Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The Examen de ingenios para las sciencias, published in 1575 for the Spanish physician Juan Huarte de San Juan (1529/1530-1588), was a bold attempt to apply the principles of Galenic naturalism to a better understanding of human capabilities. Inevitably, the work also touched upon a number of theological issues, especially the delicate question of the interplay between natural abilities and supernatural gifts. When the treatise was included in the Portuguese Index of 1581, and then in the Spanish Indexes of 1583 and 1584, Huarte was allowed to amend some of his positions, as is evident in the second edition published posthumously in 1594. The aim of this article is to shed light on the identity of an ‘expurgated’ book by concentrating on some of the most significant changes in the Examen triggered by the intervention of the Spanish Inquisition. It will become apparent that Huarte’s response to censorship was not acquiescence or dissembling, but active engagement with the inquisitorial challenge.

Abstract:
In this study, we explore two documents of the Public Library and Regional Archive Luís da Silva Ribeiro, notably, one pension of 1583 and one petition, with a minute of witnesses, of 1584. Both address the privileged Jácome Trigo and fellows, confessed partisans of Philip II, opponents of the rebellion of Terceira in support of D. António. Hunted by the rebellious people and by the sectarian justice of Prior do Crato, the group endures the confiscation of assets, until condemned to death penalty, commuted to exile in England in 1582. Then, as proof of loyalty to the king of Spain, after a dangerous voyage, that costs the life of Jácome Trigo, the band lands in Lisbon, still in time to join the army of the marquis of Santa Cruz, which conquers Terceira in 1583. Besides, with less importance, we recall events, omitting a revision, related with the Iberic Union, for instance, the condescension of the Kingdom and the resistance of Terceira, as well as the noticeable alignment of the social strata, and still the motivations of all trends, of nationalism, to the anti-castilianism or simply the yearning of Sebastianism.

Abstract:

Abstract:
History of Muscovite estate shaping in “German towns” in 1550s–1580s is closely connected with Novgorod, Pskov, Rzheva Pustaya as servicemen communities. These servicemen were the source for new landowners in the lands taken by Muscovites to the West from Narova river. Only Rzheva Pustaya was more or less studied already. The paper is an attempt to generalize the data on number and personal content of “German towns” landowners (mostly on sources of 1582) and to study the issue of the significance of the experience of making estates in Livonian lands for the day-to-day culture of Muscovite servicemen. Geography of Russian landownership in Livonia is under consideration. Also the historiographical discussions of the reasons of Russian Livonia project fail is studied in the article. Special attention is paid to the issue of Muscovite landowners evacuation from Livonia after military defeats of 1580–1582. Record books of Rzheva Pustaya and Novgorod Vodskaya pyatina included notes of the towns and districts in Livonia that have been left by the landowners. Other record books of North-Western Muscovy only mention the new strata of servicemen “new landowners of German towns”. Special groups of “Rugodiv and Juryev newly baptized [tartars]” and “Cossacks from Govye” were also separately mentioned in the record books. In the last period of Livonian War not only Livonia itself but also some border districts of former Novgorod land were left by Muscovites. In 1582–1583 the Moscow Government also took responsibility for the landowners from that lost districts. V. A. Arakcheev noted the order on the land security of those servicemen issued between January 23 and March 4, 1583. In early 1580s the landowners of “German towns” received estates in “abandoned lands”. Later Court lands were spread between them.

Abstract:
He lived in france where his career was proceeding mainly at the court of king henry ii until the saint bartholomew massacre compelled him to leave the country and fly to germany, more especially to strasbourg. His work, a rich one and conspicuous for the exceptional inventiveness of delaune in the matter of forms, may be considered as representative of the classical style of the school of fontainebleau, namely the works of artists like francesco primaticio or luca penni. But at an early stage appear more or less the influence of the lesser german masters (generally called "petits maitres allemands") and later, that of the german mannerism of the second half of the 16th century. Humanism also had an effect on his works the meaning of which often being a complex question. His engravings are generally of very small size ; they concurred to a large extent to the diffusion all over europe until the middle of the 17th century of the forms born of the school of fontainebleau and their influence was particularly important in all the spheres of the decorative arts

Schellekens, Philip. "Making monetary policy : caution, conservatism and the public supply of liquidity." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2000. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1583/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation offers two perspectives on the making of monetary policy under uncertainty. The first two chapters examine the consequences of uncertainty for the macroeconomic function of the central bank - the stabilisation of macroeconomic variables of interest around socially desirable targets. The third chapter examines the consequences of uncertainty for the central bank's microeconomic function - the public supply of liquidity. The first chapter asks whether society benefits from the delegation of monetary policy to cautious and conservative central bankers. We offer a critical view on the delegation literature and relax seemingly innocuous assumptions about uncertainty and preferences. First, caution improves credibility but does not obviate the need for central-bank conservatism. Second, previous models of delegation have focused on suboptimal forms of conservatism. We derive optimal concepts of conservatism that mitigate, or eliminate, any residual problem of credibility. Third, we rationalize why credible monetary policy may be conducive to stable inflation and output. The second chapter examines the implications of instrument uncertainty for optimal monetary policy following the introduction of non-quadratic preferences. We investigate both symmetric and asymmetric preferences and discuss the consequences for caution, gradualism and the optimal delegation of monetary policy. The third chapter examines the microeconomic role of the central bank. We develop a rationale for the provision of public liquidity based on an incomplete contracting framework. The model illustrates to what extent wealth-constrained entrepreneurs are leveraged by collateralized debt contracts and examines the consequences of costly collateral liquidation and aggregate asset price uncertainty for the provision of external finance.

McGinn, Jennifer Sarah. "The vasodilatory and antioxidant activities of polyphenolic substances." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2002. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1583/.

Full text
Abstract:
This project was designed to determine the effect of a wide range of grape and tea based extracts and green tea catechins on vascular tension in vitro, further determine the relationship between their vasodilatory and antioxidant activities and identify the major polyphenols present in green and black tea. Grape and tea based extracts were examined for their vasodilator activity in vitro using standard organ bath pharmacology. All extracts evoked biphasic concentration-dependent relaxation in rabbit aortic vessels. Grape based extracts were significantly better vasodilators than tea based extracts. Previous work by others has shown that grape based products induce vascular relaxation via nitric oxide (NO) and endothelium-dependent mechanisms. This study demonstrated that a range of grape based extracts induced vasorelaxation responses via complex mechanisms including endothelium-dependent and independent mechanisms via vasodilating prostaglandins by way of prostacyclin and endothelial NO production. Tea based extracts on the other hand, induced vasorelaxation via the combined interactions of vasodilating endothelium-dependent prostaglandins. The relationship between the vasodilation capacity, antioxidant activity, based on the reduction of the free Fremy's radical and ferric reducing power, and total phenolic content of each extract was also determined. In general, a significant inverse correlation was identified between the vasodilator abilities of the grape and tea extracts in vitro and their antioxidants activities. This study demonstrates that grape and tea based extracts induce vasorelaxation in isolated rabbit aortic vessels and are effective antioxidants in vitro, within a concentration range that may be reached in vivo by moderate wine and tea consumption. The results presented here also indicate that consumption of green tea may have greater benefits than consumption of black tea in terms of their vasodilatory activity and antioxidant capacity in vitro.

Thijs, Christine Bertina. "Waerferth's Old English translation of the Dialogi of Gregory the Great." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2003. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1583/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the language and the translation technique of Bishop Waeferth's late ninth-century Old English version of Pope Gregory the Great's four books of Dialogi (composed in Latin c. 593) consisting of a large collection of narratives of early Italian saints' miracles. Because King Alfred the Great (871-899), at whose command Werferth is said to have undertaken the work during the wars with the Vikings, appears to have been inspired inter alia by this text to launch his programme of cultural renaissance, the religious and historical background plays an important role for the interpretation of the text. These issues are addressed in the opening chapters, of which the first investigates the surviving evidence of the importance of St Gregory the Great for the Anglo-Saxons in his role of `Apostle of the English', including a brief discussion of the inspirational function of hagiography in general and especially of the miracles described for the consolidation of faith, and the second provides a cultural and historical context for the Old English Dialogues within the broader post-classical and medieval translation activity and with respect to other Anglo-Saxon translations from Latin during and immediately after Alfred's reign. A third chapter explores late antique and early medieval conceptions and practices with regard to translation, literalness and literary freedom. Because of the status of Latin as the language of the Church, and the difficulty the Anglo-Saxons experienced in learning it, translation from Latin into the vernacular was soon unavoidable in order to transmit religious texts. In the next chapter the history of the literary activity at Worcester is examined, because his connection with the diocese of Worcester is the only background information available for Bishop Waerferth. With regard to the language and translation technique I seek to establish connections between Waerferth's situation and his treatment of the text. To this end a detailed analysis was undertaken of the entire first book in comparison to the Latin original. In spite of what has generally been held to be the case, my findings are that Waerferth does not usually rely narrowly on his copy of the original; he also introduces a substantial number of minor changes, explanatory additions, re-arrangements in the order of phrases or clauses, and adjustments of a syntactical nature, etc. His aim was to provide access to Gregory's teachings at a time of educational decline, modestly and faithfully keeping as close to the original as Old English idiom allows and at the same time producing a text that could be read alongside a copy of the Latin original by beginning students, as Alfred may still have been at this stage. The second volume of this thesis contains two appendices. In the first appendix the Old English and Latin text of the first book, taken respectively from the only and from the most suitable edition of each of these texts, are presented side by side for convenient reference. Also the reading of the editor of the Old English version, Hans Hecht, of the textually inferior but better preserved manuscript is offered here. The second appendix contains a list of all the misprints and/or transcription errors in this edition of the Dialogues as compiled by Pieter Harting.

Lo, Meo Sergio <1970&gt. "Monte Carlo Simulations of Novel Scintillator Detectors and Dosimetry Calculations." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2009. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/1583/.

Full text
Abstract:
Monte Carlo (MC) simulation techniques are becoming very common in the Medical Physicists community. MC can be used for modeling Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and for dosimetry calculations. 188Re, is a promising candidate for radiotherapeutic production and understanding the mechanisms of the radioresponse of tumor cells "in vitro" is of crucial importance as a first step before "in vivo" studies. The dosimetry of 188Re, used to target different lines of cancer cells, has been evaluated by the MC code GEANT4. The simulations estimate the average energy deposition/per event in the biological samples. The development of prototypes for medical imaging, based on LaBr3:Ce scintillation crystals coupled with a position sensitive photomultiplier, have been studied using GEANT4 simulations. Having tested, in the simulation, surface treatments different from the one applied to the crystal used in our experimental measurements, we found out that the Energy Resolution (ER) and the Spatial Resolution (SR) could be improved, in principle, by machining in a different way the lateral surfaces of the crystal. We have then studied a system able to acquire both echographic and scintigraphic images to let the medical operator obtain the complete anatomic and functional information for tumor diagnosis. The scintigraphic part of the detector is simulated by GEANT4 and first attempts to reconstruct tomographic images have been made using as method of reconstruction a back-projection standard algorithm. The proposed camera is based on slant collimators and LaBr3:Ce crystals. Within the Field of View (FOV) of the camera, it possible to distinguish point sources located in air at a distance of about 2 cm from each other. In particular conditions of uptake, tumor depth and dimension, the preliminary results show that the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) values obtained are higher than the standard detection limit.

Abstract:
The University of Edinburgh is a renowned university in the world now. However, it was only a town college back in 1583, and the function of Edinburgh University varies from period to period. It was functioned as a religious, educational institutions in the first place and gradually involved in British politics as well. Moreover, the University of Edinburgh witnessed and promoted the Scottish Enlightenment. Eventually, Edinburgh University becomes an essential university for high-level education in the United Kingdom with advanced and diverse curriculums.

Full text
Abstract:
Evaporation coolers are commonly used to cool hot off-gases by injecting water droplets, which vaporize and thus cool the off-gas so that it can be filtered in the next process step. In this paper the flow and heat and mass transfer in a full scale industrial evaporation cooler are predicted with CFD methods. Three different configurations are compared and evaluated with respect to the flow homogeneity at the spray nozzle plane. In addition, the cold air flow without droplet evaporation in a lab scale model is investigated with CFD as well as PIV (particle image velocimetry) measurements and comparisons are given. In the CFD simulation model all phases involved (off-gas, water droplets, water vapor and dust) are considered. Water droplets and the dust phase are modelled by an Euler/Lagrangian dispersed phase model which allows for a phase change from water droplets to vapor. The mass fraction of water vapor is computed by a diffusion/convection equation. The equations of the Eulerian and Lagrangian phases are fully coupled (the influence of the dispersed phases on the continuous phases and the phase change from water droplets to vapor is realized by appropriate source terms in the Eulerian phase equations). Turbulent particle dispersion is modelled by a stochastic tracking technique.
