Abstract:
I) et profanes (ch.
A monograph which professes primarily to examine the question at the root of les Serees: are they an analytical report of the evenings that G. Bouchet would have attented in Poitiers, or rather a purely fictional work he would have devised after his readings? The first part, countenancing the first proposition, introduces G. Bouchet, a bookseller and printer (I), evokes the various stages of a typical poitevin evening (II), the Poitou of the time (III), the topics of the conversations : health and disease (IV), woman in her nature and her different functions (V), social conditions (from the prince to "social outcasts") and institutions (VI), ancient (VII) and modern people (VIII) and eventually a reflexion on "rationalism and the scientific mind" from the speakers (IX). The second part, tackling the second proposition, lists G. Bouchet's borrowings from ancient authors (both of religious (I) and secular (II books) to moder ones (writers of miscellanies and of readings (III), doctors and naturalists (IV), demonologists (V), cosmographers and historians (VI), jurists, moralists and politicians (VII), fiction writers (VIII), playwrights and poets (IX). The third part studies the making of the collection : the way G. Bouchet compiles and recorders his borrowings into notebooks whose titles foreshadow those of les Serees (I); the formal variety of the copied scraps (II), the general architecture of the book (III), the treatment of the spoken parts (IV) and of the narratives (V) to conclude with the specificity of G. Bouchet's creation and the uniqueness of les Serees, as a "motley tale"

In addition, the route was presented to the traveler, traveled by, objects seen by the traveler. Besides the most important themes were shown peregrinations. Abstract:
The reception of the Huguenot poet Guillaume de Saluste Du Bartas' Semaines (1578, 1584 et seq.) is an important episode in early modern literary history for understanding relations between Scottish, English and French literature, interactions between contemporary reading and writing practices, and developments in divine poetry. This thesis surveys translations (Part I), allusions and quotations in prose (Part II) and verse imitations (Part III) from the period when English translations of the Semaines were being printed in order to identify historical trends in how readers absorbed and adapted the poems. Early translations show that the Semaines quickly acquired political and diplomatic affiliations, particularly at the Jacobean Scottish Court, which persisted in subsequent decades (Chapter 1). William Scott's treatise The Model of Poesy (c. 1599) and translations indicate how attractive the Semaines' combination of humanist learning and sacred rhetoric was, but the poems' potential appeal was only realized once Josuah Sylvester's Devine Weeks (1605 et seq.) finally made the complete work available in English (Chapter 2). Different communities of readers developed in early modern England and Scotland once this edition became available (Chapter 3), and we can observe how individuals marked, copied out, quoted and appropriated passages from their copies of the poems in ways dependent on textual and authorial circumstances (Chapter 4). The Semaines, both in French and in Sylvester's translation, were used as a stylistic model in late-Elizabethan playtexts and Zachary Boyd's Zions Flowers (Chapter 5), and inspired Jacobean poems that help us to assess Du Bartas' influence on early modern poetry (Chapter 6). The great variety of responses to the Semaines demonstrates new ways that intertextuality was a constituent feature of vernacular religious literature that was being read and written in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Britain.

Nier, Erlend Walter. "Financial structure, managerial incentives and product market competition." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1999. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1584/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation provides a contribution to the understanding of the interactions between the firm's financial structure and its operating decisions. The main idea is that financial structure impacts the payoff to the firm's decision-maker and that this impact on the managerial payoff will in turn affect his optimal response when confronted with different possible operating decisions. A particular focus is on the case where the manager's optimisation problem arises in a strategic environment in which the firm competes with rival firms in a product market. The first main chapter reconsiders the strategic effect of debt, as first analysed by Brander and Lewis (1986), under the novel assumption that quantity choices are made by managers whose objective is to avoid bankruptcy. The basic result is that quantity choices, which are strategic substitutes under profit maximisation, may turn into strategic complements when the quantity choice is made by managers. This reversal in the nature of competition arises under reasonable assumptions on the firm's profit function. It allows debt to be used to sustain more collusive product market outcomes than in the benchmark case where firms maximise profits, thereby avoiding, and indeed reversing, the pro-competitive limited liability effect of debt, as described by Brander and Lewis (1986). Delegation of the quantity choice to a bankruptcy-averse manager is shown to occur in a dominant strategy equilibrium. The next chapter analyses the effect of asymmetric information between a firm and its outside investors on the firm's competitive position in a model where first-period competition is followed by a financing stage a la Myers and Majluf (1984). Interim profit generated by the competition stage takes the role of financial slack and determines the extent to which external equity finance is required for a new investment opportunity. The full set of equilibria of the financing game is characterised and financial slack is formally analysed as a comparative statics variable. Using this the firm's first period objective is derived from first principles. In contrast to models of predatory behaviour, one finds that in the presence of an adverse selection problem the need to finance externally may provide a strategic benefit rather than a strategic disadvantage. The reason is that the adverse selection problem may induce speculative behaviour, which will make the firm more aggressive vis a vis its rival. The last main chapter analyses a model where the firm's manager is asked to make an informed investment decision after evaluating the prospects of an investment project. In this model, which exhibits both moral hazard and hidden information on the part of the manager, different remuneration schemes are discussed and the optimal contract between financial investor and manager is derived. Assuming the manager is risk-neutral and protected by limited liability, a benefit from diversification is shown to exist, in that the right incentives can be provided more cheaply when the manager is supervising more than one project. This occurs even though the projects are technologically unrelated and choices made on one project do not constrain the choices on any other project.

Plumb, Jeremy. "Population dynamics and endophytic flora of Chondrus crispus (Rhodophyta) : a temporal study." Thesis, Bath Spa University, 1999. http://researchspace.bathspa.ac.uk/1584/.

Full text
Abstract:
A temporal long-term study of the population structure and dynamics of the red alga Chondrus crispus at Lilstock, Somerset (Bristol Channel), the British Isles, and an investigation of its associated green and brown endophytic algal flora were undertaken from January 1994 to September 1996. The population of C. crispus was composed of plants which consisted of a basal holdfast from which arose numerous fronds in varying stages of development, with or without reproductive fronds (cystocarps or tetrasporangial sori). Plants were found with only gametophyte (haploid) or tetrasporophyte (diploid) fronds, whereas other plants described as mixed clumps consisted of gametophyte and tetrasporophyte fronds associated with the same basal disc. New plants entered the population and others were lost throughout the study. Individual plant longevity ranged from <46 days to >927 days. The monthly gametophyteitetrasporophyte ratio did not significantly deviate from 1:1, and within the population there was a stable long-lived core of plants, with a gametophyte:tetrasporophyte ratio of 1:1. Gametophyte plants with cystocarps had a significantly greater dry mass and contained a significantly greater number of fronds than tetrasporophyte plants with sori. Significantly higher numbers of tetrasporophytes had reproductive structures (sori) than gametophyte plants (cystocarps) during summer months (namely May, June and July). Both recruitment from spores and frond regeneration from remnant basal discs played an important role in maintaining the population structure. At least 6 green algal taxa including Acrochaete heteroclada, A. operculata, A. repens, A. viridis, Enteromorpha sp(p) and Pseudoendoclonium sp., and at least one brown algal taxon assigned to the genus Streblonema were found in association with gametophyte and tetrasporophyte C. crispus plants with cystocarps and sori, respectively. Spatial distribution of these algae within host tissues ranged from epiphytic through epiendophytic to endophytic. Of the C. crispus plants collected the frequency of plants infected with endophytic algae was reported to reach 95%. Infection by brown algae was rarely found without an associated green algal infection. It is hypothesised that a self-purging natural purification process of infected C. crispus fronds helps rid the plants and population of diseased fronds. It is suggested that it is primarily through the retention of the basal discs that C. crispus is an ecologically successful species.

Willacy, Sarah. "Homogeneous and stratified vented gas explosions." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2008. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1584/.

Full text
Abstract:
Explosion tests were carried out in four medium-scale test-vessels incorporating closed, vented, duct vented and interconnected vessels. A systematic investigation into the influence of homogeneous and stratified mixtures was undertaken by varying mixture reactivity, ignition position, injection position and mixture composition. A feature of this work has been the similarities in explosion phenomena between stratified and homogeneous explosions and between partially filled and fully filled geometries to the conclusion that the explosion severity recorded in stratified mixtures towards the lean flammability limit was in many cases much higher than the fuel concentration would normally suggest. Stratified mixtures with global equivalence ratio around stoichiometric produced significantly lower pressures than their homogeneous equivalents. However, stratified (globally) near-limit mixtures produced overpressures that were several hundred mbar higher than those of the equivalent homogeneous mixtures. Even beyond the flammable range (globally) the stratified mixtures produced significant overpressures. The phenomena discussed in this thesis illustrate the difficulty in designing adequate protection for such vented, duct vented and interconnected geometries, since even relatively small pocket of weak fuel-air mixtures produced relatively severe explosions. This can have implications for the safety design of inter-connected installations which are not intended to be subject to flammable mixtures. While it is an important conclusion from the work presented in this chapter that close to the flammability limits the stratified explosion severity was greater than its global concentration would normally indicate, it should be stressed that homogeneous stoichiometric tests still constitute the worst case tests. Therefore, it is not the suggestion of this work that the design of vented vessels should be modified to represent the maxima obtained in stratified work. However, the value of this research in the field of post-explosion investigation is clear.

Full text
Abstract:
This study concerns the representation of space in Caribbean literature, both francophone and Anglophone and, in particular, but not only, in the martinican literature, in the works of the authors born in the island. The analysis focus on the second half of the last century, a period in which the martinican production of novels and romances increased considerably, and where the representation and the rule of space had a relevant place. So, the thesis explores the literary modalities of this representation. The work is constituted of 5 chapters and the critical and methodological approaches are both of an analytical and comparative type. The first chapter “The caribbean space: geography, history and society” presents the geographic context, through an analysis of the historical and political major events occurred in the Caribbean archipelago, in particular of the French Antilles, from the first colonization until the départementalisation. The first paragraph “The colonized space: historical-political excursus” the explores the history of the European colonization that marked forever the theatre of the relationship between Europe, Africa and the New World. This social situation take a long and complex process of “Re-appropriation and renegotiation of the space”, (second paragraph) always the space of the Other, that interest both the Antillean society and the writers’ universe. So, a series of questions take place in the third paragraph “Landscape and identity”: what is the function of space in the process of identity construction? What are the literary forms and representations of space in the Caribbean context? Could the writing be a tool of cultural identity definition, both individual and collective? The second chapter “The literary representation of the Antillean space” is a methodological analysis of the notions of literary space and descriptive gender. The first paragraph “The literary space of and in the novel” is an excursus of the theory of such critics like Blanchot, Bachelard, Genette and Greimas, and in particular the recent innovation of the 20th century; the second one “Space of the Antilles, space of the writing” is an attempt to apply this theory to the Antillean literary space. Finally the last paragraph “Signs on the page: the symbolic places of the antillean novel landscape” presents an inventory of the most recurrent antillean places (mornes, ravines, traces, cachots, En-ville,…), symbols of the history and the past, described in literary works, but according to new modalities of representation. The third chapter, the core of the thesis, “Re-drawing the map of the French Antilles” focused the study of space representation on francophone literature, in particular on a selected works of four martinican writers, like Roland Brival, Édouard Glissant, Patrick Chamoiseau and Raphaël Confiant. Through this section, a spatial evolution comes out step by step, from the first to the second paragraph, whose titles are linked together “The novel space evolution: from the forest of the morne… to the jungle of the ville”. The virgin and uncontaminated space of the Antilles, prior to the colonisation, where the Indios lived in harmony with the nature, find a representation in both works of Brival (Le sang du roucou, Le dernier des Aloukous) and of Glissant (Le Quatrième siècle, Ormerod). The arrival of the European colonizer brings a violent and sudden metamorphosis of the originary space and landscape, together with the traditions and culture of the Caraïbes population. These radical changes are visible in the works of Chamoiseau (Chronique des sept misères, Texaco, L’esclave vieil homme et le molosse, Livret des villes du deuxième monde, Un dimanche au cachot) and Confiant (Le Nègre et l’Amiral, Eau de Café, Ravines du devant-jour, Nègre marron) that explore the urban space of the creole En-ville. The fourth chapter represents the “2nd step: the Anglophone novel space” in the exploration of literary representation of space, through an analytical study of the works of three Anglophone writers, the 19th century Lafcadio Hearn (A Midsummer Trip To the West Indies, Two Years in the French West Indies, Youma) and the contemporary authors Derek Walcott (Omeros, Map of the New World, What the Twilight says) and Edward Kamau Brathwaite (The Arrivants: A New World Trilogy). The Anglophone voice of the Caribbean archipelago brings a very interesting contribution to the critical idea of a spatial evolution in the literary representation of space, started with francophone production: “The spatial evolution goes on: from the Martiniques Sketches of Hearn… to the modern bards of Caribbean archipelago” is the new linked title of the two paragraphs. The fifth chapter “Extended look, space shared: the Caribbean archipelago” is a comparative analysis of the results achieved in the prior sections, through a dialogue between all the texts in the first paragraph “Francophone and Anglophone representation of space compared: differences and analogies”. The last paragraph instead is an attempt of re-negotiate the conventional notions of space and place, from a geographical and physical meaning, to the new concept of “commonplace”, not synonym of prejudice, but “common place” of sharing and dialogue. The question sets in the last paragraph “The “commonplaces” of the physical and mental map of the Caribbean archipelago: toward a non-place?” contains the critical idea of the entire thesis.

Marceau, Bertrand. "L’abbé de Cîteaux et la direction de l’ordre cistercien (1584-1651)." Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040079.

Full text
Abstract:
In the context of the clashes of the first modernity and of the Catholic Reformation after the Council of Trent (1545-1563), Cîteaux, which is both an Abbey and a chief of Order, is exempt from being hold in commendam, allowing the regular abbots to govern and reform the order while adapting its institutions to the reformative demands. Hence, at the heart of the leadership lies the complex problem of the relationship between the abbot of Cîteaux, the General Chapter, the four first fathers, the daughter-abbeys, and the various different external powers, both political and religious. The general abbot is confronted to controlling an order that is disturbed by the growing autonomy of the national Congregations and the formation of the Strict Observance. Indeed, the Cistercian Order maintains a number of abbeys throughout all parts of Europe that have remained catholic. The fear of an internal schism within the order leads to a redefinition of the institutional powers for the benefit of vicar-generals and congregation presidents. My study of the role of the abbot of Cîteaux is conducted from the dual point of view of power, that of the leadership and that of the reformation of the order. The problem that I raise is that of the evolution of the abbatial government and it cannot be restricted to a biographical prism. As a metaphor for the order's unity, the abbot gathers both a functional and a personal authority. In spite of the various rifts, the wish for maintaining unity persists in the 17th century around the notion of a common good shared by all the Cistercian monastic fragments : the family gathered around the Novum monasterium of Cîteaux and its father abbot

Abstract:

Pauné, i. Xuriguera Eduard. "Interface Dynamics in Two-dimensional Viscous Flows." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/1584.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is viscous fingering in Hele-Shaw cells, or Hele-Shaw flows. We look for insights into the fundamental mechanisms
underlying the physics of interface dynamics, which we hope will exhibit some degree of universality. The aim is twofold: on the one hand we focus on the role of surface tension and viscosity contrast in the dynamics of fingering patterns. On the other hand we introduce a modification of the original problem and study the effects of a inhomogeneous gap between the
plates of a Hele-Shaw cell.

A dynamical systems approach to competition of Saffman-Taylor (ST) fingers in a Hele-Shaw channel is developed. This is based on global analysis of the phase space flow of the ODE sets associated to the exact solutions of the problem without surface tension. A general proof of the existence of finite-time singularities for broad classes of solutions is given. The existence of a continuum of multifinger fixed points and its dynamical implications are discussed. We conclude that exact zero-surface tension solutions taken in a global sense as families of trajectories in phase space are unphysical because the multifinger fixed points are nonhyperbolic. Hyperbolicity (saddle-point structure) of multifinger fixed points is argued to be essential to the physically correct qualitative
description of finger competition. The restoring of hyperbolicity by surface tension is proposed as the key point to formulate a generic Dynamical Solvability Scenario for interfacial pattern selection.

We study the singular effects of vanishingly small surface tension on the dynamics of finger competition in the Saffman-Taylor problem, using the asymptotic techniques developed by Tanveer and Siegel, and numerical computation, following the numerical scheme of Hou, Lowengrub, and
Shelley. We demonstrate the dramatic effects of small surface tension on the late time evolution of two-finger configurations with respect to exact
(non-singular) zero-surface tension solutions. The effect is present even when the zero surface tension solution has asymptotic behavior consistent with selection theory. Such singular effects therefore cannot be traced back to steady state selection theory, and imply a drastic global change in the structure of phase-space flow.

Finger competition with arbitrary viscosity contrast (or Atwood ratio) is
studied by means of numerical computation. Two different types of dynamics
are observed, depending on the value of the viscosity contrast an the
initial condition. One of them exhibits finger competition and ends up in
the ST finger. In opposition, the second dynamics does not exhibit finger
competition and the long time dynamics seems attracted to bubble shaped
solutions. An initial condition appropriate to study the ST finger basin
of attraction is identified, and used to characterize its dependence on
the viscosity contrast, obtaining that its size decreases for decreasing
viscosity contrast, being very small for zero viscosity contrast. The ST
finger is not the universal attractor for arbitrary viscosity contrast. An
alternative class of attractors is identified as the set of Taylor-Saffman
bubble solutions, and one important implication of this result is that the
interface is strongly attracted to finite time pinchoff.

A nonlocal interface equation is derived for two-phase fluid flow, with
arbitrary wettability and viscosity contrast c, in a model porous medium defined as a Hele-Shaw cell with random gap b. Fluctuations of both capillary and viscous pressure are explicitly related to the microscopic quenched disorder, yielding conserved, non-conserved and power-law correlated noise terms. Two length scales are identified that control the possible scaling regimes and which depend on capillary number Ca as l sub 1 = b sub zero (c Ca)(superindex -1/2) and l sub 2 = b sub zero/Ca. Exponents for forced fluid invasion are obtained from numerical simulation and compared with recent experiments, obtaining good partial agreement.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to investigate the feeling of belonging that students may or may not have and the relationship of student sense of belonging to the overall academic achievement of a school. Students were surveyed on their sense of belonging in selected middle schools. The students scored themselves on the Psychological Sense of School Membership scale, which revealed an overall mean score of belonging. Students from high-performing schools were compared to students from low-performing schools in regard to their sense of belonging. Additionally, teachers were asked to rate their perception of the students’ sense of belonging. The teachers’ scores were compared to the students’ scores in both high- and low-performing schools. Lastly, teachers were asked to provide qualitative information about the schools’ role in creating a sense of belonging. An extensive review of the literature regarding sense of belonging reveals support of the importance of sense of belonging in student achievement. There is also extensive evidence regarding variation of sense of belonging among minority groups and the important role of teachers in creating a sense of belonging for students. This study found that there is no significant difference in students’ reported sense of belonging between high-performing schools and low-performing schools on the Psychological Sense of School Membership scale. There is a significant difference between the teachers’ perception of the students’ sense of belonging and the students’ reported sense of belonging on the Psychological Sense of School Membership scales. Teachers reported important roles in creating an environment of belonging. The qualitative data provided by teachers support evidence from the literature review indicative of schools with sense of belonging. High-performing schools do not report much information regarding discipline and routine as being important parts of creating belonging. However, low performing schools often report these as important to creating a sense of belonging for students. Implications of the research include: Teachers may not have an accurate understanding of students’ sense of belonging and how to create a sense of belonging in schools. Further study should try to gain better understanding of the relationship between sense of belonging and minority status.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the design of mobile architecture that challenges traditional ideas of site through the design of a museum to commemorate immigration to the United States. This thesis develops a floating, moveable, inhabitable structure that moves on the inter-coastal waterways of South Florida, within the public areas of Miami. The floating museum offers new perceptions of the city and new means of occupying its various settings. Its architectural elements do not change but are read differently in each location. The museum brings its exhibitions to the city as an event. One moment it is there and the next it is gone. In its design, the Museum of Immigration explores the experience of leaving one place to settle in another. As a prototype, it might be the first in a series of such buildings around the country that offers a new relationship between building and site.

She, Jennifer Heep Kwan. "Perception of music for adult cochlear implant users: a questionnaire." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Department of Communication Disorders, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1584.

Full text
Abstract:
Existing music questionnaires have shown that postlingually deafened adult cochlear implant (CI) users generally find music to be less enjoyable following implantation. However, they did not investigate, in detail, which factors influence CI users’ music listening enjoyment, nor did they examine the approach a music training program should take. In order to obtain such information, a questionnaire, the University of Canterbury Music Listening Questionnaire (UCMLQ), was developed. The UCMLQ investigated: (i) the effect of implantation on CI users’ music listening enjoyment (determined by comparing the levels of enjoyment experienced post-implantation to prehearing loss, and just before implantation); (ii) the effect of a hearing aid in the unimplanted ear on CI users’ music perception and appreciation; (iii) the effect of timbre on music listening enjoyment whereby respondents will be asked to rate the pleasantness and naturalness of common instruments and voices, and also, give ratings on the instruments’ sound quality based on what they expect these instruments to sound to a person with normal hearing; (iv) whether respondents have a preference for a particular musical style (e.g. Country and Western, Jazz, Classical, etc); (v) whether respondents’ have a preference for, firstly, low-pitched versus high-pitched instruments/voices; secondly, music with instruments-only, voice-only, or both instruments and voice; and lastly, music with smaller number of performers versus greater number of performers; (vi) practical methods or ‘tips’ for enhancing everyday music listening enjoyment were collated; and finally, (vii) respondents were asked for their views and opinions on the content and logistics of a ‘take-home’ MTP for improving their music listening enjoyment. One-hundred postlingually deafened adult CI users, ranging in age from 18 to 88 years (mean = 62.1, SD = 17.1), completed the UCMLQ. All respondents used a Nucleus CI24 implant and the ACE speech processing strategy. Results showed that following implantation, respondents generally found music to be less enjoyable but they also preferred certain types of instruments and music: (i) low-frequency instruments over high-frequency instruments; (ii) certain instruments (e.g. the guitar) over others (e.g. brass instruments); (iii) smaller numbers of performers as opposed to larger numbers; (iv) Country and Western music as opposed to Pop/Rock, Jazz, Classical-small group, and Classical-orchestra; and (v) music with a slow rhythm/beat, and words. A comparison of the ratings given by CI and Hearing Aid (CI+HA) users and CI-only users also revealed that CI+HA users felt that they were significantly more able to follow the melody-line of musical styles, identify these styles, and they also rated musical styles to sound significantly ‘more normal’ than the CI-only users did. However, no statistically significant difference was found between the two groups’ (CI+HA users versus CI-only users) ratings for common instrumental sounds. In regards to respondents’ interest in partaking in a ‘take-home’ music training program (MTP), 54% of respondents stated that they would be interested in undertaking one. Respondents also indicated that the MTP should focus on improving their ability to recognise tunes, in particular, tunes known before implantation, and commonly-known tunes, and the MTP should offer a wide range of musical styles. In addition, training sessions should be of 30- minutes duration, 2 times per week, and the MTP should come in the form of a DVD with subtitles. Overall, this study collected information which not only helps us to better understand CI users’ appreciation of music but also could be used in the shaping and development of a future MTP.

Koot, Martha Beatrijs. "Effects of the Late Permian mass extinction on Chondrichthyan palaeobiodiversity and distribution patterns." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/1584.

Full text
Abstract:
The Late Permian mass extinction occurring at 252.6 ± 0.2 Ma is the most severe Phanerozoic extinction event and was preceded and followed by additional disturbances. Patterns and processes of extinction and recovery of marine vertebrates have been little studied compared to marine invertebrates. This project focuses on Chondrichthyes, which, together with other marine fish, appeared to have been relatively unaffected by the extinction, while most of their supporting ecosystem collapsed. This study explores the authenticity of extinction among chondrichthyans and possible explanations for the observed patterns, because extinction severities on the taxonomic and ecological levels may be decoupled or the quality of the fossil record may be variable. The presented analyses are based on a newly compiled database that supercedes older compilations. It is supplemented by material obtained from numerous localities globally, which includes newly described taxa. Hence, this study attempts to be the most up-to-date and comprehensive analysis of patterns and trends in chondrichthyan diversity and distribution that is currently available. The data demonstrate that, despite some variability in the Permian–Triassic chondrichthyan fossil record, the Lopingian record is shown to be of adequate completeness and, furthermore, range-through genus diversity is not significantly correlated with the number of taxonomic occurrences. Genus diversity declined from the mid-Guadalupian following an increasing extinction rate, which intensified throughout the Lopingian and thus supports a combined overall extinction as a result of the end-Guadalupian and Late Permian events. Furthermore, global distribution of chondrichthyan diversity shifted away from tropical regions and particularly the Boreal Sea gained in diversity, tracking extinction and recovery in marine benthic invertebrates in both time and space. No significant dependence of extinction on taxonomic structure or palaeoecological traits exists, which suggests proportional losses, except during the end-Smithian crisis. Also, a significant size decrease is absent among Permian/Triassic boundary-crossing taxa, suggesting selective loss of large-sized chondrichthyans rather than adaptive size decrease. Ultimately, the Hybodontiformes, Neoselachii, Xenacanthiformes and Holocephali are identified as the survivors, which possessed a varying combination of characteristics such as moderate body-size, adaptation to brackish/freshwater environments, benthic or generalist littoral (clutching) feeding behaviour, and a wide palaeogeographic range.

Ocampo-Thomason, Patricia. "The use of local knowledge for the defence and sustainable management of mangrove ecosystems : the case of Ecuador." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1584.

Full text
Abstract:
Shrimp aquaculture is one of the fastest growing economic activities in the tropical coastal zone. In Ecuador, the shrimp farming industry has grown exponentially since its introduction in 1969 and is now the main producing country of cultured shrimp in Latin America. But its rapid and uncontrolled expansion has led to a 57% reduction of mangrove forest in the country, and has had considerable impacts on the poor afro- Ecuadorian coastal communities decreasing the area available to them for obtaining their livelihoods. In turn this has generated a breakdown in the traditional resource allocation and management strategies, further adding to the social exclusion of already marginalised groups who are mainly Afro-Ecuadorians. This thesis explores the complexities of social, political and economic changes that have arisen in mangrove communities since the introduction of shrimp farming in the Mangrove Ecological Reserve (REMACAM). Located in the north of the Esmeraldas Province this is the last pristine mangrove ecosystem in Ecuador, harbouring some 6,000 traditional inhabitants. The research focuses on how the affected populations have responded to these changes, and how they have engaged with national neo-liberal reforms in order to be able to defend and manage the ecosystem. Research focuses on the dichotomous way in which mangroves are perceived in Ecuador today. Outsider perceptions see mangroves as mosquito ridden wastelands. This representation has made possible the development and expansion of the shrimp farming industry at the expense of the mangrove ecosystem. On the other hand, insider perspectives see mangroves as a multiple use ecosystem and a livelihoods provider. These understandings have been successfully used by the mangrove defence movement (CCONDEM) to create a strong movement against the shrimp farming industry. Using an insider perspective the mangrove defence movement has engaged with the country's neoliberal reforms, created national and international alliances and has also created a new political space of resistance. This space includes challenging, and changing national legislation, and proposing new legislation and management strategies to defend the mangroves and the traditional communities whose livelihoods depend on the ecosystem

The biological control is considered a natural and ecological alternative tool to overcome the problems caused by the use of chemical methods in pest control. In addition, the biocontrol presents several advantages when compared to its chemical analogues, regarding to environmental impact, cost, handling, specificity and resistance development. Among microorganisms used in biological control, fungi stand out and, the filamentous fungus and arthropod pathogen Beauveria bassiana. This fungus is one of the most studied and applied worldwide. In this study, using proteomics and bioinformatics approaches, a total of 256 proteins were identified. Proteins involved in different important processes for the biocontroling, including degradation of the cuticle (proteases, lipase), defense/antioxidants (catalases, oxidoreductases) and effectors (glycoside hydrolases) were observed. The identification of the molecular mechanisms involved in the fungal infection on specific pests provides understanding of biocontrol and consequently helping to develop strategies to optimize this process. The identification of proteins in a model that mimics the infection condition enables the oriented search for more efficient micro-organisms with greater virulence and specificity in the biological control of R. microplus tick.

Abstract:
The education system in Oman underwent tremendous development during the past four decades, however, the national economy dependency on oil threatens the sustainability of its education funding. This study aims to explore the relationship between education funding and oil price fluctuations in Qatar, U.A.E., and Oman from 1975 to 2015. Moreover, it aims to suggest new economic alternatives to diversify the education funding sources in Oman. This quantitative study, under the framework of Human Capital Theory, utilized descriptive and associational approaches to study the association between oil prices and education expenditures in the three countries. Multiple regression analyses showed that oil prices significantly predicted the government expenditure on education in Oman and Qatar with (β = -0.40, p = 0.013) and (β = 2.47, p = 0.02) respectively, while it was not significant in predicting the government expenditure on education (β = 0.36, p = 0.40) in the U.A.E. This study highlighted how Qatar and U.A.E were successful in moving away from oil dependency. The researcher recommended that the Omani government must encourage the inflow of direct foreign investment into its education field, like establishment of new education hubs, educational cities, and opening new branches for some of the leading educational institutions from around the world. The researcher plans to conduct future qualitative research to enrich knowledge in this area.

The Russian wheat aphid also acts as a vector of plant viruses. The cultivation of aphid resistant cultivars is the preferred control strategy and nine resistance genes, designated Dn1 to Dn9, have been identified. Another undesignated gene, Dnx, was found in the wheat accession PI220127. Mapping of the resistance genes relative to known markers will improve their use in breeding programs. Abstract:
Broadband behavior rating scales are commonly used in schools to gain data to help make critical decisions about a student’s educational programming and whether he or she is eligible to receive special education services. Several broadband behavior rating scales are beginning to include a scale that assesses executive functioning. This study investigated how scores from an executive functioning scale on a broadband behavior rating scale (Conners 3, Conners, 2008) compared to an established scale that only measures executive functioning (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function [BRIEF], Gioia, Isquith, Guy, & Kenworthy, 2000). Teachers completed both scales at the same point in time on students receiving academic interventions or special education services. Results indicated that the Conners 3 executive functioning scale primarily measures one scale on the BRIEF related to planning and organization skills. These results suggest that those using the Conners 3 executive functioning scale should be aware of the limited range of skills assessed and that they should be cautious in their interpretation of the scale when evaluating a student’s executive functioning skills.

Abstract:
Currently, we’re becoming a society more connected to the digital world, in its various forms, through the advanced devices that technology places on the market. This kind of society, exactly for living a big part of its life in the digital, will also assign a great importance to content. Contents change constantly, but they’re the basis of Web 2.0 and for that what defines it and its users, so that they define their culture and the way they’ll choose to relate with others. This exchange of content and information between several users from different cultures was potentiated by the appearance of Social Networks that put together in online communities a huge quantity of avid individuals for “customization”, “proximity” and “participation”. Web 2.0, with all its democratized means of divulgation and production and its Social Networks, gave rise to work and production as a group, that came to change the way projects are developed today. “User generated content”, “crowdsourcing” and “crowdfunding” are some of the activities that succeeded in this new perspective. The first one gives back to the individual the role of producer, creating a lot of new individualized contents, whereas the others prove that in a organized group a crowd can produce effectively, relieving brands and companies of economic costs, or even putting together resources so they can invest in other individuals. Involved in the practices described above, different types of users appear : “prosumers”, “proams” and “serial-careers” are some examples; bearing means with more than enough quality to produce products and content by professional parameters, this will modify the context in which we search and practice a profession.

The heterogeneity of the ways information is presented on the web is a characteristic which complicates the analysis between different sources. Even in hierarchical structures, which have a minimum relation of order, there is no standard for how to display the elements and how to reference them. Therefore, this work’s main focus is to present a visual and extensible tool that centralizes and supports operations on such structures in web pages. To that end, the PLATAL (Platform of Hierarchy Extraction and Alignment) tool was developed, to facilitate the various operations of hierarchy alignment. The tool has four main modules: one for extracting hierarchies of web pages, making them available for manipulation in standard formats of the semantic web; one for automated alignment of these hierarchies, based on various heuristics and ontology alignment techniques; one for manual alignment of hierarchies, allowing the creation of reference alignments; and finally, one for evaluation of alignments, through the analysis of precision and recall. To evaluate the heuristics of alignment, experiments were performed in the field of e-commerce. The results were compared with that produced by other tools described in the literature. Therefore, this work contributes as a way to enable the creation of aligned hierarchies from heterogeneous structures found on the web.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Tourism and Hospitality Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2009.
The potential for the sex tourism industry to become legalised in South Africa with the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup is an issue which has raised much controversy and is now at the top of the agenda for debate within government, the business sector and civil society. The study investigates perceptions of students at a Further Education & Training College towards the sex tourism industry, together with selected components of that industry. The study is undertaken to better understand student's perceptions of the sex tourism industry. In order to achieve this, the researcher set out to better understand the sex tourism industry as a whole; as well as to investigate selected socio-cultural impacts that the sex tourism industry can have upon society in order to explore the positive and negative impacts that sex tourism can have upon the youth. In terms of South African legislation, prostitution is illegal under the Sexual Offences Act 23 of 1957, and the study examines current calls for the sex tourism industry to be legalised or decriminalised in light ofthe forthcoming 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. The study further examines life orientation for learners and sex education for sex workers. Life orientation is examined as it may have an effect on students' perceptions towards the sex tourism industry. The training of tourism and hospitality staff is seen as a vehicle for combating one of the components ofthe sex tourism industry, namely, child sex tourism and, thus, it is necessary to examine a number ofits other components. The study briefly touches on life orientation, as a key element in ensuring that learners become competent members of society, and as a tool which assists in providing them with essential life skills. Sex education is seen as necessary for both learners and sex workers in order to enable them to comprehend their rights and choices in life. For the purposes ofthe empirical study, the researcher makes use of first year tourism students at an FET College to gain insight into a student's perspective of the sex tourism industry. The iv researcher makes use of students in order to obtain a varied perspective as the students hail from different walks oflife and have diverse views and opinions. Entry into prostitution comes as a result of one or more of a number of contributing factors such as poverty and human trafficking. The contributing factors are researched and are explained in the literature review. The need to conduct the study emanates from the fact that the sex industry forms a large part of the tourism industry and it is a growing industry in South Africa. The research focuses on two areas: the students' perceptions of the sex tourism industry and the social impacts that the sex tourism industry can have upon society. The research methodology includes a literature search followed by the data collection for the empirical survey. The data collection procedure is explained in detail in the relevant chapter. A combination of the qualitative and quantitative approaches are followed for the· empirical survey. Such an approach is also known as a ''triangulative approach". The empirical survey together with the ensuing statistical analysis are conducted in collaboration with the CPUT registered statistician. The responses to the questionnaire are statistically analysed by the statistician, after which the results are described and interpreted by the researcher. The study finds that the majority of students do not want the sex tourism industry to become legalised and perceive the sex industry as immoral. The social impacts of the sex tourism industry can be harmful to society and the study found that the majority ofstudents understood the impact the industry can have and the role that education plays in reducing a few ofthese selected impacts. Finally, a set ofrecommendations and a number ofconcluding remarks are made. A comprehensive bibliography is included.

Abstract:
Objectives The incidence of nosocomial infections in the General ICU of the Hospital São Vicente de Paulo was evaluated using adjusted rates for patients’ lenght of stay and time of device exposure. We also determined the differences in the rates of infections according basic reason for admission (trauma, neurological, and medical-surgical). Material and Methods From March 1 to December 31 1999, patients in the General ICU were prospectively followed for detection of nosocomial infection during their stay. Diagnosis of nosocomial infection was made according to the Centers for Disease Control e Prevention (CDC) definitions and the rates were calculated according to the methods of the National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance (NNIS) System. Results Six hundred eighty-six patients (4,201 patient-days) were followed. One hundred twenty-five nosocomial infections occurred and the overall rate was 18.2% or 29.8 infections per 1,000 patient-days. The most commonly found infection sites were: pneumonia (40%), urinary tract infection (24%), and primary bloodstream infections (12.8%). Device-associated nosocomial infection rates were as follows: 32.2 pneumonias per 1,000 ventilator-days, 9.7 urinary infections per 1,000 indwelling urinary catheter-days, and 7 bloodstream infection per 1,000 central venous catheter-days. Overall incidence of infection in trauma (26.8) and neurological (20.7%) groups was higher than in the medical-surgical group (12.2%), p<0.001. Conclusions Our study found a high incidence of pneumonia and high rates of nosocomial infections associated with use of an invasive device in this ICU. The basic cause for admission affected infection rates, suggesting the need for a stratified analysis of patients in the General ICU by basic reason for admission.

Abstract:
The connectedeness of the tongues of the double standard map family is shown by quasiconformal deformation. I determine the growth rate of the coefficient of the Laurent series of inverse of the Böttcher map for quadratic polynomials with escaping critical point. An inequality that yields a domain on which there is no critical value of the multiplier map is derived from the theory of quadratic differentials. I give an alternate proof of Levin criterium for non local connectedness of infinite satellite renormalizable quadratic Julia sets. A geometric model of this situation is also investigated

ABSTRACT: The current market environment, characterized by strong uncertainty and variability, requires fast and efficient replies from the companies that wish to remain competitive. To deliver the product that the client needs on the right date and in the right quantities is the minimum a company has to do with in order to satisfy the customers. The current project aims at suggesting possible solutions in order to eliminate out-of-stock situations, given the importance of this subject and the consequences it may create. In this work, the non deliveries of material to the clients are quantified, causes that originate out-of-stock situations are looked for, real situations are analyzed and, finally, possible solutions for the reduction and/or elimination of this problem are suggested, always using the company Polisport as a case study.

Abstract:
Nostoc punctiforme is a nitrogen-fixing, symbiotic/free-living cyanobacterium. There has been a great deal of research conducted on the genomic nature of N. punctiforme as it pertains to its ecologically important role in the nitrogen cycle in varied environments around the world. My study concentrated on the dormant cell type known as the akinete. Increasing concentrations of NaCl were used to follow the growth phases from germination to akinete formation (lag phase-logarithmic growth phase-stationary phase). I found that increased salt concentrations caused N. punctiforme to form akinetes faster when compared to the control. Germination rates were not greatly increased or shortened by salt concentrations at or below 40 mM NaCl. Damage to cells due to NaCl was observed between 105 mM and 500 mM. Physiological studies, such as this one, enable better quantifiable field research since the organism’s limitations under laboratory conditions are known. This research allows researcher to more accurately plan and pick study sites, develop field studies and gives a solid basis for comparison to the natural environment.

Abstract:
CHDS State/Local

To defend American agriculture against foreign or domestic terrorism, it is essential that states build multi-state partnerships to provide for the collaborative plans, programs and operations needed to protect the nations food security. The National Homeland Security Strategy puts states on the front lines in the war against terrorism---including the struggle to secure the agriculture industry from potentially devastating attack. The issues surrounding agro-terrorism are vast and complex and the resources of the Federal government to address these issues are limited and overextended. If states attempt to address this threat independently, important opportunities to reduce vulnerability and enhance capability will be lost. To achieve the capabilities needed for agro terrorism detection, mitigation, preparedness and response, states must collaborate to build the partnerships and programs their citizens require. This thesis argues multi-state partnerships are critical to defeating this threat as well as providing a robust response to an attack. Whether intentionally introduced or naturally occurring , infectious diseases can easily cross state borders before an outbreak is even detected. States must be prepared to act quickly to mitigate the effects of any crisis. There is a significant opportunity for states to strengthen their abilities to provide for a stronger agriculture counter terrorism preparedness system. The states can further their ability to combat attacks on agriculture actively by demonstrating leadership in implementing administrative agreements and ultimately adopting compact(s) between states as well as with the private sector.
