antigüedades de Sevilla (1634). Within this work, the Sevillian humanist overall appears to be scrupulous: it is only his duty to superior interests, such as those of the archbishopric of Seville, which forces him (as in his defense of the pseudo-Dexter) to reluctantly retain certain falsae included in the Antigüeda

George Gascoigne, the most enterprising figure among England’s first generation of would-be professional poets, exploits to its fullest extent the tradition of reading for the author’s intent. This is true preeminently of his two Tudor poetry collections, which at every turn invite speculation about authorship to provoke—and frustrate, and manipulate, and reward—the reader’s textual experience. This chapter explores in particular the central role of Gascoigne’s autoreferential rhetoric in his trio of letters prefacing the second poetry collection, which together work to establish the fiction o
