Abstract:
The aim of this article is to review the lexicography of Andrzej Calagius, to present a list of his dictionaries of synonyms and to correct the misinformation about his dictionaries. The article describes three German-Polish-Latin editions (1579, 1595, 1602), one German-Latin edition (1597), and two Latin editions (1592 and 1594). It also proves that these multilingual editions are not revised versions of the 1579 edition but independent dictionaries.

Abstract:
Ideę bliskiej z nią współpracy pozostałych państw słowiańskich głosił w tamtym czasie pochodzący z Dalmacji duchowny i dyplomata papieski, Aleksander Komulović. Autor postarał się zrekonstruować misję dyplomatyczną Komulovicia do Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej w latach 1594-1597 wraz z oceną szans jej powodzenia w ówczesnych warunkach religijnych i geopolitycznych. The Idea of Slavic Unity in the Diplomacy of Alexander Komulović, the Papal Nuncio to Central and Eastern Europe in 1594-1597 The outbreak of another Austro-Turkish war in 1593, urged Pope Clement VIII to establish the Holy League which mainly consisted of the Central and Eastern European states, and the aim of which was to oppose another Muslim aggression against Christians. The Roman Curia decided to include Muscovy in the plan as well. The idea of close cooperation with all Slavic states was put forward at that time by Aleksander Komulović – a priest and papal diplomat from Dalmatia. The author’s aim was to reconstruct the Komulović’s diplomatic mission to Central and Eastern Europe in 1594-1597, and provide an assessment of the chances of its success in the light of religious and geopolitical underpinnings of the period.

Abstract:
This study is about Mt. Palgong Meetings among war leaders of Korea, the general process of battles in the mountain, and literary works of meeting participants during the Imjin War(Japanese Invasion to Korea, 1592~1598; 壬辰倭亂). It has been known that Mt. Palgong Meetings were held two times - in March 1596(the 29th year of the King Seonjo 宣祖) and September 1596. But, this study reveals that the meetings were held two more times - in September 1592(the 25th year of the King Seonjo) and September 1594(the 27th year of the King Seonjo). Among the meetings, only what was held in March 1596 was led by the central government, while the other three meetings were voluntarily led by volunteer army leaders. At the battle in September 1597(the 30th year of the King Seonjo), those leaders who had participated in Mt. Palgong Meetings led the volunteer soldiers in defeating the Japanese troops. At Mt. Palgong Meetings, voluntary army leaders would express their visions about the world and the country with many patriotic literary works. The works of such leaders written at the meeting of September 1596 can be divided into two types: responsory and presenting poems(和唱詩) and linking verses poems(聯詩). While Mt. Palgong Meetings and Mt. Palgong battles were important historical accidents which would allow us to grasp the organizations and activities of volunteer armies, there remains no such historical space in the Mt. Palgong region.

Abstract:
By the late sixteenth century, Irish demand for seminary places was sufficient to warrant the establishment of a dedicated Irish college in Lisbon (1590). This was followed by foundations in Salamanca (1592), Douai (1594) and elsewhere. The great majority were administered by the Society of Jesus, whose Irish members were generally Old English, a term denoting descendants of the twelfth-century Anglo-Norman settlers. Old English Jesuit domination of Irish colleges occasioned accusations of discrimination against students of Gaelic family backgrounds, with the students seeking redress from the secular authorities. The Irish college in Douai was not formally administered by the Jesuits, but its founder, Christopher Cusack, collaborated closely with the Society. Accusations against him of anti-Gaelic bias emerged in the 1600s, coincidental with the arrival of large numbers of Gaelic Irish refugees in Flanders at the end of the Nine Years War (1594–1603). Ethnic tensions and financial difficulties all but put paid to the college in the 1620s.

Abstract:
Baworowskiego we Lwowie. Wyizolowane z książki grzyby zidentyfikowano do gatunku. W badanej kolekcji stwierdzono występowanie Aspergillus Niger van Tieghem. Celem eksperymentu było syntetyzowanie nowych związków pochodnych chinoliny i wyznaczenie ich odpowiednich stężeń do zwalczania zagrożeń mikrobiologicznych występujących w Biblii J. Wujka. Do badań zastosowano pochodne chinoliny. Przygotowano preparat do dezynfekcji zbiorów. Związki pochodne chinoliny to skuteczne, bezpieczne związki w dezynfekcji zbiorów bibliotecznych.

Abstract:
I) et profanes (ch.
A monograph which professes primarily to examine the question at the root of les Serees: are they an analytical report of the evenings that G. Bouchet would have attented in Poitiers, or rather a purely fictional work he would have devised after his readings? The first part, countenancing the first proposition, introduces G. Bouchet, a bookseller and printer (I), evokes the various stages of a typical poitevin evening (II), the Poitou of the time (III), the topics of the conversations : health and disease (IV), woman in her nature and her different functions (V), social conditions (from the prince to "social outcasts") and institutions (VI), ancient (VII) and modern people (VIII) and eventually a reflexion on "rationalism and the scientific mind" from the speakers (IX). The second part, tackling the second proposition, lists G. Bouchet's borrowings from ancient authors (both of religious (I) and secular (II books) to moder ones (writers of miscellanies and of readings (III), doctors and naturalists (IV), demonologists (V), cosmographers and historians (VI), jurists, moralists and politicians (VII), fiction writers (VIII), playwrights and poets (IX). The third part studies the making of the collection : the way G. Bouchet compiles and recorders his borrowings into notebooks whose titles foreshadow those of les Serees (I); the formal variety of the copied scraps (II), the general architecture of the book (III), the treatment of the spoken parts (IV) and of the narratives (V) to conclude with the specificity of G. Bouchet's creation and the uniqueness of les Serees, as a "motley tale"

Abstract:
After the failure of the urban French League, one generally thinks that the history of towns only was a subjection to the restaured autority of the Bourbonian Kings. Lyon's case, from the end of XVIth century to about the middle of XVIIth century, allows to try this interpretation. By understanding the political, not only as an administration, the building of modern State can be read more significantly. .

Lister, Kevin. "A measurement system for, and the measurement of, single particle energies in quantum dots." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1999. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1594/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the design, development, construction and performance of an instrumentation system suitable for the measurement of single electron quantum dot devices. The inaugural measurement with this new system produced fascinating experimental data from a novel magnetic spectrometer device. This data, presented in chapter 5, suggests that it is possible to measure the single particle spacing in a 500nm quantum dot device independent of the Coulomb blockade energy and within an electron mean free path. Devices were defined on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure, the interface of which formed a 2 dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The surface was patterned with metallic surface gates. On the application of a potential to the gates, the electrons were depleted from beneath the gate and the pattern was transferred to the 2DEG. The devices were fabricated in a Hall bar geometry using standard nanofabrication techniques. Measurements were performed using a 3He/4He Kelvinox 25 dilution refrigerator unit at a lattice temperature of TL45mK. Prior to the work detailed in this thesis the lowest effective electron temperature available to quantum transport researchers at Glasgow had been 1.2 Kelvin. This was achieved with the use of a pumped 4He variable temperature insert (VTI), for which 1.2K represented the lowest working temperature. Although a 3He/4He dilution unit had been available for some time, the unit had exhibited an effective electron temperature of Te>7K. As a direct result of the work contained within this thesis (detailed in chapter 4), the lower limit of the effective electron temperature range available was extended down to 250mK. This represents an improvement of more than an order of magnitude over the lowest effective electron temperature previously available and an improvement of >20 over that previously available within the dilution limit. In order to achieve this improvement a systems approach was adopted. The individual subsystems associated with the design of the new measurement system were designed to work in conjunction with one another. Great care was taken with respect to referencing potentials, shielding, intrinsic noise of the electronic components used and vibration isolation in order that the measurement system imposed the minimum induced electron heating on the device under test. Measurements were performed on quantum dot devices in the Coulomb blockade regime. Periodic peaks in the conductance of a quantum dot were observed. These conductance peaks were seen in response to an applied gate voltage, and are referred to as Coulomb oscillations. Such oscillations are a result of classical charging effects due to the addition or subtraction of a single electron to, or from, the quantum dot. These effects are a direct result of the quantisation of charge. Energy quantisation due to the confinement of the electrons wave-function, also plays a role in quantum dot devices. In the devices studied the classical charging energy, that gives rise to the Coulomb oscillations is generally an order of magnitude greater than the quantum mechanical effects that give rise to the single particle spectrum.

Bibi, Hamida. "Pollution effects on body mass distributions of freshwater benthic communities." Thesis, University of York, 2010. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1594/.

Full text
Abstract:
Theoretical studies of the resilience of ecological systems to environmental change predict that the size distributions of species in ecosystems should have discontinuities that reflect similar discontinuities in ecosystem processes. Body size distributions should have many peaks and troughs (modes) for natural, undisturbed ecosystems, but that as disturbances increases, so the number of modes declines. If so, this prediction has implications for assessing the quality of real ecological systems and has potential for environmental monitoring. This research was carried out to explore the relationship between water quality and body size patterns in benthic communities in order to establish the potential of size based indicators for assessing environmental condition, as well as testing Holling's (1992) proposition that lumpiness occurs in body size distributions across a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. The invertebrate samples were collected from both lentic and lotic habitats including rivers, ponds and canals in Yorkshire, UK, known to experience different degree of pollution. Five stations on the River Ure system and nine sites on the River Aire were sampled for moving water while eight stations were sampled for static (canals and ponds) habitats in the area South East of York. Community Abundance, BMWP score, water conductivity and ASPT analysis confirmed varying water quality among these sites. Visual observation of body mass pattern showed skewed distributions towards smaller size classes and most had two very obvious modes at medium and large size classes except for the most polluted habitats. Similarly, statistically rigorous estimates using Kernel Density Analysis (KDE) revealed highly significant relationships between the number of modes and water quality for running water. However, this study was unable to firmly relate discontinuities in body mass distributions to water quality in static water bodies and in fact the relationship appear to be the opposite of those found for moving water. Analysis of the number of gaps, using Holling's (1992) Body Mass Difference Index (BMDI), revealed wide variation in clean and intermediate water quality sites, though the most polluted site had the fewest gaps. However, other disturbed sites had more gaps and some clean sites had fewer gaps. It is clear that size distributions in benthic communities are lumpy, in the sense that most sites showed more than one mode or many gaps, but the number of gaps (discontinuities) is not always correlated with disturbance, at least for the water quality of freshwater systems.

Chrysochos, Neophytos Elia. "Information systems and organisational change : the case of flexible specialisation in Cyprus." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1999. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1594/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines the relationship between organisational change and information systems development in the case of an effort to implement flexible specialisation in Cyprus. In the centre of this research are the inter-organisational relationships developed in the flexible specialisation initiative and the role IT played in the formation of such relationships. Successively, the kind of organisational changes that take place as well as the driving force(s) of such changes are examined. In order to study and analyse such a complicated socio economic phenomenon an interpretive epistemology was adopted. Analysis of the empirical work draws mainly from theories concerning information systems while insights are drawn from disciplines that have studied organisational change and the concept of flexible specialisation in particular, such as industrial economics, geography and organisational theory. The research method followed is a multiple case study analysis. One case study was conducted in Emilia-Romagna and provides a point for reference for the cases of flexible specialisation in Cyprus, which is the main focus of the research. The case study in Cyprus was conducted over a period of three years, while the case study in Emilia-Romagna was done at one particular point in time. The key contribution of this research is the suggestion that the use of information and communication technologies depends on the complexity of the inter-organisational activities, rather than causing them, as the information systems literature tends to suggest. Furthermore, the case study demonstrates the significance of institutional and cultural factors for the non-emergence of inter-organisational complexity, and subsequent limited role attributed to IT in the flexible specialisation experiment.

MacDonald, Mary Jacqueline. "Silent shadows : supernumeraries in British court masques, 1594-1640." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7193/.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the contribution and significance in performance of supernumeraries in British court masques, 1594-1640. The six selected masques include a variety of performance venues and authors, with offerings by an assortment of monarchs (and others). There is also a range of performance dates between 1594 and 1640, including: a Scottish court masque and an Elizabethan court masque, two Jacobean masques, and two Caroline court masques, which were performed for or with a variety of monarchs or their consorts. The thesis is driven by practice-based research in relation to the venue, staging, costumes, props, lighting, and blocking with a view to determine the contribution and significance of these performers. Whilst mute roles are the focus of the analysis, this does not include either musicians or the main masquers. The investigation suggests the non-speaking supernumeraries were significant roles in performance and offered a contribution to the genre.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter explores the evolution of the Mughal and Portuguese geopolitical strategies that paved the way for the second (1591–1592) and third (1595–1775) Jesuit missions to the Mughal court. This chapter also analyses the reactions of the members of the second mission to Akbar’s religious policies and millenarian positions, as well as the diplomatic activities and proselytising strategies of the third Jesuit mission initiated in 1595. This chapter will be focused on the top-down strategy implemented by Jerónimo Xavier and the popular mission developed by Manoel Pinheiro in Lahore. Special attention is given to the roles played by the missionaries and their converts and patrons in the empire’s social, political and economic life, as well as the capacity of the Jesuit missionaries to reach different social groups.

Abstract:
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can play an important role in understanding the flow field below two converging rectangular jets. Each rectangular nozzle has a large length to width ratio, and the nozzles are parallel and very close to each other. This design is used in practical applications to produce polymeric fibers in the process known as melt blowing. In this paper we use turbulence models available in the CFD software Fluent 5.0 to study the detailed flow field. We also use experimental measurements to compare with the simulation results, and we test altemative die designs with the goal of identifying those that perform better.
